I hope Ana-Maria will give this another shot. I am not sure whether it was from fatigue and/or the fact that Die Macher can burn the thought processes of even the hardiest of gamers, but she kept saying that she still didn't quite get how or why scoring-level wise you move the huts to plan for the village-creation scoring-- in terms of trying to PLAN it all.

Or so she claimed. As is her wont sometimes, she claims she's a bit lost the whole time on some games here and there , then she alnmost wins.

Must play this more since it's a lacking title in terms of plays on my 10x list !!

 8   Wir sind das Volk!
 10   Innovation x3
 8   Clans x3 NEW!
 6   Attika
 6   Power Grid

Marc and I got together on Friday. We started with the new-to-me Clans. I tend to like Colovini games, and I liked this one. Looking forward to the next plays.

After that, we played Wir sind das Volk! I played as the West. It went to the last scoring round. I lost through protests, but Marc would have won by attrition as well. Realistically, I lost the game in the first half of the first decade by allowing protests in distant provinces before building out into them. This play cemented my view that the West has fewer strategic options. For me, that makes it a bit less fun to play with the West. It reminds me of Stronghold that way.

Innovation was next. We played best of three. Marc won two of them, if memory serves, and after we played Attika once, which I won in a close finish.

Today I went to a public meetup where I played Power Grid with two other players. It was a close finish. I paid $150 for a power plant in the last round, which would have given me the win, but it came back to bite me when the next power plant allowed another player to replace one of hers to buy up and store a bunch of coal. I was entirely reliant on coal and was one short of powering all of my power plants after the market was depleted. So I lost because of that single coal.

plays 2 to 4 players (best with 2 players)

Clans grew on me. It's an excellent little game, but some people won't get into it due to its dry abstract nature.

nice simple rules and modest playtime

a gem from Leo Colovini

Games with David on Friday
Here, Clans shows up as the highlight of the week as it has been a second life for this simple yet deep game. I love the reverse connection game mechanic in which you invert the connect the nodes formula by taking an (quasi-)infinitely connected set of villages and reduce them to nodes. The tension is quite delicious is in how you must work at deducing your opponents' colour (of 5, one of which you can outright put of the list, since it is yours) while masking your own colour (with a very limited action space -- spend too many actions diverting attention and your score might suffer!). Colvini also adds a deliciously little vicious rule which also inverts clustering houses (as filler points) -- should the node reach a size of 7 or more, the 'cherry-picking' inidividual houses get kicked out of town, scoring nothing.

I took two games, and David took the third. We both stared sombrely at the board trying to make meaning from each other's moves, occasionally glancing inquisitevely. I'm not sure if either of us ever guessed accurately as to what colour the other was playing. I look forward to playing more -- a strong 7 with the possibility of going higher.

Wir sind das Volk! didn't go as well. David, as the West, got hammered with unrest in the first half of the first decade and never fully recovered (I also made concerted efforts to remove easy unrest removal options from the selection). This, in turn, meant that the West's best tool to address discontent (i.e., Living Standards) couldn't be put into motion as without an economy in a province, it's a pain in the ass to get up and running. Maybe David could have spent a few turns using the worst of the four options (i.e., remove an unrest) -- at the expense of giving me more time to set myself up for success? Who knows -- but I had an easy run in terms of relative economy, David's protests made flight a non-issue and I was in a position to keep him pressed via a possible political win (which he kept at bay). David was a good sport about playing it out and seeing if he could ever wriggle out of the early vice-grip he was placed in.

We played 3 games of Innovation afterwards. The first game, David had set up a vicious pincer attack in which he would win with either the highest score *or* the lowest (with the 10 deck empty). The second game, I took a slew of special achievements (achieving two with one move), but ended things with globalization (the no-leaves win). The last game, I ended things with Bio-engineering (the have leaves win) for the win. Moral of the story? 10s are crazy and you either have too many leaves or not enough.

The evening ended with a game of Attika that was well fought -- David made sure that my early decision to split my forces was to be regretted (which it was) and was able to force me to make horribly sub-optimal moves as he was rearing near my capital. David won handily.

Games with N Saturday night
I got there a bit late as I clearly don't understand how time zones work (I was talking to a friend in Japan who was calling Sunday morning, with me not realizing that it would mean me talking to him Saturday afternoon!).

Anyways, we started with War of the Ring (and almost ended with as well!). Here are my early thoughts:
Quote:
In short, this is a lovingly made game that provides a platform for players to play out an epic battle between one another without too many mechanisms getting in the way.

War of the Ring is an amazing asymmetrical (yet balanced) game in which the (weaker) Fellowship must sneak through to Mount Doom through the (militarily stronger) Sauron player to deliver that one damning blow (i.e., destroying the ring). Not only can the the respective players win by setting out to achieve their goals -- but pushing too hard here might result in defeat as well: if the Fellowship recklessly sneaks to Mordor, they might fail and falter to corruption (i.e., losing) and if Sauron is too reckless in his advance, the Free Peoples might sneak behind enemy lines to capture a few places (i.e., losing). This risk/reward system pushes palyers into a dragged out match in which no one wants to blow their stamina on one final punch -- its a tense marathon match rather than a quickly ended street fight.

The diverse cards are the heart of the game -- providing the meat to incentivize different and divergent explorations of what could have been in Middle Earth (especially partnered with the potential range of choices provided by the dice). While none of them seem broken, there seems to be a great balance between powerful yet highly contextual cards and highly flexible yet less powerful cards.

If one can find any fault with the game is that it is long. Not too long -- as the game is quite engrossing -- but long enough that it might be difficult to schedule in that 4+ hours.

However, it is a 4+ hour stretch that is well spent, generally tense -- yet while simultaneously seeming light, breathable. A stupendous design.

I took the match as the Free Peoples, but it was down to the wire. N was forcing my hand as he was stomping through the territories -- it was do or die, so I climbed Mount Doom as best I could.

We ended the night with Roll for the Galaxy (which felt strangely all-too-familiar while being fresh):
Quote:
While this is multi-player solitaire with a bit of deducing what other players might do, the simultaneous nature of it all, its quick playing speed, as well as constant "clack-a-lack" sounds (which make RftG sound like it belongs in a retirement home, or a casino) make it rather enjoyable.

I also assume that there are various paths to victory that are probably well balanced through rigorous play-testing. While not my favorite kind of game, I think it has a lot of broad appeal.

Aesthetically, I wish that it were easier to read from across the table what it is that your opponents tiles do.

N took the win by a few points. I'm not entirely sure what he did better or what I did worse -- but it did play quickly and rather simultaneously with a lot of clack-a-lack sounds!

This one may be tough to find, as it is out of print right now.

This is game of double think and trying to hide yourself while increasing your relative position in the game. This is one of those few games that work with hidden roles/identities for two players (Mr Jack is also a good example of this).

Rules are simple (two pages, perhaps?), decisions are tough, and the gameplay evolves with the groupthink of player moves.
