Haven't played this in a long time. With the re-release this year, it's peaked my interest to try it again. If I remember correctly: an exercise: in frustration of limited resources...always one action point away from doing everything you want to in a turn.

Bought first edition. Beautiful abstract city building game. But only played 3-4 players out of the box.

Second edition has two player board, enhance, additional rules and better pieces.

Verdict: Should have waited.

Quite a bit of gaming this week considering that I was on vacation. I brought the Travel Edition of Ingenious with me. Jenn and I played several matches throughout the week. I won them all, but she came close on one and could have beaten me with a meaner move at the end.

We happened to run into a friend of Jenn's (also named Jen) as we were walking down the street in Toronto. We didn't have any plans later that night after going to see Ex Machina, so I suggested that we get together for board games afterward. I expected that this would involve some gaming, as I was aware that Jen's partner is

It did. They treated us to some take-out Indian food and Adam introduced us to Medina and Infiltration. I had been looking for an opportunity to give Medina a try for a long time. Not surprisingly, I enjoyed it a great deal. It has a similar feel to Dorra's MarraCash. To win, you have to encourage other players to help you out by manipulating incentives. Simple rules, deep decisions. Dorra rarely disappoints. I won this one by taking palaces surrounding the markets early. That meant that no one could lay markets without giving me a lot of points, which meant that I was free to do other things, including one particularly nasty move to limit the potential for growth of one of Adam's key palaces.

Infiltration was okay, I guess. I like Dominion and I like Kingdom Builder, so I was hopeful that DXV might have designed something equally enjoyable. Infiltration is not that something. It's very light, essentially an Ameritrash Incan Gold but with a higher probability of everyone losing, as occurred in our game. Looking back, I can see what we could have done to avoid the outcome, and although a more cautious approach would have worked out better in this play, it could have easily gone otherwise. There's so much luck it's difficult to strategize except in retrospect. In our play, the game had an unfortunate mismatch between fun and optimal play. Never a good thing.

Friday night we met up with some friends for food and drinks. The group decided to go to a board game cafe afterward. Not Snakes & Lattes, which, being the best place in town, we thought might be too busy to walk in and get a table. We went elsewhere. They had a much smaller selection. We played 6p Balderdash, Cockroach Poker, and a few rounds of Telestrations. Telestrations went over especially well. Good times with good friends.

Rating 8 after 1 play

I've wanted to play Medina for years. Who wouldn't want to score points for playing with building blocks!? Unfortunately its been out of print for a while... but the new edition drove the price on the old edition into my reasonable range and I finally got myself a copy... and I'm glad I finally did! Clearly playing with those chunky pieces and playing a game that looks cool from across the room was a factor... but I really like games with simple rules and depth of play so simply placing two pieces a turn within the limitations of the placement rules and with a mind to the different ways to score points was very enjoyable to me. It is a game of brinksmanship where you need to snag things of value before other people grab them... but the tower and largest palace bonus tiles can be defended with clever placements if you grab them early. So finding that timing between being to early and too late is very enjoyable and I look forward to building a lot more wooden cities in the future!

Rating 8 after 1 play

Hey! They got some Hanabi in my TTR! At least that's how the team rules for Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 1 – Team Asia & Legendary Asia felt to me. Not discussing moves but using your moves and shared card holder to convey information was a really nice twist on the game and this is now my new favorite way to play TTR... at least with 6. We'll have to try it with 4 and see how that goes.

Rating 7 after 1 play

I like a lot of what is happening in Deus but have a couple negatives that might outweigh those positives. Finding card combos and activating cool action chains is pretty fun. The map is an innovative effort... but like a lot of people I didn't like the style all the much and would have preferred something with a more classic or small world type of look. Speaking of the map we found the map placements to feel somewhat superfluous for much of the game leaving us with a very multi-player solitaire sort of feel. Perhaps that's because I was the only player actively pursuing an expansion strategy. I also wasn't sure if I won because I played my starting hand the best... or simply was dealt the best starting hand and snowballed to victory based on that early boost of crazy expansion and money making. We also ended up in a situation where nobody in position to build the final boat to claim the final village and end the game could for several rounds. Having a game that is already decided regardless of card draws refusing to end because of card draws was annoying.

So... most of those negatives could simply be session related... so I'd like to play again and see. If they crop up again I'm content with this being a game I enjoy the idea of and am willing to play from time to time but don't need to own.

Rating 7 after 1 play

Infinite City is a pleasant enough positional tile layer. Trying to make the best moves using the special powers of your tiles while keeping your pieces together so they can score is enjoyable. There are a lot of "take that" style tiles though... and in our game I drew the most power stations (which deny most "take that" effects to pieces near them) and was able to chain them to protect my pieces and pretty easily win the game. So between the swingy powers of the tiles and the constantly changing board state this feels quite a bit more random than other similar games I enjoy... but I'd play again if offered.

Rating 6.5 after 1 play

Compounded has been sitting on my shelf unplayed since the kickstarter ended... which is weird for me. But I felt like there were nuances of the timing rules that I just wasn't getting so couldn't get excited for it. A friend really wanted to try it recently though so we finally got it out... and I enjoyed it except that we did end up feeling like we were floundering through some of the lab fire and scoring stuff. The basics of the game are quite nice as I like trading games and improvable abilities in a game... but other parts of game feeling so fiddly/rulesy kind of turned me off. I want to try again so see if experience smooths some of that out... but I think my search for a trading game heavier than Bohnanza but less purely mathy than Chinatown continues.

Rating 6.5 after 2 plays

That rating for March of the Ants is completely unfair as I only managed to play solo so far... and I generally don't like playing board games solo. Also, without the action following and sharing of meadow tiles with other players that happens in a multi-player game I think the solo game is indeed much different here. I do like the idea of evolution "techs" for your ants and the resource management and action selection bits seem to work well... but it was hard to see the game flow when you're on the edge of getting wiped off the board by rampant centipedes all game. I think I'll like this a lot more when I play the "real" 3-5 player game.

Rating 6 after 1 play

Kittens in a Blender is a pretty basic take that filler game that will probably succeed or not for you based on the theme. Our group got into it by describing why certain kittens were going where (for instance at one point "Coolio" ended up on the counter because a player couldn't bear to put him in the Blender...) so I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. If you don't find the theme distasteful then its worth a play to wind up or wind down your night... but its no Coloretto or Piece O Cake.
