The Definitive DungeonCrawl GeekList is starting to get fairly definitive I think. Thanks for all of the additions so far. If you have others that have been missed, feel free to add them.

Note: This is not a list of fantasy or horror games. It's a list of DUNGEON games, so don't add a game unless it takes place in a dungeon!

For me this is the essential dungeon crawl game. It's probably also the simplest. That's why I like it. Explore the dungeon, kill the monsters, take the treasure, win the game. Good stuff.

This game is quite a step up from Dungeon. There are a ton of cards, chits, and even a few miniatures. I really like the game, except that you have to constantly consult the rulebook to learn what certain cards and tiles do. The dungeon in this game is ludicrously dangerous. The rulebook says that any character has about a 15% chance of escaping alive. Usually everyone ends up dead.

This game's hilarious. The center of the board is, of course, the dragon's horde. However, the more time you spend **in** the dungeon, means the less time you'll have to get **out** of the dungeon. Usually **somebody** finds out he doesn't have enough time to get out, so makes a suicide run to the horde and sees how much $$$ he can get. Others will attempt to wake up the dragon just to p*ss off everyone else grabbing loot in the horde. (: At the end of the game, we usually give out two awards: One to the winner, and the other to the "Richest Corpse in the Dungeon". I've usually won the game with a lowly 80gp gem. (:

My enjoyment of games is usually based on how many decisions I get to make. In this game there's pretty much only one: when do I turn around? So I don't like it very much.

This is the dungeon game you get if you want the dungeon to take up your entire living room. It's sort of like Dungeonquest, except that the dungeon has multiple levels (hence the need for tons of space). Oh, and you have a decent chance of surviving in this game.

See also Mystic Wood, which is a follow-up to this game that takes place in a forest.

Ok, it's seriously grungy nit-picking time for me here again.

This game is very much in the DungeonCrawl *style* with its underground venue, rooms, monsters, multiple levels and such.

But it's a Cave!

As Robartin himself said:

Quote:
It's a list of DUNGEON games, so don't add a game unless it takes place in a dungeon!

So the question now is, just how strictly do we apply the definition and/or normal usage of the term Dungeon here?

As a past player of AD&D and various other RPG board and computer games, I realize that an underground cave adventure is about as close to being a dungeon as you can get and, technically speaking, not be a dungeon.

So, seeing as this meant to be "The Definitive DungeonCrawl Geeklist", should we include Caves under the blanket definition of Dungeons or not?

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go enroll in Legal School.

Close enough to a dungeon for me. I was mainly trying to avoid having things that take place above ground or in a city added to the list. Think Zombies or Return of the Heroes or Mystic Wood for examples of stuff not to be added to this list. They are all essentially still dungeon crawlers, but the setting is entirely different than the games on this list.

Dungeoneer, on the other hand, is a tiny little dungeon crawl game that fits in your pocket. Well, until you add dice and glass beads, which are pretty much required to play it. The game has great artwork, but almost every card has a bunch of tiny text on it which can get annoying when it's across the table from you.

Been very enjoyable at work, in between the actual work. Fun little game, made more enjoyable by the various expansions, and time to play without having to stop in between moves, but fun nevertheless.

My truly poor quality box of HeroQuest have been used beyond recognition. Not only is it german (I cannot speak german, my mother translated the game when I was a kid), all miniatures are either broken or painted with baaad painting skills. All expansions (excluding miniatures) are available online.

Few days ago I looked through and cannibalized two different sets and two expansions that all had so many missing, beaten or ruined components that I ended up with enough figures, cards and other components for one complete set of Heroquest with nothing missing and some few extra components and everything in fine condition.

I remember playing this (Finnish translation of course) a lot as a kid, everyone seemed to play it too, but only few owned it, and sometimes other kids would do stupid things, like one boy who was so happy about finding second special artifact for his character that he took the cards home with him, and never returned them to me.

"Their mine, I have earned them...."

I have a Estrela's version of the game (from Brazil).
This is a very addictive game. The drawnbacks of this game (besides the high price):

Poor quality of the components (I think this only occurs on the Brazilian version from Estrela). Even the monsters/heroes are paper cards with a plastic base on it.

Many situations not present in the rulebook, causing some discussion on the play.

But I still love this game and recommends to everyone. meeple

This isn't a rating. It's just a meta-list of dungeoncrawls. The number is not the rating, but the order the game was added to the list.

This is probably the best of the Wizkids Clix games out there. Especially if you take it a step further and have one person play the monsters and the rest take heros. Then it becomes quite enjoyable.

Shame about the collectable aspect though...

I love MK. I also enjoy the collectibility of the game - it's fun opening a booster pack to see what you get. Plus, the game doesn't seem to suffer the same issues as most collectible games: More money = better pieces/cards.

I agree this is probably hands down the best clix game Wizkids ever did. Though I was seriously into MK 1.0 I eventually sold all my stuff except for the Dungeons monsters and heroes. The grid board made movement so much easier and the rules seemed well balanced. Plus it has tons of potential for player enhancements. Unfortunately it never seemed to catch on. Probably because it seemed more like a board game and didn't seem well marketed to the right gaming segment. This game probably would have benefited from a straight non-collectible release with nice box sets and expansions instead of boosters.

