I've set aside all my other wargames this month so that I can concentrate on Empire of the Sun. With all the videos, Vassal tutorials (thanks Judd) and FAQ, I'm armed and ready to tackle this Herman masterpiece.

I wanted to play CDGs last week. I was scheduled for Wilderness War on Wednesday and Washingtons War on Thursday. I had also taken delivery of Empire of the Sun. Reading three sets of rules and having two games set up combined with life resulted in not knowing the rules well enough to play any of them.

So instead I played Baseball Highlights twice (now rated a 10), Broom Service twice and Marco Polo twice.

A very new game for me, but my most anticipated game this year (which is high praise, considering that Napoleonics Expansion 5 is coming out this year, too). The wait was well worth it! I still have a ton to learn in this one, but I am enjoying every minute of it. I expect this one will be higher on this list by next year.

Teach? nope

Expertise: I'm in the upcoming AAC Empire of the Sun tournament and I'm looking for someone to PBEM and push counters around with over the next couple weeks to get a feel of how the game works. I've read the rules, watched some videos, and solo'd a bit. If you're just learning it too that works we can learn together.

This game has been on my wishlist for years, and I was psyched to get my preordered copy of the new second edition a few weeks ago. Got it on the table in the last couple days and played through a short scenario after a quick read of the rules, including the new "Card Driven Solitaire System" which provides a loose AI (named "Erasmus") to play against solo.

I worked through the comprehensive example of play, which takes you up through the oddball 1941 Turn 1 and then two cards of Turn 2. This proved to be a decent way to learn the basic rules, although I'm sure I still did a ton of stuff wrong once I played through the rest of Turns 2-4 (the 1942 turns).

The photo shows the situation at the end of Turn 2 - I know the common Japanese opening strategy is to try to make inroads into the Dutch East Indies as soon as possible, before Allied reinforcements start showing up, but due a quirk of the solo play system I knew I could force Burma to surrender in Turn 2, and cut off the Burma road in the process, so I did so. This could not have happened against a real opponent; I took Rangoon early, and I knew from the flowcharts that the Erasmus bot would use a card to shore up the Allied defense in Burma. I had a Gandhi card in hand which allowed me to cancel that entire offensive, leaving the entirety of Burma free of Allied units. I also knew Erasmus had no reaction cards in hand, so if I just swept through the Burmese hexes I would take control of the entire country and that control wouldn't be relinquished before the end of the turn (assuming my read of the rules is correct in that reaction movement is only possible in response to the declaration of a battle hex).

That felt a bit gamey, especially given the knowledge I had that I wouldn't have had against a live opponent, but I went for it anyway... and it didn't quite work out for me.

Because I spent a few offensives taking Burma in Turn 2, I didn't get into DEI at all until Turn 3 and was unable to gain control and force surrender. I came extremely close and controlled all of the DEI resource hexes with a couple cards left in Turn 3. But insufficient ASPs and a bad die roll meant I failed to force the ADBA HQ out of Tjilatjap, allowing the Allies to kick me off of Java altogether before the end of the turn. By Turn 4 too many reinforcements came in for me to get an easy victory.

I have to admit being a little befuddled by the Card Driven Solitaire System; the Erasmus flowcharts will probably make a lot more sense to me once I'm more familiar with the game rules and the strategic situation. I ended up mostly using the flowcharts as a guide and playing the Allied side to the best of my limited ability, rather than trying to strictly figure out what the AI wanted to do.

Still, I can see why this game is regarded as a classic and I'm looking forward to digging deeper into the strategy.

thumbsup Immediately obvious that there is a ton of strategic depth to explore here.
thumbsup I'm not really one to ooh and aah over components, but this is a really gorgeous game (even if the wargamer in me prefers paper maps over mounted maps).
thumbsup New solitaire system makes the game solo-friendly, at least in theory.
thumbsdown Solitaire system seems to require some level of familiarity with the game in order to run correctly. Or I'm just a bit dense.

I have been waiting for this one for quite a while and it finally arrived and I have been spending the weekend with it. I'm using the Card Driven Solitaire system, to run the allies and am peeking at the Japanese charts to give myself some tips on how to play.

This is the situation after the first turn of the 1942 campaign which took all afternoon for me to get through. Had a splitting headache by the end of the day, but it probably wasn't due to the game...but I'm not sure.

thumbsupthumbsup Beautiful game. I love the mounted map.
thumbsupthumbsup Mark Herman the designer is answering all questions super quickly
thumbsup There's lots of place to roll the dice right on the board, right below Hawaii. At least for now.

thumbsupthumbsdown It's a complicated game, and so far it's reminding me a little of learning ASL which was pure torture and required several attempts over a 15 year period. Whenever I do something here, I'm never 100% sure that I got it all correct.

thumbsup There's lots of great videos and VASSAL tutorial logs to help out.
thumbsdown There's lots of rules and little exceptions, so that even with all the help, it's still hard to get the confidence level up.
thumbsupthumbsup It's a lot of fun to design offensives, even for the AI. Reminds me a little of doing chess puzzles.

Beast.

Even to veteran gamers (like myself and those in my gaming group), this can be an intimidating game to learn and then play well.

