This was a contested victory for Patrick. The question was whether getting the Ice bonus happened before or after final scoring I believe. I just personally contest any victory Patrick gets.

The Martian

This had passed me by when it was in the cinema, so when my brother brought his bluray copy on our family vacation, and we discovered that our accommodation had a bluray player not just a dvd, I was excited to watch it!

I knew little to nothing about the film going in, except that it starred Matt Damon and was directed by Ridley Scott. I have in the past been a big fan of Scott's sci-fi work.. I loved Blade Runner and Alien, but had been disappointed with Prometheus. However I was not disappointed by The Martian, which turned out to be a very interesting and amusing story.

Matt Damon plays Mark Watney... a botanist on one of NASA's manned expeditions to Mars, who, during a freak Martian storm is left for dead on the red planet, while the rest of his crew abort their mission and head back to Earth. Of course Watney survives the storm and must find a way to survive on Mars until a rescue mission can be mounted. Naturally, with the disaster in space setting, the film has shades of Apollo 13.. though it is definitely it's own animal. There's plenty of drama as behoves this kind of film, and a healthy dose of humour too... Matt Damon is excellent in the lead role, and is ably supported by Jeff Daniels, Sean Bean and Chiwetel Ejiofor amongst others.

I also really liked the idea that the music for the film came from a single crew members collection of disco, with Damon's Watney commenting on her terrible taste in music, while continuing to listen to it.

I had a lot of fun watching The Martian. It was gripping and packed in plenty of humour that had me laughing out loud.

Ranking on my Flickchart
beats curse of the were rabbit
loses to Shakespeare in Love
beats Road to Perdition
beats Three Amigos
beats Ed Wood
beats Matrix : revolutions
loses to The Aviator
beats A Clockwork Orange
loses to The Aviator

164 out of 631.

I thought this deserved to be higher on my chart.. I think it got blocked by Shakespeare in Love, which I feel I ought to have higher.

I read the final book in the Red Rising trilogy, Morning Star. While it wasn't as good as the first two (book 2 was one of the best books I have read), it was still a great read, and a nice wrap up to the trilogy.

After Orleans Jill and I wanted to try to squeeze in a game with our friends Gary and Denise, so I ran and grabbed Mission Red Planet, even thought this is a game we used to own and I knew Jill had played it. It had been awhile for me though, and I was kind of in the mood to revisit an older game.

Took a few minutes to get back into the flow, but it all came back to me and we got into this pretty quickly, despite Jill's complaints that she remembered this and we should play something else new. She took it out on me by diverting my ships, femme-fataling my astronauts, or just blowing my stuff up when subtlety didn't work. I can't remember who won this in the end but I'm positive it wasn't me.

Gaming Group

Our weekly gaming group fell on May the Fourth so I decided to bring out some Star Wars games and other space-themed games. While waiting for the group to assemble and between games as we waited for other tables to finish up before starting bigger games we played Loopin' Chewie, game I bought during my "one for you, one for me" Christmas shopping trip to Toys R Us. A lot of fun with some great laughs and crazy aerial acrobatics.

Next, I had a chance to introduce Scott, Patrick and Richard to the terrific New York 1901. Patrick was out of the box pretty quickly and built his landmark building first, sneaking it in one turn before I could. I was able to build my landmark next. It wasn't the big scorer I wanted but it did keep more silver buildings in play for me. Then, Richard was able to build his landmark and Scott got shut out of building a landmark as none were left that would fit into one of his plots. I triggered the end-game by depleting the market for land. The game came down to end-game scoring. Scott scored a street majority and then took an extra 15 points for having 6 silver-level buildings in play at the end of the game. I took a street majority and 10 bonus points for having 5 silver buildings in play which was enough to give me with win.

Next, the four of us played Mission: Red Planet (second edition). This is a fun area control game with role selection. The fight for prime territory on Mars was fierce. Space ships were blown up and rerouted, Femme Fatales wreaking their havoc and astronauts dropping down from Phobos to overwhelm territories. I found it hard to get much of a foothold and cringed as my astronauts got killed. Patrick, Scott and Richard were able to get more astronauts down onto Mars. At the end of the game none of the Discovery cards had an impact. I was only able to partially fulfill one mission card and just missed out on my mission to have the most sylvanite. Richard just missed out on his second mission...to have the most astronauts on Mars. Patrick outpaced us all with a stack of ice VP chips a mile high and edged out Scott for the victory.

