2015 is the Bicentennial of the end of the Napoleonic Wars.

The Guard dies, it does not surrender

General Hill invites remnants of French Imperial Guard to surrender.

Supposedly said by Gen Cambronne, except it was likely he had already been captured, and denied saying it. Was it said at all and not an artifact of memoirs? With stenographers in woefully short supply on the battlefield who can be certain of what was said. However, if anyone uttered the phrase it was probably by Gen Michel.

Has any of us been to Waterloo?

My one and only kickstarter game. An interesting block wargame, nicely different from Julius Caesar and it's good to have one that works for three players.

I have the Avalon Hill edition with the nicely painted blocks.

This was my first block wargame, and remains my favorite, and most played.

In commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Waterloo. This wonderful game can be played with 2-3 players, each of which will command a faction. As it was in history, the onus is on the French player to attack the Allied armies before they can link up. This game has a wonderful balance of operational strategy and tactical battleboard play.

I've owned multiple copies of this game throughout the years but this is actually the first year that I've been playing the game. I'm very impressed with how well this game holds up over time.

We too played CG's Napoleon. We started the 18th, ended after midnight. In game terms we ended on the 22nd, with the Prussians losing from my French troop in the Battle of Brussels, some 2 days after Napoleon beat Wellington. With Brussels and Ghent under French control, Blucher had little options than to attack the slightly larger French force.
Start of the campaign

Early midgame. After a costly loss vs a Prussian minority, the French army suddenly wheels to the left to take on Wellington, out of Blucher's reach

End of game: with Wellington defeated and Ghent and Brussels under French control, the Prussians have little choice but to engage the larger French army. The Battle of Brussels on June 22 ends in a victory for Napoleon!

With this month being the 200th anniversary of the Waterloo campaign, I'm planning to bring this to the table later in the month. I have 3 editions of this game, including the most recent edition, but have only ever managed to play this game once. This month I aim to change that.

and I played our third game of this last week and, yes, I lost and Steve got to 3-0.

This time I was the French again and decided on Steve's last strategy of the bold, aggressive march through the centre, straight towards Brussels.

Steve showed me how to put a stop to that nonsense by massing an impressive multi national army in front of me.

I was a bit overawed by this and sent a large force north to try and outflank the Anglo-Allied army. This I achieved and, for one turn, managed to occupy Brussels with a small cavalry detachment. The Prussians, meanwhile, had smashed my other force in front of Charleroi and sent them reeling back over the Meuse. I sent my cavalry in Brussels off towards Liege to try and divert the Prussians.

These men occupied Liege and managed to attract the main Prussian army towards them. But time was running out. I converged on the Anglo-Allies at Waterloo...

.....

Before the battle of Waterloo occurred the Prussians ejected my men from Liege, ensuring the Prussian army would not collapse through attrition.

And then, I lost the Waterloo battle.

Another win for Steve - well played! I think we have reached some level of familiarity with this game after 3 plays although I can't quite figure out how to play it better than Steve!

We'll have to come back to this one...

For the first session, Paul took the French. My Allies kept fading back to consolidate and buy time. His forces took Ghent and later Brussels, forcing the Anglo-Dutch out of the game. However, he didn't have enough time to consolidate and focus on the Prussians and the Allies won due to elapsed time.

For the second game, I took the French and marched down the road to Liege, eventually forcing the Prussians out of the game. My other flank took Brussels, but late in the game and I was routed in a battle at Ghent. Just a couple of blocks shy of victory, and the Allies won on time.

I've never seen nor played the other editions of this game, but I am very pleased with the old second edition. Plays fast, tense, a very good game!

$3.99 - VV - Version pictured - complete - components look new - box is worn (as much as is expected for age)

I usually don't pick up war games, but the components made the game look interesting to me, 48 wooden blocks and some dice.(normally i open an old war game and there are 5000+ chits, and a rules manual half the thickness of the box !)....I will give this a try, if I don't like it I can always trade it.

and I played this game last night.

I have previously played this game twice before (years ago) so now have 3 games under my belt. I desperately want to love it but I need a few more games to get the famously deep and replayable system in my head.

I'm not sure Steve really liked it. We were learning it together. He was actually fairly surprised at the end when I said "you win". Nevertheless, having read several BGG articles we will probably replay this next week. I can see the potential.

So, last nights game: I was the French and decided to go the right flank route and attack the Prussians and try to occupy Liege. This I eventually did and, after some desperate battles, managed to destroy the Prussian army.

I also managed to occupy Ghent with a small cavalry force but the Anglo Allies were still left in a fairly strong central position and I had no time or troops left to deal with them: Allied win!

I love that this can be played in 1 sitting. Our usual glacial pace of play does not normally allow easy repeated practice. I think a game at this speed might let us get to that "expert" level I always think we should aim for.

The mixture of strategic map and tactical battle turns is also a great plus. I just need to convince Steve this could be great fun, even though there are no hexes. Especially as I am using this as an introductory block game to get him used to the next one: Commands & Colors: Napoleonics

and I played this again last night after my failure to win as the French with the right flank attack towards Liege.

Steve played the French this time. He tried an impressively direct strategy, massing most of his army in the centre and advancing straight for Brussels.

To be honest this was pretty intimidating and he looked unstoppable. The only thing I could think of with a reasonable chance to stop him was a gamble on one big battle.

Eight turns into the game, just after Steve had advanced from Soignes with a large force of blocks and four more nearby comprising all his infantry and guns, the Prussians had managed to march 12 blocks to Nivelle and 10 Allied blocks at Hal suported close by.

Confident that I could initiate a battle outnumbering the French eventually by nearly two to one, I advanced eight red blocks to Braine Le Compte and attacked.

I reinforced steadily but after an enormous and lengthy battle Steve had broken both Allied armies after suffering losses of 5 blocks. At the end of the battle the turn ended and I instantly lost the game as my armies dissolved.

I'm not sure what went wrong. The French army was left battered and ragged but it hung on. A very tough army to beat, and obviously well played by Steve as well.

We both considered the game was a little bit let down by the tactical process and rules. Despite our dissatisfaction with this part of the game the battle of Brain Le Compte certainly absorbed us, taking, as it did, about an hour of play.

I think perhaps I might have played the battle better, I am not sure how though. Maybe the directly confrontational course I took was the wrong one. Might just have to squeeze in another game of this, even at the risk of going down 3-0. shake
