July 25th marked my 33rd birthday. We had a really great day of gaming planned out as follows:

This week's Game Night we started out with Flea Market, a dice game where players are buying and selling items at the Flea Market.

Players receive two dice in their player color and $24. The board is set up with the sixteen items for sale. The starting player takes the three white dice and the game begins.

On their turn, the player will roll the three white dice. The total of the dice is the number item that will be for sale. In the beginning, this item can be found on the sale board. Players will move the item to the "For Sale" spot and cover where it was with the item closest to the entrance of the board.

Now, players will roll their two dice in order to set up their purchase price. After rolling, players are allowed to roll one die again. After this roll, the price is set. Once everyone has rolled, they reveal their dice. The player with the highest total has the choice to buy the item or to pass. If they buy the item, they pay the total to the bank and take the item. If they pass, purchase moves to the player with the next highest amount. If all players pass, the player who rolled the white dice receives the item for free. The dice are then passed to the next player.

As play continues, eventually an item that has already been purchased will be up for sale. At that time, the player who has the item places the item on the "For Sale" spot and collects money from the bank based on the highest total on the empty tables that have been revealed by selling items. These totals slowly go up as more items are sold. Players will again have a chance to purchase the item and, should anybody do so, they pay the selling player. If everyone passes, the seller gets the item back.

Play will continue until one player has collected $45 dollars. This player is the winner.

Flea Market is a fun dice chucking game that plays quickly. It's one of those games where it really comes down to sheer luck. Buying an item or not buying it only matters depending on how the dice come up. A good game that is fun to bring out if you've got 20 minutes to spare.

Next up, we played Ultimate Warriorz. In this game, players are gladiators fighting in an arena to be the last man or beast standing.

Everyone chooses a character and receives their cards, life tokens and any other specialty tokens that go along with the character. The board is set up by closing up the box, flipping it over and placing the walls. Players will be playing on the bottom of the box in the arena. Players now take turns setting their warriors on the spots in the arena in ascending order from smallest to largest character. The round marker is set at one and play begins.

Players choose one of their eight cards simultaneously. After making their choices, a countdown is started from 8 to 1. As each number is said, players who hold that numbered card play their card and this initiates their turn. If ever multiple players play on the same number, play order is determined from smallest to largest character.

Players take actions on their turn depending on their card. There are three possible actions, most cards use two of these. First, players are allowed to move the total listed on their card. They can move before, during or after taking an attack action. If listed as zero, players cannot move on this turn. Players can take a melee action and must be in the same zone as another player in order to do so. Finally, players can shoot at their opponent. If in an adjacent zone, their full attack hits. If further away, players remove one point from their attack.

When attacking, players roll as many dice as their attack is listed on their card. So a "4" would mean players will use four dice on their attack. Players choose who they are attacking if multiple characters are available and roll the dice. Hits are made if players roll equal to or higher than the defense value listed on their opponents' card. If successfully hitting, they take as many life tokens as hits from their opponent. If getting first hit, they take the large token worth three points. All other hits are worth one.

Each character has two special actions which change the game slightly when played. Most of these give players extra attacks or better defense. It's just enough to give the player a slight advantage on that turn.

After a round of each player taking their turn, the round tracker is moved to the next round and players will continue their fights. If a player knocks out their opponent by taking their final life token, the character is removed from the arena and placed in front of the player who made the final blow. Play will continue for seven rounds or until only one player is remaining. If a player is the last man standing, they are the winner. However, if multiple players are left at the end of the seventh round, they count up their points. The player with the most points wins and, in case of a tie, the smallest character will get the win.

Ultimate Warriorz is a simple, pure combat game that plays quickly. That's a good thing since it really doesn't have much substance. I enjoy that each character has a couple of unique powers and different sizes and life pools. It also seems very well balanced with no character seeming to have any real advantage over another. The problem for me is that it's just sort of "bleh". I just wish there was more to it than just "fight each other". Not really my cup of tea, but I would play it again if in the right mood.

