Welcome to the 2012 edition of the Thrift Find of the Week!

This is where the week's greatest thrift find is chosen, to be honoured by all thrifting Geeks. The Geek who found it also receives one shiny new GeekGold for their trouble. Brought to you by your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal:

The criteria for a winning find include (but are not limited to): the coolness of the find; how rarely it's thrifted; game rank; game cost; production value; general rarity; and whatever other whacked-out reasons the Secret Cabal decides to use. Each game mentioned is linked back to the original post on the thrifting list.

Feel free to add your comments, commendations, condemnations, etc. Also, be sure to subscribe to this list so you can be notified of the latest winner.

Want to check out previous lists? Just click on the year of your choice: 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 (part I), 2011 (part II).

A new year, a new FOTW list, another copy of Jati... What the...?

Welcome to a new list of the Thrift Finds of the Week! Your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal's first mission is to catch up to the present day and hopefully start turning out the winners in the week following their discovery. Until we catch up, we will continue with three postings a week. Believe us when we say, that going through the lists at this pace is exhausting beyond belief. But we have a responsibility to the thrifting community and we will persevere!

For now, let's turn our attention to the extraordinary finds during this first week of 2012. We begin with war games: Britannia for £1.50; Star Fleet Battles for $2; a party-unpunched Blackbeard for $4; Rise and Decline of the Third Reich for $1.40; Terrible Swift Sword: The Battle of Gettysburg for 90¢; and Storm over Arnhem for $2.

Moving right along, there were also delicious finds of Runebound for $1 (with the Island of Dread Expansion); Rail Baron for $2; Starship Catan for $3; two copies of Torres (one here for $1 and one here for €2); Mystery of the Abbey for $1; Dominion for $4 (cards were still in shrink); Amun-Re for $2.50; Tigris & Euphrates for $4; two copies of RoboRally (one here for $4 and one here also for $4); Clippers for €5; Small World for $2; Settlers of the Stone Age for $3; For Sale for $4; Heroscape (Valkyrie, Marvel, Marro, & Underdark) all for $3; Vegas Showdown for $5; and Eurorails for $1.69.

The most amazing tale of the week goes to fifisdead who found a remarkable price on Flash Point: Fire Rescue. You'll have to read his story to believe it.

Our runner-up this week was gamesgalore, who found an unpunched Dune for $4.

But our winner defied the odds and pulled out the craziest of all finds. Another past King of Thrifters has won the whole shebang: Thrift Find of the Week. Offer up your heartfelt congratulations to

This week is split down the middle -- that is to say, split between those terrific finds that we regularly see and those terrific finds that we haven't seen in a long, long time (if ever).

Up first, let's see what the so-called regulars were. There was Dixit in shrink for $6; The Pillars of the Earth for $5; Rail Baron for $5; Battlestar Galactica for $3; Betrayal at House on the Hill for $3; RoboRally for $1; Dominion: Intrigue for $4; Dominion: Alchemy for $3; Power Grid for $4; and Citadels (with the expansion) for $1.50. Those are the regular finds?!?!

And the irregulars? Well, they consisted of A Mighty Fortress for $3; Domaine for $2; The Battle of Roark's Drift and Napoleon at Leipzig for $3 total; Hansa Teutonica for $5; A Gleam of Bayonets: The Battle of Antietam for $3; Conquest for $3; and Aladdin's Dragons for $2.

Our runner-up this week is a rare and strange one, namely Odyssey, found by bobpony for $1.

And our winner is both highly regular and highly irregular. Regular, because Carcassonne is normally just too common a find to be a Thrift Find of the Week. And highly irregular (and winnable), because this week

Sometimes even the jaded countenances of your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal are bemused by the finds of the thrifting community. This week, the heavies were really ... umm ... heavy, man.

Look at this: two copies of Civilization (one here for $2 and one here for $6); two copies of Puerto Rico (one here for $3 and one here for $2); two copies of Nexus Ops (one here for $1 and one here for $1.30); and an exceptionally phallic copy of Dune for $3. All of these were previous winners, but we're giving them a rest this week.

You want wargames? Sure, we've got wargames! We've got Wooden Ships & Iron Men for $3; Ironclads for $2; and Up Front for $4.

Other finds were equally remarkable (and, in some cases, rare): Pandemic for $1.30; Formula D for $4; Coloretto for 49¢; Nottingham for $2; Broadsides and Boarding Parties for $5; Expedition (the English one) for $4; Dixit for $4; and Fist of Dragonstones for $2.

This week's runner-up is none other than our homeboy, stinkoman, for his terrific $1 purchase of the rare and pricey Groo: The Game.

And our winner is not an especially rare game, but a heretofore very rare thrift of a long out-of-print game. We award the Thrift Find of Week to

The Secret Cabal made a point of trying to find the last time a Steampunk game won the FOTW, but was unable to -- possibly due to the overwhelming smoke created from lighting our pipes with $100 bills (the mint juleps went down nicely though). Never mind. Steampunk fans, this is your week!

First things first. There is an unusually long list of games this week -- even by the standards of this crowd.

The very first item found this week was Niagara for $4. Followed by Zooloretto for $2; Empire Builder for $4; two copies of Rail Baron (one here for $4 and one here for £2); Winner's Circle for $1; Blackbeard for $2.50; Torres for $2.50; For Sale for $1; Power Grid for $2; RoboRally for $5; Race for the Galaxy for $4; and Dixit for $3.

Some extra-special items included Pueblo for $2; Mystery of the Abbey for $1.30; Broadsides and Boarding Parties for $4; Ambush for $4; TtR: Märklin Edition for $3; ANOTHER Carcassonne Big Box for $2.50 (what the ...?); Civilization for $2; Java for €3,50; Roads to Gettysburg for $3; and Elder Sign for $3.

Phew. Out of breath. Can we have another round of mint julep, please? Thanks.

Our second-place finisher, the runner-up, is a delightful rarity. We tip our hats to bk2020 who collected Divine Right for -- get this -- 35¢.

Drum roll please! The winner of the Thrift Find of the Week is as familiar a face as one will see on the thrifting lists. A previous King of Thrifters, a man for the ages, and an apparent Steampunk fan -- today we honour (again)

This week, it's all about the money. Normally, the Secret Cabal frowns upon deliberately mercenary thrifting. We control all of the world's banks and we do not care for such people. However, our winner is not normal and was not being a mercenary, he just had a good eye. Now where is our ice pick...

Another enormous list of beautiful finds. Among them: Through the Ages: The Bronze Age for $4; three copies of Hey, That's My Fish! (one here for $2 and one here for $4 and one here for $3); Puerto Rico for $4; Medici for $3; two copies of Civilization (one here for £2.50 and an unpunched one here for $3); two copies of Batavia for £2 each; Wooden Ships & Iron Men for $3; RoboRally for $3.50; Samurai Swords for $4; two copies of History of the World (one here for $4 and one here for £2.50); The Pillars of the Earth for $2; and Torres for $5.

In addition to those, we also had Starfarers of Catan for $4; a brand new Shadows over Camelot for $3; Tikal for £4; Fury of Dracula for $4; El Grande for $3; Ave Caesar for €2,50; Auf Achse for $2; Empires in Arms for $2; A Game of Thrones for $3; and Ambush! for $2.

A most unusual find for the Grognards is our runner-up, as Five Star Final found Here Come the Rebels for $4.

This week's winner of the Thrift Find of the Week purchased one of the most common board games around. Just about everyone has a copy of this game, but -- boy oh boy -- they certainly don't have this copy. After this experience, he can buy an in-shrink copy of Dune for himself (or maybe a couple).

Your friendly neighbourhood Secret Cabal is slightly late in getting this week's stuff listed, but we crave your indulgence: secretly running the world is very time consuming.

First of all, on the heels of the last week's Chess win, we want to give a very big shout-out to scoutmom for thrifting the most beautiful Cribbage board we have ever seen. You owe it to yourself to take a look.

The quality of Euro finds this week was breathtaking, but let's examine some other items first. There was Empire Builder for $2; Ricochet Robots for $3; Rail Baron for $3; Flat Top for $2; Fortress Europa for $3.50; Betrayal at House on the Hill for $1.50; Tales of the Arabian Nights for $4.50; Freedom in the Galaxy for $3; and Field Command for $3.

As mentioned, the spectacular Euros included Nottingham for $2; Tigris & Euphrates for $2; Snow Tails (with The Leap of Death expansion) for $3; Forbidden Island for 45¢; TtR: Europe for $5; two copies of Lost Cities (one here for $2 and one here for $3); Hey, That's My Fish! for $1; Power Grid for $2; New England for $4; Zooloretto for $2; China (in shrink) for $4; and Formula Dé for $2.

Our runner-up this week is a nostalgic choice and an unusual thrift. Cheers to dgpitts for his find of an original copy of The Republic of Rome for $3.

The winner of this week's Thrift Find of the Week is another Euro, a very rare thrift, and is from the same country (so-to-speak) as the runner-up. Congratulations to

Holy moley! This might be the longest list of top finds yet. An astonishing list of thirty-three drool-worthy thrifts. Let's have a look!

The first item on the thrift list is the first item here. We found San Juan for $2; Quebec 1759 for £3; Lost Cities for $4; Nexus Ops for 79¢; Before the Wind for $5; Ricochet Robots for £4; an unpunched Stone Age for $5; Pandemic for $3; Battle Line for $4; Arkham Horror for $2; Wyatt Earp for $2; Rail Baron for $2.50; Citadels for $5; San Marco for $4; two copies of Empire Builder (one here for $2 and one here for 63¢); and Hey, That's My Fish! for $1.

The more unusual or amazing finds included two copies of Alhambra (one here for $4 and one here $1); Mesopotamia for $8; Atlantis for $4; Empires in Arms for $2; D&D: Wrath of Ashardalon for $2; Railroad Tycoon for $2; Summoner Wars for $5; Power Grid for $5; two copies of Tikal (one here for $4 and one here for $4.50); Aladdin's Dragons for $3.50; Pergamon for $1; and Iron Dragon for $2.

The Secret Cabal is absolutely knackered after going through all of that. Drinks please. And we still have the best to come!

Our runner-up could easily have been our winner. Hats off to alfonzos for his superb $2 find of an unpunched, first-edition Civilization.

This week's winner is, again, just a bit anti-climactic, since everyone pegged right from the moment it was posted. Although, having said that, there were a couple of other challengers which were still pretty remarkable.

This was the week of very $$$valuable$$$ games, as you will see.

Tons and tons of great stuff this week, including Field Commander: Alexander for $1; Firepower for $1; Titan (unpunched) for $5; Terrible Swift Sword: The Battle of Gettysburg for $1; Aliens (unpunched) for $2; History of the World (in shrink) for $4; and Risk: 40th Anniversary Edition for $2.

Cleopatra and the Society of Architects for 50¢; 6 copies of Before the Wind for 90¢ each; two copies of Mystery of the Abbey (one here for $3 and one here for $1); Dixit for $3; Balloon Cup for $1; two copies of Roborally (one here for $3 and one here for $2); a decennial edition El Grande (in shrink) for $2; Puerto Rico for $2; Rum & Pirates for $3; Louis XIV for $1; Betrayal at House on the Hill for $3; Tikal for $2; Hare & Tortoise for $4; Arimaa for $2; 2 copies of the '99 edition of Acquire (one here for $3 and one here for $2); Gunslinger for $1.50; Dominion for $4; TtR: Europe for $4; and Hera & Zeus for $1.

Just pause for moment and think of the games just mentioned -- ALL of them are spectacular and NONE of them made it into the top three. The mind boggles!

Our bronze medalist this week was an extraordinary find: an unpunched copy of Risk: Black Ops for $4. Yowzers! Our silver medalist and runner-up this week is a game that we could never imagine finding at a thrift shop -- and yet, there it was: a complete copy of the Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition for $5. Absolutely astonishing.

Drum roll please! This week's winner of the Thrift Find of the Week is undoubtedly the most valuable (in cash) find ever mentioned on the thrifting lists. Our new best friend

No, wait. This week isn't really about the game you see to your left. Well, it is but it isn't. It is somewhat, but not entirely. Whatever. As usual, your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal will come back to that. For now, we give special kudos to Kilgore_Smores for reminding us of this:

Mädchen Amick was definitely delicious. She reminds me of that statue -- you know, the babe with no arms.

Ahem. Let's move on. By the standards of recent weeks, this was a bit slow -- but that's only a relative term. By 'slow', of course, we mean fairly spectacular.

There were quite a few titles that we don't see very often. For example, there was Château Roquefort for $3; Age of Empires III (we refuse to use the stupid other name) for $4; Mr. Jack for $2; Maharaja for $6; one of those stunning Ganine gothic Chess sets for $2; World of Warcraft: The Boardgame for $3; and Starship Catan for $2.

There was also Talisman (including The Adventure; Talisman Expansion Set; & Talisman Figures) for $2; Pandemic (in shrink) for $6; Dixit for $3; Dominion for $3; Dominion: Intrigue for $3; Ricochet Robots for $2; Lost Cities for $3; Jambo for $3; Battle Cry for $6; Torres for $3; Arkham Horror (including Dunwich Horror & Curse of the Dark Pharaoh) for $6; and Formula D for $2.

This week's runner-up is Gertz, who managed to snag K2 for $4.50. Nice.

The winner of the Thrift Find of the Week had one of those hauls that make Grognards weep and the rest of wish we were wargamers. This week, we stand on guard for

The weekly thrift lists are always full of great thrifting stories. We console ourselves with them when we are forced to wade through endless copies of Scrabble and Yahtzee and Uno et cetera. This week had many great stories to tell and saw a previous winner of this prestigious award return to the winner's circle.

March has come in like a lion; let's hope it doesn't go out like a lamb. Somehow, we don't think it will. Some of this week's finds included Cosmic Encounter for $4; Victory in the Pacific for $3; Caesar at Alesia for $3; Puerto Rico for $3; Pandemic (in shrink) for $4; Forbidden Island for $1; Betrayal at House on the Hill for $1.50; Storm over Arnhem for $2; Vegas Showdown for $3; two copies of Rail Baron (one here for 50¢ and one here for $4; Barbarossa for £3; and Ilium for $1.

Some more unusual finds included Hermagor for €5; Industria for $4; Divine Right for $2; Chaos in the Old World for $3; Starfarers of Catan for $2; Cleopatra and the Society of Architects for $3; Downtown: Air War Over Hanoi, 1965-1972 for $2; Saboteur for $3; Dungeons & Dragons: Castle Ravenloft for $1; Cutthroat Caverns for $1; Napoleon in Europe for $6; Magic Realm for $3; and Tales of the Arabian Nights for $2. There are some doozies in there.

Our runner-up this week is benevolentweasl, who stumbled upon a very peculiar item for $5. Yes, he found a copy of Cosmic Encounter signed by one of the co-designers, Peter Olotka. If the Secret Cabal's memory recalls correctly, Olotka was also involved with the design of Dune.

But, oh my goodness -- sacre bleu! The winner of the Thrift Find of the Week contest is no stranger to winning the Thrift Find of the Week contest: he has done so on FIVE previous occasions (and has also been nominated on countless occasions). We salute the most remarkable of Canadian thrifters

The Great BGG Blackout of 2012 even managed to affect the awesome powers of your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal as this week's winner was being posted last Friday right at the time that the blackout occurred. A few four-letter words nearly rose to our lips, but we managed to restrain ourselves before the vulgarities issued forth.

First of all, we wish to make special mention of bigthos (or, rather, his girlfriend) who managed to find a copy of the Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition for $7.50. Sadly, it was missing bits & pieces, but is worthy of mention nonetheless.

We wish to mention a certain disturbing trend that has attracted our notice. There are more and more finds on the weekly list (especially from VV) which have transcended the psychological thrift barrier of $5. It is not uncommon to see games at $5, $6, $7, and $8. Not good. Your thoughts on this are welcome.

What do we have this week? Well, we have Innovation for $5; two copies of Civilization (one here for $3 and one here for $7); Mordheim: City of the Damned for £3; Asara for $1; Balloon Cup for $2; Small World for $3; two copies of Zooloretto (one here for $2 and one here for $3); Mexica for $7; Wooden Ships & Iron Men for $1.50; I'm the Boss! for $1.50; A Game of Thrones for $7; Hybrid for $5; TtR: Europe for $2; Royal Palace for 49¢; Ubongo for $1; Dominion for $4; Before the Wind for $1.50; Betrayal at House on the Hill for $1; and the '99 Acquire for $1.50.

Our runner-up this week is a rarity for sure and we would happily award it second place for the title alone. It's not often that we see 122-year old games here, but we honour psycoiceman for finding An Account of Peter Coddle's Visit to New York for $8.

Ah, but the winner this week is all about the aesthetics. A game of great beauty. Congratulations and felicitations to

Ah, what's old is new again. We are yet reminded of the superb games (and winners) of old. Your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal wishes to apologize for the delays in posting new winners -- hopefully, the situation will improve shortly.

What a week! Let's have a look at the new and new-ish. We've got Key Harvest for £5; Coloretto for £2.50; Pirate's Cove in shrink for $6; We the People for $3; Manhattan for €4; Modern Art for £2; Zooloretto (with the expansion) for $4; Skyline 3000 in shrink for $4; Rune Age for $2; Dixit for $3; Formula D for $5; Ghost Stories for $3; and Citadels for $3.

And what's old? Two copies of Dark Tower (a somewhat broken one here for $7 and one with missing bits here for $5); Railway Rivals for $2; Empire Builder for $1.50; A House Divided for $1; Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective for $3; and Rise and Decline of the Third Reich for $2.

We've really felt our old age this week and it is reflected in our winner and runner-up. Our runner-up is, in fact, a previous winner and a magnificent game. Congratulations to ntar for having found Civilization for $4.

This isn't the first time that the following game has won Thrift Find of the Week and we confidently predict that it won't be the last. This isn't the first time that the following Geek has thrifted this game and we confidently predict that it won't be the last. Put your hands together for

Your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal won't lie to you: this was an immensely difficult week to judge. There are some super-terrific finds, but no epic, life-altering finds (i.e. no Jati or in-shrink Dune). So, to help us in our decision-making, and as we have just spent the last while ruling the tables at Monte Carlo, we opted to pick the winner randomly from a small list of finalists. Well, that and all the sangria was beginning to make us feel woozy.

Let's take a look at the goodies. First up, K2 for $1.50; Starship Catan for £1.50; Blue Moon for £1.50; two wonderful Heroscape hauls (one starting here for $35 and one starting here for $6.50); Gears of War: The Board Game for £5; Pirate's Cove for $2; Leonardo da Vinci for $4; Colossal Arena for $1; Risk: 40th Anniversary Collector's Edition for $3; Pandemic for $2.50; Formula Dé for $4; World of Warcraft: The Boardgame for $3; Empire Builder for $6; Mystery of the Abbey for $2; Quarriors! for $2; The Pillars of the Earth for $5; Domaine for €2; and Fjords for €0,50.

Our runner-up this week is Five Star Final for his tremendous find of Homesteaders for $3.

Apparently, you have to be good to be lucky and lucky to be good and our winner is both. This week's Thrift Find of the Week award goes across the pond to

We have said it many times before, but there are weeks that make you wonder and make your jaw drop. This is one of those weeks. There are so many good thrift finds this week, that it reminds all members of the Secret Cabal how pitiful their own board game collections are -- and how much more there is to be thrifted!

Right off the bat, we wish to give 'massive props' (whatever that means) to tacoma_boy, who pulled off the haul of the week. He nabbed 15 games for $90 off Craigslist, including such highlights as Hacienda, Taj Mahal, Samurai, Memoir '44, and a '99 Acquire. You can look at the whole thing, starting here. Moving on...

Holy guacamole! Look at all the stuff you guys found: Battle Line for $5; two copies of Zooloretto (one here for $2 and one here for $4); an SPI War of the Ring for $2; Tikal for £2; Dixit for £2; Lost Cities for $2; Eurorails for $2; Dominion for $5; The Civil War for $2; High Society for $1; Pirate's Cove for $3; Stone Age for $4; Saboteur for $3; I'm the Boss for $2; Squad Leader for $6; RoboRally for $1; Atlantis for $3; and Kingdoms for $8.

Even more exciting was Himalaya for €3.50; an in-shrink Puerto Rico for $2.50; Nefertiti for $2; Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective for $4; Across 5 Aprils for $1; Up Front for 75¢; and Thunderstone for $6.

Oh boy, our runner-up is really drool-worthy. Super-duper congratulations to Vormwald1 for finding the first edition of Twilight Imperium for $7. That is insane.

But hold on to your hats! More insanity is here. We are awarding the Thrift Find of the Week (and the requisite GeekGold in a Swiss bank account) to

Let's get something straight right off the bat, ok? One reason that the Secret Cabal's decisions are infallible and beyond reproach is that we are made to select ONE winner from thrift finds like the ones found this week. We have made many hyperbolic claims about the quality of the finds in the past, but if you take a look at what is below, we feel sure that you will agree that this week is truly special.

Before getting on, we wish to draw your attention to two excellent stories that occurred during this week. First, is the story about Green Ghost and, second, is the story about Ranger. Neither is a thrift find per se, but both are worthy of your attention.

Haul of the Week goes to derrickec because he thrifted (from one Goodwill) TtR: Europe, TtR: Märklin, Power Grid, and Alhambra for $4 apiece. Very nice.

Here are the 'ho-hum' games this week: Ghettopoly for $8; Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation (Deluxe Edition) for $5; an in-shrink Wings of War: Watch Your Back! for $6; an in-shrink Nexus Ops for $5; Puerto Rico for $5; Shadows over Camelot for $6; 1776 for $1; two copies of Small World (one here for $3 and one here for $2.50); and Ascension: Storm of Souls for $1.

