My brother-in-law very generously handed me a box of old Avalon Hill games the other day. There are some gems in here, many are first edition and pretty much all of them (save for Civilization) were largely un-punched.

The two games which I'm most interested in are Tobruk: Tank Battles in North Africa 1942 and this one. These two games are in fantastic condition, hell, the counters for Tobruk look BRAND NEW (and begging to be punched).

Anyway, I inventoried WS&IM, made sure there were no photos I could contribute to the BGG entry and then punched and clipped it. I found a rather poor scan of the "Wooden Ships for One" in the files section but a few days later I came across a UK site that had quality scans of old General magazines and now have a much easier to read copy in hand.

To try on my sea-legs for the first time I decided to go with Scenario 2, Ranger Vs. Drake May 2, 1778. John Paul Jones cruising British waters for opportunities to disrupt enemy commerce. He learned that the Drake had anchored in Carrickfergus harbor in North Ireland. Jones first attempt at the Drake had failed due to his crew's lack of experience. A month later, on May 2, he met her coming out of the harbor with a crack crew ready for action. Jones handily won the day, forcing the Drake to surrender in less than an hour after they engaged. It was John Paul Jones first success as a Captain.

I started out with the intention of playing both sides just to start getting the rules down but just as I was starting I changed my mind and decided to use the solo rules from the General. As it turned out this was probably not the best thing to do, as I was reading through the rules it became clear that they were designed for SOL (Ships of the Line) battles and the enemy movement charts did not take into account ships with a faster battle sail speed. I made due with what I had and arbitrarily assigned an extra movement to the Drake each turn. With the exception of Backing Sails (since it is used on the enemy movement chart) I laid off the advanced rules for this first run.

At first the Drake's movements took her away from the Ranger - as if she was trying to flee the eminent battle. After about 5 turns like this I started wondering if I was either using the movement charts wrong of if maybe it wasn't all I thought it was. Then on turn 6 she turned into me and we closed!

"Hold!" I was tempted to fire but the range was such that it would have been tough to do much damage and I'd waste my +1 initial broadsides bonus. Both ships are sloops, lightly outfitted and made for close quarters.

We closed again.

"Port, all sides, FIRE!!!"

The guns on both sides of the Drake were neutralized and her hull was badly damaged, taking some crew with it. The Ranger fared better, suffering a hit to her rigging but losing some crew in the firefight. Seeing my advantage, I reloaded for the next round, the Drake was all but dead in the water.

Being unable to fire, her guns disabled, the Drake came about. Narrowly missing each other we ended up in very close quarters and she tried to grapple me, surely wanting to fight hand to hand since she no longer had any teeth. The grapple roll failed and the Ranger peeled off another broadsides - a miss (gun hit but no guns to hit).

Finally on turn 9, the two ships had drifted apart, too far to grapple but close enough to score a final hit. The Drake suffered the final Hull hit as well as a hit to her rigging and losing half her remaining crew.

The Drake was sinking and immediately surrendered. Cpt. John Paul Jones had won the day (again).

I was glad to finally get a game back on the table, I had some vacation the first week of the month but ended up not getting a single game played in my time off (where did it all go??!?). Since I got the box from my brother-in-law I've spent more time looking over these games than playing anything so I was glad to finally get WS&IM in shape to play.

-----------------------------------
2nd engagement - Spring, 1782
British SOLs: Mars and Marlborough
French SOLs: Hercule and Neptune

I decided that in order to give the Wooden Ships for One rules a proper go I needed to play it as designed: for the #2 Ships of the Line. I also decided to try it out in a 2v2 scenario.

I pulled the ship information from Scenario 8 for both countries. I am playing the British and the French are running on autopilot. I incorporated the wing change rules but not much else from the advanced set (anchoring, stern rakes).

Currently the British have the French ships surrounded, such that the Hercule has no targets but the Neptune is getting some shots in on the Mars (her rigging is getting the worst of it). I've managed to do some damage to both ships but I have the Mars too far out to really get a good bead on the Hercule while I have the advantage of being out of her gun sights. I did manage a critical hit on the Neptune but the result was only cutting her anchor.

I'll post more as I progress...

thumbsup Unquestionably a classic war game from a classic war game company.
thumbsup Naval battles in the age of sail!
thumbsup Plenty of scenarios in the book plus I have a bunch to try from old General magazines as well as other variants. There are also rules for building your own included.
thumbsup The basic rules get you started fast, there are a lot of variables and charts and exceptions and such in the advanced rules but I've found that you can slowly incorporate some advanced concepts into your game without really taking anything away. This makes it easier to up the complexity without giving yourself a headache.
thumbsdown Movement is a bit brain-burny to learn, it's all relative to the wind so it seems being able to move around the board is a big plus to view your ship at different angles. At this point I can't even imagine how much work it would be to manage a large fleet! (I can't wait to try!)
thumbsdownthumbsup The solo rules are a bit restrictive since they were designed with only SOLs in mind, the enemy movement charts are massive - covering every iteration based on a chart which determines your ship's attitude in relation to the enemy ship. However, I'm quite glad to have a solo option that doesn't require me to play both sides.

Given that I'm playing in at least half a dozen games of this pretty much all the time, I can almost do a cut and paste for this game every month.

Today's screen shot is from Turn 49 of "Breakout from Havana" a fictional battle between a Spanish/French squadron vs an English squadron. In honor of the game's background, I am writing this while drinking a Mojito made with Havana Club rum.

This screenshot shows one of the less fun aspects of larger Wooden Ships battles. First off, unless you can cross the T or figure out another way to concentrate overwhelming firepower on a portion of the enemy fleet, it can take a l-o-n-g time to make a ship strike. Linear battles at long range just don't cause very much damage. If you look at historical battles fought using linear tactics, they often had indecisive outcomes. Yay for a game mirroring history. To continue this sidebar just a bit longer, Nelson and his line breaking tactics were so amazing because they could and did bring about heretofor unseen decisive battles.

The other thing this screenshot shows, is that there is no easy or automatic way to call the game once it is hopeless for one side. The French/Spanish are toast, but it's taken 49 turns to get here, now we have to chase down and finish off Auguste. That might take another 20 turns, and it WILL take lots of turns unless the Auguste surrenders (but there is nothing in the game short of him striking that will COMPEL an end to the game).

However, as long as you are mentally prepared for most of the action in any given battle being front loaded with a very long tail of mostly inactivity, youplay.it is a great place to get your WSIM fix.

Last month I started playing WSIM at http://www.youplay.it Very simple interface, it takes less than a minute to enter a move. I usually have a dozen games going at once, sign up for as many or as few as you'd like. No fees.

Fleet actions with multiple skippers are chaotic, to say the least. Even with a chat box to coordinate moves, most captains go their own way. You can sign up for games where you are the only player on a given side.

This is from a 2 player, 3 ships each game I am about to finish:
