Haven't played this in about a year, but still a great game. I could have put Roma on here as well, instead, as they are similar. I just have my sets mixed together.

A is for Arena.

I really like this game, which I sort of consider to be "Castles of Burgundy Bloodsoaked Duel." It plays fast and vicious. I have one of my best win rates here for any game in my collection.

(My most-played A game is the abstract Abalone.)

I started off the week with a couple of lunchtime plays of Arena: Roma II. I'm loving this game, but I may be winning it too reliably for its continued currency.

I got out Rune Age to repeat a recent solitaire loss, using the same race (Uthuk), scenario (Monument), cities, neutral cards, etc. It was a very near thing, and I'm keeping this setup on hand to try again until I beat the darned thing.

Prp and I played our dragon variant of Batt'l Kha'os with revised rules, and it worked great this time. We allowed any dragon in play to move at the end of its player's turn, and permitting a move of one tile in any direction, including diagonal. That worked great. It had real consequences for the game, but it didn't become the main concern. Players might prefer to lay tiles farther away from an opponent's dragon, but by the time a tower was being completed, the Dragon was likely to be able to make some trouble there.

I played a couple of games of FITS this week. The first was just with Prp, and she was leading at the end of the third round by four points, but I scored 8 to her 1 in the fourth. The second game was the whole family, and I came in last with my wife beating both me and Prp.

I learned to play Innovation from a co-worker over lunch. He beat me in our first game, but I still felt somewhat competitive. We played again the next day and I buried him. I don't know the game well enough to know how much of that was raw luck, but I must have at least played competently!

Prp and I played a handful of games of Fiesta Caldera. We're very evenly matched at this game these days; she may win a little more than I do.

Prp requested and won a 10-point game of Tenzi this week.

In turn, I asked for a play of Ignis, which we hadn't played for a while. She beat me at that too.

On a hot streak, Prp had her first win at BattleLore! She was Waiqar with "The Widow Stone," playing a Heralds of Dreadfall-based army. My Daqan Lords were only a slight tweak on the Guardians of Henfar, taking a Command Tent to get an extra unit of Battle Mages. But that Command Tent, which I let fall to Wraith attack early in the game, probably cost me the win in the end. The final score was just 16 to 15, for the girl.

At "So Hideous a Chain" on Thursday I got to try out all four of my new Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game decks for May. They got progressively better (or maybe I did) as the evening went on. I had fun with The Yarn Unravels, a Hastur/Miskatonic deck with story-activating effects, but I only won one story. I did only marginally better with my hunters and wizards deck Libera Nos. (John's venerable Eye of Y'golonac dominated with Cthonian combos.) My mono-Cthulhu No Monument to Folly was very competitive, with a double From the Depths right at the outset giving me a terrific stable of cultists. But I never managed to play an Ancient One, and John's Long Tentacle of the Law got its avatar engine working from turn one. Interestingly, the need to suppress my support cards with avatar Gregory Lean later gummed up the engine, but he still managed a win. Finally, I achieved a swift victory with my Yithians-in-Dunwich deck Neither Here Nor There. I had two (transient) Dark Passengers resourced for my opening turn, and I worried that I was going to starve myself for resources, but the Yithian thing worked. Meanwhile, John used the Temple of R'lyeh to destroy my characters to the point where he had none of his own, and I pretty much won in a walk, taking my second and third stories in a single turn. They each had two of his dormant cards on them, but by the time they woke, it was all over.

I taught the Ingenious Card Challenge to some co-workers, and discovered in the process a rule that I had previously overlooked: the "discard your hand and redraw" condition.

For the first time in a while, I pulled out Space Hulk: Death Angel - The Card Game. It was my first time ever trying the 2-player setup (4 teams) as a solitaire game. The only expansion element I used was one of the teams from Marine Pack I. I failed dismally, not even reaching the penultimate location.

Prp and I played IceSickle for the first time in a while. This is a game that should be getting more attention in connection with Pyramid Arcade, which will supply all the components for it. I won 29 to 25.

Prp and I switched decks to re-play the same Summoner Wars matchup as the previous week: I took Sabbat of Tacullu against her Selundar's Seraglio. We both decked, but Tacullu stayed secure while putting the heat on Selundar. At the end, not one but two Mind Witches used Selundar's own Out of Shadows ability against him, after he had been harried by both Khan Queso and Urick. Malevolence wanted to rescue Selundar, but the Owl Gryphon was all she could handle.

Sunday's Concordia play on the Germania map completes a full tour of the six maps as part of my 10x10 challenge. We played with salt and the forum tiles, and it was a very fun game. Prp did well, working big Smith and Vintner and building in all of the salt cities. My emphases were Mars, Saturn, and Weaver. I won 184 to 148.

Board Game: Arena: Roma II [Average Rating:6.98 Overall Rank:806] [Average Rating:6.98 Unranked]
thumbsup Easy game to learn. Clear and concise rule book.
thumbsup Card and cardboard component quality is high as you expect from Queen Games.
thumbsupthumbsdown Art design is solid, but is a little on the bland side by Queen Games lofty standards. Certainly not bad art!
thumbsup Game play features dice rolling plus card synergy. Each card on the table is played to a space numbered 1-6. When you roll the dice you place them on their respective number and activate the card there. Some actions don't require a specific number. So, you never feel locked into your dice or like the game relies on luck of the roll.
thumbsdown Your options from turn to turn feel unnecessarily limited because most of the game you have zero cards in hand. During setup you must play out your starting hand. And refilling it is slow and costly. So, you're almost locked into your opening draw for the much of the game.
thumbsdownthumbsup Unfair advantage to the 2nd player. Certain Attack cards destroy an opponent's card when in the proper position on the table. Since the 1st player must play out his/her hand before the 2nd player it's very easy for the 2nd player to set up Attack cards. This can be remedied with a variant where players alternate placing one card at a time instead of their entire hand during setup.
thumbsdown Not very thematic. However, this isn't a big deal to me.
thumbsup Fun tug-o-war style ebb and flow to the scoring/end game system.

Arena was a recent purchase that my wife and I took it for a test drive. While I really wanted and expected to love this game right out of the box I am still trying to decide how I feel. I definitely didn't dislike Arena Roma II, but it didn't suck me in after one play either. Partly because of the lack of cards in hand. All those fun cards and synergies... but the game almost punishes you for going after them. Now there are a couple of REALLY powerful cards that help you add cards to your hand or place new cards on the table. You need new cards when your current layout isn't working. Meaning you're probably already behind. Spending a precious dice action to get a single card in hand pushes you even further behind. Also, partly because this game can be brutal! A couple of poor decisions early can put you so far in the hole that it's impossible to climb out. There is very little time to recover from early missteps.

I do hope with future plays that I will come to appreciate the Arena Roma II for what it is. What it is is a game where you only have freedom to make small changes every couple of turns rather than being able to quickly and drastically alter your strategy. I definitely can see this being a fun, tense back and forth game if both players are of equal skill.

This is a two player game by Stefan Feld. Yes, THAT Stefan Feld! Yet many people haven't even heard of this title, and currently it only has an average rating of 7, and is one of the lowest ranked of all Feld's games. But I just love the special abilities of the cards and their various uses. This and its predecessor Roma (for a comparison between them, see my detailed article) are among my favourite two player games.

For those interested in finding out more, here's my comprehensive pictorial review of Arena: Roma II:
