At the end of Rush's 2112 song "Grand Finale", somebody announces "We have assumed control" and the song ends.

Were the powers assuming control better or worse than the Priests of the Temples of Syrinx?

RUSH

I have taken my time getting to this word; can't rush a good thing. The uses of the four letters 'rush' fall into two groups. The first is the word for describing plants that grow in marshes and swamps which have cylindrical stems, and are often used to make seats in chairs or mats. Such rushes were also strewn on the floors of medieval castles, in an attempt to cover the human and animal excrement, food scraps, and other forms of noxious wastes that accumulated in those places.

The second broad sense of the word rush (verb and noun) has to do with action, motion. The verb to rush means to act or move quickly or impetuously ("fools rush in where heroes fear to tread"). It can mean to dash forward, as in an attack. In American football, to rush means to run the ball rather than pass it. As an intransitive verb, to rush can mean to surge or to flow. You can rush something too, as in transport it quickly ("they rushed the patient to the hospital") or to take rapid action on something ("the PATRIOT Act was rushed thru Congress"). To rush out has the meaning of to produce something quickly ("the book was rushed out to take advantage of the news, and had a lot of errors").

Rush as a noun has some similar concepts. Rush can be a sudden forward motion, a running play in American football, a rapid descent upon goal in hockey, a surge, frenzied or hurried activity ("the lunch rush started at noon"), sudden demand for something, a quick onslaught, a quick mass migration (think Gold Rush), or a sudden stimulating rush of exhilaration (possibly caused by ingesting, inhaling, or injecting substances...). U.S. college fraternities and sororities hold recruiting parties called rushes. The first unedited prints of a movie are also called rushes.

Rush as a modifier is something that needs quick action (like a rush job), or something characterized by quickness and business (rush hour, where traffic might not be quick after all). Rush also pops up in English as both a family and a given name.

The swampy and the rapid rushes have unrelated etymologies. The marsh plant rush goes way back and derived from Middle English resc or rusch.

The verb to rush arrived in the 14th century from Anglo-French russher and Old French ruser (to dodge, repel). The noun came later in the century. Rush as in "gold rush" was first used in North America in 1848; "rush hour" recorded 1888. Rush as in a surge of pleasure comes from the 1960s.

Fun Fact: Today is the 60th birthday for Geddy Lee, the lead singer and bassist for a little band out of Canada name of Rush...

Clockwork Angels.

Rush is one of my all time favorite bands.

My son had never been to a rock concert so for his birthday I got him and I tickets to the Clockwork Angels show at the Honda Center. What a better way to break him into the rock scene that with this show.

This was in November and this show was for it's Clockwork Angles tour. Somehow, this album had gone under my radar (probably cause I work so damn much) and I had not heard any of the songs.

It was a great concert to be sure and they played about three hours in three distinct sections. The first section, Rush played a lot of their long time favorites. I like that they opened their show with a lot big hits including opening with on my favorite songs "Subdivisions". After a break they came back to the 2nd part with a large part of this album. While I had not heard any, I was really surprised at the new material. I was impressed with how good they still sounded. Finally, they came out to an encore with all their biggest hits.

I was intrigued by the new stuff (they played the whole 2nd section with a string section behind them) and went off to find the new album to give it a better listen.

I must say, after at least 30-40 full album listens through, (and many re-listens to single songs) I am thoroughly impressed with this albums musicianship and lyrics. As with any great album my favorite song has switched many different times in that span. I don't want to get into too many details about the songs, but the trio of tracks 7, 8, and 9 (Seven Cities of Gold, The Wreckers, and Headlong Flight)are some of the finest songs on the album and I look forward to this section every time. It finishes up with beautiful track about life in "The Garden". This is a conceptual album that tells a story and does it well. I am still finding arrangements in the song or lyrics that still hit me as awesome.

Track List:
1. "Caravan" 5:40
2. "BU2B" 5:10
3. "Clockwork Angels" 7:31
4. "The Anarchist" 6:52
5. "Carnies" 4:52
6. "Halo Effect" 3:14
7. "Seven Cities of Gold" 6:32
8. "The Wreckers" 5:01
9. "Headlong Flight" 7:20
10. "BU2B2" 1:28
11. "Wish Them Well" 5:25
12. "The Garden" 6:59
Total length: 1:06:04

It was great to seem them live and coupled with my sons first concert it was a night to remember. It was his birthday so I'm glad I sprung for the great seats, tour t-shirts, and the very nice RUSH hoodie for my son.

