Edition/Publisher: Rio Grande Games (English)

Condition/Comments: There is some discoloration of the wood where "The City" piece of cardboard (see picture entry where this cardboard was to get an idea of where the discoloration is) was in the shrink wrap game. There is a slight chip taken out of a piece of the wood on the bottom. This game does not include a cloth bag. Based on the way the tiles are made in multiple stacks and the importance of when a stack depletes, the bag is not very useful. I don't know if this originally came with an insert as I got this in a trade, but this doesn't. The game components are in excellent condition.

Please note: I reserve the right to ship after a leftovers trade, if one takes place.

Carcassonne: The City

We picked this one up in a math trade and were immediately impressed with this game. My wife really likes Carcassonne but I was getting burned out on it. This one takes the same general idea and adds some strategy and interesting decisions to the mix. This one has easily become our favourite version of Carcassonne and is our favourite new game of the month.

Council of Four

We grabbed this one as we've been impressed by Simone Luciani's more recent games like Tzolk'in, The Voyages of Marco Polo, and Grand Austria Hotel. It's easy to see his influences in this one but I feel like it's one of his weaker games when compared to the others I mentioned. The few games we have played of this so far have been enjoyable and challenging but seem to be missing that little something that makes the other ones feel special. Still a good game on its own though and one that I hope we'll play from time-to-time.

Dead Men Tell No Tales

Another math trade acquisition as my wife thought it seemed interesting. We've only played one game so far and it fell quite flat for us as there was zero challenge. No rampaging fires. No real dangers. Not even a single explosion. Maybe it was just luck that everything played out that way. We needed to review the rules a few times just to make sure we weren't screwing anything up and found that we were indeed playing it correctly. I know we need to play this a couple of more times to really get a feel for it and see if things get any more difficult, but it's going to be tough to do that as it didn't set a very good first impression for us.

Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective

We picked this one up on a trip up to Saskatoon as it's the only time that we've seen a copy in the wild and wanted to give it a try. The first case didn't go so well for us and we stopped about half way through the second as we were playing it late one evening. So far neither of us are terribly impressed by the game. It's a neat idea but something about it just doesn't seem to be clicking for us yet.

Automania

We had wanted to pick this one up during the first print run but they seemed to be sold out everywhere we looked. We jumped all over the few available copies once the second printing was available. Definitely one that was worth picking up for us. Despite being pretty simple as far as gameplay goes, there always seems to be some interesting choices to be made on each of your turns and things get pretty competitive very quickly. We've only played twice so far but have been really enjoying the experience.

Another quiet week for us as we spent the better part of it up in a cute little cabin in Jasper as a little getaway and to celebrate my birthday. We took a small collection of games with us since it was supposed to rain for part of the week and thought we might be stuck indoors if the rain got really bad. We played Dead Men Tell No Tales for the first time after getting it in a math trade on Thursday evening. Pretty easy game to play but nothing terribly interesting happened for us the entire game. Things just went along smoothly with no explosions or problems contain the fires. Then we won. We re-checked the rules a number of times to make sure we weren't making any mistakes but we were definitely playing it correctly. I guess everything just went our way during the game but it set a bad first impression. We'll definitely have to play this one again and see if it plays out any differently the new time or two around.

It rained harder on Friday afternoon so we decided to play Summoner Wars to ride out the bad weather, deciding to try a couple of the factions that we hadn't played yet. I took the Benders while she took the Jungle Elves. I got into a tight spot early on as she wiped out most of my units, but a well-timed draw of Mind Control let me take control of her Lioneer and even the odds a little. There was a bit of back-and-forth until I managed to unsummon one of her last units and mind control the other, letting me surround her and finish her off.

With the rain still coming down, we next turned to Carcassonne: The City which has quickly become our favourite version of Carcassonne. She managed to screw me over a few times by completing a scoring features in order to build walls right before I could do the same which let her position some pretty valuable guards and towers. I struck back with a really valuable steward but fell a mere two points shy of her score. I lost this one 189-191.

Innovation was our last game before the rain let up to let us wander around some more. Apart from a couple of nicely executed domain dominations, I really sucked and couldn't do anything to slow down her alarming influence accumulation. She won this one quite soundly 3-7.

