The geek list only a cheapskate would appreciate!

I am always in search of the great games that you can
make with stuff around the house. I personally have
saved tens of dollars (on shipping at least) by
creating these games at home rather than buying the
game.

If you have any homemade games in your collection that
you would like to share, please add to this list! Feel free to share pictures/comments of your creations with me.

You can make this board with posterboard and construction paper. Grab some dice from your Yahtzee/Stack/D&D games, and you are set! What a geek!

OR, you could spent about $5 on ebay for the actual game above. Did you calculate how much time it would take to put stars on 31 dice?

I've played Liar's Dice a bunch of times (with a bunch of normal D6) and this is the first time I even heard of there being a game board for it. What function does it serve?

If not Spanish, this is certainly a popular Spanish game. The Spaniard traditionally spends a lot of time in bars and is a slow drinker, has to be, the bars don't close until the last client feels like going home (or collapses in the corner) and they have more card and dice games than a boardgamegeek convention, not only that, they have cool poker dice (King, Queen, Jack, Red, Black, Ace) and really cool decks of cards (like tarot, the coins, the cups, the wands and the swords) which they often use in decks of 40.

If you know Spanish or have access to someone who knows spanish, look up juegos de dados, or maybe I'll get back on comps this summer and translate for you guys

One cool thing about the Perudo set is that it comes with 6 different colored cups (made of some indestructable space-age plastic) with matching dice.

My dog chewed up one of these indestructible cups.

I'll admit it. You might have trouble finding 25-30 dice in your game collection, but you can buy them cheap at your local department/hobby store. The rest are just cards you can make with your computer & printer.

It is just a deck of cards with five suits and a board to tell you where the expeditions should be placed... I use a deck from my game collection called Five Crowns (see below). Don't forget! You can play Lost Cities with a standard deck of cards! See the rules variant.

It's obvious this game was developed with a deck of cards. The lack of Aces is pretty easy to explain- they were made into the board.

Yes, you can buy decks with five suits, but unless you have it already it probably costs as much as actually buying lost cities.
You could probably just play it with 4 lost cities and a normal deck for a slightly shorter lower scroing game.

And yes the Aces are the board, and the face cards the multiplier hands. I thought of that the first time I played the game. I thought it was obvious, but I guess maybe it isn't.

I know of two people who have made their own sets. The better of the two used an existing AtoA set and lots of scratch paper.

The judge would draw an existing AtoA green card and have everyone write down an answer for the new red card. Once there is a suitable pool of red cards, the process was reversed. The judge would write down a new green card and everyone would play one of the new red card from their hand. Between plays the scratch papers were culled and placed into card sleeves. There are also a number of blanks in both decks to keep the process going.

This game has lots of very strange cards, with many references to gaming, rpgs, anime, computers, cult movies & TV. It's rude, crude and only occasionally makes sense (even to the people that created it).

You only need half a full sized deck to make a board for this. Simply cut the cards in half before you glue them down.

It actually does matter how the board is laid out, as each card has two possible locations that it relates to. By changing the board you change the relative position and distance between those two locations.

Quandary is quite possibly the most over-produced game ever (the Franklin Mint editions of classic games are also in the running, although that's the point of those editions). I sold mine for a good amount, and acquired Flinke Pinke for about $5.00, and never looked back. Flinke Pinke has the exact same gameplay (while occupying 95% less shelf space), and plays with up to 5. I think Quandary only went to four.

Can't Stop must be trivial to make at home. A pair of dice, and a sheet with 10 tracks on it.

Er, and that's two pairs of dice. And 11 markers for each player. And three pawns.

Still pretty trivial, but there's a little more to it than you let on.

My wife and I draw the board on a scrap piece of paper. Then you just need 4 dice, 3 temporary markers (e.g. coins), and a different color pen per player.

I made my own copy of this. I have a chequered tablecloth that I cut a board from, and then put some numbers on poker chips. It might be fun to remake this when I have a good idea for a theme - but the game is pretty abstract.

It took me 2 minutes to make, but if you think that's quick then look at the Fantasy Flight version.

UPDATE: The game is no longer free, but the PDF downloads of individual scenarios are inexpensive, and the scenarios also are available in pre-printed books, all for purchase at the website, GHOULASH.com. In addition, there's a simplified sample scenario for free download.

Fun game. Expensive to buy on the second hand market, though, and I could not find it new. The components are top notch, but easily remade cheaply on your own.

I liked the game enough to want to play, but not enough to spend $40.00 or more for it. So... I bought a sheet of poster board with 1" grid already drawn on, a 3/4" rubber Kangaroo stamp, and bunch of (21) pawns at a craft store.

I drew in the lake & stream with markers, and cut the board down to 18x16. I used the stamp to make a checkerboard pattern to aid players making longer jumps, and spray painted the pawns, 5 each in red, white, blue, and green, and one in black. Then I laminated the top surface of the board at Kinko's (a copy store). I used spray adhesive to attach it to some 3/16" foam core board. Finally, I downloaded the rules from the geek.

Works great.

Take the Ace(1) to Ten of Hearts(Red); Diamonds(Yellow) and Clubs(Green) from two packs of identical playing cards. Add one each of Queen of Hearts(Red Dragon); Jack of Diamonds(Yellow Phoenix); Jack of Clubs(Green Phoenix) and Ace of Spades(All Colour One).

This will allow you to try the game cheaply. If you like it, and if you like card games, you probally will, it is well worth investing in the game. It is easier, (and 'nicer', to play with the design, colour etc. of the supplied cards. My feeling is that it is slightly over-priced for a card game but if it still cheaper than many and you do get a years free access to the on-line game.

Not sure how cheap it could be made, but images of Mah-Jongg tilesets abound on the internet, particularly at http://www.mahjongmuseum.com.

I personally reccommend #020, Black Plastic Flat Travel Set ( http://www.mahjongmuseum.com/mj020.htm).

There's a big problem with trying to play Mah Jongg with printed cards -- you don't get the clatter of tiles, the whole tactile thing. Heck, "mah jongg" means "the chittering of the sparrows"!

I have seen mahjong cards floating around in my local gaming store. While not having the charm of tiles, they are cheaper and it really cuts down on the space required to play.

Don't bother with the cards. I've tried using them before, and they are a royal pain in the a$$ to use. They end up taking far more space to play with (you have to display all the discards) and you loose the best part of the game - the tiles.

The only thing the cards have going for them is that they are smaller and easier to carry...

I was actually surprised at how easy it would be to construct an Auf Heller und Pfennig set. Even after purchasing the Kingdoms edition from Fantasy flight, I'm probably going to make my own card-based version for sheer portability sake.

What you need:
62 tiles/cards/whatever
6 negative point tiles, numbered 1-6
12 positive point tiles, numbered 1-6 (2 of each number)
2 wall/mountain/barrier tiles
1 dragon/whatever tile
1 gold mine/whatever tile
10 castles/shops/whatevers for each player, numbered 1-4
4 ranked 1, 3 ranked 2, 2 ranked 3, 1 ranked 4
Some way to keep scores

Kingdoms has 1195 available points in tokens, but I have trouble envisioning all of them getting used. Most 2 player games end under the 400 point mark per player.

I forgot to mention that you also need a 6x5 grid on which to play. If you're playing with small tiles, a cloth chessboard (or ChessKerchief as I like to call them) would work. For playing cards, you could either have a play mat, or use 11 cards along the edges of the play area to show its shape.

I was just thinking about a portable (or more specifically, on-the-fly-creatable) card-based edition this morning.

I prefer to keep the 'medieval market' theme rather than 'kindgoms')

My thoughts were (think black good, red bad):

A-6 of spades and clubs (positive) and diamonds (negative)
2 Jokers as fire/mountain (in theme: bards/entertainers. Distract the marketgoers... can't see what's on the other side)
King of Diamonds as the King of Taxes (evil eye, Dragon)
King of Spades as the King of Plenty ('Gold Mine'/'Bag of Gold')

Use 30 of the 32 remaining cards in the deck to lay out the 'table' with 30 facedown cards. These cards are never flipped over, they just show the 30 spaces that can be played-upon.

Pocket change as wares: pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters as 1, 2, 3, 4 value wares, one player heads and the other player tails. For more than two players you'd clearly need to work something else out - like coloured dice.

You can take a chance and buy this one for $18 on-line (hoping you'll like it) or try it out at home first for almost nothing. Take a regular chess/checkers board (ignore one row and one column) and add 48 square tiles with a half-dozen varieties of insignia.

I agree that games that you play should be bought-and-paid for. However, you can look at this list rather as ideas for ways of trying out a game before you buy it (and find you've wasted your $$$ - some of the Cheapass games I have bought get more play than the expensive boxed ones, for example). I, for one, would be quite happy to pay a nominal amount for the 'intellectual copyright' of a game, and be emailed a DIY kit (say in PDF form). I'd save shipping (very costly if you live overseas) and the games company would be saved printing & distribution costs. If I *did* decide I liked the game & wanted the nice shiny components then my IC cost could be offset against the total purchase price. But I guess this scheme may be too 'consumer oriented' and probably also too competitive for most...
