You can play classic turn-based Blood Bowl or in a real-time mode. Also, it states some pretty high requirements (or maybe they are average for today) but my computer is significantly older than todays standard and it is still playable, especially in turn-based mode. :)

I love Blood Bowl, and I'm looking forward to trying this game, but haven't done so yet because of the system requirements. From the Cyanide Website:

Quote:

Minimum:
WINDOWS XP SP2/VISTA
PENTIUM4 2.4GHZ/ATHLONXP 2400+ PROCESSOR
1 GB (XP)/2 GB (VISTA) OF RAM MEMORY

(NVIDIA GEFORCE 6600/ATI RADEON X700 OR HIGHER)*
2X DVDROM DRIVE
3 GB HARD DISK SPACE
DIRECTX 9 COMPATIBLE SOUND CARD
* INTEL, SIS AND VIA/S3G GRAPHICS CONTROLLERS NON-SUPPORTED

Recommended:
WINDOWS XP SP2/VISTA
CORE2DUO/ATHLON64 X2 PROCESSOR
2 GB OF RAM MEMORY

It's not really that bad, but if you have an old computer like mine, you simply don't have the right slots to upgrade to the required video card.

The AI deserves no more than one :meeple:, it is awful. If you know Blood Bowl at all, you will hardly ever lose a game, and only then if you're goofing off with a new team, or having fun with a Gobbo team.

That's obviously not true, because I know Blood Bowl, even though I profess no proficiency at it, and the AI was a constant challenge for me. So you might want to change your statement to "If you are really good at Blood Bowl, the AI is too easy." In which case :meeple: :meeple: :meeple: would be appropriate, since it is a challenge for those with a passing knowlegde of the game, but evidently not much more.

This is absolutely superb. If you have troubles with the installation, as the README says, e-mail Keldon. He answers, and is helpful! Don't skip this if you have a slight problem installing it.

Okay got it done. Apparently it is because I neglected to run the GTK file.

Once I actually hit the run button etc. on the GTK file, then reopened the desk top icon, we were off to the races.

You should also mention the other computer version of Borderlands: "Lords of Conquest" (Electronic Arts, 1986) that can be played either through DOSBox (PC version) or through a Commodore 64 eumlator.

need to use DOSbox if you want to play it in windowed moded and not full screen.

Instructions by the author:
...
Your first question is `Do you want a specific random seed?'. If you say yes to this, you are asked for a number, and if after playing the game you want to start another one with exactly the same starting conditions you can do so by using the same number again.

Next you choose the number of players and your colour, and then you have the option of either selecting your bikes' initial move factors or accepting a completely random choice by the computer. When selecting your own you will first choose whether you want Bike 1 to use 3 or 4 factors and then input the individual factors for each bike. In each case you need to input only 3 out of 4 or 2 out of 3 - the computer will produce the last one automatically.

From then on it's just a matter of reading the other players' moves and responding to prompts for your own moves. The program pauses after every move - just hit any key to nudge it forward. When you input your own, press the RETURN key once you're sure it's correct.

Display: The bicycles are all shown in their proper team colours and positions, and their rank in the team is displayed at their rear with the corresponding number of pixels, i.e. one to four (O.K., I realise that this is not ideal but the size of the screen does rather limit the options, and you soon get used to it!).

The track is represented as a large square with 11 positions on each side, the same as a Monopoly board. START is at the south-west corner, the FINISH line being at the top of position 100 at the north-east corner. SPRINT 1 is the bottom of position 34, SPRINT 2 being 40 positions later, i.e. the same place but no. 74. Each square on the track is numbered, and as the game advances the numbers change upwards by 40 to reflect the real positions of the bicycles. In the case where a square of track is occupied by two or more bicycles in different stages (i.e. bicycles lapping others) the number in the square will always correspond to that of the leading cycle.

When a bicycle is lapped it moves several places towards the outside of the track and acquires a short white line at its rear as a distinguishing mark.

Once eight bicycles have passed the winning post all the scores are presented to show a resumen of the position of each bike in the individual sprints AND the totals for each bike and team, together with a closing remark (sometimes rude) on your performance.

That's it. Good luck!

There is a German version of this, from Koch Media, also with a hidden English interface. The game is available for download and purchase from softunity, an online german software shop. The software is great, AI and Interface both get 5 plus (the AI often overvalues fields, almost like if they give 4 or 5 points per city, even when set to 3 points). Highly customizable in terms of AI, rules and other options. High score lists and nice sound.

It explains how to play in English in the information about the game:

Quote:
To switch the in-game text to english, simply open the file carcassonne.cfg (usually located in C:\Programme\Koch Media\Carcassonne) and change the LANGUAGE parameter from 2 to 1.

I have this, the AI in the base game is OK, but it is when you install the expansion that the AI ramps itself up. you can play with the first two boxed expansions, but even on Vanilla I would rate its AI as a 5.
the different opponents have different playing styles, but they all like to strand your meeples whenever they can.

This game looked so cool so I traded to get a copy. Read the rules and realized that, everything is random: your abilities, how much equipment, how many equipment, where Darkness is and more. Not sure if there is any real choices that needs to be made.

However good theme and is tense--love the chainsaw sound from the online game.

Games that are added to this list must have:

* AI (artificial intelligence)
* If no AI then be a solitaire puzzle
* Enforce the game rules

Why this list?

1) The primary reason I created this list is so people can learn how to play a board games the way the designer and the publisher intended.

When I was new to modern European board games, pre-boardgamegeek era, I played board games with wrong rules because I did know what I was doing--like I said I was new modern board games. Playing by the wrong rules really changed some games to the point they were not fun to play. When you play a SoftBoard game, all the correct rules are enforced so you can play right.

2) The secondary reason is that I want people to be able to try a game before they buy a copy.

Unlike video games, unless someone you know has a copy and wants to teach it, it is hard to try a game before you buy it.

3) The third reason is that one can practice new strategies for a face-to-face game.

Enjoy,

--Sebastian

I can't say anything about how strong the AI is, 'cause I havent played the game yet.

It's a java based game (stand alone) which works on Win XP.

The game includes Chrononauts and The early American Chrononauts.

You should probably add this as a separate item on the list! Also, thanks for posting this! I had no idea that card game existed, and time travel is one of my favorite themes. And I have played a few games now of this against the AI, and even though I am just learning the game, I have a fair grasp of it after reading the rules and playing a few games, and I still haven't managed to win. I'd be interested to see of this is a pushover or not for people that are already experienced with this game. But either way this is a great coffeebreak game!

Yes, but "anything" includes comments on items.

You can tell if it's a new comment or item, and it's not like it gets hundreds of new posts a day or anything.

Not HUNDREDS, but enough to be a pain in the ass.

My subscription for this list showed 7 comments and an item. I clicked on it and got the comments here at the end of the list. I then hit the back button and the subscription showed 1 comment and the item. A second click took me to a new entry for Heroquest. Another click of the back button showed I had one comment left to read. Click, a comment on Borderlands.

It works pretty well, but I do check this particular subscription regularly. If I let it pile up, it can take a while to go through the new stuff.

Wow! as of December 16, this list has 246 entries. I can't believe there are so many games here I haven't even tried!

I have no clue how to add items to the forum. I might give it a try tomorrow though.
I've played the game several times now and today has been the first day that I was succesfull. I've won 4 games in a row.
3 times by ID and 1 time by having the correct 3 Artifacts laying in front of me. It's still hard to tell if the AI is strong or not.
I havent played Chrononauts that often to tell.
