Free to play against CPU. Must pay small fee to connect to the Gametable service and play others.

The interface is fantastic as most of the implementations at Gametable are. Unfortunately the AI stinks. I gave it two stars; however, I am considering rating this as random. I always destroy the computer. I even tried taking a real long time completing my trip on purpose during one game and the longest connection any of my 3 cpu opponents had was 4 days. One of the opponents only had 1 day connected! In other words they had no two tiles that went together. You can almost do that by accident. I should have counted the amount of turns I took for this experiment, but it was a lot. Depending on what others report it might be worthwhile to move this down to 1 star.

miscellaneous links > http://home.earthlink.net/~gamecorner/lgc1830.html

Virutual Hotseat You can play a 2-player + AI game over the internet by using remote control software like www.logmein.com (free). Since there is no hidden game information, share your computer desktop over the internet with your friend and play 1830 on one machine. You run 1830 on your PC, your friend remotely sees your desktop on her PC and you take turns controlling the mouse pointer.

Adding additional players is possible but requires internetworking knowledge. I will explain an overview for those who have such knowledge.

Your goal is to setup multiple desktop remote control software servers, one per additional user running your PC, that is going to 1830 PC game. Then permit friends' PCs, running the matching desktop remote control software clients to control your desktop. You can accomplisth this by port forwading or using VPN. Using free VPN software Hamachi is easier way to accomplish this.

You can setup these free desktop remote control softwares, UltraVNC, RealVNC, or Microsoft's RDP for remote control software. You need one remote control software per player added.

Others: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_remote_desktop_so...

Then you you need to let your friends access to you PC by two methods:

1) You can open up your firewall
Then you can allow acces to you PC by open up the specific ports that the aforementioned software will be listening on.

2) You can use VPN
Setup a virtual private network (VPN) using free software like Hamachi, www.logmeinhamachi.com. Hamich is what the Wargame Room, www.wargameroom.com uses to play various war games. This should be easier of the two methods.

The game terminates right after the last move so hard to tell who one.

Gethostile.com shut down.

The ad revenue never came close to supporting the server needed to run Get Hostile! so I've had to shut the site down for now. However, I'm planning on launching some new projects in 2008 and I'll probably run Get Hostile! on a server with all my other sites as long as it doesn't kill the performance.

I've just played a game against the AI via a Mac. I'm surprised you had a problem, given it's Java, but if there was one they've fixed it. Nice implementation, as with all of the GTO stuff.

Yes, my preferred JVM was set to Java SE 6 64-bit, as noted on the GTO forum. Not sure if a different upgrade path made that the default, or if I changed it (probably for work). Either way give the fix a try if you've been having problems - it works without issue for me.

This version does not seem to allow a player to declare the game over if all corporations are safe. Furthermore it crashed for me when it became impossible for one corporation to reach 41 tiles.

I can't get this game to work. Whenever I click on an Element, put an Elemental on it, then try to place it on the board nothing happens.

Edit: This game doesn't work with IE 8, but works fine with Firefox.

How does this belong here? I thought the list was for games with AI only... this doesn't have any AI as it is a single player game, which makes it NOT fit in this list at all...

Got my hopes up that they had made a version of Agricola with AI that I could practice with and then you shattered my dreams!

AI can be set of instructions, sort of a script--if this happens, then do this. Most developers keep the script opaque so you cannot tell that you are playing script.

Example of an opaque script: El Grande the PC game has several AI's including a scripted AI. The script is hidden from the user so you cannot tell that you are playing against a script.

Examples of two transparent scripts:

corn simple script--2 Player Taj Mahal.doc
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/file/info/8733

coffee complex script--PoF - dummy player.doc
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/file/info/5469

Quote:
...
" 1. If he has less than 300 florins and at least one of his [the scripted AI player] Artists can reach the minimum Work Number for the turn (adding all Bonus cards): he produces a Work. He uses the Artist producing the best work (if tied: choose randomly) and plays all his Bonus cards with him. (See ā€œAbout worksā€ below, but raise the ā€œgold numberā€ by 300!)
...

Solitaire games as a variation of a scripted AI and thus a fit for this list of games with AI.

So does the game actually make a move based on the scripts? If it doesn't, what are the scripts for? If it does, how is it a solitaire game?

b) This is not the boardgame version - this is a timed, reflex-dependant computer game where you have to move the tiles accurately to get the bot to the treasures before he walks into the skull.

Just to be clear, this edition doesn't use the new map, but artillery and destroyers can be used, plus healing battleships. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the game knows how to tell when it's over. The interface takes a bit of getting used to, but it's better than the Hasbro computer versions I've got (regular A&A and Iron Blitz). No, no Marines or carrying 1 unit + 1 infantry in transports.

Since this isn't a 1.0 version, they might still intend to add the remaining new rules and the new map, but the page linked to is just a dev download page, so I couldn't tell.

So Triple A is "far better" playing other people while Game Table Online is better for playing with AI.

I don't have any experience with the AI on GTO. After I saw the inferface at GTO, I concluded that TripleA was superior. I was mainly interested in multi player, so yes I was evaluating from that perspective.

I would say the AI is
meeplemeeple - Beginner

If you know how to play, you aren't going to lose solo against the computer (playing either side).

It is good for practicing strategies.

Solo play against the AI is free at gametableonline, but you have to pay a one-time fee ($4.95) to play others.

HOWEVER, you can play against others for free if you do it through gametableonline's Axis & Allies app through Facebook. You can take alternate turns with others offline (it saves the game status) OR play live.

The Facebook app does go down occasionally but it's not as bad as it used to be.

edit-no longer free thru facebook. just go straight to gto.

This is an absolutely brilliant piece of software, especially for those trying to improve their game, as its analysis package identifies moves that might have been better and suggests alternatives. Doesn't tell you why the move is better (you'll probably need to get a book like Magriel for that), but gradually you get the feeling when to make points, when to escape your back man, when to attack, etc. I feel my doubling game is much better since I started using this software.

Quick Backgammon has always been a favorite version of my wife & I - light-weight and a good challenge. The UI is pretty basic, but it gets the job done.

You can find it here: http://www.xs4all.nl/~gverkade/quickbg

Simple, slightly abstract World War II themed card game but very tactical and highly addictive.

Well, I am heartened to know that others think the AI is tough. I've yet to beat this, in 30+ tries on EASY. soblue It always seems to have an answer to every card combo you manage to put together. I'd rate the AI

I've done a few session reports of games against the AI. I think they're pretty good for learning Hill 218 strategy and they show that the AI can indeed be defeated.

I just wanted to comment on the "over LAN only, not internet" part. If you use some VPN software like Hamachi or something like that, I'm sure you can play over the internet easily.

Easy doesn't seem that bad. It's a good teacher. (Version 1.3; after several losses, I beat the AI 3 out of 4 games playing second, and then once playing first a couple games later.)

Games that are added to this list must have:

* AI (artificial intelligence)
* If no AI then be a solitaire puzzle
* Enforce the game rules

Why this list?

1) The primary reason I created this list is so people can learn how to play a board games the way the designer and the publisher intended.

When I was new to modern European board games, pre-boardgamegeek era, I played board games with wrong rules because I did know what I was doing--like I said I was new modern board games. Playing by the wrong rules really changed some games to the point they were not fun to play. When you play a SoftBoard game, all the correct rules are enforced so you can play right.

2) The secondary reason is that I want people to be able to try a game before they buy a copy.

Unlike video games, unless someone you know has a copy and wants to teach it, it is hard to try a game before you buy it.

3) The third reason is that one can practice new strategies for a face-to-face game.

Enjoy,

--Sebastian

How are others avoiding possible problems with using this software?
I'd like to use Sandboxie to isolate programs for protection and complete uninstalling. But am looking for a cheaper alternative.

Excellent list! Thanks! (Now if only we could search on it like a database.)
