This is one of Columbia's classics and still holds up decently well. The successive editions have changed it a lot, but the basic idea has remained constant: unified and stronger French facing more numerous but divided Allies, and it executes that asymmetry quite well. Each side has unique challenges, and the maneuvering is nuanced but key to the game. The Napoleonic Wars aren't my favorite topic, but this game gets me interested.

I only played two (2!) games this August, but one of them was new to me.

Napoleon: The Waterloo Campaign, 1815

image credit PzVIE (and The General)

We had a little time to kill before our scheduled game of Die Macher, so I asked my buddy Mark to run me through this classic. I thought we were playing really poorly, but I was overall impressed with the game and immediately thought I'd like to play again soon and probably get my own copy. It's a very straightforward game but you really do need to plan ahead and set up your attacks. Otherwise, you'll just be on the battle board chucking dice at each other and hoping for a lucky break.

We played on the old Avalon Hill edition and I thought it was handsome, sturdy, and presented the game state clearly. I imagine that's the version I'll try to pick up when I get my own copy.

This Avalon Hill game demonstrates the increased interest in historical war gaming and increased component quality. Blocks are used here instead of counters and dice direct movement. The first editions had an hour-long playing time, later editions adjusted that to a longer game. One might be able to locate a recent reprint.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is the somewhat popular Connect Four.

June gaming 6/14 - 6/24
At least I'm on a roll in June, and have gotten a few game nights.

Vegas Showdown - The diamond bonuses made the difference. I never quite had the right money at the time they came up.

The Resistance- The government forces did the job again

Quadropolis - Played using the expert rules. A spatial puzzle with a common draft, the expert rules seem to focus on optimization. There are lot of things to juggle laying out your scoring mat, also trying to juggle workers and energy so you can score your tiles. Looks to be a game of picking a couple of scoring routes and trying to milk them for all thee are worth. Collecting commercial buildings look to be the most powerful but the most difficult to manage. I did like the ideas behind the draft mechanism limited by the number you can pick and what was the last tile drawn.
While I enjoyed the game it one I don't need to own. However, I did find that it looked good on the table.

Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 5 – United Kingdom & Pennsylvania - Picked this up recently and had to bring it out.
Like many of the TTR expansions. Each add a twist to the basic game. In Pennsylvania the twist is collecting stock on the routes you build. The stock is another layer of end game bonuses, and can become quite significant, certainly it cannot be ignored. It does add to the value of the short routes for something other than complete routes or being a choke-point.
I liked this expansion I could see it becoming a favorite.
Haven't tried the UK yet, figure that is next week.

Ingenious - Our friend won on the 3rd tie breaker on of the closer ones I've seen.

Monopoly Deal Card Game - Finish up our game night both games went quickly sneaking in a win for the 3 property groups. In each a fist full of special action cards - especially the deal breaker was the deciding factor.

Mexica - A reasonably challenging area control game. I can see the mask trilogy reference. I've played Tikal and it feels similar, using action points and the split between move and build. However, there are difference, this is more straight up area control. I like how the areas are fenced off dynamically by the players as the game progress, the area control temples are fixed once built are fixed, some action points can be banked. It is interesting that the canals while fencing an area also provide the most efficient way of movement. There is some decision points as to whether to build more temples to control areas or found a new area to get its bonus.
The Iello reprint is a nice production with the resin temples, glad to see a classic Euro being reprinted, another game that looks good on the table
Personally I think I like Tikal better, but I would be willing to play Mexica again.

Napoleon: The Waterloo Campaign, 1815 - Got another wargame in on game night. I was the French player. The Allied player was very aggressive and didn't withdraw, so the Prussians and French had some early engagements. The Prussian 1st corps made a good showing at Charleroi inflicting excessive French causalities before withdrawing. They hoped to catch the French cavalry napping at Dinat which turned into a Prussian rout. The French split the allies by driving the 1st corps back at Wavre taking Namur as a base of operations. While the Guard and cavalry forced a British counter march by threatening Brussels, Napoleon was able to drive off the 4th Corps to take the Prussian supply base at Liege. June 21,22 saw two decisive battles at Brussels and Liege. Both the French and Prussians suffered devastating casualties as the Prussians drove the French out of Liege. The battle outside of Brussels saw the Guard crack the British center as the French flanks were collapsing, moments longer would have seen a French defeat. This also broke the British army giving the French a hard won victory in the campaign.
Quote:
Napoleon has humbugged me, by God; he has gained twenty-four hours' march on me.
Arthur Wellesley

Not only did I miniature wargame the Battle of Waterloo, but I also had the old block wargame, Napoleon, which was about the Waterloo Campaign. (I think I may still have it down in the basement.)

In 1972, Gamma Two Games published what I think is the earliest block wargame, Quebec 1759.* They were out of Vancouver, BC, which might explain why my friends and I had been exposed to them shortly thereafter. Incidently, Gamma Two Games is now Columbia Games out of Blaine, Washington.

Have you ever played a Gamma Two Games/Columbia Games block wargame? Or any other? If you have, what are your impressions of block wargaming?

And if you haven't played a block wargame, what are you waiting for?

*Stratego (1947) might be considered the pre-cursor to the block wargame.

Another old classic. I haven't been able to understand the French. I try to crush the Prussians and then turn to the Brits. I thought that is the way to play it, but the timer mechanism doesn't seem to make a French victory possible. I don't know... I like the combat system. The first edition uses few blocks. The third edition uses too many blocks. Did the fourth one finally get it right?

My second big game this month has been Napoleon the 1815 Campaign. We are just nearing completion of this game played via vassal PBEM and what a blast it has been. This game has worked really well in this format and although it has taken quite a few logs it has been a great contest. I am France and Edwin the Allies. Managed to fight and win at Waterloo and then a follow on battle for Brussels...which eventually took the Anglo-Dutch out of the field but not before a fair bit of damaged had been sustained to the French. The Prussians in the meantime had pretty much got away unscathed and it was only by a series of force marches which again cost the French quite dear that Liege fell to France. This action forced the Prussian army to engage Napoleon in battle for Liege. This has been a brutal battle which has swung to and fro....I don't think that I have ever had such a close game of this as the one now coming to a conclusion. Edwin has defended his position so very well and we are now both teetering on the brink of collapse and it is almost a matter of who blinks first. Our armies, if you can call them that are composed of 1 pip units which are very vulnerable to morale issues. The game swung back and forth with it looking like France had the battle in the bag only for the very next turn to have it turned around with Prussia poised to win. Currently the Prussians have 13 units left alive ... One more and they collapse. Meanwhile Napoleon fearing defeat and rout has started to exit his forces from Liege in the desperate hope that he can join up with his remaining force stationed near Namur. The French army is composed of single pip blocks. The French need 20 blocks to stay in the fight. Currently there are 15 blocks, 10 of which are not far from Liege. The rest are in the process of withdrawing from the battle which gives them about 25 blocks that could continue the fight. The field of battle is held by the Prussians with strong artillery on their left, a ragtag of single point units on their right and just two single point units in the centre. The only remaining French on the field are cavalry and they are all only single point units. Critically the French are contesting the Prussian centre and morale has yet to be rolled for the Prussians. If they fail the campaign is won for France, if they stand (again) then the French have lost the battle for Liege and the war continues once Napoleon can join up with his reinforcements....touch and go!

Another complication now is Kickstarter. Sometimes the Kickstarter edition has just minor changes over the regular store version, like being signed by the designer, or numbered, of having a few exclusive pieces -- such as we saw in the Napoleon Kickstarter, making a reprint possible, if unlikely. But in many cases the Kickstarter, through enthusiasm or miscalculation, becomes so economically unviable that a reprint is simply out of the question. Ogre Designer Edition will never be reprinted. It can't be. It's a good thing they made 12,000 -- which is a lot these days -- because those 12,000 are all that there will ever be. A quarter century from now, Mr. Jackson may very well be enjoying a comfortable retirement, except for bring pestered for a reprint of ODE.
