Continuing the Dwarrowdelf quests...Celeborn, Galadriel and Haldir escorted Arwen across the Redhorn Gate so she could visit her father. Man, that was a LOT of effort for a family visit. It took a small horde of Silvans to quest my way through that one. Haldir had a Freezing Cold condition attached to him for most of the game, then the Dimrill Stair came up *just* before I was about to quest through to 3A/B. Henamarth single-handedly saved Haldir from death. Henamarth scried Dimrill Stair and I read the Travel text which made me think that perhaps it would be important in the last stage of the quest to not have this condition attached to Haldir? Good guess. I quested even, traveled to the Dimrill Stair, ditched Freezing Cold, then powered through on the next turn to 3A/B. 3B forces you to discard any character with a willpower of 0....Haldir's willpower is 2 and Freezing Cold reduces a hero's willpower by 2, so Haldir would've been toast. We love you Henamarth, even if you *are* a Fantasy Flight creation.

I definitely need to play this one again with my Dwarf deck. And again, Nightmare mode.

The Redhorn Gate

A pick up and deliver mission for our elven lord? Sounds simple! So, with Arwen in tow, the elves take off over the Misty Mountains this time...

sideboard in:
none
sideboard out:
none

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Turn 1 (18 threat - 0 progress)
Beginning their initial ascent into the foothills of the mountains, the peaks of Caradhras and Celebdil loom large in the distance. Employing a Stargazer from Rivendell to assist on the preparation for the trip, and packing Asfaloth to the full, our heroes set off.
(+1 progress)

A Mountain Goblin, equally ugly and vile to its cave-dwelling kin, can be seen tracking the party from afar.

Turn 2 (20t - 1p)
A Zigil Miner joins the group as well as the ever-plucky Gleowine. Come on, it's a rarely-seen harp reference/pun! Anyways, Elrond Risks Some Light and finds out that the party is in store for some perilous pathways and fearsome creatures ahead. A sinister chill hits Glorfindel; he is Freezing Cold!
(-5p, +5t)

Catching Elrond deep in thought, the Mountain Goblin sneaks up and lands a crippling, unblockable attack on the elf. His back nearly torn to shreds, Elrond cries out for help. Glorfindel rushes to his aid, and together they manage to bring down the dastardly foe.

Turn 3 (26t - 1p)
Despite not having made it very far up the mountain thus far, Glorfindel and his trusty steed have been systematically exploring Celebdil and have almost covered that entire peak, saving the rest of the group the trip there. The group meets up with a Northern Tracker and a Warden of Healing before heading back out for another length hike. Elrond, his clothes still drenched in blood, is understandably excited to have an expert Healer nearby.
(+1p)

Having only just disposed of the Mountain Goblin, and still with wounds still freshly steaming in the winter air, Elrond comes across a recent set of tracks distinctive to a Mountain Warg; very recent tracks.

Turn 4 (27t - 2p)
Knowing that a Mountain Warg attack is imminent, Elrond puts on Vilya and summons forth Gildor from a nearby forest! The mountain-trekking party is really growing in size; hopefully they'll not attract any additional unwanted attention on their passage.
(-1p, +1t)

Coming to a good viewpoint, the heroes see that not one, but two Mountain Wargs now circle the group, looking eager to pounce on their prey. One of the Wargs lays back while the second jumps in at the group, tearing at Gleowine's face. Poor Gleowine. Glorfindel only manages to get in a glancing blow before the Warg momentarily retreats.

Turn 5 (29t - 2p)
Facing down a fanged doom, Elrond digs deep within his satchel, finds his Tony Robbins books, and is immediately overwhelmed by a double-dose of Unexpected Courage! Well, let's be honest, with Tony Robbins, it was hardly unexpected. Not only that, but an admittedly-pretty-grim-looking Gleowine gets up off the turf, puts his face back on, and rejoins the group. With a new outlook on their predicament, Elrond yells encouragement to the troops. The clouds part and the Dimrill Stair can be seen far off into the distance.
(+1p)

Snapping back to reality, the Gleowine-maiming Warg takes another run at our group. The Mountain Warg rips at Elronds shoulder, tearing both clothes and flesh; however, the masterful Warden of Healing wraps lacerations as fast as they are caused. The Northern Tracker puts down his walking stick long enough to assist Glorfindel in skewering and barbecuing the first Warg. The second Warg looks on in silent horror, perhaps reconsidering any future aggression.

Turn 6 (30t - 3p)
With the power of Vilya anything's possible, even getting Beorn out of the forest long enough to help with our heroes' trek up the mountains! Risking a little Light, Elrond manages to plot a course further up to the peaks without running afoul of any Snow Wargs. Snow Wargs make Mountain Wargs look like Teddy-Bear Wargs. Even though the new path brings the group to the edge of some Turbulent Waters, Asfaloth is able to ferry the party across with little ill-effect.
(+4p)

Mountain Wargs are like goldfish in that they have very short memories. With the BBQ sauce still encrusted on Glorfindel's statuesque face, the second Warg lunges itself into the midst of our group. Elrond, once again getting mauled, is now in clothing so tattered that, quite frankly, it's become obscene. Blushing, the Warden continues his now-awkward administrations. With hands half-way obscuring their eyes, Beorn and Glorfindel butcher up the second Warg and begin smoking the meat for their journey ahead. Insert smoking-meat-Elrond-nearly-naked joke here.

Turn 7 (31t - 7p)
Warg jerky in hand, the elven band sets back up the mountain. The smell of fresh meat attracts a group of Black Uruks; they immediately set upon our rather-unimpressed, Beorn-toting group.
(+4p, complete stage 1)

Inexplicably, the Uruks close in on Elrond, further slashing any remaining clothes he has to ribbons. The Warden, now wishing he were dead, quickly wraps Elrond just enough to keep the show's PG13 rating; this is not Game of Thrones after all. Glorfindel and Beorn dispatch the Uruks with their trademark skill and panache.

Turn 8 (32t - 0p)
Wielding the power of Vilya, and literally nothing else, Elrond summons a second, startled Northern Tracker to the scene. The two trackers share a knowing glance, shake their heads, and gear up to attempt an ascension on the summit of Caradhras. Crazy, under-dressed, hippie elves...
(+13p, complete stage 2)

Plodding along, our group is startled by a sudden stirring on either side; an Avalanche! Pushed on by the imminent danger, our group hits the peak of Caradhras! Okay, so the best way to motivate this group of heroes is to be chased by an Avalanche. Noted. Shivering upon the Mountain's Peaks, the Stargazer succumbs to a chilly death.

Turn 9 (33t - 0p)
After burying the hapless Stargazer at the very peak of Caradhras, the group begins their rapid descent down the western side of the mountain range.
(+5p)

Though no enemies appear anywhere on the horizon, our group is beset by a unnaturally powerful Snowstorm. Being so ill-equipped for the cold, Elrond has the entire group huddle awkwardly close to him to provide enough body heat to survive the night. The tension becomes too much for Gleowine and the poor mentally-abused Warden; they scream and run off wildly into the vast and deadly darkness.

Turn 10 (34t - 5p)
Before making the push down the final few thousand feet, Glorfindel finds that the Power of Orthanc brand sleeping bag that Gleowine left behind finally gets rid of the Freezing Cold that has been gripping his bones since the outset of the journey. Feeling good and thoroughly alive for the first time all trip, Glorfindel gets out of the sleeping bag and is immediately Freezing Cold again. Oh well, cold or not, the group makes it through the final leg of their quest up and over the mountains.
(+9p, complete stage 3)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Knowing the deck and quest cards ahead of time can alleviate a ton of trouble before it even shows up (which is why I never look at them ahead of time when playing for the very first time). However, for this run-through, and already knowing the quest progression here, I was able to find and get through the tough locations earlier and stall my progress enough to get "in control" of the situation before getting to quest stage 3. Also, it should be noted that not side-boarding out Arwen from my deck was pretty silly; I'm glad it didn't come back to bite me in the end.

