A game of numbers and suits. It's interesting and I like it. I think it works better with a low player count to reduced the chaos between your turns. You can play up to 6, but then it becomes more of a silly filler, than at the lower player counts. I love the look of the new edition of this game.

One of my most played games, Parade is quick and clever card game that scales very well. It's got a mathy sequencing heart and a Knizia-esque scoring system -- points are bad, but if you have more of a particular suit than any other player most of the points in that suit are cancelled.

Tight and fun.

A nice number of new games even with them being on the lighter side.

Cards Against Humanity

Strategy: Hope you draw the most offensive and off-the-wall cards. And done.

Say Anything

Where knowing the people you are playing with helps out a lot.

Gauntlet of Fools

Seemed obvious how to win the game until I went and proved my theory wrong. Based on its rep I honestly thought it was going to be worse but so far this might not actually make one of the 5 or so worst games I've played in the year. Maybe even not even the bottom 10. (sarcastically excited) If I play it enough and it lands in the 6 range, I'll be happy. This feels like a 5 though.

I'm up to 112 new to me games, and this is where the Top 100 cut off begins for this list.

Chronicle

I need to go back and clarify some rules and do another play of it, but it has potential. I can see really liking this or being kind of okay on it.

Formula D

I can see wanting to move past the basic version of the game. A properly done roll and move game, but it is going to need the extra rules to give it some teeth. It is almost too easy to simply decide to skip on one stop per turn if you are using the basic rules. Not that it means you'll win, but you should at least do well.

Red7

If played by the actual basic rules this games is terrible. Like 2-3 type of range. Toss in everything else and I can see this being in the 7 range. Really looking forward to getting plays with this at different player counts. A perfect sub for No Thanks! when I need a break from it.

Parade

Really enjoying this so far. It feels like I don't need to look for another pure set collection game. Stupid simple to teach.

Got this because i'm a sucker for Alice in Wonderland and even though i knew it was probably thinly themed (it is), the artwork looked pretty good.

And because of it (really good game), i now own the entire "Deluxe card game" series from ZMan.

Parade, Arboretum, Black Spy, Chimera, Sky Tango and Tichu.
Even got the Fairy Tale and Lords of Scotlands re-releases that may or may not be part of the series, just in case they are whistle

Coup

Somehow one of the people in my game group hasn't played Coup despite this being the most played game since I got it. This was my first chance to play my copy of Guatemala 1954, but we kept with the basic version since it would be easier to deal with.

BANG!

I got my revenge from my fist play of this were I was out immediately after my first turn and won as an outlaw despite the other outlaw being taken out first.

Dixit

Still terrible at this game as my more geekier references failed to deliver or backfired for me.

Gauntlet of Fools

Not as terrible as I feared based on its reputation, but I'm not sure it is much more than what it is. The last player to grab a hero can always grab one without any penalties, and I fear that will win out more times than not. I, however, won by going first and picking a bow using avenger who boasted I could do it with one hand. I also won by one point and that was due to taking two gold versus another token to help my character while the other player took the token. New to me #111. Just misses the Top 100, but I didn't expect it to stay there anyway.

Parade

One vote for wonkiness with more than four players as one player won a 5-player game with a single point.

This is a small card game that I’ve heard good things about. The problem is that the german version is really bland and has different rules then the English one. Such little things really annoy me.

We only had three people show up for last week's game night, so I decided to try out some of my "smaller" games with them.

We started out with a three player game of Paperback, a game I've really enjoyed at the two-player count at home. Unfortunately, I'd found it to fall flat at higher player counts, as it tends to drag out. This was sadly no exception, and after an hour we decided to abandon the game. It's a shame it was the other two players' first intro to the game, as I think it's great with two.

I'd hoped to play San Juan (second edition), but after Paperback I decided to stick with quicker, lighter games. So I broke out Red7, which all but one of has had played many times before. And we played it many times. You just can't go wrong with this game.

Our final two games of the night were a couple of run-throughs of Parade, which went over very well. Everyone at the table enjoyed it (both were first-time players) and I have grown to enjoy this game more and more with every play. It's an incredibly interesting little game.