We then moved on to Seven7s, a game where players have powers over the seven of the most famous sevens in history.

The 49 card deck is shuffled and each player receives three cards. The top card of the deck is flipped to start the game and play begins with the starting player.

On their turn, the player is able to play one of their cards and then take the action of the card. When playing, they must place the card in the column the card matches or create a new column with the card. The only exception is with the "Ages of Man" cards, but I'll explain that in a moment.

Most of the cards allow for an instant action to take place. For instance, playing a "Lucky Gods" card allows the player to state a color or number. They will then flip over the top card of the deck and, if they match the color or number on this card, they receive the card as a bonus at the end of the game. The "Colors" cards are different in that whichever card had been last played on the column, the color of the card now has a bonus to end game scoring. Players will always end their turn with three cards in hand.

The "Ages of Man" card is a special card and can be used as a wild card and added to any column. However, if played in its own column, it makes the cards with the highest value (starting at 7) worth zero points. More cards in the column means the card with the next highest value (6, 5, 4, etc) are worth zero.

Play will continue until one of the columns has reached seven total cards. The player who plays the final card in the column plays their card sideways as it is still part of their scoring hand. Players will now score. Cards in hand are totaled at face value taking any bonuses or penalties into account. The player with the most points wins. If tied, the player with the lowest numbered card in hand would win and, if still tied, there are multiple winners.

Seven7s is a pretty interesting game. I like how it's a deck of 49 cards, 7 cards of 7 suits and 7 numbers each. I like how each of the suits has a special power that's unique and can changed the game. What I don't like is the "Ages of Man" card. It's a clever card though and can push the game along well however, we had a player who constantly played them in their own column, which kept taking out the high cards. While most games tend to end in the low to mid tens, we had a game end with 5 being the high score. He single-handedly broke the game. Other than that, pretty cool little game.

Moving right along we played HomeStretch. In this game, players are buying horses and betting on who they believe will win the races.

The board is set out and each player chooses a color. All player tokens are placed on the "50" on the score track. This track represents how much money each player has. Players also receive betting tokens. Players are then dealt out horse cards (depending on number of players). Two purple and two green race cards are chosen and placed on the table, purple cards on top of green. The horses are set up on the track andt he game will begin.

During this first phase, players will choose one of the horses from their hand and then pass their hand to the player on their left. They then select another horse from their new hand and pass again. This continues until each player has received equal amounts of horses. The price of the horses are added up and each player loses money based on how much they spent on their horses. This makes up the players' stables and players will receive money should their horse place in the top three of the race.

Players now begin the first race. The top race card is flipped and bonuses and handicaps are set up for the horses as shown on the card. Handicaps mean that the first time a horse would move, they don't. Once the handicap is removed though, they will move as normal. Bonuses provide extra movement for the horses first move. As with the handicap, once it is used and removed, they will move as normal.

Once bonuses and handicaps are set up, players will place their betting tokens. Beginning with the player with the most money, they will place out their five tokens (a 3, two 2s and 2 ones) on the betting tracks. The first player is not allowed to stack their tokens. After placement, the player with the next most money places their betting tokens. This player may now stack two of their tokens. This continues until all players have placed their bets. After all bets are placed, the player with the most money rolls the two dice and the race begins.

When rolling the dice, players add the numbers and move the horse with that number, taking into account any bonuses or handicaps. After their first roll, players may move the horse one space and roll again, or they can move the horse two spaces and pass the dice. If the player takes a second roll on their turn, the horse that is moved after the second roll must move two spaces.

Players will continue rolling and moving the horses around the track until three horses cross the finish line. If at any time a player rolls a number of a horse which has already placed, they will move a horse in last place a specific number of spaces depending on what was rolled. After the final horse has placed, players receive payouts. First, the owners of the winning horses are paid depending on the race card, with their tokens moved around the scoring track. Players who share ownership of a horse (two characters having the same horse card), they split their winnings. Next, bets are paid out for Win, Place and Show bets with totals being multiplied by the token placed their. For instance, if a player put a 3 chip on a 10 spot during betting, they would receive 30 points if the horse they bet on wins.

