At 50% off! this was one I decided to gamble on. It's the first I own from the East Front series and depending how I like it, I did eventually get Barbarossa: Crimea as well (above). There's a lot going on in this game with all the detail, but lots to like as well from tutorial scenarios to the monster game. Very comprehensive.

Alas, after 35+ years in business, Bridgetown Hobby is closing. It was a landmark place for gamers, model builders, and other gaming hobby items. The owners retired and sold the building.

So at 50% off! this was one I decided to gamble on. It's the first I own from the East Front series and depending how I like it, I may eventually get Barbarossa: Crimea as well. I played this twice with Micah. Definitely the best way to get into GMT's East Front Series, but not sure I can recommend it. The sequence of play has like 100 points (not an exaggeration...there are almost that many total steps, many get skipped from turn to turn, but still) which very effectively breaks down the game into steps that can be marched through without constantly wondering what to do next. Still...the size and required time to really get a decent play this this in is a bit too staggering for me to consider.

I liked it and rated it an 8, because it is a good game. Maybe I'll try more later, but my ultimate take-away was to cancel my pre-orders for Army Group North and Army Group South from GMT because there is more game in the box right now than I can enjoy so I don't need to own more of a good game I'm not playing.

I'm about to play To Rostov scenario with my regular wargaming opponent a bit later this month. It's a pretty big scenario and will take two or three sessions (yes, we're on holiday). At the moment I'm rereading the rulebook just to make sure I remember everything.

Micah and I played through the Battle of Sumy again. I took the Germans this time and did a lot of dashing and grabbing of the victory cities rather than trying to advance along a broad front. Supply wasn't an issue so I figured I'd go for it. However, every battle was incredibly attritional and by the end of turn 2 I had already lost 6 steps...Soviet victory.

A pair of counters were errata'ed and made available through GMT's house organ magazine, C3I. I was able to obtain those counters from a wargamer who isn't into the East Front Series.

After trying unsuccessfully to get my head around the rules when this first came out (my first acquisition in the series), I decided to give it another go recently.

Soloing it until I have the basics down pat, but managed to snare a copy of Barbarossa: Army Group South, 1941 for a mate, and hopefully then we can both get into it more.

Surprised at how much easier the rule-set reads now. When I first had a go a few years ago I was heavily into OCS and perhaps my brain is unable to handle too many rule-sets covering the same theatre without rebelling.

Micah came over this afternoon and we gave this one a go. We had played Barbarossa: Crimea before, but not for months. So, I had set up the Battle of Sumy, scenario 4, and we just fooled around with it to relearn everything. Poor Micah couldn't roll better than a 7 on any combat related roll in the whole scenario. He didn't take many losses, but didn't really deal any either. Even 5-1 attacks just didn't go anywhere. We're going to replay this one next time (possibly next week), but with the sides switched. Better intro scenarios than Crimea for sure. How well does the Rostov Redeemed Scenario 1 work?
