Got so screwed over in our first game that it only lasted about 20 or 30 mins before we lost. Seemed like the group would never want to play it again. Recently I saw the 2nd edition widely available and decided it was worth a retry based on the praise I've seen. Really is a great co-op, regardless of the huge luck factor

This is a game that's been on my wishlist for a number of years. I've mentioned a few times how I adore good Disaster Management games and played a bunch of them. The two that have, far and away, stood above the rest are Pandemic (with expansions 1 & 2) and Robinson Crusoe.

Last week, Dawn of the Zeds 3rd edition made it to my FLGS so I snatched it right up as an impulse buy. Said FLGS also had a few copies of 2nd edition PP so I picked it up too. Well, remembering my experiences with the first two editions of DotZ (namely that there are way too many hard-to-remember rules to help keep the otherwise gripping gameplay from falling apart) and how much free time I don't have and everything, I regretted that purchase. I kept it in shrink and, luckily, a friend wanted it but they were all sold out so he bought it off me for what I paid for it.

Back to PP. The night I bought it, I sorted it. I was extremely and pleasantly surprised by the quality of the components. I thought the player boards would be bendy cardstock, like those in Shadowrun Crossfire, but nay, they are solid cardboard. So too are the Crime Tracker and Evidence Board (one is just for laying down evidence cards and the other is equivalent to the "Outbreak Tracker" from Pandemic). Both are overly produced and probably could have been combined, but every time i look at that evidence board it evokes a feeling of "cop drama", so no complaints here!

PP falls squarely into the Disaster Management Co-op genre. Your main goal is to capture a murderer that's been annoying Commonville but you've gotta keep addressing the normal goings on of police work.

Essentially, you have three things you need to watch out for. You solve them by either rolling standard D6 (emergencies, street punks) or drawing cards (investigate the murder) from one of the 4 piles on the board; while this sounds dull, it actually is the core of crazy resource management this game presents to the player because the number of dice you get to roll or the number of cards you get to draw is mitigable.

d10-1 Emergencies - these can be burglaries, traffic accidents, gas leak, domestic disputes, etc etc. The way to solve them is roll one or more D6 and hit the number (or greater) on the card with one of the dice. The emergencies come out in 4 colors; if more than one emergency on the board have the same color, things start to get tense. Solve an emergency and you get a small reward.

d10-2 Punks - Punks hang out On bad hoods. If 4 or more punks ever show up on a street corner, they become a Gang. Gangs are bad news; they don't let you do certain things as long as they're around (for example, one gang doesn't let you investigate the murder!). Additionally, gangs don't disappear until every member is put away; getting them below 4 isn't enough.

d10-3 Investigating the murder-essentially similar to curing diseases in base pandemic. Find all the cards and then arrest the murderer before he escapes.

There are a bunch of things i didn't mention like the police cards which are a big part of the resource management. You can use them to assist another cop on their turn when doing the above 3 things (roll more dice or draw more cards), or use them on your turn for what the text says.

Also, being on the same space as another cop lets you draw an extra card or roll an extra die. Of course, like in Pandemic, this means there are areas of the map unattended while your cops are all partying in one secrion.

I lost but it felt like a good loss. The resource management is amazing. Assuming the balance is somewhat there (impossible to tell after one game), it's a tough game that absolutely stands up to my standards. I can't wait to play it again.

Will speak more after game 2

Played another game of this. Lost again but enjoyed it much more than my first play. I felt better prepared to tackle it, it's really tough but it doesn't feel like it's randomly so.

I love when multiple disasters need my attention and I can't figure out which to address first! The "Police" cards are a great way to have characters helping each other out.

I seriously hope they expand this game with some big box expansions, like Pandemic has done. There's a lot of abstraction here that can be made into interesting minigames on their own (a la Pandemics' Lab module).

(my initial comment read)

I totally trusted Jim when he told me his story.

(and then later I wrote this...)

UPDATE:

I have been having a conversation with Jim today (ever since I posted this item in the list).

He has admited wrong-doing to me and apparently feels great remorse about what he has done.

In the conversation we have been having I have suggested several things he might consider doing to build back his reputation in the community (if that's possible) and to feel better about himself (which I think is more important).

You can (if you wish) see all of this below in a totally unedited email chain.*

* when I say "totally unedited", I should point out that I did remove my email signature from every instance it occurred just to shorten the long wall-of-text below a bit.

Note #1: I do not know Jim.

Note #2: I am not defending Jim.

Note #3: I assume that posting this will in some way help everyone involved (or at least some of the people).

Note #4: As you can see below, I did this with Jim's permission.

Note #5: Since I think this is in some way helpful, I will post a link to it in the comments section.

Sincerely,

Karl, Founder CMG

I do agree that part of the price you pay for this should be to take the whole loss and not try to spread it to others.

Another thing you could do is make a list of all the publishers you approached and slowly over time try to repay them.

Examples of what you could do it...

Back their kickstarter to get the new game at full Kickstarter pricing (no deals), and even go as far as to...

Volunteer time helping them at cons, and to possibly start a game club at a local community center that serves under privileged youth, etc.

