N/A Roads and Boats x1 New!

On Roads and Boats : i own this game for years but i didn't manage to find the time and opportunity to unpunch and organize the components.....until the last week-end.

So i read the rulebook again and played the solo scenario "A river runs through it". The scenario book says that the top score was 260 and i did very poorly....... Only 31 !!!!

Mistakes i made:

1) Transport infrastructure : i built wagons but apparently this is not the right means of transport given the fact that the map is small. I have built roads and bridges almost everywhere but this is certainely overkill. This is too slow because we only have 20 turns at our disposal.

2) Resources : i have built a mine in the NE tile, just next to my starting tile. The mine produced 3 iron and 3 gold. I didn't manage to transform it into money/share indeed. I have contributed only 1 brick to the wonder but this is certainely the best way to score a lot of point : sure, it is expansive but i was able to produce a ton of boards (i used some to feed my wagon factory and to build my secondary buildings but at the end of the game, a lot of boards were unused).

Thoughts : Wow ! What a brain burner ! The rules is pretty straightforward (all is very thematic and make sense so it is easy to get into it) but it is not only a matter of resources conversion, tech tree, efficiency, ramp up but also logistics. In a way, it is Antiquity with logistics.

I have played some heavy resources conversion game (Le Havre, Fields of Arle come to mind) but this one is higher on the heavy side. Not by the rules themselves but by the snownball effect : the more you have possibilities in term of resources production, resources use and means of transport, the more your are overhelmed but at the time you must be focused on your long term goals and you will have to make some choice.

The tech tree is pretty straightforward (exploit wood and stone to build and feed secondary buildings like coal burner to produce fuel (to make coins from gold though mint) and papermill to make paper (to develop yourself with geese but also to make stock from coins and paper).

Transportation is the heart of the game because you can't do a single thing without a means of transport : they are not only used to transport goods but they also are required in order to own resources (resources on tiles are not yours), to build buildings, to move geese .

Roads & Boats is moslty and firstly a game of logistics.

I own &Cetera but is that game requires an extension ?

Excellent solo play -- scenarios in the core rulebook, and many more online -- often with "high scores" tracked.

Mixed emotions week! I've been fairly uncomfortable with my knee which has limited me from doing much outside of playing Skyrim (but who doesn't love an excuse for a good Skyrim binge?) but on the other hand I've received some delicious new acquisitions!

The highlight of my week was finally securing myself a copy of Roads & Boats. My thanks to our friend Jimmy for bringing this copy to my attention. The seller had listed it in a geeklist auction but had not listed it in the marketplace, so I didn't see it was for sale while the auction was active. It was a 3rd edition printing located within Canada which included the & Cetera expansion and the cover is signed by Joris. This one flew under my radar for too long and I only got an idea for what it was all about more recently and was dismayed at the fact that while there were a handful of copies for sale, none would ship to Canada or there might have been one or two euro sellers but the cost of shipping was going to be as much as an 18XX game. Anyway, Jimmy spotted this auction for me, now I've got it and I've been reading the rules and think I'll be following their advice and just starting a small solo game without having a full ruleset knowledge and fill in the details as I go. I think that another player from my local 18XX/Heavy Games group has a copy and I am sure that a third player would be interested in it because he loves transport tycoon type video games and he loves 18XX so there's nothing not to love in a transport logistics board game!

That wasn't all the excitement of the week. I also received a copy of Winsome Games second 18XX game, 1857. My hat is once again tipped to Jimmy, who sold this one to me for a fair sum. I'd managed to pick up the other two Winsome 18XX games but this one eluded me thus far and is the one of the trio that probably interests me most. I would like to try to carve out a nice 8hr 18XX game day sometime in the near future to run through this and another smaller 18XX.

