Collector find. SPI Flat tray version, unpunched in VG condition for $28. I don't think I'll even punch it. A Berg classic that wasn't improved by the Excalibre re-release in 2011. In fact, that was a disaster with virtually no improvements and worse counters. The tactical battle aspect is interesting in this one though what makes it shine is really the campaign game. Maybe I've been watching too much Spartacus lately.

As an ancients fan I was always interested in this, as there aren't very many operational ancients games, and no other games I know of that cover the Macedonian or Syrian wars. It looked like it could be cool. I bought the Excalibre reprint which was not cheap.

Unfortunately, they cocked up just about everything about it when they did their reprint. It's pretty clear the game was yet another Berg game kit rather than a proper game when it was originally released because there was significant errata put out in Moves Magazine, but the Excalibre edition didn't bother to incorporate it. Somehow they managed to make the counters worse than the original version and, to top it all off, they forgot to reprint one of the tactical displays. And, when it was all said and done, the designer later admitted that the map was at the wrong scale for the Syrian War.

Sold at a major loss.

Originally published in 1977 by SPI, Excalibre Games reprinted it in 2011. While it has a nicer map, they botched just about everything else. The Phalanx tactical display was left out completely, the graphics they used on the counters were poor, making it difficult to distinguish units. Even worse, there aren't enough legate counters and there aren't any tribune counters!

To top it all off some critical errata from Moves Magazine was never incorporated into the rules. They just reprinted the original rules with no changes.

This game was not cheap. Had I not pre-ordered from a 3rd party site, I would have demanded my money back.

I suspect I could probably include just about every Excalibre reprint here, really.

My original copy of SPI's The Conquerors was a horrific loss for me. It was given away and then confirmed as subsequently destroyed in a flooded automobile trunk in the mid-1980's. I searched for a replacement copy for years not finding the right condition and circumstances. Only a year ago I made the right find and acquired a mint copy for a hefty price. It didn't matter to me; after thirty odd years we were finally reunited.

The Conquerors had essentially two operational/strategic games of the ancient Mediterranean world ("The Romans" and "The Macedonians"). Included was a stylized battle board on which land battles could be tactically resolved.

This came out in 1977 and Decision Games is planning a reprint to it again. I never had a copy so I can't say how it played. It featured both a Roman and Macedonian game. The Roman one had
Quote:
two specific periods are covered: the Second Macedonian War (against Philip V), in which Rome laid its claim for control of Greece (albeit in somewhat defensive posture), and the Syrian War (against Antiochus, the Selecuid king)
The Macedonian side was Alexander's campaigns. It was one of Richard Berg's earlier Macedonian simulations.

The Conquerors: The Romans and The Macedonians is a strategic and tactical simulation of the eastward expansion of the Roman Republic after the Second Punic War, which ended in 200 B.C. Two specific periods are covered: the Second Macedonian War (against Philip V), in which Rome laid its claim for control of Greece (albeit in somewhat defensive posture), and the Syrian War (against Antiochus, the Selecuid king), wherein Rome made its first incursions into the Asian continent. The latter Scenario uses both maps in The Conquerors game (that of The Romans along with that of The Macedonians).

The Macedonians covers the conquests of Alexander the Great.

The Conqueror Worm
By Edgar Allen Poe

Lo! 'tis a gala night
Within the lonesome latter years!
An angel throng, bewinged, bedight
In veils, and drowned in tears,
Sit in a theatre, to see
A play of hopes and fears,
While the orchestra breathes fitfully
The music of the spheres.

Mimes, in form of God on high,
Mutter and mumble low,
And hither and thither fly--
Mere puppets they, who come and go
At bidding of vast formless things
That shift the scenery to and fro,
Flapping from out their Condor wings
Invisible Woe!

That motley drama--oh, be sure
It shall not be forgot!
With its Phantom chased evermore,
By a crowd that seize it not,
Through a circle that ever returneth in
To the self-same spot,
And much of Madness, and more of Sin,
And Horror the soul of the plot.

But see, amid the mimic rout
A crawling shape intrude!
A blood-red thing that writhes from out
The scenic solitude!
It writhes!--it writhes!--with mortal pangs
The mimes become its food,
And the angels sob at vermin fangs
In human gore imbued.

Out--out are the lights--out all!
And, over each quivering form,
The curtain, a funeral pall,
Comes down with the rush of a storm,
And the angels, all pallid and wan,
Uprising, unveiling, affirm
That the play is the tragedy "Man,"
And its hero the Conqueror Worm.

I think that this was the inspiration for the Total War series of PC games.

You have 2 strategic maps and when you have a battle you move all your pieces onto a tactical map to fight it out there.

And just like the Total War series of games, it just goes on and on without ever ending...

The rise of the ancient Roman and Macedonian Empires.

I think the Total War series of PC games owe a lot to this - with its' combination of stratgic movement and tactical battle maps.
