Great little game from the 30s. A precursor to the 80s Wicketz, very similar in style and mechanic. The Deluxe version has some lovely little lead figures. Made by the card company, De La Rue, before WW2. Simple but solid.

Classic game with the advantage that due to its smallness bored boys could play MCC v A Top of the Pops XI (top scorer Suzie Quatro 124*) undetected during double physics lessons....

Got this one, too. Before I got it, we used to play with a 6-sided pencil with the scores etched onto the side.

Happy memories of lunch times in school!

There are probably old collectible versions of this game from the 1920s or '30s (or whenever the game first appeared). That may be what's causing inflated eBay prices. I got my copy from Lords cricket ground's shop a couple of years ago - probably paid $10 for it. I believe they still sell it there.

Subutteo is best known for football (soccer to us Aussies), but the cricket game is a little gem. Lovingly put together and more beautiful to set up and look at than actually play. Bought one on eBay recently for way too much money, but it was in good nick and had all the bits and pieces, including the wonderful fellows in deck chairs.

This was so nearly excellent. Although it was possible, with some practice to get the bowler to bowl a delivery with something like a realistic trajectory it was far more effective to just let rip with a fast bullet. Batting also tended to be a bit boundary orientated - if you hit the ball, usually via a rapid spin/twizzle action it went for four. There were very few 1's or 2's and not many catches. I did wonder if the game would have been improved with a slightly larger and lighter ball that would not have flown so fast. I still played this a lot with my cousin when I was a lad, even managing to hit the ball directly into his mouth one time (I claimed a six).

I also built an automated motorised bowling machine using meccano which was activated by switch in the left hand and allowed you to play solo - it actually provided a better bowling action for play than with another player bowling. The device did have a fairly significant footprint however which rendered drives through mid-on a bit of a non-starter - I just rationalised this by removing a fielder and assumed there was a particulalry effective mid-on.

A superb game. Very good game play if you don't mind a little RSI along the way. Too many dice roll and the game is extraordinarily long, but so wonderful and accurate it's hard to fault.

I must admit I don't find this game fun at all. It may be a great simulation of cricket - all the games I've seen suggest it is - BUT I really feel it's lacking in terms of player skill. The game basically plays itself - that's fine if all the player is looking for is to watch a good cricket game, but I usually need to feel that my skills are contributing to the game in a meaningful way.

I'm in the middle of a new IC project, playing the English team between the Ashes of 05 and 06/07 when they went from being perhaps the new number 1 Test team in the world, to get smashed by Australia 5-0.

I've got to disagree about it just playing itself. Yes, there are long periods of just rolling dice, but how you play each player and how you set the field is really important, esp if you are playing on a poor pitch and need to farm the strike to protect weaker batsman. In my most recent session I had two different batsmen playing either defensively or hitting out, the pitch was a nightmare, I had to take the new ball as the bowling team and really go for it for 10 overs with my best bowlers and very aggressive fields. I think the fact that it takes about 10 hours to play a test match makes it appear boring, but if you spread it over many sessions it has peaks and troughs of drama, just like the real thing.

Here's my replay.

This is a very cool if somewhat mathematical look at cricket. Really great attention to detail, lots of shots to play and they relate to the ball that's been bold. The SAD thing is it's two player only. Anyone up to develop some solitaire rules?

A game I've had since the early 80s. More card game than cricket game, but still feels right. The cover image of this edition is the nicest. You can even find a geeky computer game version somewhere on the web (free and unofficial). A classic.

Played the hell out of this when I was kid. They advertised it here in NZ on telly with Sir Richard Hadlee. Loved it at the time. Was good for limited overs games, playing a test match could strain your patience. Unfortunately I have no idea what happened to my copy!

Just been back to Australia and picked up this nice little game that was fab to play in the 80s. Max 'Tangles' Walker lent his name to this one, developed by an accountant and although there's not much strategy to talk of it's a bit of fun.

I wouldn't imagine too many people would own this one as it stemmed from New Zealand, and I'm not even sure if it was sold anywhere else. While I feel its a great introduction to the game for people wanting to learn a bit more about cricket other than what the bowlers and batsmen do, it's a little too easy to take wickets sometimes (especially run-outs, which have a 2-in-6 chance of happening if a player is positioned in the same region of the field that a shot goes to).

There are actually two Test Match cricket games-at least in Oz. The first is the one John has listed. The other is an older version with two semicircle wheels that have levers.

