Well four days into the new year and it was time to place an order. Good thing I didn't make any New Year resolutions like cutting back on boardgame purchases.whistle

Like last year, I'm keeping track of my acquisitions from the start of the year rather than the end of it. For those keeping similar geeklists, I recommend it as the way to go if only as a better way to archive your acquisitions as they occur. Feel free to thumb anything you think was a worthy acquisition. It helps validate my gaming impulses. And be sure to subscribe if you want to keep up with my "cult of the new" game gains. There always seems to be something to interest everyone, including wargamers (my acquisitions last year included about 30 of those), Euro fanatics, Ameritrashers, and even some miniature pushers.

One of the things I've done this year was add both the purchase price and location where I got the game. It helps me realize the sticker shock at the end of the year for game purchases. But then again, this is my hobby much like someone might be into classic cars, private aircraft flying, or antique collecting so I don't feel so bad about my addiction.

Last year was another great year with great games. Here's that year's list which pretty much has anything new I got up through the release of Eclipse.

My 2011 Game Gains (or The Boardgaming Money Pit)

Autumnweave, my arch nemesis local game collecting rival, has finally posted his 2012 acquisitions list here:

2012 game purchases for Autumnweave

Ah yes, and where to all these games go? To the Bunker of course:

The ULTIMATE game storage solution. Or, 20 steps to making a dream come true.

FINAL EDIT: My 2013 acquisition list is now posted:

Boardgame Bunker Baubles - My 2013 game acquisitions

I have Giganten. I like it. This version by FFG supports five players with a few improved rule tweaks (Gig was a a 4-player game). Cardhaus had it on sale for $23 which was too good to pass on for this version.

Ouch! After looking long and hard at this one I finally took the plunge. And if you want it, you get it only from the Lost Battalion Games website, so if you want to know the price, go there and check it out. Not for the feint of wallet. The game however is fascinating. Check out all the web videos and you'll agree (assuming you're into miniatures). What really grabbed me with this is the card driven story and how it feels like a board game as much as a miniatures game. From all accounts, the minis are some of the best painted out there and I like the unique attributes of each soldier within the frame of the game. Probably not the game to get if you're looking for a lot of realism and details but that's another beauty of the game that hooked me was its simplicity. No massive miniature rules book to thumb through. All the information is right on the cards and map to play.

And of course, based on many sound recommendations, I got this along with the base game. And a few extra squad units with leaders. The map components are incredibly tough and very nice graphically. With this expansion, you get to create some monster maps more suitable to MG teams you might have in your mix, not to mention the additional scenarios. Playing with a few (up to 4) units in the base game seemed fun but with this expansion, the system allows for more breathing room when playing with a squad of 5-10 units. Again, if you want to know how much this game costs, check out their website. Actually when I compare it to other recent wargame releases the price point isn't too bad given the quality of components and overall quality of the game. Time to stop watching this being played and start directing my own squads into battle.

Picked up a "full set" of Surface Action at CSI for $121 (that was with my discount and a gift certificate I had). It was just easier to go all in and get a complete set. I'm sure to order a case separately at some point just to flush out the commons a bit more.

Overall, I think this series is spent. Sure they could keep throwing out a few new ships for minor nations and a few new capabilities but overall, with the set pretty much everything you'll ever need is released. I didn't like the fact that they reissued the Bismark as a Rheinubung version and the Yamato is black based on the dark powder coating they gave it for night Sho-go ops at Leyte. Those and the Swordfish, lend lease Hurricanes and Ace Zeros just show they're running out of steam. Top that off with the fact that the fan and tournament base for this is waning and not bringing in any new players and you've got a dead product. I'd probably keep getting it since I'm in over my head and I do like the minis overall. Still, I'm hoping this release is the end of the series.

So what do I like in the set:
- a few more named carriers for the US and Japan are released
- FW190's
- LST's
- Elektro U-boat
- Japanese landing craft
- Wasp

A thrift purchase at Guardian Games for $4. I'll add it to my racing games collection but don't think it will crack my top 10 (see Zoom into My Top 10 Favorite Auto Racing Games) It's a nice retro purchase and this one has the 1980 racers. A few of the ones I recognized are Al and Bobby Unser, Mario Andretti, and Ricky Mears. Plus it was complete and in pretty good condition.

Sometimes you pass on deals and kick yourself years later, like when I passed on Devil's Cauldron for $130 and now it goes for $300+ for a copy on ebay. Well I've had an interest in this one and really like the DVG solo games. Guardian had a story copy they let go so I got it for $52 in near mint and as a bonus it had three mini Plano boxes that sorted out the aircraft, weapons, and enemy chits. A deal too good to pass on for this one. I really like the modern day armament choices. Plus there's lots of shit-hole places I'd love to see bombed off the face of the planet anyway in the mission scenarios. Couple that with a great price and it's a win/win acquisition.

