Ok, I'm knocking on the hornet's nest with a stick. In the end, an entry belongs in the database if the administrators say it does. This isn't a democracy.

But there are some oddball entries on the Geek. I'm sure people have good arguments for why they should or shouldn't be here. Let's hear 'em (but try to keep it civil, thanks).

Also feel free to add your own entries. Try not to add 'Miscellaneous Game Accessory' or 'Unpublished Prototype', as those have established purposes. Oh, and for goodness sake don't add 'Busen Memo' or I will just have to delete it and then slap you around.

The game that inspired this list. Nomic is a game. Although it is more of an intellectual experiment really. Also, it is certainly not a 'board' game, or even a 'card' game. I mean, "Debate Tournament" isn't on the Geek, why is this?

Enough said. It is a game as you have called it such.

I added this to collection because I own the book Metamagical Themas by Douglas Hofstadter.

And yet, the site is called "BoardGameGeek", for apparently no reason ...

Give yer head a shake, there's a reason we don't include the plethora of computer games out there, or tag, or hide-and-go-seek, or curling, or field lacrosse.

And exactly how does owning a book justify adding an entry to this site?

"Agent of Chaos", indeed ...

Been a while since I looked at this. Nomic does have a board if you write it into the rules. One that I have played had a board and tiles.

Yep,
You can certainly get this as a 'game' - typically sold in shops that offer 'gift ideas' rather than games. I've seen versions in wood and also ones with colourful ceramic figures.

This does come in boardgames form. My mother-in-law bought it for our kids when they were little. It comes with a red board with yellow lines and the plastic X's and O's are also yellow.

I recall vividly asking myself the same question "Is this actually a board game?"

First of all, this is more of a game system than a game. But that could be said of a lot of games here. Secondly, if we're going to have traditional card games in the database, that opens quite a can of worms. Thirdly, I just wanted to add this picture to my geeklist.

Oh, and what's with people putting this on their 'owned' list? C'mon people. Why don't you put 'Nomic' on your owned list too?

Nomic is on my owned list.

To address your basic point, this has been discussed several times before and I'm still in the camp that says we should include things that are games that people play.

I don't have games like Nomic in my "collection" here to inflate it. I have them here so I can have a list of games that I own or have the parts for that I might want to play.

It is important to remember that different people use this site for different reasons.

I understand why Poker is on here, but I don't list my poker nights as "games played", and I don't list my chip set as an owned copy of "Poker".

I just make the distinction in my head between games played with the standard 52 card deck, and others.

The first card games were accepted, but at some point they stopped. Why?

- everyone just copied from pagat.
- a lot of traditional card games are quite regional.

So now there's a separate entry for all Traditional Card Games

Electric Football, first played by the ancient Belgians.
In fact, "Electric" is auld Walloon for "Board" and "Football" was also a Walloon word for "Futball", a game.
Hence, it is the quintessential board-game.
Do try to put a little research into these lists, old boy.

If you use an xacto knife to carefully remove only those pages with a prime number printed on them, then take the even sides of those pages and crochet them together in a 27x83x111 triangle, it forms the Universal Boardgame, a game so prefect that if you ever saw it you would eschew all other games for eternity, including mind games and foreplay.
BTW, if you flip the board over the rules are printed on the reverse, in the form of an ASCII Dancing Snoopy poster.

While I agree it's not a game I do think this belongs. I think a book catagory is a greak idea and in all honesty probably should have other books about board games listed in the database. The site is Board Game Geek. A true geek (let's not start copy/pasting webster [or other dictionary] definitions of Geek/Nerd again and just run with the commonly accepted ideology) of a subject wants to know all there is about his hobby. Books are a great way to learn about 'em.

This is the one I've always wondered about. Parker Brothers, who owned Nerf at that time, made this. And, if archival marketing materials are to be believed, they also produced:

Nerf Unidentified Floppy Object;
Nerf Ping Pong;
Nerf Table Hockey;
Nerfoop;

in addition to the more "traditional" Nerf Football; Nerf Soccer Ball; Nerf Super Ball; and Nerf Ball.

None of these others are in the database ... where does one draw the line between a game and an indoor imitation of a sport?

The one item on this list that I agree should not be listed as a "game" on BGG is the book.

I add Werewolf only as devil's advocate based on comments from above items:

The game needs no boards or cards. It is played online here at the Geek much like Nomic is played online (dialog and voating). It is somewhat a game system. I do recall playing the same game on the playground in grade school and it was called "Assassin".

Ahh, but it does require cards. You have to have the cards(or some sort of equivalent) so that the werewolves are chosen randomly. Just because it can be played on the Geek electronically doesn't mean that it's not a card game.

It has winners and losers; it has a clearly-defined end; it can be played sitting down at a table. I would say it qualifies. Even if it is getting dangerously close to an RPG.

Requires cards?

I've played the game at multiple parties, and nobody I've ever played with actually uses cards. The moderator (typically the host of the party) just picks a couple of Werewolves.

I have to admit, I've never really liked the game as I've always played it. The addition of new roles and rules for gaining information would probably make it more palatable for me.

This is a memory game that uses sounds instead of pictures. The electronic device effectively replaces the cards that would normally bear pictures, as well as handling the "shuffling" of the sounds by mapping them to different buttons for each round of play.

Pictures coming soon!

From a comment at the bottom:

Personally I'd remove ... games that are not playable sitting down at a table

You mean, like if there was an entry for horseshoes, or badminton, or baseball, or some other game that relies entirely on physical skills and doesn't even slightly resemble a boardgame? I totally agree.

This is the first one I thought of -- I ran across it in the database the other day. I own the book, so I added it to my collection, but I never would have thought to look for it.

I'm having difficulty coming up with a rationalization for this one. Anyone want to take a shot?

I'm not really sure why most CCGs (cardboard crack games) are on the geek. Few have anything resembling "boards". Yeah, I know, I'm one of the afflicted. That doesn't invalidate the question.

I think RPGs were removed because there were too many, and because there are enough sites devoted to them already. They're a bit of a different case compared to the other exception-to-the-rule "games" listed in this list.

I feel silly adding to a year-old conversation, but I couldn't help thinking of the German philosopher Wittgenstein and his discourse on the definition of "game."

From wikipedia:
"Wittgenstein's point is not that it is impossible to define "game," but that we don't have a definition, and we don't need one."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophical_Investigations#La...

As in most philosophy, I have no point, just something to ponder.
