After last week had absolutely no board games played (we did other hobbies, but this is still unacceptable!), I hit the games with a vengeance this week. Two new games, one mb game, and one game that was neither, but that I wanted to play so much that we scheduled a get-together for!

4 different games played overall this past week.

Mystic Vale NEW!
* Plays this Week: 2
* Comments: I had several games bundled together in an order that was waiting for Mystic Vale to release so it could ship. It finally did, and all my games arrived at the beginning of this week. Ever since I heard of the game, I’d been very intrigued. Deckbuilding games are something that Tyler and I enjoy (it’s not an instant sell, but it gets us interested) and the “card crafting” aspect sounded like a unique take on the mechanic. I also thought the artwork was soothing and beautiful. All of this added up to my purchase of the game.

We played two games this week, and while it will never be the deepest or most complicated deckbuilding-like game, it feels very polished. The game runs very smoothly and it doesn’t overstay its welcome. Like Roll/Race for the Galaxy, there’s a pool of VP that will be depleted over the course of the game. This is the game end trigger. While I found Roll and Race for the Galaxy to be merely “okay” games for me (though it’s possible I’d enjoy Race a lot more with more time to get familiar with the cards), I thought the VP end-game trigger was a good idea to keep the game from dragging out too long. It similarly works well in Mystic Vale (and I enjoy MV much more). It’s that tension of wanting to build up your deck, but knowing that you can’t wait too long, or else the game will end before you pull off your enormous combos.

I know a bunch of people are not entirely sure what to think about this game yet. Personally, we really enjoyed it. I was surprised at just how well the push-your-luck mechanism worked in this game (and it’s not a mechanism I generally seek out in games). There’s a safety net put in and it’s up to the players whether they want to push past it. There is some randomness in the game, between what order the Vale/Advancement cards come out and the order you draw cards from your deck, which some players may not like. It’s not any more randomness than is featured in a lot of other deckbuilders, though, and Tyler and I are both fine with that level. Since the advancements are divided into three different levels, some of the randomness has been mitigated. And since the game plays so darn quickly (especially with 2P), I never feel frustrated that my cards didn’t line up as well as they could have. All in all, very pleased with this game and looking forward to seeing how AEG expands upon this system.

Cyclades
* Plays this Week: 1
* Comments: I realized a month or so ago that I hadn’t played Cyclades for over a year and a half. This realization occurred right after we purchased a copy of Cyclades: Hades so of course we had to schedule a game day so we could play!

Cyclades is one of my favorite games to play with 4 or 5 players (have never played 6P). We had over two friends who have both played the game multiple times, both with and without the Titans expansion. This time, I wanted to play the base game with all the Cyclades: Hades modules (island draft, heroes and new monsters, divine favors, and Hades). Strangely (for our group) this game didn’t see a ton of combat. Maybe we were a little rusty, but the game also ended very quickly (mostly thanks to the Divine Favors and the two theatres that showed up). I managed to sneak in a second metropolis on the 6th (I think) round by snagging Athena to scoop up two more philosophers (to the two I’d grabbed earlier). Since Athena was right before Apollo, there was nothing anyone could do after I plunked down my second metropolis. Hades only made one appearance in our game (and Corbin forgot to build a necropolis – I was very disappointed in him).

Everyone really liked the Divine Favors from Hades as well as the first round of island drafting (Titans has this as well). Heroes never showed up in the Monster deck, so no thoughts on those, yet. After surveying everyone’s opinions, I think next time we play we’ll use the Cyclades: Hades modules on the Titans map. I really look forward to it, since I always have a really great time playing this game (regardless of whether I win or lose). Maybe Cyclades: Monuments will be out! I certainly don’t intend for it to be another 1.5 years before we play again.

Five Tribes NEW!
* Plays this Week: 3
* Comments: Five Tribes was another game that was in my big box o’ games delivered this week. This is another game I’ve been interested in since it was announced (I tend to like Cathala’s designs), but Tyler was skeptical about it. Due to that (and the fact that the slave cards in the first edition made me a bit uncomfortable), I held off on picking it up. But then there were some big summer sales and this was marked down to a very tempting price. I’d heard so much good about it on these lists as well as the Women & Gaming forum (also hearing many say it played very well with two). And these new editions had Fakirs instead of slaves. I couldn’t resist, so I snapped it up.

It was a strong success. I think Tyler liked it even more than I did (and I really like it!). I played a lot of mancala as a kid and this hits the right spots to become the mancala of my adult life. It’s extremely smart, easy to learn, and we find the 2P version to suit us extremely well. Neither Tyler nor I are very AP-prone, so the game moves along within a reasonable time. Honestly, my biggest complaint is that the game is completely color dependent, so we’ll never be able to play this with our colorblind friend (he can’t tell a large number of colors apart, more than just the expected red/green and blue/purple). I fully plan to pick up Five Tribes: The Artisans of Naqala at a later date so we can see how that shakes up the game. Thanks for the recommendations, everyone!

