Tori Shogi is a 18th-century Shogi variant played on a 7x7 board with pieces named after birds. It's difficult to get, at least outside Japan - there is a guy in the UK who makes sets, but they're rather expensive. The set I am trading is one of those.

The board is blue vinyl. The pieces are wooden. (The picture in this entry is of this set.) The board and pieces are in very good condition (and there is an extra Sparrow piece). The rules (in English) have minor wear. The tube has one end taped shut and the game name taped to it (probably not original). The board has a tendency to curl a bit at the edges, but the picture was taken about five minutes after taking it out of the tube - if you reverse-roll it a bit it will lie pretty flat.

ETA: I uploaded a picture of my set to the game page, and am using it in this entry now. The board is blue vinyl. It tends to curl a bit at the edges, but that picture was taken about five minutes after taking it out of the tube - if you reverse-roll it a bit it will lie pretty flat. The pieces are made of wood.

This shogi vairant from the modern area is interesting because the pieces are immediately in direct conflict. This makes the initial constructionof a defensive castle formation much more difficult.

The BGG entry for this game includes a rules link.

The bird-theme of the pieces and the usefulness of a 7x7 board to any gamer makes this worth a purchase perhaps but I must admit that for now I play this using pieces adapted from a standard Shogi set on the center of the shogi-ban [thus ignoring the outer edge of spaces].

This is believed the first game in the Shogi family to have used a drop-mechanism. This keeps all pieces in play throughout the game so that the level of the game's complexity never diminishes, just as in the more familiar standard Shogi. Personally, I find the immediately adjacent starting position of the pieces for the two players does not allow one to develop a defensive position. Both players are similarly handicapped, but I think the game the poorer for it nonetheless. That being said, this is still a game extremely similar to standard Shogi with all the good which that implies.
