Got my kickstarter copy today.

Played it with the family at dinner. Twice. And once more at breakfast.

This is an excellent family game. Great for kids and grownups alike. It would make a pretty good party game, or even an icebreaker for small groups. It's good age-leveler in that, like many dexterity games, having higher level cognitive abilities doesn't help you much. It makes you laugh. There are also a number of variant ways to play, and score, right out of the box. And the rules are super simple.

Not just for kids.

But my kid loves it. We play it after dinner and during breakfast before heading to school. Big hit in our house.

I backed the full-meal-deal on Kickstarter, which included some cards and the golden axe and bark expansion. I'll save that for the future. But really, the basic game is good enough.

In a word: funfunfunfunfun!

Hmmm, that seems a natural fit, we played Bohnanza and Click Clack Lumberjack on the same day 936 days ago. This one doesn’t belong on the list, it’s been played I’m sure, we just haven’t logged any of them since it’s really just silly fun and we don’t keep score for the most part.

The week had me introduce the wonderful hobby of designer boardgames to several people. One of my college classmates had sent me a message that her daughter plays boardgames, and it was during this chat that I had promised to introduce some to her if ever I ever got the chance to fly South. Well, I did have a trip to the Southern Philippines last week so I made good on my promise to bring over a few gateway games, but unfortunately she was not able to meet me. I did manage to show a bit of the hobby to the sales people of my distributor, however, so it was not a total loss!

Monday

Click Clack Lumberjack = 2 Plays

This dexterity game would be the star of the week, as I felt it was the simplest game to teach "muggles". It had the desired effect as the game was well accepted by everyone. I managed to teach this Monday to Kat, with the resulting 2 games having me win (although I could not remember the scores).

Tuesday

Tuesday had me get in some games with the district manager Anthony as well as his rep for North Mindanao Mark.

Click Clack Lumberjack = 1 Play

I again start with this game in the nearby Starbucks close to my hotel. Their inexperience lead to each managing to collapse the tree, ending with my victory.

Love Letter: Batman = 1 Play

I then teach this simple deduction and player elimination game. Mark really liked the game as he and Anthony continuously employ Bane to knock me out of the rounds. I decide to shorten the winning condition to 5 tokens, and this was achieved by Mark while I end up with a fat 0!

Mark proves to be adept with cards, as I get totally crushed. Mark 5 Anthony 1 me 0

Wednesday

Wednesday had Alona and I drive down to Southern Mindanao (it was a roughly 8 hour trip). I again spend the time after dinner introducing the games to her.

Click Clack Lumberjack = 2 Plays

My miscue results to victory for Alona as she wins game 1: Alona 7 (17-10) Me 4 (19-15). The second game had no cores collapse but this time I carefully chip my way to victory with a score of 27 (23+4) to her 17 (4 + 13).

She really liked the game and asked me where she could get a copy, as she would like to introduce this to her son.

Tales & Games: The Three Little Pigs = 1 Play

This cute dice game was up next. This is really a great gateway game which is an easier way to introduce Yahtzee mechanics than King of Tokyo.

I manage to win despite Alona getting to play wolf twice and managing to blow away the straw components of a couple of my houses! Me 62 (40 + 5 Houses + 4 Pots + 13 Bonus) Alona 28 (19 + 3 Houses + 1 Pots + 5 Bonus)

Saturday

I went home Friday evening, so it was only on Saturday where our McDonald's council could be scheduled. Keith was feeling under the weather so it was initially just Kent and Jim who joined me, but Jim's brother Jay later caught up.

Race for the Galaxy = 1 Play

McDonald's was full when the 3 of us arrived, so we settled for a smaller table and could only play a game with a small footprint. Luckily this game fit the bill and i also decided to include the Race for the Galaxy: Rebel vs Imperium expansion for the first time. We played with Takeovers off since I am still not sure how that worked. In any case those new military cards really gave Jim an early boost in settling a lot of his worlds. It was a close game though as Jim and Kent were on a card tableau building spree while I had settled on a produce/consume cycle by midgame. Jim triggered the end of the game by being the first to 12 cards, and it was the high point military worlds which swung the game in his favor as these overcame Kent's Goal and Bonus points for the win.

The new military cards from the expansion really helped Jim in his conquest of the galaxy! Jim 45 (Cards 27 VP 3 Goals 5 Bonus 10) Kent 40 (Cards 15 VP 5 Goals 9 Bonus 11) Me 37 (cards 16 VP 13 Goals 8)

I liked the new cards and also liked the new goals. The test would be to see how we would react to the takeover mechanic, if ever i ever figure out how that works.