This week I actually played with other people, too. While Naomi and I vacationed in Portland, we had a couple of new friends from our area come check on and feed our cats each day. I met this couple through a local board gaming group on facebook and we'd gamed a couple times before. This weekend we went over for a nice spread of meats and cheeses (it is best in life!), fruit, salad and tea and some board gaming. Medici is one of a small set of quick, simple euro games that I really enjoy. Usually I don't want to play lighter fare more than a few times. Even if they are brilliant designs, I just need a little more to engage me generally - and often the weak theme applications can be off-putting. All the same, there is a necessary group of lighter games that I count on as easy to teach and play in a social setting and Medici is one of them. It also stands apart from other games for me because I really don't care for auction-heavy games generally, but Medici is really just auctions. The once-around auction style is unique and enjoyable.

Other games I group in the same category as Medici that I consider to be great mainstay entry level games are For Sale (another auction game I can't help but love), and Bohnanza. Anyway, Medici was fun and it was interesting playing it after so many years and not remembering at all what valuations were. I had to start from scratch and wing it. Scores were pretty close all around the table and Naomi took a win.

we were playing Spectaculum just to kill time until Nathan finished his game and was able to set up R&B. Roads & Boats has become an annual tradition for Nathan, Amanda and me. This year, Brett joined us to make four and Nathan chose a neat 4-player map. It was an art heavy map with only 3 mountains on the board and no fixed starting locations. It was only my second time playing with art, but I did well. Nathan, of course, still crushed us 700 to 400 (me) to 240 to 190. Play time was around 5 hours. I'm not sure what made the game run long.

Saturday night was my traditional game of Roads and Boats with Amanda and Jimmy. Brett joined us and we had a stellar game. I picked a very low mountain map (there were only 3 mountain tiles) to push the art expansion concepts. As a result I built this crazy art engine. I still managed to accidentally mint a coin. I guess there's only so many new tricks this dog can learn.

1 unplayed expansion for Roads & Boats (Rated _7⅔_; 3 plays; most recently 2016-03-30):

& Cetera (Acquired 2006-08)

This is very very plausible. Like: next time we play Roads & Boats. Which I'd expect to occur in the next eight to ten months, at worst.

Roads & Boats was game 5/5.
To round out the evening, we setup a two player "friendly" game of R&B. Marcus hadn't played before, so I wanted to let him go while I struggled to complete the game.
About 3 hours.

I was able to do pretty well here, as it was my 10th or so play of this guy. We had zero conflict, but we were so focused on what we were doing, I'm not sure if we could have even thought about the other player. I did get a mine built first though; that screwed him over.

Logistics upon logistics upon transportation logistics. Just what a stellar design! 17 years later and this is so great. I was two turns away from producing my second stock bond. So sad. If only I hadn't built something in round 5 or 7 I would have had the extra time. Love this game.

My father spent a long time as a transportation logistics consultant for IBM. Nowadays he manages the distribution of radiological medicine for a pharmaceutical company. One day I want to sit down and play this game with him, just to see how completely he destroys me.

Like Food Chain Magnate, I would like to play this one much more, but this one has the advantage of a solo option. Still, I'd like to play with other people more often, because I like the more confrontational side of the game.

This could use an app. Could somebody please make me an app for this game? Thank you.

14 new games played in August. That's a lot more than the rest of the months this year since I'm trying to play what I have and like more. But of course I have also bought some new games and played both those and others in my collection that I hadn't tried before so only 2 of the 14 are not my own games. Mind you, some of the 12 won't be my games for long now that I've tried them...

I chose Roads & Boats as my game of the month but to be honest it could have been any of these 3:

All three are very good games that I enjoyed immensely and stand a chance of making my top 10 games of the year list. I look forward to playing them again - and to try other maps with Age of Steam - hopefully ones where I do better too. Medina (second edition) is just one of those beautiful old school German games that I love. And it looks great too.