The only other games played last week were a few four player games of Dixit: Daydreams, which my daughter grabbed from the shelf at the FLGS during the week. Seems to have gotten very mixed reviews, but we all found it to be an excellent set. The cards all seem to "work" (i.e. every card played would nicely fit the given clue), which many times in Dixit they just don't.

This isn't all that hard to explain... it takes about 2 minutes really.

This is because a simple card play triggers three different rules all at once (and really that's about 3/4th of the game's full rules):
- The number on the card dictates the cards you can't take which are protected
- You will take all unprotected cards that have a value equal or less than the card you played.
- You will take all unprotected cards that have the same color as the card you played.

Now you go with these simple rules explanation, that everybody seems to understand... and watch in amazement these curious events:
- "You forgot to take this, this and this"
- "Why?"
- "They are the same color as your played card".
- "OH, i forgot about that. Can i take it back?"
- "Sure"
- "i'll play this instead. So i only take this".
- "Nope, this card is protected."
- "oops... ok how about this?"
- "Then you take these 5 cards, they are all equal or lower than the played card".
- "well, this other card?"
- "You forgot to take the cards of the same color again..."
- "oh right..."

And this goes on and on, every turn, for the entire game (or two) with some people.

I find that whenever you have a simple rule, if it triggers at the same time as another rule, then it's a learning problem. Now in Parade, you have 3... so it's somehow the most difficult game to teach i have (for what is essentially a game with a 4 pages pamphlet for a rulebook).

Great game... but it takes an entire game (20 minutes or so) to teach.

Item for Geeklist "New to you June 2014 => Best new boardgame"

Only three new games a year ago and nothing really stood out. Only one of the three got played again, which is this one that I selected as new game of the month. It was a rather uninspiring choice and a rather lackluster repeat performance. I would play it again, I guess, but I wouldn't be enthused.

Another card game in the Z-Man line, their release featured brand new artwork. I feel like the artwork in this version evokes the art style in the original animated film (which is not my favorite movie by far, but has some amazing scenes in it as far as the animation is concerned).

This is my most-played game, largely because it's such a good two-player game. (It's also great at higher counts.)

And it's very portable. We've brought it to the beach (on a day with no wind), camping, etc.

The Keepers

d10-8 The Duke - Great 2p abstract. I'll be looking for a copy.

d10-8 Kohle & Kolonie - I usually love this kind of complex economic weirdness.

d10-8 Parade - Great fun. Bought it the next day after playing. Might make my own deck with a theme I like better.

d10-8 Die Sieben Siegel - I'm trying a bunch of new trick-takers this year. This one will definitely stay in the rotation.

d10-7 Shogun - I don't recommend being the leader after year one.

d10-7 Viticulture - A good base game. Looking forward to expansions.

Lots of Maybes This Month

d10-6 Arboretum - I'd like to try this some more.

d10-6 Dominion: Adventures - It's an acceptable expansion.

d10-6 Dragon Parade - A decent filler. Looks nice.

d10-6 Little Devils - The point mechanic from 6 nimmt! in a better game.

d10-6 Onward to Venus - I really hope I like this more when I play it next.

d10-6 Opera - Should get better once we play it correctly.

d10-6 Palmyra - Need to try it a couple more times. Might fade into obscurity.

d10-6 Ring-O Flamingo - Fun time waster. I would keep it on the shelf if a copy somehow appeared there.

d10-6 SWAT! - Another perfectly acceptable filler. I'm sure I need to own at least 100 of them, right?

d10-6 You Suck - I enjoyed playing on multiple tricks at once.

d10-5 Black Spy - Not sure why this didn't grab me. It was fine, but unremarkable.

d10-5 Cirplexed! - The table hated it. I'd like to try it again with a more receptive audience.

d10-5 Horse Fair Card Game - This is a game. You could play it.

No Thanks

d10-4 Eminent Domain: Microcosm - There are other 2p experiences i prefer.

d10-4 Mondo - I like the ethos, but I don't do well with speed games.

d10-4 Roll for the Galaxy - I don't love Race for the Galaxy and dice hate me.

Second of the three games played at my friends' house. I introduced this to them several weeks ago, as they are big fans of Guillotine, and this has gone over pretty well too. Parade comes out at most Meetups as a good gateway game, but it stays out even with people who have played it several times. Not many better compliments can be given to a game than that.
