A small posse of new-to-me games in June. None of them show-stoppers, unfortunately. I am getting married(!) next month and will be on a honeymoon in Thailand at the end of July. So I will not post to this list again until the end of August, when I will include two-months of games, but I'm pretty sure Thailand won't provide much exposure to new games.

That doesn't mean I won't try.... ninja

Finca - 7
Light set-collecting game similar in depth to games like The Hanging Gardens, Sanssouci, and Oregon. Could be worth picking up as a light couples or family game.

Finca was a mildly received game when it was first published, but since going out-of-print it has become a valuable and sought-after commodity. Fortunately, it looks as though "Crash of Games" will be republishing it in 2017. While I do think the game is great for certain audiences, the current high price tag is a bit hard to justify with so many good, cheaper games filling the same niche.

In Finca, players move pawns around a circular rondel in order to collect fruit that can then be traded in for matching scoring tiles. Each region of the board has 4 tiles and once a region is cleared of tiles there is a majority comparison for who has collected the most fruits-on-tiles of fruit the region is associated with. Once 4 regions are empty of tiles points are added up.

It's a very simple game about moving your pawns around the rondel in the most efficient and advantageous way possible. A Pawn moves as many spaces as the pawns on the originating tile and collect as many fruits as pawns on the finishing tile. The game is really about figuring out what pawns to move to get what is in demand and set up big future turns. There are lots of randomizing elements to make one game different from the next, but you are still doing the same thing every game, even if the specific priorities differ. It's a solid game at two players and becomes a bit less controlled at higher player counts. It's very good for what it is, but I'd definitely wait for the re-print and play some other fine in-print games in the interim!

Trambahn - 6
Borrows its basic premise from Knizia's Lost Cities, but the cards are also used to manipulate which colors will score when and as currency with which you can buy the right to start new columns. The twists are fine, but don't necessarily make the game any more interesting or difficult.

While similar to Lost Cities, Trambahn has a few more levers to pull and your hand of cards goes through constant churn in the style of many multi-use card games. You use cards to start and grow columns of colors in ascending order just like the Knizia classic. Also, you can choose to use cards as money to buy column headers that give increasingly large multipliers as the game progresses. Also on a turn, you must use one or two cards to play to the center of the table as passengers. When four passengers of a particular color have been played, columns of that color score for all players. After 10 scorings, the game ends.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the game. The required column headings get increasingly expensive but are necessary to increase your ability to play to the columns that score you points. This means that as the game progresses entire hands of cards get converted to money on a fairly regular basis. You should manipulate the timing of scoring and the colors that score so that your strengths are emphasized over your opponent's. However, for all of that, I'm not sure my decisions are any more interesting than the pressure of deciding whether to hold or play a card in Lost Cities. I felt like the greater ability to manipulate the game in Trambahn actually alleviated some of the pressure behind the decisions that Lost Cities forces on a player. Trambahn is perfectly fine, but I doubt I need to own both of these games.

Castaways - 6
Creative, but overly long game of "coopetition" between players on a deserted island. Story-driven narrative is cool, but reduces replay-ability.

Castaways came out at the same time as Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island and was completely over-shadowed by the larger release with a similar theme and cooperative game play. Both games also feature worker-placement, but despite all of their similarities, the experience of playing them is quite different. Castaways is like two games bonded with super glue. One is a standard worker-placement game where food and supplies are gathered, shelters are built and constructs to help you get rescued are found or built. The other is a choose-your-own adventure type exploration game. Both parts are integral to winning. The worker-placement game must keep you alive while you explore to the heart of the island. If you don't get to the heart of the island, you can't win.

Sound a bit like a co-op version of Above and Below? It sure does. The main difference is that the stories in Castaways are driven by three decks of cards. As you have encounters and make choices in one deck, you add cards to future decks creating consequences that later come back to help or hurt you. Above and Below lacks any such continuity in the exploration, however the worker-placement side of the Ryan Laukat game is more interesting than the pedestrian choices you face is Castaways. But for that I rate them both the same.

In the end, the game runs about 3 hours, which is too long for the payoff. The worker placement actions are repetitive and, while necessary, are uninteresting. The story cards are fun and I love how the choices can play out, but there are not a lot of story paths and it would get predictable after a few games I imagine. Also, a big part of game play involves getting "story points" which determine a single winner among the survivors. It feels kind-of tacked on and at least in my group we largely ignored it, even though there are cards that come into play that specifically allows players to fight for or steal points from one another. If the game was somehow designed to finish in 2 hours and the story points didn't feel so tacked-on to the core game play, I might have rated it higher. Maybe...

Ancient Terrible Things - 5
You've seen it before. It's about rolling dice combos to claim point cards, using cards and tokens to manipulate your rolls. The twist is that you have to roll everything when you re-roll unless you spend resources or cards to be more selective, making it harder than Yahtzee, I suppose.

I actually enjoy games that use dice to limit action selection, like Troyes and Macao. But when the goal is to simply get combos in order to get points, the game loses me. I don't think Ancient Terrible Things is a bad game in the genre. But I need to stop even considering picking these games up. They just don't last beyond a play or two for me. Even if you like these kinds of games, I suspect replayability will be an issue with this one. There isn't enough variety in cards and actions to keep it fresh.

Players go to locations, which give them a few things, and then they face off against the encounter at the location. Encounters have a dice combo on them that a player needs to roll to eliminate it. If it is eliminated, then the player keeps the card for points. If the encounter is not eliminated, then the player gets a few minus points with a "Terrible Thing Token" - dun dun dun!!. Then the player can buy one or two items and end their turn. Rinse and repeat until all encounters are complete or all the Terrible Thing Tokens (dun dun dun!!) have been claimed. The artwork is pretty good and the components are quality, at least.

Moby Dick, or, The Card Game - 3
Clearly the designer was much more interested in paying tribute to the novel than in designing a good game.

The box and cards are beautiful, without a doubt. The art is evocative and the quotes and use of book characters will please any Moby Dickians out there. Until they play, that is. The game consists of three decks of cards (The Sailors, The Sea, The Whales), two dice and tokens for whale oil, which is the game's currency. Players each play a different faction of crew members aboard the Pequod. You start with a random assortment of 3 sailors in front of you. On your turn you first recruit sailors (you can have up to 7) with whale oil, if you have any. Most turns this will entail doing nothing because oil is hard to come by. Either that or drawing two sailors because your entire crew was killed since your last turn. Then you flip over an event card (The Sea) to see what happens to you. If you flip over a whale, then all players can lower their crew and go on a whale hunt!

Whale hunts are where the action is! First you draw a whale card to see how many of your sailors are killed. Some sailors negate certain effects, but you pretty much just kill as many as the card says. Then you add up your remaining crew's strength (if you have any) and roll two six-sided dice. If the value equals or exceeds the whales' strength then you attach to it. If you hit it again on a subsequent turn (again, assuming the whale doesn't arbitrarily kill everyone first) you kill it and get its whale oil, which you use to recruit more ill-fated crew members. Does that sound like a "rich get richer" design? Why yes it does! After a certain number of "chapter" cards are drawn from "The Sea", then you can encounter Moby Dick. The endgame is played differently in that nobody can defeat MB, you just try to have a large enough crew to be the last survivor. So it turns out the point of the game is to get a big crew, but whales keep killing them with impunity, so you often find yourself without any crew at all. The game is pretty much about drawing cards and rolling dice and looking at what happens to you until everyone dies... again and again and again.

Finca is set on Mallorca, Spain, and has players compete to produce and deliver fruits to the island's inhabitants. Besides offering a selection of delicious-looking fruit meeples, the game also incorporates the warm wind that drives the windmills of the sun-baked farmhouses.

I can attest that Finca conjures images of the Mediterranean very well.

I had said something somewhere on BGG about liking Finca, so Denise was gracious enough to bring it. Thanks Denise! She taught and by this point in the afternoon, Troy and Dave were really letting her have it with the heckling. The highlight was when she said matter-of-factly "here are some bonus tiles" and in unison they both gasped dramatically. The scores are a decent indicator of who was paying the most attention...
