This is a Metalist of my recent 7 geeklists indexing/categorizing word-games, mostly letter-by-letter games. I've also included links that helpful Geeks sent my way. Thanks to GamesGrandpa for the encouragement for both the lists and the idea to make a Metalist.

If you know of any other Word Games lists, please leave a comment and I'll add it to the list!

Letter-by-Letter Word Games FAQ

When I started trying to categorize word Games, Steffan dropped me a note. Check out this AWESOME database of Word Games!

"Originally Compiled by Steffan O'Sullivan and now maintained by Graham Toal.

"This is an attempt to list the letter-by-letter word games that have been published -- called 'letter-by-letter games', or 'word-building games', to distinguish them from word games which use whole words, phrases, sentences, etc. Examples of the latter include Taboo, Guestures, Trivial Pursuit, and Charades; all of which can be considered 'word games', but are outside the scope of this list. Instead, this list focuses on games in which the basic element is a letter, and words are built up from there."

Actually I do keep this page updated, but I'm terrible for forgetting to update the 'last edited on' date!

At least as of April 2007, the page is still regularly maintained. It's just that we're running out of new material to add!

More Word Games from Graham Toal

This appears to be a different format of the above database, though I haven't had time to explore it. Have fun!

"I haven't updated the main board game page much in the last couple of years as I've been concentrating on the software side, however I *have* been bookmarking new games that I found and I'll eventually do one big update.
Meanwhile, here's something to whet your appetites:"

Graham Toal here - thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately I lost my photo album cgi when I had a disk crash and have not yet restored it. I do have another page which has *MANY* of the images in one page:

This is on my home server so although browsing the thumbnails is not a problem, please don't spider the whole directory. If you want a copy, mail me and I'll find somewhere else to put it that won't slug my home line!

Word Association Mechanics by David Meredith

David Meredith has given some thought to the mechanics behind word-based word games. This is more detailed than my own "Word Based Word Games" list (#6), which I created before I knew his existed. Here is David's description of his list...

"This is merely a list of methods used to 'pass' a word to your partner in Word Association games with an example of each mechanic.

Word association games are party games. Though trivia games could be considered word association, I stick to the games that require a player to give clues in some manner in order to induce a partner to guess a given word."

Ah! Now that's one to pull the hair out trying to categorize! Since it gives you the words and you just have to decide where to play them, it probably wouldn't fit in the categories I have so far (where you have to come up with the words yourself). Now, what would you call such a mechanic and which other games would go with it?
