On Tuesday, it was my groups first foray into Kingsport. I was Leo Anderson, and we also had Gloria Goldberg, Joe Diamond, and Charlie Kane vs. the tentacled Nyogtha. Well things didn't get off to a good start when Gloria's first encounter was to fight a monster. And due to Nyogtha being the Ancient One, she had to fight Nyogtha's Tentacle. She didn't have any weapons yet, and if you don't beat the tentacle in two tries, you get devoured. So that was the end of Gloria, as well as the relationship cards for the two people on either side of her. Someone getting devoured also caused me to fail my personal story.

But then we thought we had a glimmer of hope, since three of us all had plenty of clues, (and the new Jenny Barnes had some good stuff she brought along with her). We got one gate sealed, and then more trouble started. The environment card pops up that doesn't allow you to seal gates, only close them. And gates were popping up fast and furious, so we had no choice but to close instead of waiting for a new environment to replace it.

Then more bad luck it, a rumor that forced you to get rid of items to pass it, otherwise our stats would be frozen in place. We certainly didn't have enough items on us to pass, nor the time to get to the location needed to remove the rumor, so we set our stats to what we wanted them to be for the rest of the game. It didn't matter much though, the environment never went away, so new gates kept replacing the ones we closed and eventually it was time for a face to face fight against the Ancient One.

Nyogtha's combat modifier is ridiculous, unless you can survive him pulling you underground. We didn't have much in the way of weapons, and our dice rolls were not working out, so we lost in round two of the fight without a single scratch being placed on him. Welcome to Kingsport!

On Wednesday, a friend stopped by and we played Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation. It was his first time playing, and we played 4 games, two as each side. We each won once and lost once per side. I have been dominating my friends and wife at this game, so it is good to finally find someone that provides a worthy match!

That's it for this week, we'll see what next week brings.

Game 1: If Only They Hadn't Stolen His Cuffs
Tony Morgan (the Bounty Hunter) vs. Glaaki

It was a Dark and Stormy Night...
- Tony lost his handcuffs to a pick-pocketing ring even before his first turn. Not auspicious.

Greatest Hits
- Tony avenges the loss of his handcuffs by hacking the limbs off a helpless Leng Spider ambling downtown. I smell blood money here.
- "What's the deal with this 'King in Yellow' book anyway?" asks Tony on his tenth unsuccessful attempt to read it. "If only I was literate."
- Tony Morgan steals a spirit vessel from Nephrem-Ka after waling on one of his cultists. "Now whose soul is unworthy, huh?" he asks.
- Tony gains an unfortunate addiction to add to his depression. However, thanks to a rumor of mistrust, his focus is going to be zero anyway.

And in the End...
- A sad end to the adventures of Tony Morgan, bad-ass monster killer. He ended up facing down Glaaki armed only with a simple cross.

NOTES:
(He very nearly sealed enough gates, even with a Mythos every turn.)

Game 20: The Little Things
Wendy Adams (the Urchin) vs. Eihort

Step up to the Streets
- "Ya gotta grow up sometime," Wendy's poppa said before he left. "Why not now, when your ma's in the loony bin and I'm off hunting Eihorts?"
- It was a hard life in the alleys of Arkham with only a cavalry saber and her amazing marksman skills to protect her, but she was a survivor.
- Wendy's only pals were the drunks at Hibb's--notoriously bad card players all--and while she won their dough, she also heard strange rumors.

Risky Maneuvers
- "There's a tapestry in the Unnamable," a drunk revealed. "Can reach through to touch another world. I tried it. Problem was, it ate my arm."
- Recklessly curious, Wendy sneaked into the Unnamable, but found herself unscathed as she touched the alien landscape and sealed the breach.
- Emboldened, Wendy explored the other scary house of Arkham, where the witches lived, but ran in terror as its very walls breathed her name.

The City in the Cave
- Entering the Black Cave and touching a cave painting, she had a vision of a distant city filled with conical aliens who buzzed about Eihort.
- She realized she was no longer in the cave, but in the alien city, its non-Euclidean alleys no home for a human urchin, her sanity slipping.
- Scrambling from the cave as it crumbled closed behind her, alien terrors fled Wendy's mind as though nightmares, though terrors lay ahead.

Fancy Things, Simple Things
- One of her drunk friends, a janitor at Misk U, offered aid. "One of them thar thingamajigs the faculty gives at Chrissmas. A sword a'glory."
- No sooner was she dual wielding swords, than the Abyss opened beneath Wendy. She heard the cackle of Eihort, "See how you like this, girl."
- Yet in this darkest hour, Wendy took comfort in the little things. "Yeah, the mundane joys in my life, like my cavalry saber right here!"
- "That's right, sweetie," said a familiar voice. "That's why I gave you that saber. To keep you happy when I couldn't." "Poppa!" cried Wendy.

