Best Game

Probably no chance to win here, but at least the first nominee in this category:

XIANGQI

Compared to chess:
- Bigger (90 points instead of 64 squares)
- better (more original movements, surprising twists, rules not changed for a thousand years. And the cannons! And the deadly view from the generals! And ...)
- faster (oh yes, no dull pawns stand in your way and you are right in the middle of gaming!)
- more (played by the most people in the world, more fun!)
- cheaper (build your own set for nothing)

Compared to all the modern stuff:
Wait another thousand years, and we`ll see, what`s still here.

The General stays in his fortress, togehther with his advisors / guards.

So far, so good.

But assume, he is in check, and there is no way out of it but by leaving the fortress? This is checkmate then, bro`!

Would a general not leave his fortress if otherwise he`d be dead!?

And the other one:

It is forbidden that the generals have free sight to each other. There has to be at least one piece in between them. Always! It`s called the "lethal view"!

Do generals drop dead if they see each other through a telescope?

Hmmm ... these ancient chinese folks have more secrets we should draw from the scripts ...

From 301-325:

306. XiangQi - I just don't get around to playing two player abstracts anymore.

317. Fire in the Sky: The Great Pacific War 1941-1945 - See every other monster wargame.

318. Eurorails - I've played Iron Dragon and really enjoyed this. Perhaps I'll give Eurorails a go next.

324. Masons - This is the kind of game that I'll probably pick up in a trade. Just waiting for that to happen...

Every photo I ever submitted was submitted in 2006. (Not terribly many.)

But I particularly like this one, taken in China of the coupla old fellers playing on the footpath because the (long) row of Chinese chess tables were already taken. Especially with the little kid scooting around admiring all the games.

Interestingly, although there is still a fairly strong respect in China for players of various traditional games and card games, it seems to me that any other games tend to be frowned on.

Chinese Chess. $.99

This is the second version of this I've come across. This one actually said "Shong Chee" on the box. Inside is a nice wood box0/board (with magnetic fastner) and 32 bakelite pieces.

But instead of the traditional chinese characters on the pieces, there are: President, Congess. Air Force, Missles, etc.

Not the edition pictured.

I bought a copy of this in Hong Kong because it looks great on our table. I actually know how to play the game, since my dad taught me the game when I was young (we're a Chinese family living in Holland). I do expect the game just being set up on the table and nobody playing it.

I did sort of explain it to my girlfriend, but right now, I don't expect her to pick it up. Maybe she'll try it out just to indulge me. Maybe next time my dad visits, we'll sit down for a game (and get my butt kicked...). Or maybe it will just sit on the table as a decoration

It was one of the first sessions with my son, then 8 years old. We had played "just for fun" several times, discussing the moves, when he required a serious game without so much talking. In fact he wanted to beat me "real", that was obvious. So we started on my home-made board with icons on the back of the characters:

I was quite a bit inattentive, and my son needed a lot of thinking time, but for me it was nice to see him working so wholeheartedly on his triumph, yet I was sure neither to let him win easily, nor that he was a true danger.

I realized he played surprisingly good, and I had to labor a lot to escape his attacks. Then, after thinking for about ten minutes, he said, not even looking at me: "You`ve lost." I couldn`t see his point and had made my own plans in the last ten minutes. He made his move with one of his cannons, a move I had foreseen, and I made my move instantly. He still not looked at me, saying: "Okay ..., I said, you`ve lost." I stared at the battlefield. He explained me his next move and my possible reactions and why they didn`t make any sense, because of his doubled cannon and the "deadly view" of his general, then possible because of his next move ...

My son showed me my hubris and the limits of "education".

I`ve lost and was happy. People with children understand why, others possibly not.

The art of pondering persists in modern China.

Even though Chinese urban culture is more competitive, more stressful than I see in Australia, still the tradition of fully contemplating your next move is appreciated. Your opponent considers you worthy of their utmost concentration... be complimented!

X - A game commonly called Chinese Chess saves the letter 'X' from almost total obscurity.

Rank: 288 -- With only 53 games, it still managed to beat out 'Q', which isn't too bad. Then again, finishing outside the top 250 isn't that great.

Fun fact: In his algebraic treatise Al-Khwarizmi used the Arabic word for "thing" (shay) to refer to the the unknown quanity that was being sought. When his work was translated in Spain, the Arabic word 'shay' was translated as 'xay', since the letter 'X' was pronounced as sh in Spanish. In time this word was abbreviated to' X', the universal algebraic symbol for the unknown quantity in an algebraic equation.

Don't you dare call this a chess variant. Chinese geeks were flipping these tables over at least 2,500 years before Chess became a local favorite in Europe. XiangQi (pronounced QiangXi) is similar to chess, except it has elephants, cannons and incomprehensible pictographs.