Elysium mb
* Plays this Week: 2
* Comments: The last game we played this week was Elysium. This is a game on my hardcore 10x10, so our two sessions counted as play #7 and #8 for that challenge. Both games were played using the Deadly Plots set-up (Apollo, Athena, Hades, Hephaestus, and Hermes). We generally like to play with Apollo in our 2P games (since much less cards are seen in a 2P game, it helps with the planning). I won the first game and Tyler won the second. In the second game, Tyler actually managed to create a full level set which had two different cards that gave VP equal to number of families in the set. He scored a killing on it. He managed this primarily through clever oracle manipulation.

The game is still going strong for us after about a dozen plays. I’m still very glad to have included it on my hardcore 10x10 challenge so we could explore it as much as we have.

Note: Thanks to muka, W Eric Martin, 55cards, and AEGTodd for the board game box photos.

Wow, I played some really dusty games this month:

Cyclades - 1 play
First Published 2009
5 years, 6 months, 19 days
A solid game, but not one I'm planning to add to my collection. My most recent play was with the expansion, but I think I prefer it without.

Tikal - 1 play
First Published 1999
4 years, 9 months, 2 days
I enjoy the game, but I don't get excited enough about it to bring it to game night very often (especially considering how big the box is).

Munchkin - 1 play
First Published 2001
3 years, 7 months, 2 days
Current Rating -  6
I was surprised at how dusty this was. I wouldn't want to play every week, but I do enjoy a good game of Munchkin with the right group.

Legacy: Gears of Time - 1 play
First Published 2012
3 years, 4 months, 7 days
Current Rating -  8
I really enjoy this game, but, unfortunately, it's too brain burny to hit the table very often.

Legends of Andor - 1 play
First Published 2012
2 years, 7 months, 26 days
Played it at BGG.CON and enjoyed it, but I didn't know anyone who owned it (or at least, I don't know that they own it). We made a major rules mistake that really messed up the game, but I'd really like to get some more plays in.

Nations - 1 play

There are a number of small white scuffs on the corners and back of the box (it was stored against a wall; I think they may be small spots of paint from the wall). Picture available on request.

It was a very good week for gaming.

I started off by playing against Prp in Carcassonne, our first play with the Abbey & Mayor expansion. We also used The River, but no other expansions. Prp never played her barn. Without my barn, she won by 2 points, but the barn definitely won me the game.

Also on Monday, I played what was easily my worst Onirim solitaire ever. I played with Towers, Happy Dreams & Dark Premonitions, and Dreamcatchers. When the first twelve cards off the top of the deck were all Suns, I knew I was in trouble. I did get an Arrangement of Towers, and I was actually pretty satisfied with my five doors, considering how badly the deck ran against me.

Tuesday I met with the local game group I've recently joined, and started by learning a game new to me: Circus Flohcati. I liked it, and I tied for second in a five-player game.

Then we played Cyclades. This five-player session was my first ever with more than three players, and the others were all new to the game. But they picked it up quickly, and play was very satisfying, with great high stakes at the end. Green might have won with a longshot attack she attempted on Black, but rolling 0 she lost a troop and retreated. In the end, it came down to whether I or Red would win the bidding for Ares: me to invade his undefended metropolis, him to build a fortress and thus complete a second metropolis. Ironically, Red won with the favor of Ares, while having bared his throat by leaving two islands undefended.

We ended the evening with a six-player game of Bohnanza where I came in dead last. The game wasn't new to me, but my only prior plays were several years ago.

Prp and I had a fast play of Summoner Wars on Wednesday. Prp created Demagogue's Bachelor Party out of Smitten Demagogue by substituting the Abomination for Her, Bestial Mutant for Borrowing Mutant, and Void Mutant for Poison Mutant; I was still playing Mugglug's Frog Legs, featuring Prong and Bounders. Mugglug's first champion this time was Splub, summoned from a far forward vine wall in easy reach of a cornered Demagogue. He was soon backed up by Prong, although the Demagogue brought in the Abomination right away. After a couple of turns, the Filth managed to eliminate my champions, but the Demagogue was down to one life, and still within reach of my swamp. I summoned a Swamp Beast to finish the job.

Later in the week, we dusted off Hijara for a surprisingly close game of this placement abstract.

We also played some Chaos Marauders, where it was my orcs' turn to win.

On Sunday, we had an excellent play of BattleLore, with her Undead "Tip of the Spear" against my Uthuk "Without a Trace." Since I could get VP by not having units in clear terrain, and I could heal units with lore results rolled in forest and hills, I opted for a smaller army of more expensive units: Chaos Lord and Doombringer, Obscenes x2, Flesh Ripper Brutes x2, and Blood Sisters x2. Prp's Heralds of Dreadfall didn't hold on to the hills that she needed for a third victory point each turn. She played a command card to command a single unit at least twice this game. Nevertheless, she led in VP for most of the game. I caught up at 11 VP, and turned the tables in a final turn where I took 4 VP in one turn, capturing the 2 VP banner she had held since turn 2. The final turns of the game were largely a slugfest among the elite units.

The final game of the week was a play of Mega-Volcano on a new, symmetrical arrangement: Yellow on the middle axis with the white trio. I think I prefer it, because if caps start on red, then the white large isn't vulnerable in the first turn.
