I'm always astonished when I find an abstract game I enjoy. True, I cut my teeth on chess back in the 1950s, but even then and ever since, I've always preferred games that immerse me in a story.

But I'm very fond of the abstracts I'm posting below, and will play them pretty much any time. If you also usually prefer theme, I'm curious if you also like these games, or if it's just me.

I'm allowing additions, but would prefer only people who also usually prefer atmosphere and theme to add their favorite abstracts.

I almost included some games such as En Garde or Würmeln, as they're pretty close to abstracts. But they feel like just enough of the themes (fencing and worm racing, respectively) to be disqualified. However, I *have* included some ostensibly themed games where the theme is just too thin to be believeable.

This may seem like a lot of abstract games for someone who professes not to like them, but as you'll see, they've been slowly added over many years.

They're not arranged in any particular order, BTW - just as they occurred to me.

Ta Yu captivated from the moment I first saw it. There's something about those classy tiles on the dark board that just drew me. When I found out how easy it is to switch between offense and defense - even doing both in the same move - I was hooked. I love this game, and have actually shaded in the circles on the backs of the tiles. This game actually has a theme, but it's so thinly pasted on as to count as a pure abstract.

That puts the sick in sycophant

Well, at least you're not trying to kid Amy you like her for her mind.

This game does look great; I just don't think I'm ever going to try it because of our groups' tastes.

I picked up Kaliko in the 1980s at Origins one year and have never regretted it. It's a beautiful game, and surprisingly fun for someone who wants theme. The play is easy and while it's harder to make skillful moves than in Ta Yu, it still rewards thoughtful play.

I don't know Tantrix, but it appears to have four colors of paths, while Kaliko has only three. One of the comments also states it would be nice if the game had a tile for every possible combination - Kaliko DOES have a tile for every possible combination.

The only game in the GIPF project to grab me, Yinsh is a lot of fun to play. I'm always afraid it'll turn into a slow brain-burner, but that hasn't happened yet. Things get pretty wild pretty quickly, and you find yourself making strong attacks and desperate defenses frequently.

This is probably my favorite abstract. My wife hates abstracts, but I enticed her into trying this one by telling her to imagine the rings are UFO's, planting pods to subvert the populace to the other side. She was amused enough at my feeble attempt to theme the game that she tried it, and actually ended up liking it too.

The pieces have a nice, asthetic "feel" to them, as well.

But it doesn't take long to play three rounds of Meander and it feels like a filler. I love to watch the marbles - something very satisfying about this. I would *love* to get hold of the Meander Expansion Set ( http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/17403) - if anyone has one for trade or sale, please contact me!

How do you bare the times such as when you are hovering around your GOOTMU waiting for the exact die roll needed to pick it up?

I've played this twice and one of the other players was really turned off by this "wait to get lucky" aspect. I was thinking about mitigating this by having the rule be you roll 2 dice and pick which one to use, making the game go faster and giving more choices to boot.

Like Ta Yu, Tom Tube has a theme but feels like an abstract game. I'm really lousy at this game - I think my record is something like 1-for-15 - but I love it. I think I try to bowb too much, and that's why I don't do well. I still enjoy it!

This is a good game, even more interesting than Streetcar. Pretty strong theme for an abstract I'd say.

Been on and of the fence with this one too.

We enjoy Cronberg (also by the Goslar brothers), though I'm not nearly as good at it as my husband. I somehow fall out of 'tempo' when playing.

Another game with a thin theme that doesn't convince. We only play with closed hands - way too cerebral for us with open hands. It's a light, fun filler played our way, though.

That could be true - at least the inverse is true. I find Through the Desert to be very boring, but I like Fjorde. (For what it's worth, I've only played TtD three times, then retired undefeated.)

I find this an odd comparison; I find TtR and TA are similar in complexity and depth, with TA perhaps slightly deeper.

Awale. I learned this game while a migrant worker in France in the early 1970s. I learned it from a fellow from Côte d'Ivoire (the Ivory Coast) and never even came close to getting half his score. I've never taken to the standard Mancala rules included in most sets sold in the USA, but still enjoy Awale, and have a review on my web site.

