A Few Acres of Snow

First play. Played long (2,5 hours). Regularly re-read rules. We did a lot of mistakes:
- building locations,
- attacking locations,
- getting Empire cards,
- very rare use of Governor card (to clean the hand from low-useful cards).
Economic victory of French (+ they successfully besieged locations of British and made raids). British too late began to strengthen hand with Empire military cards.

We'll give one more chance to the game.

Snow Tails

4 players (me, my wife and our elder sons - 11yo and 6yo). We have to help the youngest gamer to drive through turns. Together we helped him to win. Other players have been too optimistic at the beginning: "too simpple boardgame", "look at me". However, the process was not so simple, and we have to clever use our sledges, dogs, cards and brains. Good play and good boardgame.

This was a part of my "The 2016 Family Choice Challenge: Play 5 Games 5 Times Each"

Still a great deck building game, an important element that we include in the Wargame Bootcamp is not only how to play the game, but useful tips and tricks and stratagems on how to play well.

This is the week that was... in gaming!
No gaming last week. meeple

What I did on my summer vacation:
We had a blast, and in my case, a literal one.

I lived in Quebec as a little boy, and I have lots of fond memories (even though my adult self shudders at the thought of living with that kind of snow in winter now), but I'd never been to east of Quebec except for a few brief stops in Gander, Newfoundland en route to or from other places.

So this year, for a whole variety of reasons, we did an eastern Canada vacation. We started in Quebec City, and after a brief while there headed east. We took the scenic route along the south side of the St. Lawrence, headed south around Rimouski and followed the road into New Brunswick, stopping along the way in Miramichi, Bathurst, and Moncton, where we saw the tides of the Bay of Fundy in action.

We took photos at the 55 ton lobster sculpture in Shediac on our way across the Confederation Bridge to Prince Edward Island and we had a magical time on the beautiful beaches, at the Anne of Green Gables historic site honouring Lucy Maud Montgomery, and caught this season's closing night of the musical in Charlottetown.

We took the ferry from PEI to Nova Scotia and spent three nights in Cape Breton. We spent two nights at the Red Show pub in Mabou watching some amazing local talent, and on the second night my wife joined in on an open jam with a bunch of other fiddlers. The next day we went to Fortress Louisbourg, North America's largest archaeological reconstruction site, replete with living history exhibits and people in period costume.

In Louisbourg, one of the things you can do is FIRE A CANNON!, and my friends, I signed up and did just that!

My wife said I didn't stop smiling for the entire day, and heck I'm still smiling about it now. The soot marks on my face denote that I'm a cannoneer in training. I really need to get a hat like that.

We headed south to Halifax and had dinner with Kris Moulton (BGG user krismoulton) and his lovely family, on the same day he announced a second location for The Board Room Cafe. We spent a day in Lunenberg, a UNESCO world heritage site and took photos of ourselves on the Bluenose II. We carried on to Digby and took the ferry across the Bay of Fundy to St. John and drove up to Fredericton where we had a delightful night on a haunted hike downtown.

We ended up back in Quebec City after stopping at my daughter's favourite spot along the St. Lawrence and arrived home on Sunday night, late. We put about 4200km (a little over 2600 miles) on the rental car, took a little over 2000 photos, and have a lifetime of family memories.

In Quebec City, we of course visited the Citadel and the Plains of Abraham. We had a great tour guide (part of the museum experience at the Plains of Abraham) who explained how and why Quebec City fell in a way that was a lot more interesting than the very dry and dull way they present Canadian history in high school. Wolfe was a bastard. meeple

I want to play A Few Acres and Quebec 1759 now, but what I really want to find is a good book.

Quebec City always has something going on. Street performers, outdoor music festivals, great food, fun museums.

The St. Lawrence is huge. Just huge. And the Gulf of St. Lawrence has great tides and interesting rock formations along the shore.

New Brunswick is proud of its Acadian heritage, and the French there is even stranger than some of the strange Quebec French I know.

Prince Edward Island is charming, delightful, and bucolic. It also is a maze of roads that all look alike and Google Maps will get you there. I could easily spend a couple of weeks just on PEI. The water of the Atlantic is much warmer than the Pacific.

Nova Scotia is full of history and great music. Louisbourg is an entire day and worth every minute. It was taken twice by the English, the second time in 1758. The French had learned their lesson from the first go around and increased the garrison to 4000 troops and did some earthworks on the landward side (the Achilles heel of the fortress) but when Wolfe came along with 24,000 troops, it was no contest. They held out for 7 weeks that time, a week longer than the first time over a decade earlier.

The Bay of Fundy is something that must be seen for the brain to actually acknowledge. The ferry dock at Digby was built to accommodate the 8.5m (28ft) drop in water level from high to low tide.

I've now been in every Canadian time zone, and have now been in every Canadian province at least once. I only need to get to the Northwest Territories and Nunavut to complement the Yukon and get all the territories too.

I could write on and on and on, but I'll simply stop here for now. There's so much still to process in my brain. It was a great trip.

Moar Games!
Just before we left, I received MBT, while I was gone, The Scheldt Campaign from Hollandspiel and Boudicca: The Warrior Queen came, and today FAB: Golan '73 and Secret Hitler arrived.

Return to Routine:
It's been nice to have a moderately enforced break from work and news and even BGG. This week is a short week as Monday was Labour Day. My daughter is in a new school in a new grade and settling in nicely. I'm getting back into routines at work. My wife's work is ramping up and October will be crazy just like every year.

Life is good.

I really enjoy A Few Acres of Snow. I like the historical aspect of the game. I like that there are many options that can be taken on your turn. Players can use different strategies to go after a win. You can be as war oriented as you like, or just try to expand your influence peacefully.

Here I upgraded the towns, cities, and siege markers:

Only one week left to baseball's regular season and there's still a bunch of teams in the wild card race! Can the NY Mets' patchwork rotation let them sneak in?
mbmbmbmbmb
How about A Few Acres of Snow? Many praise it as a brilliantly innovative game and seemingly just as many hate it because it's broken, with a dominant strategy.

Speaking of Wallace, I wonder about the original A Study in Emerald? Crazy theme, crazy gameplay. Some think it's fantastic, some (including me) stay far, far away.

I'm also tempted to include Five Tribes, because there is a sizable minority who despise it because it induces hellish AP in them or in frequent opponents. But there's so many gamers who feel it's a good, solid Euro that it probably doesn't fit here.
