Quackle does not come with the official Scrabble board for legal reasons. You have to add (setup) a board and setup it up like this:

lauch Quackle
/Settings\ tab--click, among three tabs in the upper left area
[Add Board] button--click
click on the squares to cycle through the bonus colors
type in a board name, like official scrabble
[Save Changes]--click

if you do not add/setup the board Quack looks like this:

I found out a computer version of this existed due to a great geek list: Acceptable in the eighties (www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/44970).

Wulf Corbett posted a link to the computer version and I see it's not in this canonical (and wonderful) geek list. Looks like this was a favorite from many BGG childhoods.

I played it and it works.

=====

Formerly known as Tear Down Space Hulk
Rebranded as Alien Assault due licensing complications:

Quote:
... started this project back in 2006 together with Jorgen the game was not intended to be released to the public. When we were getting done with TDSH [Tear Down Space Hulk] V1.0 we noticed that many other people wanted to play the game so we released it as freeware. We did not want and could not make money on it. 18 months later and many discussions with GW and THQ lawyers we still wanted to release the game for free to the world. All we needed was for the game to go through THQ - using them as a publisher for our (still) freeware Space Hulk game. They decided to not publish our game [for free]. ... we quickly decided to rebrand the game and release it - still as a freeware product.

Nice version of Speed Circuit here:

http://cryhavocgames.net/GrandPrixcisionRacing.htm

It looks to be about 95% the same as Speed Circuit. It's not the exact game, but the differences are minor. Among the differences are that it adds a "driver skill" attribute to your car configuration (lets you modify the chance rolls), it lets you customize the number of starting points, and provides options for different ways to determine pole position. You can also race up to 20 cars (good luck if you only have a 40 start speed though).

AI Strength: meeplemeeplemeeple advanced (at least 3 -- it plays well, makes no obvious mistakes, and is even customizable. However, if you start at the front of the pack, it gets pretty easy to win consistently. Give yourself a medium or low start speed, and it is quite challenging.)

Interface: meeplemeeplemeeplemeeple good (I would say playing the game is a 4, but setting up a race is a bit of a pain, so 3- for that aspect. Some documentation would help. One big complaint re/ the interface is that if AI cars are in the curves, there is no way to see the max speed. Experience with a particular track negates this problem, but given the number of tracks available, it's annoying.)

Operating Systems:
Windows

Software Types:
stand alone

Licenses:
Free (I think the creator originally wanted a registration fee, years ago. It is apparently available for free now, with the programmer's permission.)

This game also includes a Track Editor, which except for a lack of documentation, is a great feature.

I have loved playing this game for years with my only hesitation being the time involved to set up and track all the phases. Then I discovered this wonderful pc version. It has great graphics and you can customize many aspects of it. There are a handful of scenarios included to get you going, but the real fun is creating your own scenarios and building your own ships/fleets. You can even customize the map to some extent. The logistics sheets are faithful to the board game and the pc handles all the updates once the battle starts and thereby removes a lot of the downtime involved in the "paperwork". A great effort by the author and a "must have" in my opinion far anyone who enjoys space combat.

I was recently asked to share my opinions on the games A.I. I can't really give it a rank, but it seems to play pretty straight forward. The games are always close if the sides are balanced and outcomes do differ using the same ships, but different tactics. I have played plenty of battles that have gone down to the wire with only a few shots meaning the difference between victory or death. The A.I. will almost always focus on taking out weaker ships first it seems like, so that can be capitalized on by a human player. I would say the key to quality play is balancing the sides. However, I also have fun trying out scenarios like 3 ships vs 2, but both sides being equal in combat efficiencies, defense, etc. Overall, I have never had any complaints with the A.I. but I am sure hardcore SFB and STSTCS players may disagree. I do not have any complaints with it and always have fun. Enjoy!

The url is: www.slightlysilly.net

Just look for the ST:STCS heading on the front page and off you go.

Happy Hunting,
Marlinus64
