This list has probably been done before, but I enjoyed doing it.

Feel free to add to this list.

(Note: This list is done from the point of view of a US gamer, since I'm American.)

You read game rules for fun.

This was the inspiration for this list. I'm a relatively new gamer. I found myself downloading the rules for this game and studying them, and realized I had crossed some kind of threshold - the point of no return.

Worse - you download rules to games you don't even own and read those. DH for some reason thinks it is HYSTERICALLY funny that the printout of the PDF of the rules to Beowulf is sitting on our bathroom counter right now.

Oh my gosh! A tremendous weight just lifted from my shoulders!

On the way to and from work (generally by cab, I don't drive, and am usually only partly coherent at either time), I find myself doing that very thing -- anything from Settlers to Arkham Horror. I often do that when drifting off to sleep as well, although I'm one of those annoying people who's out in seconds.

I honestly thought I was the only one!

I suspect it means something along the lines of:
The boardgmer(something) is a grand old timer and (drain?)-of-German-Marks, No? the players have been bringing shame and embarrasing themselves.
Thanks!

Not good enough for me to have any faith in my translation... but I was shocked to find verbs away from the right hand end of sentences, so it can't be German...

There's actually a lot of disagreement about the origin of Istanbul as the replacement name for fallen Constantinople.

One interesting theory is posted above... another is that it's a bastardization of the Greek: "eis tin poly" - "to the City". "Poly" or "Poli" our root for "polis" means city, and to a Mediterranean of the time, there was only one "THE CITY." So there you go. All explanations on the topic are speculative, though, so take it with a grain of salt.

Similarly, in Republican and early Imperial times, Romans often refered to their capital simply as Urbs "The City".

My gf was recently in a production of West Side Story, and henceforth one of our favorite things to do is to sing:

This one doesn't fit me at all. Only when a game is dreadfully bad as written or has a problem with pacing will I alter the rules. Even then, though, I don't tend to change the mechanics. For instance, I will add a timer for the trading round in Chinatown but I won't play with the silly random bonuses for payouts. One streamlines the game, the other changes it. I resist change.

I'm lucky here. My wife has NEVER refused an offer to play a board or card game, and she's often the one to suggest it. And we have many friends close by who are nearly always ready for a game. I haven't gone more than a day or two between games in years, and even that's rare.

In th early 90s I gave away 4 carefully constructed Magic decks to my friends, just to get them started. It produced years of playing :-) Although they never became the collecting die hards I hoped for.

Lately I tried to get them into Through the Desert, and this time I didn't need to buy them a camel. Pffft, lucky me.

When you live in a college dorm, finding new gamers is ridiculously easy. I started gaming while on an internship last summer. I returned a changed man, with a copy of Power Grid in tow. After getting back, I introduced it to a few friends here at the dorm. Now there's over a dozen gamers here, and spontaneous game nights are a common occurance.

That's brilliant (in a "Come to the Dark Side, we have cookies" kind of way).
I've been finding all my new opponents and gaming opportunities through Meetup.com. Right now my wife and I play every Tuesday. Last week we went to one on Friday, and I had to pass on the one on Sunday because I spent all day Saturday playing D&D (I need a maid to do housework so I can go play games more).

SHHHADDUPPP, The Lot of You! We're Not playing right now!

I always try to do a multiplayer-solitaire playtest of as many newly-purchased games as possible.

One of the standard behaviours I've evolved with these playtests has to do with the player colours.

The most common player colours seem to be Blue, Green, Red and Yellow (with Black and White close behind). This is also my order of colours from Most to Least favourite.

I always set the player order up in that order, Blue going first and so on. And since Blue is my favourite colour, I usually end up 'rooting' for that colour.

> Me1: Yaaaay, Blue! <
/ Me4: Booooo, Blue!! /
I thought I told you guys to Shaddup!!?

I only this morning finished a 3-"player" playtest of Elasund. And Blue won.

Now, even if I don't count these sessions as 'real' games, I figure when I start keeping track of which "Me" wins each playtest, I'll know it's time to purchase a one-way ticket to the Funny-Farm!

{ Me5: Who's to say we haven't passed that point already!? }

Sadly, this is how I get my Catan: Cities & Knights fix. I use the Hot Seat version of s3d's C&K. I have 4 stock players that each use a different strategy. Even more sad, some players refuse to trade with others because of previous beatdowns and offenses. I had to standardize trading rules.shake

When I last bought a few new games I realised that there wasn't enough zip-bags, so I went out to get some. Unfortunatly I had to order them (those day I waited for my delivery of zipbags where indeed long) and because I didn't want to wait 10 days instead of 3 I had to order 1000 zipbags of each sort... So now I don't have to buy new ones for a while I imagine...

We were keeping our D&D dice in Crown Royal bags in the mid-70's, so it goes back a ways. I'm sure it morphed from kids keeping their marbles in them, before we had dice to worry about.

I can't imagine any use for them myself, but my kids apparently have many uses I don't know about. They ask for them, and then they disappear.

Nah, who am I kidding? I know they're probably just stuffed in the couch.

I do this.
Most of the "Eurogames" come packaged with a nice tray, and if you discard the sprues, the game board does not fit snugly down on the tray when the lid is closed. I stack the punched out sprues on top of the game board before closing the lid. Even if I tilt or tip the box a lot, the lid holds down the board and sprues firmly against the tray and the pieces can't shift.

Not war so much, but I kind of stun my friends that my entire knowledge of Lord of the Rings is based on Knizia's Lord of the Rings, Lord of the Rings: Confrontation, and War of the Ring.

Check that. War too. Isn't there some William Wallace fellow in some movie or other?

Can't say this applies since I have a degree in history.

However, I could recite the characters of Frank Herbert's Dune, identify all of the territories and their significance, and describe the various weapons, approximately 12 years before I ever got round to reading the book.

I wore out my first set of RoboRally cards and now I make sure I have backups of anything that I think I will wear out. When I got the Amigo version of RoboRally, the cards went into sleeve protectors. But now I am up to an additional 2 backup decks. Too bad, I didn't order a bunch of decks when WotC allowed you to order componets individually. Now I know better.

A couple of years ago, all someone had to know was your name, number, and work number. Now, it's your username, your messenger username, your *other* messenger username, your bbs name, your *other* bbs name, your email address, your *other* email address, your home number, your work number, your cell phone number, and maybe even your real name!

And why should you be known by your "real" name? You didn't choose it!

Well the rules are the best part. Sure the board and/or components give you a look. But the rules engage your imagination. You picture how they work, and interact. what might be a good play, even if you've played the game. That's always the first part of the game I look at when I open the box. And I don't think any of my games have the rules actually in with the box, they are always carried with me hither and yon until I get a new set of rules to poor over. Or perhaps an older set catches my eye and I want to "just check it to see if there was anything I forgot."