Those, dear friends, were the 'dregs' of this week.

No doubt, you are now thinking, 'Ah, Solamnus's find of War of the Ring: Battles of the Third Age for $6 is clearly worthy of winning this week'. Yes, absolutely.
Or you are thinking, 'Surely 323studio's discovery of Dune for 50¢ is an obvious winner'. Yes, absolutely.
Or you are thinking, 'The choice for winner is easily Samort7's purchase of Civilization for $1'. Yes, absolutely.
Or you are thinking, 'But minionhunter's score of Dark Shadows for $3 is certainly good enough to win'. Yes, absolutely.
Or you are thinking, 'No question that k2outside's Assault on Mt. Everest for $1.25 is just too good not to win'. Yes, absolutely, but we are giving her the runner-up position (if for no other reason than a Geek with 'K2' in her name found a game about Mount Everest).

Frankly, your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal would have been happy to award the Thrift Find of the Week to any (or ALL) of the five aforementioned games -- especially Assault on Mt. Everest. But we have instead selected another game which is also stupidly rare and incredibly expensive. We tip our hat and bow deeply to

Evidently, this was the Week of Catan -- in more ways than one. To begin, there were as many as seven different copies of the Settlers of Catan thrifted this week. Your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal sent a bouquet of flowers to poor Herr Teuber on your behalf.

Lots of yummy goodies this week. We had Thebes for $3; British Rails for $2; Azhanti High Lightning for $7; I'm the Boss! for $2; High Society for $1; Junta for $2; Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective for $4; Pandemic (in shrink) for $2.50; Victory in the Pacific for $2; Arkham Horror for $3; Battle Cry for $2.50; Lost Cities for $3; two copies of Dominion (one here for $6 and one here for $2); Wings of War: Famous Aces for $3; San Juan for $2.50; Modern Art for $4; Power Grid for $2; and RoboRally for $3.

Your runner up this week is noloplain's discovery of Empires in Arms for $2. We understand that he should be finished setting up the game by Christmas and that his not-yet-conceived grandchildren will actually be finishing the game for him.

But, we return to the Week of Catan and our winner of the Thrift Find of the Week is a variant viewed by many as the most enjoyable from the Catan family -- it certainly is the most valuable. We congratulate and bestow accolades upon

This is another week of highly-unusual thrifts. Again, some games that have never been seen (or rarely been seen) on the weekly lists. Where on earth do you people find these games?

Your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal will, first off, give a big shout-out to Streaky for his haul of the week: a massive collection of Car Wars stuff for a mere $20. Uncle Albert would be proud.

This week we collectively managed to find Freight Train for 50¢; Lost Cities for $3; a '99 Acquire for $1.50; Runebound (with expansion) for $3; The Hanging Gardens for $5; a brand-new Puerto Rico for $3; Cosmic Encounter for $2; Junta for $2; The Russian Campaign for $2; Stone Age for $4; Dominion: Intrigue for $6; an unpunched Wooden Ships & Iron Men for $1; an unpunched Flat Top for $1; Circus Maximus for 50¢; Medici vs Strozzi for $3; and Roll Through the Ages for $2.

There was also Source of the Nile for $6; TtR: Switzerland for $4; Quebec 1759 for $5; Gheos for $4.50; A Game of Thrones: The Card Game for $3; Carcassonne: 10 Year Special Edition for €1,30; Duel of Ages Set 1: Worldspanner for $2; and (wtf?) two copies of Phalanx (one here for $2 and one here for $3) -- never having been seen before on the thrifting lists.

Runner-up was a tough choice, but it's got to be King Zombie's find of War of the Ring for £8. Really, really nice purchase.

The winner of the Thrift Find of the Week is not just a spectacular find in its own right, but is also a major grail item for 'certain' members of the Secret Cabal. We congratulate (and drool upon)

The pitchers of sangria have been arriving at an alarming rate for your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal. Indeed, we said to the serving wench that we wanted a pitcher of sangria every five minutes until someone passed out, and then every eight minutes after that. She gave us a look of pathos.

Another stunning week and we've had trouble sorting out the winners from the 'sub-winners' (so-to-speak). Let's be honest, the sangria hasn't helped. The sheer number of people thrifting now means that extraordinary finds are more numerous. There is a gigantic list of great thrifts this week.

Just look at this stuff: Ra for €1,50; Clans for €2; Factory Fun for €2,50; Modern Art for $2; Cosmic Encounter for $2; two copies of Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective (one here for $2 and one here for $4); Wasabi! for $3; Incan Gold for $2; Starship Catan for $3; Fjords for $1; Maori for $2; Manhattan for €0,50; Leonardo da Vinci for $3.50; Bang! for 50¢; A Game of Thrones: The Card Game for £5; RoboRally for $3; Wooden Ships & Iron Men for $1; Zooloretto for $3; The Werewolves of Miller's Hollow for $1; Civilization for $4; and Dixit for €2.

Incredibly, there were also three copies of Polarity (one here for $6 and one here for $1 and one here for $2); Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation for €1; Warrior Knights for $3; We the People for $1; Ice War for 50¢; Power Grid: Brazil/Spain & Portugal for $5; Empires of the Middle Ages for $2.50; and Heroquest (and the Barbarian Quest Pack) for a total of $4.

Haul of the week should probably go collectively to the Netherlands for their Queen's Day markets, but we're giving them the even-more-coveted runner-up position. Instead, haul of the week goes to RiffRaff14 for his $35 Heroscape treasure trove, which included: Rise of the Valkyrie, Road to the Forgotten Forest, Utgar's Rage, Malliddon's Prophecy, Jandar's Oath, Thora's Vengeance, Fields of Valor, Orm's Return, and Raknar's Vision. That's pretty special.

As mentioned, a fine gamer girl from Enschede, named Suzan, takes the runner-up prize with an extraordinary copy of Subbuteo for €0,50. FC Twente do well domestically, but not so well in the Champions League -- but look who's talking. whistle

How do we even begin to explain this week's winner of the Thrift Find of the Week? What can we say? Well, we can say that our winner

has been trying hard to win for ages and now he's finally done it. He managed to find (*deep breath*) more than 1,200 never-played NETRUNNER cards AND a sleeved deck AND the 1.0 and 2.1 Proteus cards AND an Endura Steel carrying case to hold his Netrunner goodness -- all for $15.

Wow. Just wow. Only the thrill of winning this award could be greater than that.

7 - 13 May 2012

At 10:15 on a Saturday night, whilst thrifting someone else's train, we began to think. Indeed, the second word in the title of today's runner-up made your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal think about who might captain such a fleet. How about:

As far as thrifting is concerned: we must fight this sickness; find a cure. On a somewhat related note, a copy of Dark Shadows was thrifted again this week. It was free. This makes it a superb find, but ineligible for the award bestowed by your present interlocutors.

Anyway, there is (again) so much good stuff this week that it is difficult to maintain any sense of decorum whilst picking winners. We are plagued by a disordered desire to acquire more and more games.

Look at this: Civilization for €2; Doom: The Boardgame for $4.50; Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game for $3; Memoir '44 for $5; Torres for $4; Darjeeling for $4; Dungeon Twister for $5; Puerto Rico (in shrink) for $4; Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers for $1; a '99 Acquire for $4; Formula Dé for $4; and Starship Catan for $2.

Then there were two copies of RoboRally (one here for $3 and one here for $2); 1830: Railways & Robber Barons for $5; Blox (in shrink) for $5; Alhambra for $2; Ricochet Robots for $3; Hoity Toity for $2; A House Divided for 50¢; Thurn & Taxis for $2; WildLife for $3; two copies of Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective (one here for $2 and one here for $4); and Ogre for $1.

Is it any wonder why we no longer sleep or eat? Or why we keep drinking sangria at an alarming rate?

Anyway, our runner-up is an epic find and was a hair's breadth from winning the whole shebang. Top marks to Stu Skywalker for finding a complete wow copy of Battlefleet Gothic for $3. Superb -- really superb.

The winner of the highly-esteemed Thrift Find of the Week is an odd one. It's such an extraordinary find that it needs to be recognized, but it was actually found in the previous week and listed this week. Whatever. Ladies and gentlemen, please: an overwhelming deluge of applause and congratulations to

Good day to you all. My name is Felicity Pinfield-Hawkes and I am the secretary to what has come to be known, in common parlance, as the Secret Cabal.

I have been asked to communicate the apologies of the Cabal for their inability to be present for today's award. Sadly, one member was recently discovered to be a lizard -- and he was immediately expelled. If you see him, do not engage him in any way. He looks like this:

Due to the stress of the situation, the remaining members have taken a well-deserved break and are drinking themselves into a stupor resting comfortably. It falls to me to provide you with the information which they sent to me by telex this morning.

Games of note this week: Torres for €4; Rail Baron for $2; World in Flames for $3; Race for the Galaxy for $3; Mission: Red Planet for $4; two copies of Web of Power (one here for $5 and one here for $4); Titan for $3; Key Harvest for $3; Zooloretto for $2.25; Evo for $3; Nuns on the Run for $2; Masons for $2; Bootleggers for $3; Settlers of Canaan for $2; Puerto Rico for $3; Thurn and Taxis: All Roads Lead to Rome for $2; O Zoo le Mio for $2; Tobago for $4; Java for $2; Civilization for $3; and Gulo Gulo for £3.

There was a tie for the runner-up position this week: both DarkCelt's Groo: The Game for $2 and kabonk's unpunched, first-edition copy of Jack the Ripper for 25¢.

The winner of the Thrift Find of the Week really should win Story of the Week for the remarkable tale of a yard sale -- but what a yard sale! He should be smacked for not asking for an autograph, but, nonetheless, we happily congratulate

Well, it is nice to be back. Your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal has missed you all and would kiss you all if we could. kiss We are pleased that Felicity was able to handle matters adequately for the previous week's winner.

As for this week -- what on earth happened? No Puerto Rico, no Civilization, no Dune, no Jati even? We feel a bit woozy. Are there are no runaway winners this week? Nonsense! There are plenty of good things to raise our spirits.

There were a couple of notable hauls this week, but Haul of the Week goes to lonnie913, who found four Qwirkles; five Ticket to Rides; three 10 Days in the Americas; and two 10 Days in Africas -- for $4 apiece. Impressive.

We collectively found Settlers of America: Trails to Rails for $3; Niagara for $4; The Civil War for $1; Vegas Showdown for $3; Ricochet Robots for $4; Kahuna for €3; Coloretto for $2; Empire Builder for $2; Cosmic Encounter for $2; TtR: Europe for $5; RoboRally for $1.75; Formula Dé for $4; and Incan Gold for $2.50.