You would move a lever for the bowler and up would come an action (yorker, fast ball, etc) then do the same for the batter (lbw, 6, 2 runs, etc). This is still being made but as a one day version. Not in BGG

The test match with the two dials was THE cricket game of my childhood. From an early age I would play this game out, swishing the dials over and over. It is a wonderful self contained game, with its own mini scoreboard. You could put all your score sheets under the board (lots of room) and take it everywhere with you. Brilliant. Of course the skill level was pretty low and it was repetitive, so I kind of lost interest once I hit ... oh ... 10 or 11. Oh well.

I owned this in the 70s and played it a lot. From memory it had an eight ball over?

This is also the name of the Crown & Andrews live action game, which I'm surprised is not on the list. It has the bowler with the chute and the batsman that hit the ball bearing ball to the boundary. I owned this and the scoreboard and "all white" fielding team (you could paint them yourself) - it's in bits now.

Great game though! After Flintoff's efforts in the second test I may get it out and see if I can replay the match with a different result (ie. Lee hits the winning two runs).

has had many reincarnations; 1980's made as test match in england by peter pan playthings and crown and andrews in aus. mike atherton cricket world cup cricket in england and super cricket in aus. The game has been done to death. time for something new boys! still cool fun though in what ever guise. but you need to make your own larger ground so that the shots go further. yes it is possible to hit 6's if you flick the ball fast and disregard the bowling chute!

Haven't played this but you can download bits and pieces from the site ( http://www.quicksingle.com/). Very odd graphics.

This is a great game and unlike a lot of the less expensive cricket games it has a reasonable amount of tactical play involved.

I've just been comparing all my cricket-based games (I have six or seven of the more commonly available games) and it suddenly occurred to me that QUICKSingle is the only game that really integrates the theme of cricket into the play of the game in a way that makes the player make the sort of decisions that would be made in an actual cricket match. It's also one of only a couple of cricket games where skill plays a major role.

Here is the one with the two dials! I found a copy of it at the Lifeline Bookfest, and had to have it.

first made by waddingtons in england in the 50's made by john sands in australia with 8 ball overs as was being played here at the time. later made by kroner (back to 6 balls); and now an "acb" version has been released. nothing is ever new!

I got mine in the late 1970s and it still had 8 ball overs! This was good to play and score yourself.

This is as close as I'll get to a good pic of my Test Match live-action game. This one looks good, except the bowler seems to actually "bowl" the ball, rather than roll it along the ground. Does anyone know if it works?

I found this last year for $5! Had to order a new batsman, as the bat was broken off after too many cover drives.

The ball actually bounces, as opposed to Test Match which had a ballbearing roll down the pitch. The ball has a magnet in it, which means the fielders "run to" the ball (i.e. the ball deviates towards the fielders). Although I've found the ball swings wildly when bowled if you have a slip fielder in place - as the ball heads towards the fielder instead of the batsman!

Both batting and bowling is more difficult in Super Cricket, making it frustrating for kids. My 7 year old hates it! But the fielders are sturdy and don't fall when attempting a catch and it is harder just to belt 4s - definitely doesn't favour the batting team as the original Test Match does.

Recommended! I just need to wait until my son grows up.

A game from the 1930s. Has a lot of lovely images and a fairly simple mechanic.

Go for the runs! is a game from (I'm guessing) the mid 80s. The back of the boxes says someone worked on this for 30 years (or perhaps, it took 30 years to get a publishing deal!). Anyway I like it, and I like the fact that cricket is soooo complex it takes years for ANYONE to produce a board game related to it. Personally I'm in my 10th BIG year!

Never heard of this one and only one image on the geek and little info. Looks like a Kiwi game from 1970.

Finally found a copy of this game on eBay a few weeks ago. It's not great, but it has a lot of potential with lots of players rated and a really nice mechanic to play three different types of game from a fast county game thru to a full test match.

I think if someone spent some time tweaking the rules, this could be a real winner, but it's long out of print.

Some images of it and I've written about it here:

Another nice little game from Lambourne and the prolific Terry Goodchild. This one is excellent if you want to play a world series of Test Match cricket, and is better for the fact an entire test can be played in an evening.

Cards, dice, spinners. This game seems to have it all. Would love to know if it's any good.

I have a game called "Howzat Cricket Trivia". Big box and not bad gameplay but you need to know your cricket very well! Not listed on BGG.

I also have Armchair Cricket - the mechanics are excellent and could be applied to other games I reckon. It just takes a long time to play a game.

you left out "Run Chase", from England. A replay game but not from Lambourne. Fellow named Eamon Bloomfield, aka Games Unlimited.....he used to work in a game shop in the early '80s. Game is from same time.
