5-16-09 This list is now alphabetical -- The list has grown too big and people keep putting duplicate entries because they can't find games.

This software is abandonware which is a software that is no longer supported or sold by the publisher. Hasbro, the current owner of all Avalon Hill titles, including 1830, probably does not like people getting illegal copies of 1830. However it is a trivial for them since both the board and video version of 1830 has been out of print for years.

** But it does not mean 1830 is free or ethical. **

Here is a link to Wikipedia's info on abbaonware:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abandonware

I got my NEW copy of 1830 PC game from ebay for $20.00 including shipping. :D

who are you to judge what is ethical.
i would in no way pay 20 bucks for this! anyway, a majority of abandonware games are put on abandonware sites by the developers them selves.

I'd actually say "the right to keep things out of print" isn't an ethical right under copyright. Its a legal right, but there isn't anything ethical about it.

Copyright is *purely* devised to encourage the production of works for the betterment of society. Abandoned/orphaned works do not do that.

The computer 1830 is a great way to learn 18xx games.

The AI, in general, has a problem with looking ahead, once you get to see how it works, it becomes simple. My favorite used to be seeing if I could own all the companies by the end of the game, or other arbitraty, kind of silly, goals.

How does this belong here? I thought the list was for games with AI only... this doesn't have any AI as it is a single player game, which makes it NOT fit in this list at all...

Got my hopes up that they had made a version of Agricola with AI that I could practice with and then you shattered my dreams!

AI can be set of instructions, sort of a script--if this happens, then do this. Most developers keep the script opaque so you cannot tell that you are playing script.

Example of an opaque script: El Grande the PC game has several AI's including a scripted AI. The script is hidden from the user so you cannot tell that you are playing against a script.

Examples of two transparent scripts:

corn simple script--2 Player Taj Mahal.doc
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/file/info/8733

coffee complex script--PoF - dummy player.doc
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/file/info/5469

Quote:
...
" 1. If he has less than 300 florins and at least one of his [the scripted AI player] Artists can reach the minimum Work Number for the turn (adding all Bonus cards): he produces a Work. He uses the Artist producing the best work (if tied: choose randomly) and plays all his Bonus cards with him. (See “About works” below, but raise the “gold number” by 300!)
...

Solitaire games as a variation of a scripted AI and thus a fit for this list of games with AI.

So does the game actually make a move based on the scripts? If it doesn't, what are the scripts for? If it does, how is it a solitaire game?

Just to be clear, this edition doesn't use the new map, but artillery and destroyers can be used, plus healing battleships. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the game knows how to tell when it's over. The interface takes a bit of getting used to, but it's better than the Hasbro computer versions I've got (regular A&A and Iron Blitz). No, no Marines or carrying 1 unit + 1 infantry in transports.

Since this isn't a 1.0 version, they might still intend to add the remaining new rules and the new map, but the page linked to is just a dev download page, so I couldn't tell.

Easiest way to get to play aginst the AI is to go directly to http://www.blokus.com/online-game/ and press the Quick Play button on the right hand side. A four player game will be ready to start with you playing blue. To swap (once only per game) with one of the other computer players: select the small arrow alongside the computer name, confirm you want them to leave, click "Take this Seat" and then click "Computer" on your original blue position.
