need to use DOSbox if you want to play it in windowed moded and not full screen.

Instructions by the author:
...
Your first question is `Do you want a specific random seed?'. If you say yes to this, you are asked for a number, and if after playing the game you want to start another one with exactly the same starting conditions you can do so by using the same number again.

Next you choose the number of players and your colour, and then you have the option of either selecting your bikes' initial move factors or accepting a completely random choice by the computer. When selecting your own you will first choose whether you want Bike 1 to use 3 or 4 factors and then input the individual factors for each bike. In each case you need to input only 3 out of 4 or 2 out of 3 - the computer will produce the last one automatically.

From then on it's just a matter of reading the other players' moves and responding to prompts for your own moves. The program pauses after every move - just hit any key to nudge it forward. When you input your own, press the RETURN key once you're sure it's correct.

Display: The bicycles are all shown in their proper team colours and positions, and their rank in the team is displayed at their rear with the corresponding number of pixels, i.e. one to four (O.K., I realise that this is not ideal but the size of the screen does rather limit the options, and you soon get used to it!).

The track is represented as a large square with 11 positions on each side, the same as a Monopoly board. START is at the south-west corner, the FINISH line being at the top of position 100 at the north-east corner. SPRINT 1 is the bottom of position 34, SPRINT 2 being 40 positions later, i.e. the same place but no. 74. Each square on the track is numbered, and as the game advances the numbers change upwards by 40 to reflect the real positions of the bicycles. In the case where a square of track is occupied by two or more bicycles in different stages (i.e. bicycles lapping others) the number in the square will always correspond to that of the leading cycle.

When a bicycle is lapped it moves several places towards the outside of the track and acquires a short white line at its rear as a distinguishing mark.

Once eight bicycles have passed the winning post all the scores are presented to show a resumen of the position of each bike in the individual sprints AND the totals for each bike and team, together with a closing remark (sometimes rude) on your performance.

That's it. Good luck!

Version 8 is now available! The computer player has gotten more challenging - especially the "Timid" player, who is now merely timid, as opposed to "frozen in terror" as it was previously.

Also, you can now click on different radio buttons if you change your mind. You'll see what I mean...

There is a German version of this, from Koch Media, also with a hidden English interface. The game is available for download and purchase from softunity, an online german software shop. The software is great, AI and Interface both get 5 plus (the AI often overvalues fields, almost like if they give 4 or 5 points per city, even when set to 3 points). Highly customizable in terms of AI, rules and other options. High score lists and nice sound.

This game looked so cool so I traded to get a copy. Read the rules and realized that, everything is random: your abilities, how much equipment, how many equipment, where Darkness is and more. Not sure if there is any real choices that needs to be made.

However good theme and is tense--love the chainsaw sound from the online game.

Unfortunately, the AI is amazingly bad. In fairness, I didn't check to see if there were any harder settings, but with the default AI, it's hardly even worth playing.

I hate to be so negative, but I didn't like the interface either. The 3-D diagonal view looks cool, but is too difficult to play -- top down view would have been better.

The game basically amounts to a chess variant on a circular board, where all of your pieces are either pawns or bishops (and pawns can promote to queens if they reach the center). Could be interesting with a more useable interface and AI.

Unfortunately, it misplays the 3-player rules (discarding 4 cards, instead of giving every player 2 role selections). With 4+, it is pretty good though...

This was a welcome surprise.:)

I've even bookmarked it because I'm still learning the strategies involved, so far I've won 1 game ...out of several.

I've played the 3 player and 4 but, I don't like 4 as much the AI seems to be really good at kicking my butt. I had one turn where I got Assassinated, then Magician swiped my cards, OUCH.

I like it though, be nice if there was a regular PC version or even a console conversion.

NICE. I gotta try this. If this works, then I will gladly say f!@#$ BSW on this one. Mind you, their implementation of Citadels probably doesn't suck. It's just that they never incorporated the 2p and 3p 'adjustments' into the game. It was VERY difficult finding 1 more player, let alone 3 more of them.

