That's right! It is time for the first annual Falsie Awards.

These Awards are determined by a panel of judges, well ok, one judge...ME! The results are liable and likely to change depending on my mood, or when I play a better game that fits the catagory from 2004.

I will retroactively change history to pretend that this isn't the first one, by listing awards for each of the previous years. Everyone will be fooled, including myself.

In an effort to list all of the games that I really liked this year, I'm going to make up some retarded catagories and give out awards for them.

Ta-da! Below are my useless opinions:

Lets start with the big one, then if you want to keep reading you'll know that it is only disappointing from here on out.

THE FAVORITIST!

I'm not saying that this is the best game of the year, no.

Rather this is my most favorite game of the year. (You know, there is a difference).

I will be playing this game 20 years from now. For a fairly quick Empire Building game this one has it all. For Diety's sake it has Pressgangs. What's not to love!

First, I have to say that with an even number of players I think that the game is good, but with an odd number this game shoots into amazing.

Ok, if you don't like dice (and yes you whinners, they are cruel to me as well), you are in for a potentialy frustrating time. Regardless, the game gives you options to beat the odds on the dice. Pick Navigation so you don't sink when sailing to the new world (This is a must for me as I will roll a one on this), etc.

So much color, so much flavor, tons of interaction, flip/flopping alliances. This is a great experience of a game.

(My copy didn't come with the finger).

MOST ENJOYABLE GAME MADE ONLY OF CARDS!

I was really looking forward to Camelot Legends. I saw that the art was beautiful and that they had all of the fun quests and obscure knights. As a fan of the stories and clunky old Arthur games I couldn't wait.

Then something happened. I played this game first. It is simple, it is elegant, it is nice and quick while capturing the theme nicely. This has sat well like a nicely portioned meal.

Still though, I couldn't wait to play Camelot Legends. While the other game was pretty and had all the stuff I wanted, I found that it really was superficial in that it just was a number crunching marathon.

Im Auftrag des Konigs rocks my Arthur!

FAVORITE FILLER!

Light, fun, screw you card game. Blind investment game that rips off some old mechanisms, but does it well. I find this game to be quite a bit of fun. Who doesn't love laying down the Fish Car. Smell That!

FAVORITE STRICTLY TWO PLAYER GAME!

I like a little confrontation in my Euro. This sadly came out 4th in the remarkably weak Decartes Games for 2 series. I could see why anyone that played any of the first games would not be overwhelmed to try this. A shame.

There are some great mechanics that allow for a fun fog of war. Tough choices of turn order, where sometimes plans go awry. The shrinking map keeps the players at each other's throats the whole time. A lovely elegant game that facilitates what would normally be quite fiddly.

FAVORITE TRADING GAME!

I'm totaly cheating, 'cause I'm not even sure if there are any other trading games that came out this year. Still, this is a great gem of a game that should have had a much larger print run.

Some people compare this game to the scat-tastic Bohnanza. I get the comparison, but there is an actual game here rather than an exercise in hand management.

This one has a ton of neat choices of what to do on your turn, and the ability to manipulate your options by the time your next turn comes around. If the SDJ was interested in companies that wouldn't have to produce 100,000 copies this very likely would have won.

FAVORITE TACTICAL GAME!

Heh, heh. Don't look for deep strategy here, this one is a total fly by the seat of your pants game. With two or three players (Avoid 4 absolutely!) and a timer this game plays fast, fun, and furious. Without a timer this game is a nightmare of downtime. So, what I'm saying is that, yes, this is flawed, the conditions have to be right. But, when they when the moons are aligned, this game is brilliant. Through all of last year, this has hit the table the most, and still goes strong.

FAVORTIE AUCTION GAME!

Deity! There are a ton of options in this game. And while the upgrades are fun and all, the crux of this game comes down to the brillaince of the auction system. UGH!

Dorn took his disc system from ToG and made a sense of geography to what would otherwise be a decent auction game. So many great decisions to make within the movement and auctioning system itself. Placement is key, something for yourself, or do you want the money. What are other people looking for. Force others into crappy auctions. Brilliant!

FAVORITE TRAIN GAME!

Yeah, yeah, yeah. You can make all the arguements you want that this isn't a train game, well screw you this is my list.

What a fab game! 'Ol FF has done it again. Really one of the greatest games made. I suspect that this will be on tables for years. 5 years from now there will be Power Grid dissenters saying that this game is for antiquated old farts with green hair. I say that they will probably be right, as I reach for the Manic Panic.

This game is filled with wonderful interacting mechanics that people will blast for being too heavy on accounting or the worst word of all "Fiddly".

I have a blast playing this and so will your moms.

FAVORITE GAME TO PLAY WITH MY GIRLFRIEND!

Keep in mind that I'm speaking of my girlfriend. So if you are going to play a game with her, this would be a good one. She loves it. She gets to shoot stuff, and make plane sounds. Most importantly, she gets to zoom around.

FAVORITE GAME TO WHINE THROUGH!

Ok, I admit it. I'm a whining little trollop. In fact, that's about the only way I win games. The power of whining keeps me afloat. Of all the games that came out in 2004 this is the one that facilitates my secret power.

WAAAAH, why did you sink my boats. Clearly you should be going after them. heh, heh.

Through the power of whining, I have become the comeback king on this one.

PRETTIEST GAME!

SDJ whatever. I do actually really enjoy this game. I'm very glad I own it, and I suspect it will get some serious drunken play.

What is important here is that there is a decent game here which facilitates that fantabulous pieces.

There is no sense being snobby about this one. It is just silly filler fun.

BEST USE OF PIRATES/BEST GATEWAY GAME

I look to games to be driven by theme, create a mood and emotion and have a high sense of interactivity. There are certainly some exceptions to this rule, but this one succeeds with what I generally enjoy. That said the mechanics will be new to players discovering why I'm into boardgaming, but obvious enough to figure out how to play. Most of all this game allows for people to be clever and try new things. Great intro game, and still plays well and different enough for old time gamers that I play with.

Ok, I've put it off far enough. Here it is. My vote for:

BEST GAME OF THE YEAR!

I love this game. So deep (no pun intended, no really). This game really blows my mind. Brilliant with two, even better with more. This is really the greatest stock market game created. Best of all this game is all about the power moves. Save up pieces to consume your other coral, then turn around and build with everything you've just eaten.

Then there is the crazy valuing system. I couldn't even wrap my head around it until the third playing, now it is essential.

There is conflict, interaction, manipulation, cooperation, evaluation, and beguiling. I adore this game and think that it will be long coming when a Euro can top this.

Wow, for all the great improvements that the geek has had over the years, there is still no safeguard for accidentally hitting the delete function that is right next to the comment function!

So anticlimactically this goes at the end now instead of where it was slotted before. Grrr.

BIGGEST SURPRISE OF THE YEAR!

Michael Schacht doesn't thrill me. In fact, I can say that before Hansa there hadn't been one game that he'd created that I'd ever want to play again. Then Hansa came out, and after hemming and hawing I played it. Gee-Golly, was I impressed. I even bought it.

(My appologies to Joe Gola, he made a clever little quip on me "Loving" Hansa, but now it is gone the way of the Dodo. Sob. The gist was that he was surprised and liked it as well, then he crapped in my hut.)