Tired from the drive back on Saturday, we decided to finally try out Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective on Saturday evening, a game that we picked up about two months ago on a small trip. We went through the first case and thought we had it all figured out, only to find out that we were wrong about the who and they why. After reading through the answer, we both were rather unhappy as some of the evidence was pretty flimsy. We managed to answer most of the questions correctly though and came out with a score of an even zero. A little disappointed by the case, we decided to move on to the second one, hoping that it would make a little more sense. We managed to get I'd guess about half way through before we decided we were too tired to carry on for the evening. We'll probably pick this one up again in the next few days.

This is the first edition (2004) in the wooden box. Carcassonne was coming out with multiple expansions and versions at the time and I bought it. I played it maybe 3 times. It was fun, but not so much more than regular Carcassonne with some of its expansions. I'd like to get some value out of this wooden set (if any).

A really quiet week for us. Things started with one game of Carcassonne: The City on Wednesday was all we were able to get in. I managed to win this one 286-249 thanks to some nicely-placed walls and a few very high scoring towers.

We finished off our really light week with two plays of The Grizzled. The first game ended in a crushing defeat as we seemed to never make any progress through the trials deck before the monument was revealed. The second game went considerably better. While we face a few issues with hard knocks, we were able to work around them and managed to survive until the end of the war.

Our copy of Carcassonne: The City that we got from a recent math trade showed up at the beginning of the week and we were both pretty eager to give it a try. Our first game was on Tuesday in which I lost by a single point; 180-181 was the final score here. Another game on Tuesday where this time I managed to stay just slightly ahead of her the entire game. This one ended 220-201 in my favour. We played yet another game of it on Thursday. Things played fairly aggressively as we had a pretty good handle on how everything worked now and fully realized that scoring something for your opponent can be a great move if you can get a bunch of points out of the wall building phase immediately after. She managed to weasel her way on to some incredibly valuable wall spots which really hurt me. She won this third game 247-272. We're both really enjoying this one. While I had pretty much burned out on the original Carcassonne, this one feel a lot more strategic and competitive; the walls closing in around the city are an interesting mix of a way of getting points, both from scoring the wall itself and being a way to terminate a feature that you just can't find that last tile for. A really interesting twist on Carcassonne and looks great as the walls start to get built around everything. Very happy with this one.

We took Raptor off the shelf for the first time in about six months on Friday evening. Thankfully and easy enough game where a 30 second skim through the rules was enough to refresh everything for us. She had managed to devour a couple of my scientists early on then hit a spot where she couldn't draw a high-value card to use any action points. This left me with a few turns where I had quite a few actions to put baby raptors to sleep and move into position. Things slowed a little as we trade a 1 or 2 action point turn back and forth with neither of us accomplishing too much until I got a 8 AP turn that gave me the last two raptors that I needed.

Sunday started with an afternoon game of 7 Wonders: Duel. I knew I was in trouble early on when she kept taking all of the cards that I was hoping to grab and then built 3 of her wonders in a single turn. I was able to fight back a little when I started getting two of my wonders built, but my small bit of momentum was quickly squashed by my wife as she grabbed everything I could get for free and instead had to sink all of my money into purchasing the leftovers. I got streamrolled in this one: 55-80.

In the evening we played a quick game of Jaipur which we hadn't played for a few months. The first round was rather one-sided in my favour. The second round was a little closer but still ended up going my way. I won the game 2-0.

We finished off the evening with one game of [thing=121297]Fleet. It was a pretty tight race as we both had quite a few boats out on the table. Despite not getting a few points because of some extra cubes left on her processing vessel license, she still managed to win this very close game with a final score of 63-65.

Here you begin with a normal Carcassonne play but this is soon modified as walls begin to go up around the city. Out of all the Carc variants, this one can be killed with AP players. So be warned. Otherwise, this is actually a great standalone game that adds a 3D aspect to the game as the walls and towers are added.

I've got the wood box edition, and we love this one. It competes for my favorite version. It's such a cool looking game, with wood walls, a wooden gate, and wooden tower pieces, all of which are built around the tiles as you play, closing it all in. It's amazing how much that element adds to the game. For our second game of the night on our anniversary, my wife beat me by a single point. I just can't seem to get enough of those losses, they sure are awesome.

We probably should have called it quits after Entdecker, but since when do rational decision making and LoBsterCon go together?
