I set up scenario 6 of Panzer last night, my first real combined arms scenario, which includes vehicles, infantry, and artillery. I'm playing with advanced rules but no optionals.

Overview of the situation at the end of turn 1:

The Soviets chose to entirely avoid the village where the Germans had sited a 75mm anti-tank gun, protected by several squads of Panzerfaust-toting infantry. Instead they hugged the opposite flank of the German line:

The Germans began trying to adjust their defenses (though there was little they could do on turn 1, with so many units on Overwatch), and move their vehicles into hull-down positions:

The 88 gunners on top of the hill are itching to light up some tanks. Not sure how long they can survive up there, once spotted, though, with no cover.

I can already see that not using the hidden units rules is a significant disadvantage to the Germans in this scenario. The Soviets knew exactly where the German gun was and how to avoid it, allowing them to advance rapidly onto the board with no casualties and bypass a good chunk of the German defense. (Obviously playing solitaire they (I) would still know what each hidden unit marker contained, but I'd try to pretend that they didnt'!)

Will continue the game over the weekend.

Start of turn 4 of Panzer scenario 6, after fixing my set up.

Overall situation, things are not looking great for the Germans:

Due to flubbed rolls, the overwatch of the Stugs/Anti-tank gun in the woods failed to do anything as the T-34s rolled over the hill/around the hedges. Now they are in deep, with T-34s ahead and on one flank and SU-76s on the other:

Meanwhile the German defenders in the village are being pummeled by the Soviet pre-planned artillery fire:

This stuff seems super deadly, and has already rubbled 2 (of 7) building hexes in the first 2 (of 5) turns of firing. Wooden buildings provide very little protection for the German defenders - I should have paid more attention to the building types during set up.

Hopefully the German arty will be able to get into the mix next turn.

The one ray of sunshine for the Germans, one of the Marders has lined up a nice flanking position on the SU-76s, one of which was already taking out by a lucky HE shell from the 88 on the hill:

Set up another Panzer scenario the other night, scenario Scenario 13: Twilight: Silesia, 1945 from Expansion 1:

After playing out a turn or so, I suffered a bit of a crisis of Panzer faith. See, there is this thing called troop quality in the game, which ranges from Green to Elite. This affects all sorts of things, from the number of commands a formation can use, to command range, to attack modifiers which can vary depending on the range band.

In all the scenarios I've played so far, both sides were seasoned, which is the middle quality and has no modifiers to attacks. In this scenario, the German quality ranges from Green to Veteran (across 4 categories), all with different modifiers and command values. Oh and by the way there is *nothing* on the counters to indicate quality.

So now every time I need to act with a unit there's an additional two-step lookup - what was the quality of this unit again? Okay and given that, let's look in the table and see what the modifiers are.

This compounds an issue that was already bothering me, that there are only 5 different infantry counter images (squad, half squad, guys with binoculars, machine gun, mortar) to cover all possible equipment and size combinations. e.g. a Seasoned Recon SMG squad will look exactly the same as a Green Infantry squad. Again one has to keep referring back to paper notes to remember who is what.

Sigh. I decided to take down the scenario and try a different game instead. I enjoy the narrative this game creates, but this aspect of it is user-unfriendly.

If this gets a reprint this year, should I get it instead of MBT? The complexity level looks about as terrifying, but surely can't be as bad given that the technology of 1945 was nowhere near as advanced as that of 1987.

I love games where you can "smell the cordite", where there is enough detail to easily suspend disbelief and imagine what's taking place before you on the paper battlefield is entirely plausible. You can make decisions and see the effect within the "paper time machine". It helps when the detail is well researched and condensed into an intuitive and well-paced set of rules that don't get in the way of the action. Quite a design challenge, and the battlefields of game design are littered with casualties. Panzer is not one of them. It's polished and feels fresh, despite (or maybe because of?) being a very traditional wargame. The data cards are a thing of beauty and now you can know just how deadly the "88" really was.

When Panzer originally came out, I gave it a pass. Then the third expansion was published, and as I have always been more interested in the Western front, I started to consider buying Panzer, but it was OOP. Then MBT and its expansions were announced. I had the original MBT many years past, and so, seeing the high quality presentation that GMT was giving the Panzer series, I pre-ordered. Then, when Panzer was put up for re-print, I caved in and pre-ordered that too. Now that Panzer is close to being re-published, I decided that it would be good to pick up the Panzer expansions during this sale. So that's my story!

Panzer is a German language word that means armour. It is also used to mean "armored fighting vehicle" or tank (the military vehicle). It is occasionally used in English and some other languages as a loanword in the contexts of German military.

The German tank force was an amazing success due to tactical innovation more than tank quality. Many of their later tanks outclassed Allied armor, delivering more casualties than they took in most engagements due to the impressive training and the excellent tactics of German tank crews.

Using Blitzkrieg tactics, Guderian, Paul Ludwig Ewald von Kleist and other field commanders such as Rommel broke the hiatus of the Phoney War in a manner almost outside the comprehension of the Allied — and, indeed, the German — High Command. In actual tank-on-tank encounters the German armor performed poorly, but as a coherent unit, the combined arms tactic of the Blitzkrieg shocked the Allies.

The German Panzer force at the start of World War II was not especially impressive. Only 4% of the defense budget was spent on armored fighting vehicle (AFV) production. Guderian had planned for two main tanks: the Panzer III, which was in production; and the Panzer IV with a 75 mm gun, which was not. The design work for the Panzer IV had begun in 1935 and trials of prototypes were undertaken in 1937, but by the time of the invasion of Poland only a few hundred 'troop trial' models were available. The development work was then halted and limited production was begun by Krupp in Magdeburg (Grusonwerk AG), Essen and Bochum in October 1939 with 20 vehicles built. However, even that low number could not be sustained, with production dropping to ten in April 1940. Production also dropped because metal was very expensive and not many citizens were donating it.

Panzer Battles by Major Gen. Von Mellenthin
This is the account of a staff officer who pretty much saw the whole war in every German campaign and served directly beneath Rommel in Africa.

OR

Not this exact cover, but this book. A great read on everything you could have wanted to know about the opening shots of War Between the States.

Having fun finally getting this to the table, and doing it this time with the 'learn by pushing counters' approach instead of my usual "study the rule book before doing anything."

Since I haven't played tactical games before, I'm also working on the whole concept of creating local imbalance and "shooting through the keyhole".

Once I've learned the system I'm even considering getting some micro armor as a way of drawing some "OCS Only" hex gamers who play miniatures into this game too.

Seth taught the basic game to a group of us and then played through a basic low unit count scenario of German against Russian tanks. The Russians overextended their line and were severely hammered retreating into the hills. This is truly the ASL of tank warfare, and we only scratched the basics.