FWIW, they're going to reprint this one and it will be available again around June 2012 or so.

I finally took the plunge and got this. It has a level of luck and chaos I like when I want to get away from heavy Euro games where you can calculate points and outcomes to the nth degree. Somewhere in a BGG promo order I also got the The King at Essen promo card as well. Got it in a Miniatures Market order for $37.

Wanted to get this at Essen last year but couldn't justify the price. CSI threw it out there this week at $34.99 which is an excellent deal so I caved. Sure it's glorified Clue but it has interesting mechanisms and great steampunk theme, not to mention the cool gears of time on the board.

Finally released by FFG, this one rounds out the Matriarchy with a few troops to make a good team with. Got it in my CSI order for $12.50. Sure it's a miniatures game on a board but I'm glad that FFG followed through with continued support for this one. It's probably not even close to being a big seller for them so it's nice to see them supporting it regardless.

I honestly must admit I didn't have high expectations for this game when it was first announced. Oh boy, another CMG on air combat. How good can it really be? Well, as a tactical air combat minis game it handles critical items such as speed and altitude very well, though abstracted. Performance will depend on both the aircraft and the quality of the pilot flying it. I like the way that better pilots gain an edge over less experienced ones and also the way that hits damage your ability to fly and fight. The extra abilities on the aircraft are nice fluff typical to the AA:M genre and the game uses a point system familiar to all those who have played AA:M games. Combat damage is handled very similar to AA: Naval Miniatures where exceeding vital armor will result in an instant kill. There's also a lot of nice options that add more detail to the game play without over complicating things for a minis game. The models are very good with a few minor detail omissions but very little bending if any (I haven't seen any on mine yet). At 1/100 scale they're a pretty good size to move and play with. My biggest complaint is that the map hexes are way too big for the game though the rules take this into account and allow for progressive repositioning to stay on the maps. If you have any of the AA:M revised maps, they work great for playing as they're perfect in hex size (the original AA:M map hexes are too small for the bases of these aircraft). So overall, I'm pretty impressed given that I had no hopes for this game at all. Finally, the mix in the initial set is good given they stuck to 1939-1941 for most of the aircraft and went with the more commonly produced models for the nations included. It's not a problem playing with multiples of the same aircraft on one team and one of the best decisions I've seen was inclusion of all the cards from this set in the starter. With the cards, you could even use aircraft from other games and it won't affect play.

I'm not seeing a lot of downside to the game since most dogfights will probably involve 2-4 aircraft per side. You'll be able to field a few good aircraft for say Expeditionary Italians against the Russians without the sky turning into a kaleidoscope of different nations and colors. The good mix of aircraft will allow you to fight battles over Russia, the Pacific and Far East, and of course the skies over Britain. All good stuff and good fun.

The starter comes with 2 Hurricanes, 1 Spit, 2 Me109's and 1 Me110, which is plenty to play a fun Battle of Britain scenario.

Another one that looked really interesting at Essen last year. It's finally out now and I was initially hesitant to get it based on some comments regarding replay ability. However, the theme is really appealing and I like the mechanism of sending out spies to mess with your opponents. Gamesurplus had it for $32.50.

Not sure how good it is, but I got The Manhattan Project: Nations Expansion as well.

I've been wanting this one since the initial pre-pub announcement. It's CDG akin to Hannibal but playable with 4. Gamesurplus not only has them but at one of the best prices around at $44.50. I think that's even cheaper than the pre-pub price from Compass Games. FYI, it's a paper map which was expected, like their other games of this type.

Had to do a game swap in an order so got this preorder item instead. Got it from a new place for me called Sci-Fi City games for $30. I would have gotten it eventually anyway given I've got every thing Thunderstone.

EDIT: 12/11/12 Got the Thunderstone Advance: Root of Corruption expansion from MM for $26. See Dan, this is what I'm talking about. It's all cardboard crack and like Pokemon, "you gotta catch em all". Still, this one has new rules for co-op play adding a whole new dimension to the game.

And finally, this expansion from CSI $10. Gotta keep the Space Marines in top shape. Hulk busting can make you soft.

Got this along with a few extra Airplane Packs. At least all the aircraft in this release are different than the initial release set. CSI has the box for $45 and the extra planes for $8.50. I'm really into the Axis & Allies Air Force Miniatures: Angels 20 right now but these planes really shine with their detail and paint jobs. Also the mechanics of this game are different enough to warrant having both if you like air combat games. Still, my preference is for the WWI planes but I like this set as well.

So CSI finally got this expansion in as well for $9.95 and I used it to round out some free shipping. I've heard good things about these guys so it's time for new blood to enter the Hulk.

This one is getting too many rave reviews to ignore. D&D them with Euro game mechanics and meeples. I've really liked what I've read so far and it's an easy decision to get given the fantasy theme. CSI purchase for $32.50.