Next Richard, Sharon, Patrick, Bill, Wendy and I played Liar's Dice. Strangely enough it was the first time any of us played with an actual board instead of a piece of paper. It came down to Patrick and Richard, each with one die left. Patrick lied Richard into a corner and then took the win. We had terrific fun with some great table talk.

Lastly, Wendy, Bill, Steve, Sharon, Richard and I played Clubs, a trick taking game I enjoy because you can't have negative points. Wendy led the game from start to finish with Sharon and Steve tying for second, 10 points back. And....I didn't finish last.

Gaming with my Wife

Only got in one game with my wife this week and it was her first game of 7 Wonders: Duel. She is a bit of a 7 Wonders savant (especially relative to me) having done really well in her first few games of the original. She was aided, we think, by exchanging cards for too many coins early in the game and, later, by me completely forgetting about the "Urbanization" token I had earned. Still, great fun.

Solo Gaming

A quick solo game of Snowdonia on Monday. I randomly drew Train #3 which allows you to take one extra resource from the stock yard. The Weather seemed to fluctuate between sun and fog for most of the game and the non-player company advanced pretty slowly. In the end I had 169 points with 53 from Stations, 22 from Tracks and 44 from Contracts. Always a fun experience.

On Tuesday I had time for a couple of solo games. The first one I pulled out was Flash Point: Fire Rescue. I randomly drew the CAFS firefighter and Hazmat specialist to start and I used their special abilities to the max. Once the Hazmat was clear I switched out to the Paramedic. Next, I was able to largely contain the fire and switched out the CAFS firefighter to the Generalist. At that point the Fire decided to advance into hotspots and soon a good chunk of the building was covered with fire. Still, after finding 4 false alarms I was able to rescue my 7th victim with 7 cubes left but 10 hotspots on the board. As usual, I felt that even though I won, I was one or two turns from loss.

After Flash Point I snuck in a game of Onirim (second edition), a game I've improved a lot at. This time I started out well but, with 7 door cards gained the Dream cards came out fast and furious to quickly deplete the deck and leading me to lose.

A second game played on Thursday night ended in a win with about 10 cards left in the deck.

I snuck in a quick game of Baseball Highlights: 2045 before game group on Wednesday. It was an ugly affair as, after three buying rounds my New York team lost to the AI 4 games to zero. The margin of loss shrunk throughout the series (2-5, 2-4, 1-3, 5-6) with the last game stolen from me in the last inning.

Items owned:
- Mission: Red Planet, first edition, purchased from Crni Zmaj, Belgrade.

Description: Steampunk, space pulp, secret role selection, area control, area majority and area movement game with "take that" mechanic.
Weight: Light.
Number of players: 3 to 5. Best with 5.
Designer: Bruno Cathala, Bruno Faidutti.
Publisher: Asmodee.

Impression: It's a hidden gem, or at least it was before FFG published a reprint in 2015. Every player has a deck of characters, each character with the initiative, number of astronauts he places on ships and a special power. Characters are simultaneously selected by each player in secret and then called out loud by their initiative order, similar to Citadels, another Bruno Faidutti game. After the character ability is resolved and astronauts placed on rocket ships they are launched and landed on a designated area of Mars, the Red Planet. There are also secret objectives you can take, random discoveries which are also kept secret until the very end and a lot of intense turmoil and fighting for three type of resources until the last round where nobody can guess who could be the winner. It's a quick, easy, exciting, backstabbing game.

Likes: Simultaneous secret role selection. Steampunk Mars theme. Secret objectives. Pace of the game and majority scoring in which exponentially progresses: first in fifth round, then in eighth and lastly in the last round. Bonus of nine points for the player with most ice in the end (least worth resource).

Dislikes: Some discovery cards might be pretty unfair and imbalanced. The possibility for players to lose their turn. Randomness over planning.

Current status: Owned although thinking about the second edition which adds Mars' moon Phobos, event cards and sixth player.