These are just ideas.

Doing these things could help rebuild your reputation and make you feel better about yourself.

Good luck!

Karl

PS - have you tried (yet) to tell the community what you just told me via that list or by other means?

Karl,

To start - I have no excuse. I have acted despicably.

I was the victim of a crime. But not earlier this week, last month, in March.

I did have a copy of Police Precinct in the car, and a large number of other games (I was in the middle of a move at the time, and was moving a carload of games at the time of the incident - 1 blue IKEA bag in the front seat, 3 in the back, and 3 in the trunk - but not a copy of every game I claimed I had.

I was the victim of a crime, but I did lie about when it happened. I thought if I told people it happened more recently than it did, I might be able to garner more sympathy, and thus, more free stuff. That is despicable, disgusting, and not at all like the person I picture myself being.

I let myself fall into a self-pity-pit and me emailing good people like yourself asking for handouts was nothing more than me allowing myself to wallow. "My car was broken into and I lost some replaceable goods - 'Oh, woe is me!'"

We did have renter's insurance, but it turns out the policy my wife got for us didn't include me. So when we filed the claim, it was rejected because the property we were claiming was stolen was mine.

Either way, I am truly sorry for trying to take advantage of your good nature. I know it is so easy for me to say now, in retrospect, and such a cliche, but I'm glad I was caught. That isn't who I want to be, and not how I want to act. I know I'm not a bad person, but I acted like a grade-A asshole. The only glimmer of good here is that going through this, and feeling as low and as much sincere self-loathing as I do now, I know I'll never act in this way again.

I know nothing I can say will change the way you (or I) feel about myself right now. But there it is.

Attached is a police report an officer brought to me after some of my stolen goods were found in another district of the city. They contacted me because among the items turned in was my ID.

Sincerely,
Jim

Please don't take advantage of hard working publishers.

I do NOT have enough information about you to think that you are, so do NOT take that as an accusation.

I am posting on the list in a totally neutral way because I think it's my duty.

Both my duty to post AND to do it in a neutral way.

All I said was...

I meant that to be as neutral as possible.

I was once accused of something that I did not do, so I am very sensitive to making accusations, and I do not want to be a party to that ever, and am not a party to that here.

I'm currently trying to line-up some demo copies, so how about this...

A. KICKSTARTER:
During the Upcoming Kickstarter pledge at the $25 level and get a demo copy for $15 with free shipping along with some extras that put you at or above $25. (just remind me after the KS is over about the $15 demo copy offer)

-- OR --

B. AFTER KICKSTARTER:
If nothing appeals to you enough to do option A (or finances are too tight), pick back up this conversation after the KS ends by replying again to this email, and I'll ship you the Demo for a Paypal of $15 (free shipping).

Sound good?

How about if we (you and I) share in the loss?

Meaning, we would pay part of the cost (so to speak -- via a ridiculously large discount) and you would pay part of the cost.

Plan A:
I sell you a game at 60% off MSRP with Free shipping in conjunction with our upcoming Kickstarter. That would be a brand new game in shrink for $24 (that's less than what stores pay).

Plan B:
The other option is to send you a Dent and ding game for even less (like a beat up demo copy).

Thoughts?

Hello!

Earlier this week, my car was broken into (http://goo.gl/DyiCvy). In addition to taking my backpack, which contained my wallet, social security card, and $2000 laptop, (which I need for work) they also took a bunch of games I had in the backseat.

Among them was my copy of Police Precinct. =(

I know there is likely no precedent for this, and that you being able to help me out is not likely, but I figured I would ask - is there any way Common Man Games would be able to replace any of the games I lost?

Again, I know this is asking a lot, but I thought I would reach out and check.

Thanks so much!

================== End of Email Thread =========================

=================== Added a Day Later (below) ====================

Reflections From "The Morning After"...

I feel like Jim used me as a tool in this. He could see that I was slow to think the worst of him so he played me.

That said...

I really DO hope that he takes my advice and gives back to the world in some way. I know this is HIGHLY unlikely, but I can still hope.

Here's how this situation has all unfolded in my little world...

Over this past weekend Jim approached me and we worked out a plan for how we (Common Man) could help him with his unfortunate situation.

Then I saw a tweet yesterday from Minion about this and came here to look at this list so that I could see what it was all about. I very quickly realized that this guy (Jim) might be scamming a lot of people, so I (rather than reading the entire thread) quickly posted my item. As soon as I was done doing that, I then told Jim that I had seen this list and even posted my item to it. I wanted to hear his thoughts on this matter. I also wanted to him to know that this wasn't a matter of me "talking behind his back". In essence, I wanted to "look him in the eye" and ask him about this directly.

That's how the conversation started, and please know that during the conversation, I was both working and going back and forth with him (not reading the thread any deeper), so all I really knew is that a good number of people were apparently quite concerned that he might be scamming the system so-to-speak (I had no idea of the real depth of it).

During the talk we had (via email) he admitted that he was doing very bad things in this case and said he deeply regretted his actions. I offered to let him tell the world of gamers what he had already told me via my posting our entire chat (since he had already by that point been banned from BGG and was unable to do this himself). He agreed, and I did so.

