Parade fits in the same category as games like Battle Line, Balloon Cup, and Jaipur, but it's my favorite of the bunch by a long shot. What I really like about Parade is the scoring. This makes for a nice back-and-forth over a suit or two similar to how Lost Cities tends to play out. Unlike Lost Cities though, hand management is much stronger in this game; holding cards can help you swing a suit in your favor later. Brilliant design

Today after returning from work I have found note from the post office with some nice and some not so nice but still expected info.

1. Package has arrived (this is nice if you are wandering)
2. I needed to pay some customs fees (expected but still not so nice ).

Anyhow I've rushed to the post office, eager to find out what did Papá Noel secreto prepare for me. (Papa Noel = Spanish for Santa Claus - as my Santa is from Argentina, or so he/she says )

So this is what I have retrieved from the post office after paying USD 30 for custom fees.

Standard looking package with somewhat bigger size than needed for a game

After opening it I have found two surprises

Cry Havoc!!!! If I was asked what would be my most desired game, my reply would be that I can not decide between Cry Havoc & Scythe, so you can imagine how I've felt when I saw this

But that was not all, there was another game hidden in the package . And it was the game that I was recently introduced by great fellas from Cheeky Camel (https://www.facebook.com/CheekyCamelQatar/) during my last duty trip to Doha.

Parade, great little filer game!!!

Thank you Santa both for the presents but also for taunts, much appreciated

First thing first!
Santa, I'm sorry for it taking so long for me to make this post!
Work and my partners "cleaning" (meaning placing a huge pile of stuff which we should take to the second hand store around my computer so I couldn't get to it blush) got in the way cry.

Anyway! Santa sent me not only one but 3 lovely wrapped gifts this year!

But I couldn't wait until Christmas to open them devil.
redtraingreentrainbluetrainredtraingreentrainbluetrainredtraingreentrainbluetrainredtraingreentrainbluetrainredtraingreentrainbluetrainredtraingreentrainbluetrain

Inside were:

Parade
A game I have wanted to get since I bought black spy a couple of years ago. I have no idea if it's a good game but I love the quality of the box, cards and graphics!
Great pick santa!

Tash-Kalar: Arena of Legends – Nethervoid
Tash-kalar is one of my favorite abstracts! And I have been meaning to get this expansion for quite some time, but sadly even thou I love the game it can be hard to get people to play abstract games so I have always ended up passing on it. But that is one reason I love BGG secret santa! I can wish for games I want instead of games my game group want to play laugh

And last

Tiny Epic Kingdoms
I haven't played this but as a lover of small box games I have heard a lot about it, and since I just got tiny epic western from kickstarter I think it's time to try the original version.
T.E.K wasn't on my wishlist but it's a perfect fit for my collection, great pick santa!laugh

Again Thank you Santa for an awesome Secret Santa experience!

My wife is back in town this weekend, which means it's time for board games face-to-face rather than online & Skyping! This was our first time with Parade. Lots of fun and quite a "thinker." I'll need to play it a few more times before I get a good handle on the best strategy. I went for dominating colors, while my wife tried not to take too many cards. I ended up winning 37-42 (low score wins).

She decided to have an after dinner rematch and ended up fairing much worse, as I won 28-50.

I bought this game recently based on the post in this list [not that I need any encouragement to buy new games] and am glad I did.

We got in our first 2 plays last night. Simple to learn and simple to play but figuring out the best strategy is tricky. We really enjoyed it!
Cards are played in a row [the parade] and on your turn you add a card to the parade. Depending on the number and color, you may end up removing cards from the parade and putting them in your tableau which is where you get your points.

The first round I lost 33-4. [I wasn't paying close enough attention and got all 6 colors of cards in my tableau and prematurely ended the game while TK only had a few cards. That won't happen again!]

The second round I lost again but it was much closer 46-39. [Low scores win in this game]. I tried getting the majority in a couple of colors [cards only count 1 point each then instead of face value] while TK tried to avoid getting cards at all.

thumbsup Easy to learn and play
thumbsup Interesting Choices to make on each turn

thumbsdown can be a bit fiddly keeping track of how many cards are in the parade. This is not a huge concern but having some indication of each set of 3 or 5 or something might make it quicker to take note of so you can concentrate on which card to play next. I might try to come up with a simple play mat to alleviate this. I need every advantage I can get since TK is tough to beat.

Woo, it's Parade month! What is this, the 3rd unique user to have listed this game this month? Strange coincidence for a relatively obscure little card game. This info might be redundant due to previous entries, but here goes anyway.

Parade is a reverse set collection game where you don't want to collect cards, except when you do! The goal is to finish with the fewest points from cards collected but there's a twist in the scoring. If you have the most cards in a suit you flip them face down and they're only worth 1 point apiece (which is good), but if you don't have the most cards in the suit each card is worth its face value (which is bad, especially if you have high value cards).

For 2p the scoring is slightly different in that you have to have 2+ more cards than your opponent instead of a simple majority. This can make for some really tense finishes especially as you each reveal which 2 cards you decide to keep at the end.

The tension in final scoring reminds me of Arboretum, and the don't-play-that-card-or-she'll-snag-it considerations remind me of both Arboretum and Lost Cities. Great company to be in, for sure.

For the previous Parade poster who had a hard time counting and recounting the cards in the parade, here's a quick tip to keep count of how many cards are in the parade: we used pencil erasers (we have school age kids so we're swimming in these things) to mark every 5 cards.

Parade is a really great little card game that rewards multiple plays (it's hard to get a feel for what to play and when during your first couple plays), with ample opportunity for bluffing and misdirection as well as big surprise plays to tilt the game in your favor.

thumbsup Interesting card play from simple numeric cards. The best play isn't always obvious nor is it the same from game to game.

thumbsup Lots of tension right through end game scoring. You never know who will win unless it's a clear blowout because a card or two in the right suit can tip the balance.

thumbsup Lovely art both on card faces and backs, although the theme is mostly tacked on.

thumbsdown Constantly shifting the parade of cards is a hassle.

End of a 2p game:

Relatively unsung little card game that has Lost City- and Arboretum-esque qualities. Tense and fun 2p game.

Ian taught me this fun trick taking game set in the world of Alice in Wonderland. Like most trick taking games (or trick avoidance) this one is really about minimising damage to your own score while ideally trying to setup the next player to take a hit on theirs. The objective in this game is to end with the lowest score.

The game is constructed of 6 suits (colours) of cards ranging from 0-10. If you end up taking cards, you'll score their face value at the end of the game unless you have the majority in which case all cards of that suit are then worth 1 point each for you. (In a 2 player game, a majority is at leas 2 or more than your opponent)

The game ends when the deck is exhausted, or when one player gets their 6th suit.

When the game ends you secretly select two cards from your hand and play them face down, revealing them for end game scoring.

That majority system adds an extra layer of depth to the game, and the threat of your opponent breaking your majority with those 2 final cards adds more risk to your majority plays.

A really simple to understand game, offering a good level of strategy and one I would happily play again.

First time post here so I hope everyone finds this slightly worthwhile. I've been lurking for a while and thought it might be time to contribute. We have played this twice now and have loved it. We both shied away from taking cards in our first play and my wife did a much better job of it than me and won. This time around, I decided to try to strategically take cards and try to force her into taking higher point cards. This resulted in higher scores for both of us, but I won this time. This one is so quick to learn and to play and yet has amazing depth in its decision making. We both enjoy it quite a bit. I would highly recommend it for anyone who likes intense games that make you think but can easily be played on a weeknight. Works very well with two players.