Even more special was Modern Art in shrink for $1; an unpunched Tikal for $2; Eurorails for $5; Mr. Jack (and the Extension) for $2; Gulo Gulo for $2; an in-shrink 1976 Acquire for $7; The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game (with all the cards sleeved, no less) for $2.75; Primordial Soup for $2; and Perry Rhodan: The Cosmic League for $4.

Runner-up spot goes to Hiddnfox. He snagged a nice haul of Avalon Hill games, but he is specifically awarded the silver medal for his lovely and quite rare discovery of Source of the Nile for a mere $2. Great find.

The game that wins this week also took top spot only a few short weeks ago, but it was decided that its gravitas is just too strong to ignore. Top spot and the requisite GeekGold goes to

for his Craigslist discovery of the STARFARERS OF CATAN (AND THE 5-6 PLAYER EXPANSION). This epic haul also included such things as El Grande, the El Grande Expansions, Lost Cities, etc. All eight items for $50 works out to $6.25 per item. What a deal! Congratulations Kevin!

Wowee kazowee! What a big list: one of longest lists of honourable mentions in FOTW history. This is a 'legendary' week to be sure. More about that later.

Your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal has had all eyes fixed to Euro football and thrifters have apparently had their eyes fixed on Euros of another kind. Let's have a look.

This is another of those occasions where the quality of the finds is almost too good to believe. Several games could easily have won FOTW. How on earth we ever decided on anything is unknown to me. Once again, we can barely breathe and barely contain our excitement over the rich vein of finds.

To wit: two different Ganine chess sets (a Conqueror set for $3 and a Gothic Cavalier set for $6); The Awful Green Things From Outer Space (unpunched) for $2; an Eon Cosmic Encounter for $3; Tyranno Ex for $3; RoboRally (in shrink) for $4; Daytona 500 for $4; Ta Yü for €1,50; Wings of War: The Dawn of World War II for $4; Rise and Decline of the Third Reich for $3; Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective for $2; Circus Maximus for $5; BattleLore (in shrink) for $4; Memoir '44 for $3; Talisman (with the Talisman Expansion Set and The Talisman Dungeon) for $5; Broadsides and Boarding Parties for $8; and War of the Ring for 50¢.

In honour of Euro 2012, we happily list some Euros separately: Endeavor for $4; two copies of Pandemic (one here for $2 and one here for $6); Tikal for $6; Alhambra for €3; Hoity Toity for €2; La Città for €5; Coloretto for $2; Perry Rhodan: The Cosmic League for $6; Dixit for $2; Jambo (in shrink) for $3; Puerto Rico for $6; A Castle for All Seasons for $5; The Mississippi Queen for €4; Thurn & Taxis for €5; and Red November for $2

Our runner-up is not a Euro, but a spectacular thrift nonetheless. We bow before Eggduck and honour his discovery of a German copy of Civilization AND the Western Extension Map for a grand total of €5.

However, the winner of the Thrift Find of the Week is (unsurprisingly) a Euro, but it's a Euro and then some. Yikes. We are in awe of the haul collected by a relatively new thrifter:

This fellow collected AGRICOLA AND The Legen*dairy Forest-Deck AND the Agricola Ö-Deck for $3 total. But that's not all! In this same haul, he also grabbed Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation for $3 AND ATTIKA for $3 AND Ricochet Robots for $3.

Stunning! How 'bout a trade?

4 - 10 June 2012

We return with yet another astonishing collection of games thrifted from around the world. Your friendly neighbourhood Secret Cabal is more than happy to pass on these finds to you -- if only we could do it for real.

This week, we wish to draw special attention to the AH 1999 large box of Diplomacy. Why? Because there were three thrifted this week: one here for $3; one here for $5; and one here for $4. We happily tip our hats to you!

There were quite a few duplicates this week two too. Amongst them: two copies of Dominion (one here for $7 and one here for $4); two copies of Formula Dé (one here for $4 and one here for $8 -- but it also had the Montréal expansion); two copies of Pandemic (one here for $6 and one here for $5); and two copies of Ticket to Ride: Märklin Edition (one here for $4 and one here for $5).

On to the rest -- and, boy, were there some doozies this week! Dust for $9; Squad Leader for $3; The Defense of Rorke's Drift for £2.50; The Battle of the Little Big Horn for £2; Citadels for $2; a '99 Acquire for $3; Through the Desert for $4; Trias for $1; Zendo for $4; Gulo Gulo for $2; Forbidden Island for $2; A Game of Thrones for $7; Daytona 500 for $4; Machiavelli for $2; Battlestar Galactica for $3; The Settlers of the Stone Age for $1; AND 1830: Railways & Robber Barons for $1. Zoinks!

It was a tough climb to the top of the heap this week, but we're giving the bronze medal to fellonmyhead for his truly stunning find of a first edition Cosmic Encounter for £2.50.

The rarest find of the week is a game that has never been listed on the thrift lists. The silver medal and runner-up trophy go to Kavu and his magnificent thrift of Atlantic Storm for $3. We are green with envy. This game could and should have won.

But we cannot overlook one last find. This week, the most esteemed award of Thrift Find of the Week remains in Canada. We are truly mouth-agape and in awe of

for his double find of CIVILIZATION and ADVANCED CIVILIZATION for $3 apiece -- side-by-each on the shelf. *Phew*. There are no words. This is more than enough to make a grown man cry. cry

Your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal is pleased to reprise some text from a FOTW of last year. Once again, this week is the "Noah's Ark" version of the Thrift Find of the Week. A reading from the Book of Genesis:

And of board games clean and unclean, and of every thrifty find that moveth upon the earth, two and two went in to Noah into the ark, Euro and Ameritrash, as the Lord had commanded Noah. And after the seven days were passed, the waters of the flood overflowed Goodwill and Value Village.