The attempted theme here just gets in the way, IMO (both Bruno's original and SJG's). This is a great abstract game, and the only way I'll play chess anymore. It turns a long-term strategic, cerebral game into short-term tactical chaos where you have to react to your opponent's surprise move practically every turn. Try to be both offensive and defensive every move - I love it!

This game is a lot of fun. Every time we went to my grandma's, my dad and I would pull this one off of the shelf and play. There's a real balancing act to the whole thing because you have to decide if you want to move a piece into the final area for permanent safety or get another piece that is farther back out of danger.

If you get this away from the awfully-designed box this is a very attractive-looking abstract--in a 60s-era Star Trek kind of way. And weighty little steel chromed balls are very mesmerizing. The game is not so challenging once you figure out the puzzle, but still a fun little diversion.

I like this list so far. This has been my favorite abstract lately (ignore the pasted theme). With three ways to win (capture their king, capture 3 towers, or get rid of all your markers) the game lets you play more than one strategy at once.

All right, now I'm trying to find out why these particular abstracts appeal to one who normally prefers themed games.

Here are the twenty I posted, this time in alphabetical order:

Awale
Blokus
Can't Stop
Carabande
Chase
Confusion
Fjorde
Flinke Pinke
Flowerpower
GOOTMU
Kaliko
Knightmare Chess
Knockabout
Meander
Renju
Rosenkoenig (played with closed hands only)
Scoozie
Ta Yu
Tom Tube
Yinsh

So let's see what they have in common, if anything:

1. Attractive: 13/20 - Awale (I have a nice set), Blokus, Carabande, Fjorde, Flowerpower, Kaliko, Meander, Renju, Rosenkoenig, Scoozie, Ta Yu, Tom Tube, Yinsh.

2. Games that make us smile/laugh: 6/20 - Can't Stop, Carabande, Confusion, GOOTMU, Knightmare Chess, Meander. (This includes four that are not above. So combining, we get Games that are Attractive OR that make us smile/laugh: 17/20.)

3. Lighter games, in terms of light-medium-heavy thinking required: 12/20 - Blokus, Can't Stop, Carabande, Fjorde, Flinke Pinke, Flowerpower, GOOTMU, Knockabout, Meander, Rosenkoenig, Scoozie, Ta Yu. (Most of the others are medium rather than heavy.)

4. Games with strong bowbing potential ( http://www.panix.com/~sos/bc/bowb.html): 9/20 - Awale, Blokus, Fjorde, Flowerpower, GOOTMU, Knightmare Chess, Meander, Ta Yu, Tom Tube.

5. Games with at least *some* theme, no matter how thin: 9/20 - Carabande, Fjorde, Flowerpower, GOOTMU, Knightmare Chess, Rosenkoenig, Scoozie, Ta Yu, Tom Tube.

6. Short playing time: hmmm - this seems to be the common link. 19/20 (all but Knightmare Chess) are fairly short games. (Though we're not very good at Carabande so everyone failing the jump repeatedly can take a while!)

Anyone else see any stronger common bonds? Why would I like these but not like Through the Desert, Octi, Hive, Clans or Trax? I'm truly curious about this!

thanks for this list; I game with "Mike in Ithaca" who likes strongly themed games, while I tend to prefer weakly themed games and abstracts.

I think the best way to determine why other games (hive, through the desert, etc) don't appeal to you is for you to state your reaction to each game -- what don't you like about each one? It may be idiosyncratic ... or it may become clearer what the differences are between the games you don't like and the ones you do.

It seems like you would enjoy Clans and Through the Desert. They both fit all six of the common bonds above (No. 2 might be a stretch for TtD but we've laughed alot playing Clans).

Octi on the other hand, is definitely not your game. Not many common bonds here: it's a longish game with good players (with beginners it can be over in a flash), it's fairly heavy, has no theme, and is neither attractive nor mirthmaking. Nevertheless, I enjoy it!

I haven't played Trax and I share your lack of enthusiasm for Hive.
