Was at the DI today looking a very sad, sad collection of games (Gold Digger was the best one, but i already thrifted that. I went to check the books, as i always do, and i found this little hardback gem for $2. The books is in great condition and i'm really happy to find it. I passed on this back in the 'close out' days, when retailers were dumping GW, so i'm glad to find this for a great price.

someday i may even play the game.

I like showing up to game night with the only Warhammer 40K Army. It's the same one I haven't played in over 10 years. Space Marines, you know, those guys we read about in all kinds of old Science Fiction, that GW has recently invented. Heard they recently invented the internet too.

Caught a Games Workshop logo and found a set of Warhammer 40k figures
SPACE ORC BATTLE FORCE

I'm not sure if they are all there or not. Looks like some are assembled, some have been primered and some have been painted....they rest are just pieces of arms and legs and bases. I'm sure there are a few. There ARE the two main cars and all 5 motorcycles though...you know. The best stuffs!

My Bible study assistant showed me some of his Guard and probably Black Templar. It looked interesting. I can't remember if I picked up the book and some Tau off Ebay before I learned the game from them? I want to say I checked it out and tried to teach myself before officially learning. I'm going to guess I played my first game as Tau with either IG or Black Templar (or both?) against Chaos (the more mechanical / long distance shooting one) and Orks. I can't remember all of the order of events but two of the students from the Bible study also got into 40K. One of the older members started with Orks. I introduced one of the younger members to Tau. It wasn't really his style but that is what he played until the new Dark Eldar codex came out.

, discussing the fun weekend we'd had at the local gaming convention, Recruits, over the past weekend.

I don't see anything of interest on the shelves, but glance down at the bottom shelf of a bookcase and see a Warhammer 40K army box. What?! I'm not a WH40K player, but know that the minis can be used for a myriad of other games.

All told, I got a majority of a Catachan Army box. 40 jungle fighters, five different heavy weapons platforms and five Space Marines to boot. It was $2.92, but the store had 50% off for seniors. I'm not a senior, but the cute checkout lady gave me the discount anyway. Score (on the toys...I'm happily married)! Plus, I've got Ken as an auditory witness!

Warhammer 40k was the perfect storm. I was a young teenager, and the game combined the collectible "show off your stuff" aspects of Pokemon and Star Wars, but it also had the rusty, bloody, blow stuff up sort of theme that had once attracted me to Battletech.

Warhammer 40k was also one of the greatest ploys I concocted against my parents (at least, that's how I view it). See, 40k is definitely a dark game. It's not the sort of thing you could easily convince your mom to buy you. My parent's pretty much said "No" when I asked for it for Christmas. So, I asked for a drum set instead. "Please!" I begged, and since my parents had long ago made the mistake of promising a drum set once I took 5 years of piano, they were stuck. Would they get me a drum set? Well, no. My family was always frugal with money, and a full $500+ drum kit was a bit outside of our usual Christmas gift budget per child (I am one of three). But I had a hidden agenda. I knew that I wouldn't get a drum set, but if I asked for it enough, my parents would reason "well, we can't get him the set, but maybe at least we could get him that skulls and monsters game he wanted".

Christmas Morning came. Before my eyes was a Warhammer 40k starter kit (the one with Space Marines and Dark Elder). I loved it. I painted them all. I bought many other minis over the course of my teenage years, including a few of the codexes.

And guess what? I played it about six times total. But that wasn't the point. The point was how cool it looked on my shelf.

As a missionary, I needed a sanity saving hobby I could indulge in for 30 minutes at the start and end of the day. I picked up a few boxes of 40k Tau models and some paints, and took up minis painting. It was a very relaxing exercise. There was something very zen about sitting down to paint my little men. At the time, I didn't know jack-squat about the game. Sure, I had seen it played in game shops since I was a boy, and I thought that it was neat to look at, but that was it.

After I got home in 2006, I picked up the actual game. I had a lot of fun. I was Tau, my brothers were Orks and Necrons. We built terrain out of legos and played on the kitchen table. When I went off to BYU I kept painting, got in a game here or there. I did realize, however, that Games Workshop didn't actually run a very tight game, and just kept on at the hobby because I was tired of watching the game degenerate.

This experience did teach me, however, that I loved minis gaming. I would keep my eyes peeled, and eventually I would find a new love.

I do not plan on buying any of the miniatures, because I am fairly confident I can make the game work using paper minis from one monk miniatures.

$2/sac VV
Found 4 sacs of WH 40k minis, roughly 30 chaos plague marines (nicely painted), 30 kroot (partially painted...badly), as well as a few pewter hero minis including a great big pewter chaos plague marine with a scythe, a version of the rightmost mini seen in the pic, a partially painted dwarf slayer on a demon head as well as a few WH fantasy pewter minis (some painted very well, others bare or basecoated only)
Also came it various bits and 3 dreadnought ships the were very well painted.
Some bugger had got into one of the sacs...likely to swipe a pewter mini.

I figured I'd find something considering how they have 5 codexs and a White Dwarf 300th issue in the book section a few days earlier. I didn't bother with those but I grabbed the 2 WH 40k graphic novels.

Kinda regret not snagging the bag of WH orks I found at Talize a few months back. Oh well, I've got plenty of painting fun coming my way this summer when classes are done.
