Forces Support, 50p, wooden edition, lovely looking game - More of a coffee table game than one I'll actually play though.
No pictures of this edition in files I'll get around to rectifying that soon.

BOMBAST

It's hard to avoid the word "bombast" when reading about various American 19th century political debates - the speechifying included a lot of it.

By bombast, I mean overwrought or pompous language, whether written or spoken. Or overly fancy words. Which gives us the related adjective bombastic, or overly pompous, ostentatiously lofty, etc.

But the original meaning for bombast when English added it in the 1560s was cotton or any other substance suitable for padding clothing. Just a little earlier (1550s), as bombace it meant simply cotton. The source for both was Old French bombace (cotton, wadding). Via Late Latin bombacem (based on a corruption of Latin word for silk, bombyx) and Medieval Greek, the original source is something from the Middle East, maybe Iranian pambak or Armenian bambok.

The sense of padding lent itself well to making fun of pompous speech, and bombast came to mean that by the 1580s. Bombastic was coined c. 1700.

Fun Fact: It's hard to avoid bombast in an election cycle.

This is unusual in that the original game was 2-4 player.

I recently thrifted the same basic game but in a 2-player only format.

The 2-player version shown, in pristine, possibly unplayed condition.

Charity-shop find £2.00.

Attractively produced, but one to re-donate I am afraid.