Final Score

= 34 + 0 + 0 - 6
= 28

The Redhorn Gate - The first Adventure in the Dwarrowdelf Cycle

Difficulty Level = 6

Adventure Notes -

This is a fairly straight forward Adventure. Except everything is slightly more difficult. The Enemies are fairly nasty though. The Treachery cards are downright vicious. And the Locations are rough.

The Encounter deck has a method of bringing back into the play the worst cards from the discard pile that you have already faced. That means you may face the same card several times.

Added to that to Quest can only be completed by exploring certain Locations which you must find in the Encounter deck. Finding those few Locations can be very time consuming and can make the Adventure drag causing further problems.

Because of this it is helpful to have a way to Recur your deck just in case.

Also helpful is a way to incapacitate Enemies. That way you won't need to face them repeatedly.

A little healing can be helpful too.

Played Solo = Not too bad. Large Questing through the many Locations with the occasional Enemy or Treachery card. Knock each one down as it comes up so they don't stack up in the Staging Area or on you and you will blitz through.

Played with Two Players = A little more difficult with two. It is easy to miss the Victory Point cards needed to win.

Enemy Attacking Strength = High

Number of Enemy Attackers = Low

Character Blocking Strength Needed = High

Number of Blockers Needed = High. When Enemies hot they will kill

Surge = Low

Helpful to incapacitate Enemies = Very High

Questing Strength Needed = Very High

Location Effects? = High

Is Card Draw Helpful = High

Healing Strength Needed = Average

Threat Control Needed = Average

Shadow Control Needed = Very High

Condition Control Needed = High. Only one, but it kills

Random Treachery Effects = Very High. Crushing Treachery cards

Need for Direct Damage = High

Need to recur your deck = Average

Objective -
- Arwen Undomiel - Helpful but if she dies you lose

- Rocky Crags - Direct Damage to Travel here
- The Dimrill Stair - Takes back all Locations including Victory Points. Victory Points

Redhorn is Caradhras, right? I honestly had to double-check that, so you can tell my Tolkien knowledge is fading in my old age. But this set should bring in some Sarumanic spells and snowshoes. Again, guessing.

_8_ The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game - The Redhorn Gate x2

The Week in Review

Another week with just single night of gaming. Two plays of The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game – The Redhorn Gate. One a dismal failure and the other a (fudged) success.

These were my 77th and 78th plays of The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game making it the third most frequently played game in my collection (after Ascension: Storm of Souls and Carcassonne). All those plays have been spread between 13 different scenarios which certainly has helped in getting so many plays out of it. And with a few dozen more scenarios yet to play (should I collect them all), I don't see this game collecting dust any time soon...unless a better cooperative game comes along. So far Sentinels of the Multiverse and Pathfinder Adventure Card Game have failed. I have been thinking about picking up Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island and giving it a try.

Today, my Christmas package from German Board Games arrived, but S took it from me and wrapped the three games up for me to unwrap on the 25th.

shake

The Week Ahead

Although S and I have the week off, I don't see a lot of gaming happening. My parents are arriving on Tuesday and unless we pick up a Scrabble game, I doubt there'll be any gaming. Meanwhile, my unplayed pile will probably be the largest it's ever been with Madeira, De Vulgari Eloquentia, 1861: The Railways of the Russian Empire, Russian Railroads, Legacy: The Testament of Duke de Crecy, Glass Road, Innovation, Revolution: The Dutch Revolt 1568-1648 and a couple PnP 18xx games. Never mind that my wish list could add a few more to that in the next few weeks.

We got this for free after arguing that we just bought a buttload of packs. We were offered a packs of sleeves first, but who wants sleeves? Give me MORE GAMES.

This one apparently needs the first actual big box expansion thingy. I do not have this expansion. Thanks anyway.

Pro: The snow wolf thingy looks fabulous.

Contra: "Redhorn" is not nearly as much fun to say as "Rhosgobel" (Gesundheit).

***CLOSED. Sold to that pigeon***

Virtually as new, with packaging. English language.

I bought a big job lot of LotR stuff to get some cheap extra core sets, intending to sell off the adventure packs that I already had. This is one of them. It was sold to me as used, but if it was used, it was used very lightly.

Weighs under 120g, so £2.50 - £3 ish in the UK, more like £4 to Europe, but you will buy several and ship them all together to save money, won't you?

