Two copies of this one, actually. I haven't yet played a session with armies greater than 100 points (that would require the second set), but I like the idea of having more copies of some of the low-count troops. It's a fun game, and Prp plays it pretty well.

The Pocket Battles games are what I'll be reaching for when I'm missing BattleLoreand Summoner Wars.

It was a battling week for me!

Monday was the first of two separate sessions of BattleLore. Prp played as Daqan (for the first time ever) using the Guardians of Lore army in "Damming the Muir River," while my Uthuk army was Harvest of Flesh in the "Veil of Secrets" scenario. The whole game used no expansion content of any kind. Prp got an early lead, seizing the banner on her side, and the river ford that would score her VP. In retrospect, she should have put both Rune Golem units on her right, in order to prolong her exploitation of the ford, because a detachment of three Viper units were able to both hold the banner on my side and kill two of the Rune Golems, causing her to pull back the third in fear. I caught up with some serious killing. The Roc was the second Daqan unit to go down; after it wiped out some Flesh Rippers I pinned it against the edge of the board with Blood Harvesters and a Viper Legion. On the whole, I was pleasantly surprised at how useful the Viper Legions were.
Final score: I won 17 to 10.

Later in the week, a reversed-factions rematch featured my Daqan in "Barrow Mounds of the Gatesmen," and Prp's Uthuk in "Bleeding Skies." She used a modified Harvest of Flesh that traded the extra lore for barricades, and swapped out one Flesh Harvester for an extra Viper Legion. In retrospect, this scenario is probably better with Blood Sisters than Viper Legions. It was part of the Warband of Scorn kit. Everything else in this play was from the base game. The game was interrupted after turn 5, and resumed to complete the crushing defeat of the Uthuk Y'llan by turn 8. Rune Golems never even used their special ranged attacks!

I had another lunchtime play of Pandemic at work. We played with four players and six epidemics in the deck, and we won solidly, although defeat was just around the corner.

Prp and I had our first play of Carcassonne for a while. We played with base game plus Hills, Vineyards, and Castle expansions only. With savvy use of Vineyards, Prp scored 21 points with a single Abbot! But I still won.

In a lunchtime game of Pocket Battles: Elves vs. Orcs, we played 60-point armies. My furshlugginer Hero couldn't roll a hit (.50 odds per die) in ten dice! My elves lost, of course.

In our final "So Hideous a Chain" session for Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game, I lost with three new decks. My Yellow Serpent was a sound design, but I never really recovered from having my turn-two Feathered Serpent Infernally Obssessed by my opponent. The next two plays were three-player games. My new decks Bad Vibrations and Hour of the Gugs were no match for time-tested standards in the hands of my opponents.

I played Innovation at lunch again, and beat the game's owner. I ran the table, thanks mostly to Pottery, which was still scoring for me right up to the end.

Prp and I had two sessions of Summoner Wars, and she won both with a deck that is now her new favorite--Smitten Demagogue.
Champ: Her
Non-Starting Commons: Cultists, Zealots (4 ea., same as base deck)
Mutants (8): Absorption, Barbed, Burrow, Horror, Incanter, Poison, Spew, Winged

I lost to the lovesick mutamancer first with a Vanguard deck Farthen's Enantiodromia.
Champs: Archangel, Master Bullock, Korbolden
Non-Starting Commons: Demon Hands, Warrior Angels, Woeful Brothers

Then she absolutely flattened my Sand Cloaks deck Murderous Marek.
Champs: Fink, Spider, Violet
Non-Starting Commons: Hunters, Assassins, Renegades

The week started on Monday morning with a play of Pocket Battles: Elves vs. Orcs with 60-point armies. My orcs were lucky, and got a lot of punch out of kobold-supported Fanatic and Boulder Thrower both. Prplerose had cause to regret sending her Treeman after my Troll: Treeman missed, and Troll delivered three wounds, entirely sucking up the Elves' reserve of command tokens. The game was over in two rounds.

I spent Monday evening teaching my parents to play Zark City. After a learning game which I won, my mom won the next two plays. The first of these was a straightforward win, but in the second, I was forced into a kingmaker position, and decided to block Dad (whose turn was next), knowing that he wouldn't be able to stop Mom. Alternately, I could have blocked Mom and just let Dad win.

Thursday was Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game at "So Hideous a Chain." I played three games against John. In the first, my Arthropods and Avatars used an early Shocking Transformation to bring out X-Oonth for Mi-Go dominance against John's Arkham 911. In the second, he kept the same deck and managed to sweep all stories against my Daring the Design. Then he got out his trusty Eye of Y'golonac for another shutout against my Blasphemous Banquet. (My late-game Dick Pickman powerhouse was still no match for Y'golonac and Shub together.)

Before giving a lecture on Friday, I roped a couple of attendees into a three-player game of Martian Chess. As they were just beginners trying to get their heads wrapped around the game, of course I crushed them without any effort (17 to 7 to 10). I wonder if this game would be easier if it didn't have "chess" in its name.

Prplerose and I played our first game of Concordia: Salsa on Saturday. We added the salt commodity from Salsa and played on the Hispania map (but not with the Forum). The personality card tableau seemed to clear off with alarming speed, and after scoring, we discovered that four cards had been missing from the deck: Farmer, Vintner, one Colonist, and one Prefect! Ah, well. It was a good game, and our scores were gratifyingly high, considering the missing cards, and that neither of us could build even ten houses before I emptied the tableau. My strategy emphasized Jupiter and Mercurius, with a very healthy Saturnus as an afterthought.

For my Sunday morning solitaire play, I tackled the solitaire variant of the Monument scenario in Rune Age, using the Orcs of the Barren Plains. I used no mercenaries, and didn't bother to put out any 1-gold cards for purchase. Although I thought things weren't going so well at mid-game, I landed a win in 20 minutes, with one event card to spare.

To my surprise, Prplerose challenged me to a play of Nexus Ops! It was a great, close game. We played on the standard board setup, with some alternate exploration tokens, Time Is of the Essence, and alternate units. Prplerose was in the lead (when we weren't tied), until the very last turns of the game. She allowed me to dominate the monolith with my Wyrms. She begged, "Don't kill me," in my penultimate turn, so I didn't. It gave her one more turn to try to get the win: "Ha!" she said, believing she'd psyched me out. But I knew I could score a non-combat VP the very next turn ("Research Study: Magma Pool"), and I did, after her desperate flanking assault came up empty because of my exploding Shardians.

I had played this game a few times before, but it had been gathering dust for over a year when my daughter (age 10) agreed to a game at the end of December. Although she usually likes to play Orcs in other games, she opted for Elves in this one.

We used the large example armies given in the rule book, which are 80 points each. I mistakenly thought that they were 100-point armies, so we played with too many order tokens (10 each instead of 8) and to too high a point threshold (50 instead of 40), but the game was still fair and played well.

In the upshot, she beat me soundly. In a later rematch, I got my own back, but by a smaller margin. Hopefully we'll play again this week.

My daughter finally took me up on an offer to play this game, which I had previously only played with a former co-worker. Although she tends to prefer orcs in other games, she decided to play elves in this one.

She beat me soundly in our first outing!

Having missed out on Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game, the week before, I had Br. Goat over on Monday for a few plays. It was the last hurrah for my December decks, but he was breaking out a couple of new ones. My triple-faction Investigators Dicking Around rapidly swept his Fractured Nexus. His deck held up a little better against my Cthulhu and Shub ladies Suck My Kiss Again. His new deck Home for Dinner managed to defeat my License to Depart.

Tuesday I tried out a new Summoner Wars build: the surprisingly excellent Masque of Melundak. Champions were Gargos, The Child, and Malevolence, while non-starting Commons were Stalkers, Lioneers, and Rangers. It was a quick game. Frick flooded the field with Oafs at first, and Melundak was on the defensive. But Malevolence and a couple of Lioneers turned the tables in a big way.

The big gaming surprise of the week was introducing my daughter to Pocket Battles: Elves vs. Orcs. We played our first game with the sample 100-point armies in the rules book, and she beat me soundly. She was Elves against my Orcs. In a later replay with the same armies, I won, but by a much narrower margin.

We also played a game of Cthulhu Gloom. Her Whateleys beat out my Village of Innsmouth by a mere 5 points! (That's actually the smallest scoring increment in the unreduced values of the game.)

Old Zadok Allen,
The wandering drunk,
Searched a sepulchre
While deep in a funk.
He saw the sticky star-spawn
In the cold, old tomb,
And then was analyzed by alienists
Who got him a room
In the witch-house
Where he wailed:
"Hastur! Hastur! Hastur!"

I continued Onirim with a couple of plays of Happy Dreams and Dark Premonitions with the Towers. In the first, I got my Arrangement of Towers, but fell one Door short of a win. A few days later, I won the second quite resoundingly.

Prplerose prevailed against me in a match of Ingenious Challenges. We played each of the three challenges once, and in the final scores she had me by 21 to 15. (I had narrowly won the Card Challenge only.)

In solo Elder Sign play I racked up a loss to Glaaki in Streets mode, with some valiant moments. The starting investigators were "Ashcan" Pete and Akachi Onyele, but Akachi was devoured when an event-generated monster made it impossible to succeed at the Arkham adventure Curiosity Kills. She was replaced by Bob Jenkins. In the end, we only got 5 (out of 12) signs before Glaaki woke, and though we succeeded at hitting him 5 times, we only brought him down to 8 doom, because he ate Bob.

I had a single play of Mega-Volcano this week: a strange game this time with an unusual start, and slow, somewhat frustrating play. Prplerose captured a 7th color by way of suicide.

Saturday morning I sent the Dwarves of Dunwarr in against the Resurgence of the Dragonlords in Rune Age. My home realm took 15 damage, and it was a near thing in the final battle. Still, it was nice to win a solitaire play after the drubbings I've been taking in Elder Sign!

In lunchtime play on Saturday, Prplerose beat me at 2 out of 3 plays of Martian Coasters.

The final game of the weekend was a win at Space Hulk: Death Angel – The Card Game. I had a very solid victory for Deathwing Marines using Mission Pack 1. We still had five out of six team members remaining when we reached the Machine Spirit Core (after the Locomotivus and the Tenebro Maze), although three fell in the five turns that it took to achieve victory there. Final survivors were Librarian Menelauis (no surprise) and Interrogator Chaplain Uriel.

A surprisingly large range of possibilities for me this year, but I'm going to plump for this quick and simple wargame (along with the companion sets Pocket Battles: Celts vs. Romans and Pocket Battles: Macedonians vs. Persians, which I class as effectively one game as you can mix and match opponents as you like).

I've played it no fewer than 41 times, all with my middle son as far as I remember. Although it plays very quickly (usually no more than two turns, perhaps 10 minutes), there are a number of strategic (army selection) and tactical issues to consider (who do I attack with first? Do I use an order to intercept an attacker?). We've had a lot of fun with this and it has been played consistently over the year, with the first play in January. My son has even taught it to some of his friends, so a multiple success.

Runner Up: Ora et Labora. A rather meatier beast, with obvious similarities to the designer's chief claim to fame, but also many differences. Played 5 times last year, a decent number for a quite lengthy and slightly brain-burning experience!
