Does it count if one goes around being all Mexican and stuff, eating tacos pretty much almost every day of the year?

This will definitely hit the table soon, just waiting for it to arrive. It may be the "holiday game" - SWMBO and I are away for a few days this month, and she has suggested I bring a game along for a rainy day ! Naturally, I'll stretch that to two or three games...

The Mexican-American War, Texas.
Battle of Palo Alto, May 8th, 1846.

Mariano Arista commanding the Mexican Army del Norte (Me)
General Zachary Taylor commanding the USA Army of Occupation (Kimmo).

Palo Alto is an odd battle for the series, because terrain is of little use to defenders, and really only slows and channels movements. The center of the battlefield is dominated by long grass, which slows the army down to a crawl. The roads are narrow enough to not be much use for an advancing army, and are too far off to the sides anyways.

The first turn, Mexico won initiative and advanced to position. Having played this scenario last week, I knew to be a bit cautious in my advance. I advanced the army into the tall grass and positioned my artillery with them. My cavalry brigades followed the roads, readying for a charge if the US infantry advanced the next turn. I drew to activate again, which forced me to position myself further forward again. On the US activations, minimal artillery shelling inflicted minor damage and the US army proceeded forward.

The second and final turn threw caution to the wind. My cavalry charged through the woods on the left to engage the US dragoons, and managed to rout them through well timed fire and flanking shock attacks. My lancers combined their charge, forcing heavy losses against an infantry brigade, and eliminating a stack of cavalry. The results did not allow further shock, so the successes bogged down in chaos for the remainder of the game. The main attack came in the center, with heavy fire exchanged on both sides, and generally favorable shock results. However, with my units movement halved in attack orders and then halved again in the long grass, I wasn't able to follow up on my early successes. The US ended up getting three activations in a row at the end of the turn, and were able to inflict heavy losses through fire and shock. A few favorable results tilted the battle greatly in their favor, and Kimmo successfully exploited weak units with heavy fire from small arms as well as artillery.

At the end of the turn, we rolled, and the Mexican army was forced to give up the field, much to Kimmo's surprise. The US was close to also withdrawing, which would have granted me victory. Alas, I eliminated few units, but disrupted many, while the US were able to eliminate some large infantry regiments for many points.

It was an excellent session, and I'm glad to get to return to the battle again. It's difficult playing the Mexican army because of their heavy penalties for firing, so it often seemed a craps shoot in the center lines when shocking. I'm glad I tried playing it safe, but should have been even more cautious methinks.

I'm looking forward to our session next week, where we'll play the follow-up battle.