Dreaming Detours
- "Can't stay, kiddo," he said. "I've got somethin' important to do to stop the Red Tide..or the Eihorts, whatever is going on. I don't know."
- "It's OK, poppa," said Wendy. "You go. I think I can help out. Eihort kept talking in my head, so I think I need to face him in my dreams."
- But her dreams proved perilous, lured by golden cities she never found and driven mad by the meeping of ghouls in the tunnels. "Meep, meep."
- Lost for a time, she returned to dreams, seeing a man weep over a marble statue and robbed of her saber by tiny blue men, a sad loss indeed.

The Secret
- "No, sweetie, it was never the saber that mattered, but the pendant," her father told her as she woke. "It can seal the gap between worlds."
- With a bit of blood and brain matter, Wendy shut Eihort out of the world for good. "Now can we get momma out of the asylum?" "Sure, kiddo."

NOTES:
(A lot of fun, and a breeze. Too easy probably with my solo variant to play using Wendy, but a good time. Also, the "Eihorts" is was I call the brood tokens, so I couldn't resist throwing that into the story as her poppa's obsession.)

Game 21: I Know Gun-Fu
Lily Chen (the Martial Artist) vs. Abhoth

Balance, Grace, Serenity, Whately
- Balancing herself on her fingertips and kicking down brick walls were second nature to Lily, but she had never faced a challenge like this.
- The grand masters had told her, "Our ancient foe goes by 'Wizard Whately.' Magic will not affect him." Damn good thing Lily had a tommy gun.
- But Whately was only the beginning of something worse. Using powers she had gleaned from the American natives, Lily went on a vision quest.

Mental Strain
- In her minds eye, she saw gates opening all over Arkham, like gaping mouths leading to vicious, churning other worlds. Opening far too fast.
- Lily followed all her visions across the city, ducking silently into safe havens to watch alien horrors from afar, learning what she could.
- Her sanity tortured, Lily fled to the asylum hoping a doctor could aid her. "You're new to Arkham, aren't you?" the doctor asked. "Bwahaha."
- Once he saw she offered cold hard cash, the doctor was ready to help. "This will go a long way to helping me pay for that trip to Carcosa."

Waiting for You-Know-Who
- "Shoggoths everywhere," the doctor sighed, putting down the paper. "If only Superman were...you know...real." Lily mused, "Maybe I will do."
- "Balance, Grace, ... that other thing," chanted Lily as she planted her fists into the side of the shoggoth, sending it to a pathetic death.
- "Listen, lady," said Deputy Dingby. "This is a police station, not a sewing circle. We got important cases to solve: like where's my lunch?"
- Finding no help from the cops, Lily had to face the gugs alone with only a tommy gun. Thankfully, the masters had taught her to use it well.

Cultists Convene
- The doctor showed Lily the cultist's victim. "Look what they did to this guy! I may be crazy, but this? This is crazy crazy, if you get me."
- "Curse you!" the cultist spat at Lily before the church. "We were to summon Glaaki, but your interference has instead brought forth Abhoth!"

Destiny
- Mundane illusions torn asunder, the truth lay bared before her. She had choice to fulfill her destiny, hearing, "Use the tommy gun, Lily."
- "This is it!" cried Lily as a hail of bullets sent the devil back to its distant hell. "I did what Superman couldn't. I saved the world."
- "It was a team effort," whispers of her ancient masters reminded her. "Who taught you to use that gun?" "And don't forget your doctor pal."

NOTES:
(Not a big fan of old Abhoth. It's hard to win by sealing gates, so it usually comes down to a fight. Fortunately no one is better at fighting Abhoth than Lily, and she beat him up good...with her tommy gun. Sigh. So much for martial arts.)

Game 28: The Approaching Eyes
Luke Robinson (the Dreamer) vs. Yibb-Tstll

It's Hard to Find a Friend
- Winds kicked up again, Luke shuddering in the corner of a dream. He was terribly, utterly alone, and in desperation cried out for a friend.
- His call was heeded, the Bloated Woman before him, offering a glass bauble to help him fathom ancient magic, but friendship she offered not.
- He camped in the nightmare, and the gug came, hardly a friend either. Overwhelmed with illness, he was lost between worlds, even more alone.
- He woke in some unnamed place, but not alone. The house crumbled as he fled it to the streets, wiping his brow and panting, still alive.
- Nightgaunts yet assailed him while awake, screeching Yibb-Tstll. He thrust a dream spear through one, finding it fleshier than he expected.
- Their master clearly feared him now, sending goat creatures to seduce him back into lusty reverie, but he held fast to the spear and fought.
- "There are no friends out there," thought Luke. "I am alone against the nightmare. Against the all seeing eyes." Far off, he saw her blink.
- "You saved us!" wept the students he rescued from the fire, but Luke was undeterred. He knew it was another of her distractions for him.
- "I know how you saved those students. Magic, Luke," said Carl Sanford. "We need your skill. Join us." But Luke declined, friendless always.