There were some points on the album that sounded muddled to me, but it turns out that I was just listening to the album on my crappy car stereo and speaker on my drive to work. Do your self a favor if you get this and listen to it with good headphones or speakers.

If your a Rush fan like I am and have not heard this album, give it a listen, you might be surprised as I was.

"Red Barchetta" by Rush

The fictional Red Barchetta is the star of Rush's dystopic tale about a future where personal vehicles are banned...

My uncle has a country place
That no one knows about
He says it used to be a farm
Before the Motor Law
And on Sundays I elude the eyes
And hop the Turbine Freight
To far outside the Wire
Where my white-haired uncle waits

Jump to the ground
As the Turbo slows to cross the borderline
Run like the wind
As excitement shivers up and down my spine
Down in his barn
My uncle preserved for me an old machine
For fifty odd years
To keep it as new has been his dearest dream

I strip away the old debris
That hides a shining car
A brilliant red Barchetta
From a better vanished time
I fire up the willing engine
Responding with a roar
Tires spitting gravel
I commit my weekly crime

Wind
In my hair
Shifting and drifting
Mechanical music
Adrenaline surge...

Well-weathered leather
Hot metal and oil
The scented country air
Sunlight on chrome
The blur of the landscape
Every nerve aware

Suddenly ahead of me
Across the mountainside
A gleaming alloy air car
Shoots towards me, two lanes wide
I spin around with shrieking tires
To run the deadly race
Go screaming through the valley
As another joins the chase

Drive like the wind
Straining the limits of machine and man
Laughing out loud with fear and hope
I've got a desperate plan
At the one-lane bridge
I leave the giants stranded at the riverside
Race back to the farm
To dream with my uncle at the fireside

I do try to push my comfort level on the time I take, and resist the temptation to make an even more thorough analysis than I feel I need to in order to believe I can learn something from my move. There are certainly times when, immediately after moving (and before any opposing player has responded) I see why I should have done something differently, because I failed to take the time to double-check first. However, this happens infrequently enough that I am still willing to forego time-consuming double-checks out of respect for everyone else's time.

I still play more slowly than average.

Unmistakable first few notes, recognised world wide. Nowhere close to their best song (in my humble opinion), and Tom Sawyer might be more famous, but Spirit of Radio is more unique and distinctive.

You'll recall my excitement at discovering that the Rush tour went through Oberhausen on the Friday night? Well, Christian Becker (who turns out to be Uwe Rosenburg's #1 playtester) got me tickets for the show. Then he downloaded R30 and decided that he wanted to go too. Then one of my friends couldn't go to Essen, so we had a spare ticket. I'm sitting in the Jung game room, talking to some Brits who are playing Hamburgum (me no like), and I say, who wants to go see Rush at Oberhausen tomorrow? I will, says an unknown Brit to my right, who I think is Peter Hetherington. He slaps his money down, he gets his ticket next day and we plan to go down to the station by 7pm and nip over to Oberhausen. Why are you going by train, says Christian. I'll drive you over.

I'll skip the driving bit. What you see from the pavement is real. gulp

It was in a smallish arena, with no seating on the main floor. And get this, they have a bar on the arena floor! You can buy beer right on the concert floor. And they had hawkers selling beer, cola, ice cream and BREAD!

So Peter and me took the left side for the first half, then switched sides for the second. Christian couldn't take the full effect up close and nipped to the back after a few songs, but he really liked them. Apart from some stuff in the setlist that weren't my favourites, it was a fantstic show. Very tiring standing up for 4 hours, but great stuff, as you can see.

I have to get a better camera. My old Ixus is crap. People in front of me were holding up their phones, with bigger, sharper pictures than on mine! The filmed bits had German surtitles, and the chicken man was replaced by a confused Blue Man in the second half. They are in residence in a nearby theatre and Christian reckoned he just came over after his show was over.

Thank you very much Christian! You are too modest, you made it a very special Essen for me this year. And thanks Peter for taking the ticket off me and letting me buy some more games.

Rush is a territory game which is played with a Go set. Any size board with an odd number of rows and an odd number of columns can be substituted for the Go board. Play begins on an empty board, each player takes possession of a colour of stone, and places them on the board according to the rules until the board is full. The player with the most stones in the end wins.
