Analogous to RoboRally (already on the list) but shorter and more minimalistic/abstract. Players simultaneously program their robots to move around the map, and the usual amusing chaos of simultaneous robot programming ensues with pushing, shooting, ramming, etc.

RAMbots is similar in style to RoboRally (already on the list) (but shorter and more elegant): you program your robot to visit 4 goals in a specific order. The goals are themselves pieces which might get pushed around on the board.

Since you apparently accept RoboRally as simple enough, I guess RAMbots (which I find to be simpler and more elegant) is also suitable for the list.

RAMbots is one of the many games using Looney Pyramids. It's one of the pyramid games I always enjoy, but since it's not a pure abstract strategy game and is about programming robots, I'd not previously convinced my wife Anna to play. However we have been playing an 8x8 grid game each day in September, so I finally got to play 3 games of RAMbots with her, including a 3-player with a pyramid-playing friend, and these are the only logged games I see in September.

RAMbots is much less well known than the similarly themed RoboRally, which I used to play back in the day. Both games are about simultaneously programming your robots to race around to various goals, and then executing the programs, often running into each other and shooting each other, with amusing chaos as a result. But in detail they are quite different.

RAMbots is more elegant/abstract, taking place on a plain 8x8 grid, and it has a neat mechanism of using pyramids as program instructions, pointing the direction you move, and the color representing the type of laser you shoot after each move (yellow = pull, blue = push, green = stand up, red = damage). It has the great advantage of finishing within a half hour, whereas RoboRally often dragged on for hours because people always insisted on using a large map and extra deck of additional weapons... Although I used to enjoy RoboRally a lot, RAMbots became my "robot programming game" of choice!

Another "program your robot" game, in a similar vein to RoboRally (but shorter and more elegant). After everyone simultaneously creates their programs, the programs are executed completely deterministically.

This game was ridiculously difficult to get onto only two pages. It's essentially "Robo Rally light" although it has some elements (like the fact that beacons keep moving around) that make it more interesting to me in some ways. Also: it plays in much less time, which is a plus.

Rob and I sat down to work out this Roborally type game. It's actually pretty nifty. The rules are online if you want them at koryheath.com/games/rambots You don't really need the little pyramids to play, you can just use coloured bits of paper or fold your own

Superficially similar to the more well-known RoboRally, this Icehouse pyramid game was developed independently of RoboRally and has some quite interesting differences. E.g. there is no luck of the draw of program cards; rather, you have a set of pyramids that you use to write your program (indicating direction, action=color, priority=size(1,2,3)) and when someone damages you, they steal one of your pyramids, so your later options are reduced.

First play = 2010-07-13

I finally got my order of Rainbow pyramids and so I proposed this game (that uses red/green/yellow/blue color coding) which I'd been looking forward to forever. MisterC and I played it 2-player and really enjoy it! Enough to play 3 times in a row, even (after our traditional Gnostica match to open the evening...)

Comparisons with RoboRally are inevitable. Kory Heath says in his design history that RoboRally wasn't a direct influence (he'd not played it). I have played a lot of RoboRally (and used to own it and the expansions). At this point, I like RAMbots better. It's more elegant and minimalist, without the plethora of special gadgets, board elements, etc of RoboRally. (This could be a pro or a con, depending on one's personal preference.) The way programming and damage works seems more pleasing to me in RAMbots. (And RAMbots doesn't have the weird virtual robot and multiple lives stuff.)

Yet RAMbots still gives the fundamental core experience of the amusing chaos of simultaneously preprogrammed robots messing with each other, and it doesn't have RoboRally's problem of potentially taking several hours to finish.

Of course in theory, if one wanted more of the RoboRally ameritrash "lots of stuff" feel, one could add conveyor belts, crushers, and so on, even playing RAMbots on RoboRally boards I suppose. And special gadgets acquired during play could be additional colored pyramids. Maybe someday I'll experiment... but meanwhile it's a good game as is.

I am looking forward to trying it multiplayer for more preprogrammed chaos. Meanwhile, it was pleasingly fun 2-player (and of course more strategic that way).

I wish there was some place to play it online! But hopefully we'll get more live games soon. It seems local interest in Icehouse pyramids is increasing. MisterC has been translating some games to Polish at http://icehousegames.org/wiki/index.php?title=Strona_G%C5%82... and other local folks have been talking about ordering some pyramids. It seems my incessant pyramid proselytizing lately has started to pay off...

RoboRally was my induction into the world of boardgaming beyond Monopoly and Pachisi, introduced to me by my cousin back when they still made it with little metal robots. When Avalon Hill started producing new copies of the game, I was given one as a birthday gift and had many hours of fun playing it. However, for all the fun I've had, there is no denying that there is a LOT of down time. Each player frenetically races to place their cards down, and then you sit as the programs are executed painstakingly and slowly and then the massive deck is reshuffled and re-dealt.

RAMbots has a lot of what I like about RoboRally, with very little of what I dislike.

It's a purer, less random game in which you almost always know what movement instructions you'll have available to you. There is a lot of player interaction in a four person game (which often is lacking in RoboRally depending on number of players and factory layout).

The basic premise of RAMbots is to tag four colours in a certain order by programming your bot with up to five instructions. The instructions take the form of icehouse pieces placed in a line behind a player screen, pointing in the direction you wish your robot to move (that's right folks, no Robot Dance :/). All players reveal their program and the programs are executed instruction by instruction according to precedence -- the upside of which is that some players might finish their entire turns before others play their first instruction, provided the first player's instructions always have a higher precedence. Furthermore, you can add pieces to your "code pool" by ramming into other players -- and incidentally, you can tag colours by ramming into players of the right colour, as well.

All in all, it's a fun game which doesn't have any of the fun art and theme of Robo Rally, but benefits from a distillation of RoboRally's core mechanic.

You program your moves in advance, and can shoot or bash into other robots to steal instructions from their code pool. Great game, even if you're not a programmer.

Rather than have a list of pyramid games I want to play, I decided to focus on one game at a time. Either a game from Playing With Pyramids I haven't yet played, or the game with the most ratings on the Geek. RAMbots fit both criteria, I started plugging it to my pyramid playing friends. I got it to the table at the Buckeye Game Fest 2009. There is now only one game in Playing With Pyramids that I haven't yet played.

RAMbots is just like RoboRally, but with pyramids. The game takes place on a chessboard, with each player controlling a pyramid on the board, which is called a RAMbot. The other pyramids are used to program out the actions your RAMbot will take, with up to five moves programmed for each player on each turn. The interaction of the pieces means your program doesn't always do what you expect or want. In addition to the RAMbots, there are beacons on the board set up as targets. You are trying to run into either the RAMbots or the beacons in a particular color order; the first to succeed wins.

First logged play: 2009/10/04

Since my wife loves RoboRally, this was the game originally convinced me to start collecting pyramids. For various reasons, it's taken us this long to try it.

I was worried that having the different colors arbitrarily associated with different powers would be confusing, but it wasn't really. The game was much tighter and competitive than two-player RoboRally. I will certainly play again.

[i]Great game, light, but enough strategy to keep you interested. As others have pointed out, it's very similar to RoboRally.

================================

Definitely one of my favorite IceHouse games. Very similar to RoboRally, although it is better and worse in interesting ways. I find the programming more enjoyable, but the lack of space, extra gear components, and restriction on numbers of players is a downside. [i]