I agree about MageKnight Dungeons being the best of the bunch. I played this with my children and we used to have a great time. It's definitely more fun if you've got the dungeon furniture packs though.
I never had any luck with finding the traps pack unfortunately which was annoying.

I used to have this many years ago and have to admit that yes, it was one of GW's better games. Only me and a friend played it but we had days of fun including our own custom rules 'n stuff.

Shame I got rid of all my GW stuff years ago. Typical really as I've got a cool gaming group together and now if I stand a chance of getting any of the old classics (WHQ, Space Hulk and Necroumunda) I have to resort to ebay. And I don't really have the expendable cash to pay 100 odd quid for a game...

I first played WizWar in 1999. I thought, hey, cool, great game, who sells this and where can I find it? So I went online. There's Chessex, promising a release for the game later that year.

Every quarter they pushed the stated release date on the webpage back a quarter. Sometimes they didn't get around to pushing back the date until after six months past the promised release. Then they took to advancing it by six months, then a year, every time the deadline rolled by. Never any news, never any reason. For the last year or so it's been "undergoing revisions".

They've been sitting on this for a decade. I'll never buy a product from Chessex, even if they ever do manage to release WizWar. I'm not going to trust my money to any company so incompetent that it can't get a game out that its been continually promising for over ten years, and I'm not going to give my business to any company so irresponsible to its customers and so horrifically inconsiderate to a game designer. Tom Jolly has been waiting for a long time to see a new edition of what should have been one of his best sellers, he should have making well-deserved money from this game for ten years, but Chessex just sits on it, can't get the game out, and refuses to sell the rights to a competent company that could actually produce something.

The new swedish edition (from 2002) actually contains both the new and the old characters, nearly unchanged (except for a few statistics). I must say that this was a bad decision since the old characters are really boring compared with the new.

I love the Dungeonquest game. However, I found that the Heroes in the expansion need a little tweeking at least. The Chaos Wizard should win every time with his ability to walk through walls. Anyway, still a fun game.

God I remember this. I think my little bro had it. It was ok as far as I remember. Probably a bit shallow these days but nostalgia tells me it was fun.

This time, instead of cards, the dungeon is made of of tiles, giving it more of a boardgame feel than a cardgame feel (though it stil uses cards). There was a Dungeon Wars 2, but no need to clog up the list with too many similar stuff.

This is one of the more recent dungeon crawl games. Another Tom Jolly creation. I haven't played it but it looks to be a fairly good dungeon crawl AND a decent strategy game which isn't always the case in this catagory.

The original theme of this game was an archaelogy site, so no wonder it doesn't have a dungeoncrawl feel!

It doesn't feel like a dungeon crawler because it isn't. This is an area superiority game with a Dungeon theme tacked on. You win by having your forces occupy the higher-scoring areas of the board. Nice game, anyway, I recommend it.

I found drakon to give the players far deeper gameplay experience than dungeonquest. Drakon makes the players plot and scheme to pick on the winner. In Drakon every turn is a question of helping yourself or screwing your neighbor.

Yeah, I gotta say I don't get the comparison with DungeonQuest at ALL. This is a much, MUCH better game, with the only similarity to DQ being that it's in a dungeon. And this one actually requires thinking.

This game has as much similarity to DQ as tiddlywinks to Cosmic Encounters. DQ = Mindless mayhem. Drakon = semi-mathematical "beer and pretzels" tile game. Both are fun, but for different reasons.

I recall years ago (late 70s!) writing a computerised version of this which was much easier to play than the rather fiddly board game.

This one has a castle (almost a dungeon), cave (again,...), a field and a city, with much nastier critters than Hero Quest, with a time limit driven by the approach of the Dragon! Actually a pretty entertaining game, but derivative. But, the list isn't definitive or terribly crawly without this'n.

In this game, two players set up dungeons on separated boards like those in Battleship. Then each player moves through his opponent's dungeon, battling nasties and collecting treasures. The Japanese influence on the monsters and components is very evident. A cool looking game.

At first I thought, things sure have changed, I remember when the old "satanic D&D" uproar came and went, but I don't think anyone would be too surprised to see members of the U.S. Congress railing against satanic board games today. I'd be more surprised to see a rational debate on foreign policy.arrrh

Just for fun, I was browsing online the other day for on-line D&D stuff, just to see what was out there in the way of free or open-source playing aids, and I stumbled across one of the 'D&D is a tool of Satan!' websites. I hope beyond hope it was a remnant of old days - but, somehow, I don't remember too many websites back in the late 70's/early 80's when all the uproar was going on, so I'll reluctantly have to admit that - yes, some people are still stupid.

(And, no, I'm not going to link said website. Mostly because I'd hate to give them free hits on their site, but also becasue I didn't actually make a note of what the address was... )

Yeah, well, while I agree they share in the same "spirit" of a dungeoncrawl, the list's creator explicitly said:

"Note: This is not a list of fantasy or horror games. It's a list of DUNGEON games, so don't add a game unless it takes place in a dungeon!"

So that's probably why these games aren't here.
