So you want to be the Emperor of Rome

There are some eras in history that draw more interest than others. WW II, American Civil War, Age of Piracy, Napoleon's Campaigns. They are moments in our history that draw both players and designers alike and they make for some fine games. One of the most popular historic eras is the Roman Empire. There is just something about that era that facinates people. So I thought it would be fun to sample a taste of Ancient Rome...BGG style.

Richard Berg is one of my favorite game designers and this is one of his best games I think (and one currently high on my wants list).

Another Richard Berg game. This one is currently sitting on the GMT P500 list, but not for long. It's got less than 10 more orders to reach the magic 500 number. Tried to decide between this and SPQR but chose this one simply because it was so close to 500 that I didn't want to miss out on the cheaper price.

Designed by Michael Matheny. Not just a great game of Ancient Rome but a great game period. One of my favorite games to ever come out of Avalon Hill. Plays in a good amount of time and is that perfect mix of theme and playability. I've been playing this game off and on for over 10 years and still enjoy it every time I get to play it.

Also by Michael Matheny. Avalon Hill pushed this game as sort of a sister game for Circus Maximus. Not as good as Circus Maximus (few games are imho) but still a fun game. I can't think of any other games that really recreates gladiatorial combat in the Roman Coliseum or even attempts to do so in a realistic manner the way this one does.

This list would not be complete if this game wasn't on it. I use to have this game but sadly no more. It seems that so many great Roman era games are out of print and this is a perfect example.

One of the early Roman games by Avalon Hill. Not bad at all, especially considering the time it came out.

Perhaps the greatest casualty of the loss of Avalon Hill was Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage (Well, that and Age of Renaissance). It was published just about as Avalon Hill was closing it's doors so it received a very limited print run. It is now the Holy Grail for many a board gamer. Perhaps some day this great game will see a reprinting.

From the minds of SPI. Not a great game, especially by today's standards but it still is one of the earliest Roman games, coming out in 1973.

In my opinion GMT is currently putting out the best games dealing with Ancient Rome and this is definately another example of that. Come to think of it, put this one up there next to SPQR on my wants/trade list.

I think this may have been my first game I ever owned that dealt with the theme of Ancient Rome. Not a bad game but when you look at the other games on this list it doesn't rate near to the top by any means.

A friend of mine has this and I'm looking forward to giving it a go. Looks like a card game version of Republic of Rome which wouldn't be a bad thing at all. It's worth a play or two at least in my book.

Very much on the lighter side of the Roman game coin. I found this the other day on BGG and I like the description "Play a gladiator, slave or even a lion as you do your best to win the favor of the Emperor in the Roman Coliseum. Combat isn't your only weapon, and remember, you don't have to run faster than the lion..."
Ok, the game likely is a stinker but I like the idea.

Lightly themed eurogame. Very good negotiation game set in the senate of imperial Roman.

Yet another lightly themed eurogame with beautiful long cards. Heard it is not bad, too.

Capitol:
Palace Building in India House and Temple Building in Rome of course
Rome is to be built on its 7 hills in the second century before Christ birth. The players slip into the role of building masters, who take part in the building of Rome. He who manages to attain frequently the supremacy over the prefectures (areas), gains important points and becomes so perhaps the winner of the game.