After this first race, players are allowed to purchase horses once again. This time, horses are dealt out to the middle of the table (one for each player). Beginning with the richest player, they may take a horse and pay its cost. After each player has made a choice, a second group of horses is placed out and final purchases are made. From this point, no more horses may be purchased.

Each race will now play out the same with the race card being flipped over, the horses being set up according to the card and bets being placed in order from richest to poorest player. The race will commence and players paid based on their horses winning and bets made. Once the fourth race is completed, the player with the most money wins.

HomeStretch is a really fun horse racing game where players not only bet on the horses, but also have a stake in them, pushing their luck and hoping they not only win their bets, but win the race with their horse. I really like how everyone has their own meta-game going on. Betting on your own horse and having it win the race nets you a lot of money, but it's not always easy to pull off. Spreading your bets around actually can work in your favor sometimes, especially if you're behind in the game. Helping another player to let their horse win if you bet tons of money on it, can surprisingly boost your bank. All in all, lots of fun and a lot more going for it than a basic "bet on the horses to win" game.

We took a short break for dinner and birthday cake and then we finished up our gaming session with Asara. This was my 22nd favorite game of all time last year and continues to be a favorite of mine. This is what I wrote on the game last year:

Asara holds a special place in my heart. It was the very first game I played when I came back into the board game hobby and it was one heck of a reintroduction.

In Asara, players are builders competing to bring the most prestige to their name by constructing the largest and most beautiful towers in the city. The game is played over 4 rounds (which represent years), during which they will be acquiring the pieces for their towers and assembling them.

Players start with a hand of cards with different colors. On their turn, players play a card from their hand to an action space on the board. Each space has a specific action it can provide to players such as acquiring tower pieces, getting money, building portions of their towers, etc. Once a card has been played in one of the action spaces on the board, all cards played afterward in that area must be of the original card’s color. Turns continue around the table until all players are out of cards for the round.

Scoring happens at the end of each round and is based on the number of towers a player has as well as any ornaments on the towers. After the scoring at the end of round 4, a final scoring occurs and bonus points are given to the players with the largest towers of each color, the most towers, and the largest tower overall. The player with the most prestige points is the winner.

Asara is simple in play and beautiful to look at on the table. As I said in the introduction, there couldn't have been a better game to suck me back into this hobby and it remains one of my favorites.

So that's it! Another awesome Game Night, and another year in the books. We had a great time shopping at the flea market, fighting as warriors, controlling sevens, buying and racing horses, building towers and having a great birthday celebration. As always, thanks for reading and thumbing and commenting! See ya next week!

This week we played:

Tuesday:
Asara x1
Hamsterbacke x1

Thursday:
Jaipur x2
Hamsterbacke x1

Saturday:
6 nimmt! x1

Sunday:
Asara x1
Hamsterbacke x1

I honestly don't know why Asara is so overlooked. I think it is an excellent, light worker placement game. It's great for "casual" gamers where the theme is simple to understand. Towers = points. Even Coal Baron, which is one I really want to play, is often overlooked. I think the best thing about that one is that you choose your contracts and the coal elevator is just fun to move around! I'll probably end up buying it some time in the next few months.

Hamsterbacke is becoming a family favorite, seeing at least 10 or 11 plays in the last 2 or 3 weeks. I like this card game and it really feels like it would be some kind of classic game, among the likes of Bohnanza. However, when a game that "simple" is published now, versus 15+ years ago, it's nothing really new.

Well, thanks for reading, and have a great week everyone! meeple

p.s. We went to the FLGS to check if they had Arboretum and they didn't. I should've called ahead but I was hopeful hehe.

German Edition

Language Independent (English rules included)

Received in a previous Math Trade. Played a bunch of times. In Good Condition (wear on cards from shuffling).

May have some minor box wear/denting from being thrown around in my game bag.
(pet free, smoke free home)