Starting price £7, ending October 15th.

I purchased the Lord of the Rings: The Card Game a while back and my limited experience with it is pretty positive. I jumjped in and picked up a lot of the booster packs (which seems almost required if you are actually gonna build interesting decks). I really like the LCG format (even though it's still quite a money sink). What about you? Do you have any LCGs that you like or are interested in? Do you like the LCG format or is it just another CCG in disguise?

Weekly Plays:

The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game - 7 (all solo, 5 Khazad-dûm, 1 Redhorn Gate, 1 Road to Rivendell)
Brass - 4 (all orderofthehammer)
Dominion - 2 (both isotropic)
Lords of Waterdeep - 1
Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization - 1 (boardgaming-online)

LotR heavy week. I tried my secrecy deck again against the first Khazad-dûm scenario and got crushed, so I constructed a new (Dwarf) deck. It's a little OP in that I'm using cards from all the APs and the first Hobbit expansion, but I restricted myself to one of each dwarf (even non-unique ones) just for variety, no Steward (thematic) or Unexpected Courage (not playing Spirit anyway except via Navri's Belt, but mostly wanted to avoid using), and two max of each other card except Gandalf and Navri's belt (which is key because of the Dwarves being spread over the spheres). What makes the deck so strong is the trio of heroes: Thorin (extra resource once I have five Dwarves), Dain (buffs Dwarves), and Ori (extra card once I have five Dwarves).

The first scenario was still tricky, but much more comfortable. Then the second scenario got me, to my surprise (it's supposed to be easier), after I kept hitting Goblins as shadow effects and had to add them to staging. The next night I tried again and beat it, and then beat the third scenario as well (which is my favorite scenario design of all the ones I've played so far, really nicely done).

Redhorn Gate is really annoying because of the victory condition (I ended up going through two thirds of the encounter deck, with the eventual outcome never really in doubt with all the Dwarves I had in play). Road to Rivendell was better, but on the easy side.

(I also got Massing at Osgiliath in my B&B order - gave up on waiting for Alien Artifacts, so I swapped some other stuff in. Rest of order was Puerto Rico, Agricola: World Championship Deck, Kingdom Builder: Nomads, Space Alert: New Frontier, Cities, and a bunch of sleeves.)

Lords of Waterdeep was with my parents this weekend. Took longer than I expected (we had to split it into two sessions, breaking for dinner), but they got into it pretty quickly. Dad won by a few points, putting together 10 quests which all matched his lord. (Naturally, both mandatory quests which saw play were given to me.) This is a nice, teachable game.

Some of you already saw the facebook post, but I'll quote it here, in case you start wondering about her absence from posts here:

Liz and I broke up tonight. We wanted everyone to know that... well, it sucks. But also that we had a really great time together, learning to love each other, having fun doing various activities (old and new), and wouldn't change that. We've both grown a lot this year.

The Redhorn Gate

Started with a song on Gloin and Gleowine to table. Everyone but Dain and Gleowine quested. Rocky Crags damaged Gloin and gave resources, while Gleowine drew a card - yet the quest failed by 2... Three locations on the staging area. On the next turn I got another Song, for Dain this time and two cheap dwarfs to quest. Everyone but Dain and Gleowine went forth again.

Black Uruks came to snoop around, but it wasn't going to get attacked because of the Turbulent Waters. After some rounds of pointless questing with slow progress Dain got the Stewardship again and the Uruks attacked finally.

Few turns passed and the band got new members from Faramir, Minstrels and dwarfs of whom some died on the journey. After a long and tiresome questing band finally reached Caradhas and got just enough to travel over it... Mountain Wargs attacked and just to be sure I had to Sneak Attack Minstrels to defend - I didn't want to lose Dain to bad shadow effect...

On the next turn I had nine questers, Dain and Faramir so it wasn't too hard to make it to the end.

Afterthoughts

Questing is easy, but combat still needs something... It's frustraring to realize, that to strike 5 on one turn, I need to drop a lot of questing power... Gildors might really be good here.

Score

Won, 36 Threat, 4 wounds, 4 VP

36 points