Two copies of Battlestar Galactica: one here for $2 and one here for $5.
Two copies of a Ganine Chess set: one here for $3 and one here for $5.
Two copies of Betrayal at House on the Hill: one here for $4.50 and one here for $2.
Two copies of Dixit: one here for $3 and one here for $3.
Two copies of RoboRally: one here for $2 and one here for $4.
Two copies of Civilization: an Avalon Hill one here for €0,50 and a Sid Meier one here for $2.

Haul of the week definitely goes to Meeples Schmeeples for grabbing the following Heroscape goodies: Rise of the Valkyrie; two Volcarren Wastelands; Thaelenk Tundra; Marvel: the Conflict Begins; Road to the Forgetten Forest; Fortress of the Archkyrie; Three Flagbearers: Acolarh, Ornak, and Laglor; Orm's Return; Raknar's Vision; all 22 Utgar's Rage figures; all 25 Mallidon's Prophecy figures; and all 26 Thora's Vengence figures. This rang in at $24. Wow.

And now, a gargantuan list of games. Really ridiculous. There's Mississippi Queen for $1; Settlers of America: Trails to Rails for $4; War Machine for $2; Merchants of Amsterdam for $1; 1776 for $2; Naval War for $1; Metropolys for $2; Puerto Rico for $4.50; Escape from Colditz for £3; Empire Builder for $2; Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation for $2; Victory in the Pacific for 50¢; Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective for $5; Mexica for $3; Blue Moon (with the Mimix & Terrah expansions) for £1; Dominion for $4; Hoity Toity for $5; Tower of Babel for $3; Modern Art for $5; Wasabi! for $4; Formula Dé for $4; Eurorails for $3; Star Fleet Battles for $2; Vegas Showdown for $4; a '99 Acquire for $3; Entdecker for $2.50; and Battle Cry for $2.

Normally, $10 for one game is too expensive to mention here, but when it happens to be Merchant of Venus, we will make an exception!

Our runner-up this week is a stranger to no-one who frequents the thrift lists. We happily and without hesitation commend belial1134 for finding Europa Universalis for $6. Enjoy those 21,000 hours minutes of play time.

In the end, it is the same game that wins two weeks in a row, but not the same thrifter -- though he needs no introduction either. Of course, we speak of the highly regarded winner of the Thrift Find of the Week:

Rob Rob

who seems to have continued the two-by-two theme of Noah by thrifting an in-shrink wowgooblush copy of ADVANCED CIVILIZATION for $3. We hope you don't mind us saying this Rob -- you know we love you, but that is crazy.

And God said to Noah: This shall be the sign of the covenant which I have established between me and all thrifters of board games upon the earth.

Amen.

I will take this opportunity to remind you that it is your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal that controls the British crown; that keeps the metric system down; that keeps Atlantis off the maps; that keeps the Martians under wraps; et cetera et cetera et cetera.

What is old is new again! Yet another week where both the thrifter and the thrifted game are blasts from the past. We begin, however, with some hauls of note. In fact, apparently hauls must be all the rage on the catwalks of Paris, since there were several hauls of note this week. Some of the best are mentioned below.

We would be remiss if we did not draw attention to lostdog's haul of Warhammer 40,000 stuff. And it is definitely worth mentioning stinkoman's booty, which included Knightmare Chess; Manhattan; Race for the Galaxy; and Ra: The Dice Game; amongst others (all for $1.25 to $2 each). We can also mention the loot that WesSed brought in: LotR; Nightfall; Battle Cry; Hera & Zeus; Perry Rhodan: The Cosmic League; and a few others (all for $3 to $5 each).

However, we assign Haul of the Week to chrisdr for raking in Talisman (fourth edition); Runebound (second edition); Tigris & Euphrates; Bios: Megafauna; a '99 big box Diplomacy; and a couple of others -- all for $3 to $4 apiece. Well done, Chris!

There were other hauls, but we're going to leave it at that for now.

Meanwhile, we had The Magic Labyrinth for $2; Hera & Zeus for $2; Summer Storm: The Battle of Gettysburg for $3; Junta for $3; Britannia for £2.50; Mexica for $8; Tigris & Euphrates for $2; Tikal for $4; two copies of Alhambra (one here for $3 and one here for 99¢); 1830: Railways & Robber Barons for $1.50; Wooden Ships & Iron Men for $3; Betrayal at House on the Hill for $3; RoboRally for $3; Dixit for $2; two copies of Rail Baron (one here for $3 and one here for $4.50; Across 5 Aprils for 99¢; Tide of Iron for $7; Space Crusade for €0,75; Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation for €0,75; and Pandemic for $3.

There was a superb find by yet another gentleman who is no stranger to the thrifting lists -- and his find nets him the Silver Medal and runner-up position this week. Helmets off to artfuldodge2 for his outstanding find of unpunched copies of Beyond Valor: ASL Module 1 and Paratrooper - ASL Module 2 for a grand total of $2.

We freely acknowledge that there were two copies of the winning game this week. However, the second copy (here), at a price of $2, was twice as expensive as the winning copy (it was also missing a couple of bits). While we commiserate with him, we simultaneously bestow our munificent acolades to

for his gobsmacking find of MAGIC REALM -- complete -- for $1. That's one single, stupid, solitary dollar! Absolutely amazing. Congratulations Matt, you have just won the Thrift Find of the Week award. Again.