Reclaimed Heritage
- "Her eyes are getting brighter," Luke said over the grave of his father. "I should have listened to you and joined the Dagon priesthood."
- So Luke went to R'lyeh, finding himself studied by the baleful forces there, but not found wanting. Perhaps at last he had found his allies.
- "Of what use is a single thread of sanity in such a place as this?" challenged the high priest. "I have no lack of will," countered Luke.
- As Arkham dreamed of his sunken city, Luke returned renewed and ready to face the nightgaunt goddess, when the nightgaunt he slew came back.

Mind Games
- "You never left R'lyeh, Luke," said the nightgaunt. "You were always there and always meant to be. Stay, and leave Arkham to Yibb-Tstll."
- "No, I am still in Arkham," growled Luke, his mind fighting the nightmarish twists and warps of the landscape, sealing the sunken city away.
- "You should have stayed underwater, Luke," she whispered in the flapping haze about him. "I'd have spared you then. But now, you must fade."

NOTES:
(This one went south quickly and then lingered at the edge forever, just never ending until of course it did end, and ended badly for Luke.)

Game 34: Surprise! It's a Wonderful Arkham
Rex Murphy (the Reporter) vs. Chaugnar Faugn + the Dunwich Board

The Unappreciated Life
- Rex had it all: A shack behind the Arkham branch of Cat Fancy, a job selling stories about stray cats who made good, and a old family curse.
- "Just my luck," said Rex seeing an announcement of a local dress gala. "My one suit just got muddied and I accidentally ate my last dollar."
- "What did I do to get so darn unlucky, Fred?" asked Rex. "Shut up and drink the milk of the Mother Goat, initiate," scowled the cowled Fred.
- "Maybe it's this star amulet my pappy gave me," Rex thought. "My family's cursed and this is our one heirloom. Makes sense to chuck it."
- When the alien sat on his shoe, Rex knew going to their city was a bad idea. "Great, now my foot looks like a sea anenonanomee...whatever."
- "Have you seen the Yellow Snow?" the buzzing aliens asked Rex. "No, I'm not falling for that one again," he said, turning down a free lunch.
- "Do not fear these blessings," said Fred upon his return from the alien city. "What blessings? I still have this curse, this evil necklace."
- Rex doubted his curse when, despite his blind firing of the rifle, the deep one and his inbred cousin both fell with holes in their heads.

Pappy Issues
- At the Historical Society, Rex was offered a cipher to interpret jungle rites of the elephant god. "But my pappy never taught me to read."
- The editor growled, "You expect per diem for a trip to the Hall of WHAT? What kind of travel budget do you think we have here at Cat Fancy?"
- Fortunately Rex's endless greed secured him enough money by way of illicit means left as a mystery to the ages. "Hey, Celeano, here I come."
- Finding a tome so simple a child could read it, Rex asked for a child to be brought to read it, but the librarian said they were fresh out.
- Fred asked, "Tell me, Rex? How is it you're illiterate and yet you write articles for Cat Fancy?" Rex sighed, "No one reads the articles."
- Despite his illiteracy, Rex found his inner monologues taught him a knowledge of ancient spells. "Pappy'd be so ashamed. He hated learning."
- "What am I bid for this magnificent specimen of a gate box? Truly a unique item." "Six dollars!" cried Rex. "Now I don't need the per diem!"
- "Somehow I went back in time," Rex said in Victorian England. "If only I could change the future so I didn't waste money on this gate box."

Hot Dog!
- Rex then visited a time where he had never been born. "Don't you see, Rex?" asked Fred. "You really had a wonderful life! Even with curses."
- "You're right, Clarence...I mean, Fred. I wanna live again." Recognized by his angry editor, Rex cried, "Whattaya know? Merry Christmas!"
- Though it was July, he ran all through Arkham calling out good cheer. "Merry Christmas, Chaugnar Faugn!" "Happy new year to you..in R'lyeh."
- But Rex--who did NOT die--became as good a man as old Arkham ever knew. So as Tiny Fred observed "Shub-Niggurath bless us all, every one."