Below these are four good games that I expect to play more in the future:

万猫の豊明かり (Feast of Ten Thousand Cats) is yet another small Japanese game with beautiful components. It comes in three variants: Beginner, Advanced, Experienced. We only tried the beginner variant but still liked it. It takes a round or two to get the internal logic of the game because the mechanisms aren't very thematic but after it clicks it does have some fun decisions. Light but not as light as many Japanese games. A friend brought over his Lost Cities and we played 3 games on the trot. I need to get a copy for ourselves. I played Via Nebula thrice, once with all player counts. 3 or 4 is definitely better than with 2. It's a simple family game that looks great but surprisingly also is quite good. Let's see after 5 more games but so far it's one I'll keep to play with family and at work. In a Grove is another fun Oink game. From reading the rules I had no idea about how the gameplay would feel like so to my surprise I liked it much more than expected. Fun little deduction game like their TROLL which I like even better.

A few that I like but need more plays of to find out exactly how much:

ヘッジホッグジレンマ (Hedgehog's Dilemma) looks gorgeous and simple but the rules are so badly translated that we messed them up badly anyway. So this one needs to be played with the correct rules that are now available for download here. I played two games of Hex with my girlfriend but it was quite obvious that we needed a better understanding of the basic strategies to enjoy it. Mythotopia has been criticised a lot for its endgame. We had no problems with that in our two-player game but with more I can see it might happen so I'll wait judging it till I've tried a multiplayer game of it. Gameplay was good though.

And four that I didn't like for various reasons:

To me, Blood Rage is an overhyped game that some plastic demon decided to vomit on. I don't like plastic figures so the visuals of the game would never entice me to play it but a lot of people say the mechanisms are actually quite good. I found them mediocre. I bought Paris Connection because the people on Heavy Cardboard enjoy it as a filler. I didn't really. I have other games with this weight that I enjoy more, are faster to play and come in a much smaller box. Cat's Party is another Japanese microgame about cats. This one is very simple and not that fun. With more fish cards it would have been but as it is there is very little tension here. Rights is the first Oink game I didn't like much. At least in a 5-player game there is very little control which again removes tension from the game.

Game #6 for my September 7x7:
Played the first puzzle scenario "A river runs through it" for all 7 games. Still couldn't beat the highscore but it was close.

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Play 1: 160 pts
Started in the center forest same as my first time playing last month. Improved my previous score by 10 points but more importantly I figured out that this strategy is going nowhere.

Play 2: 170 pts
Still started in the same space but was using rafts and an oil rig. Seemed better but the starting spot seemed not great and I made many small mistakes.

Play 3: 290 pts (Maybe took an extra turn or something. Anyway the result must be botched)
For all my remaining plays I was starting on the field right of the forest. For this and the next play I built rafts on the field below. Problem was that I had to spend too many turns making paper.
Play 4: 200 pts

Play 5: 270 pts
Play 6: 270 pts
Play 7: 270 pts
The last 3 plays I had 8 rows in the wonder, 1 stock, 1 coin and 3 gold. I mostly made some minor adjustments but followed the same strategy since play 3. Last play seemed very good but I was still one turn away from getting a second coin. At this point I'm not sure what to do. I might try again some other time or look for a solution online and see where I went wrong.

Getting through 7 plays was quite the commitment but time was flying as I had so much fun with this game. And this was just the first of many scenarios.
The best thing about R&B is also its biggest problem: You have to play a scenario over and over again and slowly improve until you find the perfect solution. This requires you to stick with it for a while instead of playing once every few months.
thumbsup Anyway, love the game. This has definitely found a place in my top 10 games.

In collection since 2015-09-05.

My partner was away for the summer, and I bought several of the type of civ games that we'd been playing recently. How sweet! And actually, we've played most of them. The rules to this one went in one ear and out the other when I read them, though.

Good, good games. We've played a lot of St Petersburg when we started the hobby. Second edition seems very good - loved my one play with the Market included. Sail to India, Machi Koro Harbour and Urbion were quite OK, they need more plays. Concordia and Marco Polo are awesome. And of course Roads & Boats. A lot of work, a lot of fun.

Great games! But I really need to play R&B again. Did play it some more, but it's been a while. Machi Koro Harbour is played a lot more (we play with both expansions; always). The others got some play, but wouldn't mind playing some more.
