This is a list for identifying the best games (In your opinion) for playing with kids; please add. Please state the target age range (which can be different than the advertised box age range), why you think it is really good, and lastly the enjoyment factor as an adult. The focus though is the kids; if it can be one you both enjoy of course, that is all the better.

This is one of the games that I consider an inspiration for this list. The target age on the box is 7+, but my 3 1/2 year old son is getting the hang of it. It is a blast! Exact opposite of Hi Ho Cherry-O - which he likes, but gets confused on when to take cherries out and when to put them in. While this is a dexterity game and has very little educational value, it really is great for increasing kid's hand-eye coordination. Plus it is just fun. I and a good friend of mine (we're both 40) love playing it as well.

I am on dangerous ground here actually... I expect to be trying this out on my son after he turns 4. But I have read the rules and it is very interesting. This a true Euro-gamer's game for kid gamers. It is like a simplified Mississippi Queen. It is a race game and while instead of your forward motion being entirely under your control it is a bit more under the dice control and it has a little less screw your opponent; I really feel with the tile movement, the sandbar, the tide, the favorable winds, the choices you have ot make, this is a great game.

My son started playing this at 2 1/2. It is a beautiful game. I t is still a little difficult for himi to understand exactly when to stop movement, but it helps his counting. In actuallity, it has simplified decisions of where you put the resources (bricks, timber, and grain) after you finish building that maximizes your odds of hitting them again, while minimizing your opponent's. While I like the game (gorgeous bits), it wouldn't be my first choice to play.

Gt this for him on the Xmas after his 2nd b-day (only one month after - he's a November baby); he really liked it. very age appropriate and it helped him learn basic shapes, the letters A, B, and C (I need to put in the expansion I got), primary colors, and the numbers 1,2, and 3. The colored balls going down the hole and opening treasure chest are brilliant!

His next craze. This is a really clever twister type game that injects a bit of education and following directions - put on your listening ears so you can hear what they tell you to do. he just loves to play with dad. I personally get a bit tired of it after a couple of games.

i don't know what the listed ages are, but i would think it would start pretty low. fun simple dexterity game with an "adult-balancing" factor: bigger fingers make the game harder.

My kids (7 and 10) and I really enjoy games in which there are tough decisions, bluffing and enough chaos so that any one of us can win. Their currrent favorites include Montgolfiere, Loco, Pickomino, Diamant and Piranha Pedro. Piranha Pedro has a simultaneous action mechanic involving lots of second guessing your opponents, tension and surprises.

My 2 1/2 year old daughter and I played this a couple of times tonight.

She enjoyed it quite a bit! The game helps her with taking turns, learn about drawing cards and placing counters and following simple instructions. Not sure how long it will hold her interest, but she likes it for now.

Age on box is 3-6.

This game would be from 5 to 99. It plays well with adults and kids. The only skill that limits the game is the ability to read numbers. My wife who I have a hard time getting to play games will even play it with us. I wouldn't say it beat Gulo Gulo from a fun factor but it is a good after dinner filler for the family. Also the rules are straight-forward enough for my daughters to explain it to their friend without my help.

Play tested on a 6 & 7 year old.

My kids (9 & 11) picked up TtR very quickly. They do, however play very differently.

My daughter (11) plays like an adult and grabs more 'route' cards.

My son never grabs additional 'route' cards. Instead, you can always tell when he's made all of his secret destinations because he lays 1 or 2 trains every other play at random disconnected locations throughout the board. draw...play...draw...play

I thought my kids would be bogged down with the sheer number of rules (relatively speaking) but 'bidding' for turn order, buying the native token, and specimen collection was no problem whatsoever for them. I only beat my son by one point and we all got the 5 specimen bonus.

I learned a good lesson that I shouldn't hold back on the full rules of a game or the introduction of the complete game juct because I don't think they're ready. From here on out, I'll teach them everything I get my hands on.

I am not sure if this is the "best" game for kids. But my 4yr. old son loves it. We had our first play together last night, and I noticed that he was able to apply counting skills and strategy. He was actually using his armies to block me from gaining access to the glyph which we used to play a capture-the-flag style game. Also, any of these games which are turn-based start to teach younger children about taking turns and sharing - which for some younger children can be a challenge.
I believe the game doesn't really matter, it's the positive bonding that takes place during gameplay. Plus, you've got yourself another geek to game with!!

We're looking forward to getting the expansion, not for the extra players, just for the chicken poo.

Can't let this go without adding my favorite kid's game: Enchanted Forest. It has a strong memory element (which kids are naturals at) but it also has a lot of strategy to it as well. All wrapped up in an attractive fairy tale package. And it's Ravensburger so you know the quality's pretty high. Fun for both kids and adults.

Geistertreppe (or Spooky Stairs) is another fun kids game. It's a simple roll and move game with the twist that after a short while all the pawns look the same and get mixed up. Good quality pieces. This is a pretty simple game but my kids like it a lot, particularly the younger ones.

This works really well - my 11, 10 and 8 year old all understand this, and play well. They all also enjoy talking through what they did right/wrong, and how they would change things next time through. I've never dumbed down rules for them, and am often the one struggling through the rules for clarification of something they have understood first time. We also play Citadels a lot, as well as TtRE, which my 10 year old has won EVERY session of.