I'll admit, the UI is a little rough. If I were to reimplement it, it would have a drag and drop interface. At the time, I didn't know how to accomplish that with any success in Javascript. However, I conquered that gotcha with my Ingenious implementation.

aquoiboniste wrote:

The players that have taken their row for the round have the row card placed in the upper left hand corner of their playing area.

aquoiboniste wrote:

the animated cards move along oddly angular paths,

Frankly, I was lazy in implementing the simple math to pull the card in a direct line towards the target location. Didn't figure it was worth the effort.

aquoiboniste wrote:

it's counterintuitive to have to click on the row card rather than in the space next to it where the card will go,

...a valid technical alternative. I thought it more intuitive to click on something you can see as opposed to clicking on 'thin air'. Your mileage may vary of course.

aquoiboniste wrote:

you're required to click several times even to acknowledge moves where you have no meaningful choice,

Agreed, it's lame but again, I was lazy. Nobody was paying me any money to make these aspects better so it just wasn't worth the effort.

aquoiboniste wrote:

the brightly-coloured background distracts from identifying the coloured cards,

A common complaint. I should mute that a bit.

aquoiboniste wrote:

the tower card moving around distracts from seeing what moves the AI opponents made,

I've had other compliments on the moving tower card so I'm caught in the middle.

aquoiboniste wrote:

and finally, the game hung halfway through with the tower card oscillating half-way between the first and second AI opponents, which is just weird.

A known bug if you're fast on the clicking trigger while cards are moving. Sorry about that. I just don't have the time to dig back into it.

aquoiboniste wrote:

I would like to thank Matthew, as all the authors of these games, for taking the trouble to make this applet and put it up on the Web for free. I for one got what I wanted from it, which was to get a feel for how the game plays without having to buy a set, and that's an extremely valuable service to those of us interested in discovering new games.

Excellent. That's why it's up there. My hope is to entice people to buy the physical game. Not to be pedantic but it's not an applet but all Javascript. No Java was used.

hmm.. in the real game, the first thing you do is take a card from the deck (online you click the deck), then you put the card on a row (online, you click on the row)
Seems pretty intuitive to me once you 'learn' it.
Quote:
you're required to click several times even to acknowledge moves where you have no meaningful choice
would you rather the AI play your move for you? Then people would complain it did that.
Quote:
the brightly-coloured background distracts from identifying the coloured cards
I like the high-resolution background, and have zero problems seeing the brightly-colored cards.
Quote:
the tower card moving around distracts from seeing what moves the AI opponents made
I like the tower card showing me who's turn it is. I dislike when AI's skip the computer's turns and make it hard for me to know what they did.
Quote:
and finally, the game hung halfway through with the tower card oscillating half-way between the first and second AI opponents, which is just weird.
That's never happened to me.
In fact, it has never crashed or glitched on me once, in probably 75 plays.

I still contend it is a FANTASTIC implementation, even if marquand is humble about your (IMO inapplicable) quiblles.
Multiple people I have shown it to have zero problems with it, either.

My two cents worth. Love the graphics, never had a problem(s) described above. Lots of entertaining fun....

You can play this one against 2 to 5 AI opponents. It's free for 2 weeks, along with another dozen or so games. After that, a fee is involved. I've been wanting to spring this one on my gaming group. Playing here, has imprinted the dynamics of the game in my mind, so I'll have no trouble at all teaching this to others. I don't have much trouble beating the AI opponents, but I don't know if it's my brilliance, or (more likely), the AI weakness. Still quite fun, though.

I agree: AI is not very challenging BUT you can play it in the multiplayer mode (for a total of 6 players) and then it's not the same thing...

I used to be registered for this one and had a great time playing at lunch. The implementation is well done. I cancelled my registration as they seemed to be more interested in creating new aliens rather than implementing the aliens from the old version of the board game. Being a huge Fungus fan I just couldn't wait anymore...

Another bonus (at least when I was playing) was that Peter Olotka was online a lot and was quite fun to play with.

I tried this link but got a 404 error.

The home page for the site is there http://www.kronberger-spiele.de/ but I couldn't find an English version of the site (only looked quickly though).

Some directions would be nice... and this isn't a board game. It's an RTS that heavilly rips off the dawn of the dead board game, graphics and all, so should it really be on here?

Press F1 for control reference and F10 for full help.

Of course it's based on "Dawn of he Dead" board game (that's why it's here...), but, as anyone can see, only the general board architecture and basic game concept are taken from the original (which, by the way, is out of print and copyright): all the graphics are created by us from scratch (note, for instance, that there are 9 different kinds of zombies...), and we have altered some aspects of the game (e.g. jacks, "zombification"). And yes, it's an RTS, but after all, all that board games do, is trying to simulate real time, using turns...

But it's not really much of a board game, which is what this list is about. It's an RTS. It's based off a board game, yes, but it is still an RTS.