I have no regrets about that, but I want to say that it was AFTER that point in time that I started reading more of the thread and realizing that this guy had been doing this at a criminal level for years.

This made me feel like I had been used and played by a master con artist.

I felt sad, angry, and much more -- but due to the way this community is to its core I did NOT feel alone.

I wish to sayTHANKS to all of you for your great outrage and clear stand on this kind of behavior. This industry/hobby is a very unique one, and one that I'm quite proud to be a part of.

Part of the Healing Process for me...

Involves creating this:

Not fully sure why, but seeing this somehow makes me happy!

PS - I just updated the card to reflect The REAL Officer who reported the incident! (Officer J.T. Call -- The O.P.) J.T. we all thank you, GREAT Job!!!

Final Thoughts:
(written in the days following)
At times I feel like I don't ever want Jim to come back to our community, but when I reflect deeper I have to say that I truly hope that this story is not over and that in the end, after a long hard road to recovery (meant in every sense) Jim becomes a person that we all know, love, and trust. For me, this could not happen overnight. I would have to see many years of dedication on his part. No matter what, I hope for the best for Jim.

Now that I own a 3D printer, I had to make something for Police Precinct:

This Roadsign and the Police Badge are both 3D printed and painted (downloadable in the files section) and for use as a startplayer piece or as decoration.
I also translated the game overview from english to german:

In the games gallery you can also find images of all my 3D printed cars, officers, punks and donuts for Police Precinct and the backside of the game overview.

Only one guy could make it this week for Thursday Game Night. It's been a while since we played Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game, so we busted out the Wheel of Fate randomizer and promptly got out buts handed to us by MoleMan and the Organized Crime Wave plot. We played twice and lost both of them. Between the plot twists wreaking havoc with the Maggia Goons and the Master Strike messing with the Subteranea, we just couldn't keep up. The second game, my friend was able to get some good combos going with Gambit and Rogue but in the end it was not enough.

Over the weekend my wife and I played Police Precinct 4 times. We haven't quite figured out the puzzle here. We were able to win one of the games. I would forget to use my officer's special powers from time to time. That does not help at all. The emergency's just keep coming and coming. I'm glad that my wife is enjoying it and "just want to beat that game". It'll probably keep hitting the table if that's the case.

have a great week everyone!

It's been a few weeks since I've posted. Work has been crazy, they cut the IT staff here from 10 down to 4. The 4 of us left have switched into survival mode and just trying to stay above water. Just needed to get out here and post and look around for a bit. Even through it, I've been able to play a few games.

On Tuesday, my son's soccer game was cancelled. We didn't have anything going on, so I suggested a game with my wife. She suggested we play duck! duck! Go!. It's been a while since we've played. We tried a different setup for the board and have a good time bumping around. I got off to a great start, then could not draw cards that would get me going through a tight spot. She kept plugging along and won this one.

We moved our weekly gaming night to Thursday. I'm glad my former co-workers are still coming over to play, I think it's good therapy for them and I get to keep in touch with them. They haven't landed a job yet but are chasing leads. One of them got Blood Rage for his birthday and taught us how to play. I've heard so many good things about this game and was very excited to try it out. I was not disappointed. I like the elements in this game. The card drafting to try and put a game plan together (doesn't always work out), then the battling and positioning on the board. We had a great time playing. I can't wait to try it again!

Friday night was another cancellation of a soccer game, so I suggested my wife and I play Coal Baron. this game is really clicking with me and I've been winning quite a lot. I think I'm getting better at planning ahead, watching what others are trying to do and get the actions when they don't cost as many workers. I think that's what I'm doing right. Either way, I'm having a lot of fun playing.

I got the 2nd edition of Police Precinct a while ago from the kickstarter and it's been staring at me. I decided this was going to be the weekend I figured it out and played. On Saturday, I played it through solo and took my time doing it. Trying to make sure I was doing things right. I stumbled on a few things and failed miserably. I felt I at least had the mechanics down. On Sunday I taught my wife to play and we dove in. We lost the first game pretty badly. We didn't use our character powers at all. I didn't even think of them, I was too busy making sure we took our turns correctly. At least my wife had enough fun that she wanted to try again. This time we made sure we were using our powers and it helped. We made it even further, but still lost. She's said a couple times since then that she wants to have another try at that game. She didn't like losing to that game.

I've got my wife hooked on playing Lords of Waterdeep on my phone. We like having the computer play along. I'm not a fan of the two-player, so this is a good option when we don't have anyone else to play. I've played this way too much on my phone and she didn't have much of a chance. I won pretty easily.

With baseball season starting, I thought to myself... I haven't played Strat-O-Matic Baseball in a LONG time. It was time to dust it off and give it a go. I dug things out and tried to figure out where I was in my random playoff scenario. I needed to start the LDS between the '91 Mets and the '03 Rockies. I thought the Mets would clean up, but they lost 5-0. Cone was just not in his groove for this game. For the most part, it all came back to me but I did need to reference the rules a few times.

Have a great week everyone!