Five Tribes = 1 Play

We had managed to move to a larger table and was setting up the tiles (including the expansion for the first time) when Jay arrived. We gave him a crash course in playing the game and what soon followed was a session which was prone to more AP than usual as the new options kind of befuddled everyone early on. Things sped up as options became less and soon the auction became cutthroat as bids got getting more aggressive. Kent's late surge in collecting cards not only gave him a large point total from his sets, but also gave him a lot of slaves in which to pull out a good builder action late in the game. The end result was a high scoring game won by Kent.

Kent 172 (orange Coins 32 Elders 23 Artisans 4 Djinn 14 Trees 9 Tiles 39 Cards 51) Jim 141 (blue Coins 41 Elders 12 Artisans 12 Viziers 6 Djinn 12 Trees 3 Castles 5 Tiles 49 Cards 1) Jay 141 (pink Coins 19 Elders 37 Viziers 4 Djinn 6 Castles 5 Tiles 20 Cards 50) Me 125 (black Coins 41 Artisans 6 Viziers 4 Djinn 6 Trees 3 Castles 5 Tiles 47 Artifacts 5 Cards 8)

I certainly find the addition of the mountains to be quite “irritating” as they really can block your way. The artisans themselves are OK since I’m not sure if focusing on them could be a game breaking strategy, but a couple of those tiles really helped Kent win the game by enabling him to grab the djinn and tile he wanted to control. All in all the expansion isn’t really an overpowering one which changes the base game by a huge deal, although it does make the game longer as now you have 5 more tiles to empty (the chasm does not count) as well more things for an AP prone player to consider.

Lords of Xidit = 1 Play

This has not been brought out in quite some time and was a fitting end to the evening. We managed to breeze through this one (with the standard 12 rounds of actions) in just 45 minutes!

A win by me means I do not go home with the cone of shame!

The assessment results by game end. Me (yellow 1st) Kent (red 2nd) Jim (green 3rd) Jay (blue 4th)

Sunday

Sunday had my clan have a gathering in order to celebrate the birthdays of my brother Sunny and my sister Annie, but also to play the dice game associated with the moon cake festival. This was supposed to be in September but was postponed since my Sunny's kids got sick, so it was decided to have this event celebrated together with the birthdays of my siblings. This meant an opportunity for gaming of course!

bo bing = 1 Play

This very random dice game was first played. You roll 6 dice and the results of the roll determine the "level" of prize you receive. Rolling 4's is the objective so even a roll of 1 4 gives you a level 6 prize (lowest prize) while at least 4 4's or higher is the level 1 grand prize. In any case I managed to roll 5 4's which meant I won the first place prize, but everyone had a chance to "steal" this by rolling better, and I was lucky that no one did (although my brother rolled 4 4's to get second place).

It's really not much of a game, but it's a social activity for the family and a chance for everyone to get together and celebrate as a family.

Click Clack Lumberjack = 1 Play

The kids wanted to get a game in, so the only way was to bring this out since this was the only one which played more than 4 that the kids were willing to play. In any case defensive chipping won me the game as I was the only one to NOT collapse the tree!

I manage to win with a measly score of 4!

The kids then wanted to play Splendor, but since it could only allow 4 my brother and I sat this one out and I moderated the game among my son Shawn and his cousins Mikel, Maki, and Ethan. Ethan and Mikel were up to their usual "reserve a level 3 card and then hoard chips to build" strategy, while Maki was trying to build and engine and Shawn was focusing more on level 2 cards. Ethan was the first to 16 and won the game, but the others were not too far behind as all were poised by some game ending moves of their own.

Ethan gets 16 points for the win, with the others right behind...

Eminent Domain = 1 Play

The final game has my brother Sunny and nephew Ethan join me for this mixed mechanic empire building card game. I went for the 3P long game variant which leads to a more satisfying and less abrupt ending than the standard rules, and this was indeed so as both the emptying of 2 role slots and the VP chips ended the game. Sunny won by having the high point tableau as well as leeching off my produce/trade cycle, although it was a good end since the results were not obvious.

Sunny 28 (Influence 8 Planets 20) Me 24 (Influence 13 Planets 11) Ethan 21 (Influence 3 Planets 18)

Essentially the object of the game is to hit the tree trunk with the plastic axe so that the bark pieces fall off, but the core of the tree does not. It works on counting, subtraction, aim, and motor control in tool use.