Last week, I played 'solo' (co-op with a buddy) against the AI (named Erasmus) that's included in the 2nd edition. It was a wonderful learning experience, and the competent bot actually beat us (we did make a few bone-headed blunders).

Erasmus chart for the Japanese side, opening phase of the war.

Now I'm playing solitaire, controlling both sides (no Erasmus). The various card plays, reaction die rolls, and then combat rolls all combine to keep things fresh and interesting.

There is an analytical aspect to each and every turn, but it never gets tedious and the strategy options are plentiful.

Early 1942. A small contingent of Japanese marines have captured Guadalcanal, giving control of the Solomon Islands to the Emperor. Only a few brave Aussies stand in the way of Japanese entry into New Guniea.

thumbsup For a card-driven-wargame, plays surprisingly well solitaire.
thumbsup Two ways to play solo: either duel with the AI bot, or play both sides.
thumbsup Everything makes sense; being a 2nd edition (of a game first released back in 2005), every aspect has been locked down.
thumbsup Fantastic designer support!
thumbsdown This is a very complex - and time consuming - game to learn on your own (I actually enjoyed the process, but others may not).
thumbsdown The mounted map tends to have a slight peel problem, easily fixed with a small drop of glue.

1) Why are you looking forward to playing the game you selected as the GeekList Item?

I really had no interest in the Pacific theater, but after seevral games by the designer and hearing the ravings of my geekbuddies, I found a copy for about 20 Euros and am slogging through the rules.

2) Where are you located?
Eindhoven, the netherlands

3) Go to your profile. Click on Stats. Click on Games Owned by Year. (Alternatively you can change the username in this link)
Which year do you have the most published games from?

Really hard to say with all the expansions cluttering things up, and many titles going two lines. Let's guess at 2012

4) What is your favorite game from that year?

Virgin Queen, followed by Kingdom of Heaven and Polis

5) Anything else you would like to add?

Very few games from this year are very attractive (at least until GMT gets rolling again)- seems to be a lot (a LOT) of regurgitated ideas and similar mechanisms. The Kickstarter glut has diluted the field as every semi-good idea gets published. I no longer am too concerned in playing all the 'hot' titles, as all the 'hot' titles cool off within about six months now. Designer and publisher are what I look to now to ensure quality.

I keep hearing that this is a masterpiece and that it will soon be reprinted by GMT with solo rules at a great P500 price. I love the WWII Pacific theme and only really play wargames solo so this should be an instant buy. Yet, this is game seems very long, the rules are over 30 pages and the solo bot is supposedly more complex than Fire in the Lake... I've never played a COIN game but the bot in Labyrinth is already complex enough.... I also read the rules of Fields of Fire but never had the courage to play it due to perceived over-fiddliness. So why does this game still tempt me?

Succumb or overcome?

Nick and I have this setup on his basement table and have done Pearl Harbor. The real fun starts when he plays the 2nd card and figures out what to do and I figure out how to respond.
This should take a few sessions to finish up during the month, but we hope to have it completed about the time Beyond the Rhine is shipping.

Nick is running a blog as we play this out (and Mark Herman has already chimed in on it!).

My top 5 "Heavies":

Empire of the Sun (4.0)
High Frontier (4.2)
Burma (4.0)
Fields of Fire (4.0)
Navajo Wars (3.8)

Honorable mention: D-Day at Omaha Beach (3.4)

I initially had the Combat Commander Series (3.2) up here as well, but decided to take it off as I doubt that this is a "Heavy" game all things considered (rulebook length, turn length, planning vs. tactical decision making, etc.)

I can't really consider games like Dominant Species or Agricola all that heavy--as the rulebooks are fairly concise and straight-forward. Sure there is a lot of complexity and player interaction, but I don't think that necessarily makes a game "deep." For example, The Resistance is a lot of player interaction and can be difficult to predict.

Status: Made the cut, scheduled for May 2015 reprint.

Orders last month: 827

Orders to date: 879

Change: +52

The skinny:

Empire of the Sun (EotS) is Mark Herman's third card driven design since he introduced the system to the hobby in We The People. EotS is a strategic level look at the entire War in the Pacific from the attack on Pearl Harbor until the surrender of Japan. EotS is the first card driven game (CDG) to move the system closer to a classic hexagon wargame, while retaining all of the tension and uncertainty people have come to expect from a CDG. Players are cast in the role of MacArthur, Yamamoto, Nimitz, and Mountbatten as you direct your forces across the breadth of the globe from India to Hawaii and from Alaska to Australia. This is represented on a single map based on a 1942 equal area projection of the entire theater of conflict.

The reprint will come with the following updates and additions, according to Herman:

-A new edition of the rules has been created by EotS expert Antero Kuusi in order to make them more easily understood and accessible. The rules will be in color, and will include several optional variants.
-A mounted map, otherwise unchanged.
-About a third of the cards are being updated to either reflect FAQ clarifications or to add additional historical content.
-c3i counters will be included, and both the Japanese and U.S. will now have separately-colored army and navy units. Also, every ship counter will now have a unique name (no Kongo 1 and 2, etc.)
-Updated player aids.
-A new box cover
-A "player's guide" incorporating several articles on the game published in c3i.
-A rudimentary AI bot for both the US and Japan, in order to aid solo play. Herman says this will be a "version 1.0" that he hopes will be improved by input from the community.