NOTES:
(A very wild and fun game, especially as Rex grew into a corrupted powerhouse by the end thanks to being a One of the Thousand initiate from the start. Once I got the "It's a Wonderful Life" encounter in Another Time, which is new to Miskatonic as far as I know, I couldn't resist driving that into the ground, especially as Rex won on the next turn. Incidentally, the joke about the yellow snow was born out of an encounter in another world asking the age old "Have you seen the Yellow Sign" and of course the next Mythos I drew was "Snow Drifts")

Game 40: Failed Campaign
Charlie Kane (the Politician) vs. Abhoth + the Hypnos Guardian

Hide and Seek
- "There is a man, a certain man, who for the poor-you may be sure-he will save all Arkham," chanted Mr. Sawyer to cheer up his boss Mr. Kane.
- "How can I save Arkham from ugly goo critters and still win an election and attend formal dress galas!" bemoaned Kane. "Heavy is my burden."
- Kane set out to find funds for his re-election, and met a wild-eyed man offering a trinket of Egyptian origin. "I'll take it!" cried Kane.
- Yet Kane suspected the wild-eyed man to be more than he appeared, especially when he gurgled and shambled about like a shoggoth. Kane fled.
- "Hiding from shoggoths in the science building, eh?" asked the archaeology professor. "Oh, we've all been there. That's how I got this job."
- Given a relic to handle by the professor, it glowed and Kane found himself outside clutching an elder sign and facing ta familiar shoggoth.

Downward Spiral
- "Oh my ankle!" cried Kane as he valiantly tried to face the shoggoth, but tripped before he could land the killing blow on the vile beast.
- "Earl," Kane told his assistant. "I don't think I'm gonna be able to hoof it around town. Unless I get one of those spruce motorbikes."
- "Ow, my ears!" cried Kane as he approached another gooey creature in an effort to slay it, only to find himself unable to hear anything.
- "Hrm..." the doctor considered. "Mr. Kane. I am afraid you are officially too old for this sh..." "Shut your mouth, doc," snapped Mr. Kane.
- While travelling between dimensions to prove the doctor wrong, Kane was saddened to learn he lost the Arkham election. "I blame you, Earl."
- "He's hearing voices, doc," Earl Sawyer told the psychiatrist. "Pity," said the shrink. "I'm afraid that madness has devoured him utterly."
- So Kane spent the rest of his days in a padded cell, awaiting the arrival of campaign funds that never came, although Abhoth did show up.

NOTES:
(Not even Hypnos could save Charlie from being trapped by monsters on all sides. He could never reach any clues of value and in the end was done in by having Hearing Loss and Hearing Voices, the first time in a while that a dual injury/madness has killed a character.)

Game 44: Looking for Love
Lola Hayes (the Actress) vs. Yog-Sothoth + the King in Yellow herald

Suffering for her Art
- It'd been a bad year for Lola. Losing the lead in the new craze play "The Queen in Yellow" had taken its toll on her sanity. "I'll show em."
- "I just need to find my loyal fans," nodded Lola. "They'll love me no matter who I am, the grand Queen of Sheba or the lowliest Zoog slave."
- Last she heard, her number-one fan lived out on a desolate isle swarming with moon beasts. "The things a gal does for her art," she sighed.

Many Adventures
- "Off to Celeano" was all the note on the shack said. "The nerve!" griped Lola. "Well, I guess I'll borrow my fan's shantak to fly me there."
- She found the place weird, full of professors trying to teach her a thing or two, but by the end she began to understand the strange beings.
- Disappointed at not finding her fan, Lola cursed the Celeano gate, sealing it with her vast knowledge of alien linguistics. "Schmalakazam!"
- "If I uze zis ztatue, it will cauze you to change into zomeone elze," the German scientist warned Lola. "Tosh. I do that already. Acting!"
- "Good thing I took shooting lessons from that time I played William Tell's saucy sister," said Lola over the Leng Spider's smoking corpse.
- "Fly my shantak," cried Lola. "I know my numero-uno fan wasn't at the Abyss or Celeano, but I have a good feeling about the local dive bar."
- "Look lady," said the man in a rush. "I ain't never hearda no Lola Whosit. Now do you wanna buy a map of Arkham or what?" Lola sighed, "OK."

Gazing Inward
- Lured into the Witch House by her hopes, Lola uncovered the horrible truth of herself as she unrolled a scroll. "Thou hast...an addiction."
- Lola then wove in and out of mad dreams driven by her addiction. "Addiction to what?" she asked. "Of course. It's all so obvious. To fame!"
- As she sealed the final gate, she saw the manifold weeping eyes of Yog-Sothoth on the other side. "Don't you see, Lola? I was your #1 fan."

NOTES:
(A close game, but given a Find Gate and Summon Shantak spell came to Lola, she was able to beat the race of the doom tokens and the Acts nearing their end.)

Vaughn had always been a good student, but now it seemed as though he mastered his lessons too quickly.

I won the Call of Cthulhu CCG world championship in 2006, and as a prize got to design a card for the game. Part of that card was an artistic representation of me, which I now use for my avatar.

Anyway, I was quite surprised to find myself on one of the cards when I bought the (then new) expansion for Arkham Horror and saw this:

I'm Spectral Razor.
