In collection since 2015-09-05.

My partner was away for the summer, and I bought several of the type of civ games that we'd been playing recently. How sweet! And actually, we've played most of them. The rules to this one went in one ear and out the other when I read them, though.

Good, good games. We've played a lot of St Petersburg when we started the hobby. Second edition seems very good - loved my one play with the Market included. Sail to India, Machi Koro Harbour and Urbion were quite OK, they need more plays. Concordia and Marco Polo are awesome. And of course Roads & Boats. A lot of work, a lot of fun.

Machi Koro Harbour
Urbion
Sail to India

Great games! But I really need to play R&B again. Did play it some more, but it's been a while. Machi Koro Harbour is played a lot more (we play with both expansions; always). The others got some play, but wouldn't mind playing some more.

Back to normal after a couple of weeks of travelling. I played just one game during the week and some good things during the weekend. All with my girlfriend.

Wednesday I bought Five Tribes: The Artisans of Naqala for Five Tribes so we played a game with it in the evening:

Usually, I'm not all that fond of buying expansions but I had read some of my geekbuddies found this one necessary so I did. It was okay but I have no problem playing without it either.

Friday my girlfriend and I had a short day of work so in the afternoon after we had finished working we pulled out a couple of card games that we hadn't played for too long:

x 2

Also back to normal for Greed with one win each after I had won the last 3 or 4 games of it. And both games were really close. I really do not understand the lack of love for this excellent combo game by DXV. With two at least it's great. Koi-Koi we played with our beautiful new Hanafuda cards that Kelsey Cretcher has made. Our 8th game and my girlfriend's first ever win. Good on her!

Saturday we spent 5-6 hours on our first ever game of:

We chose the recommended 'simple' beginners' map for two players. My girlfriend loved building her civ up on her own but I would have liked more interaction but for this first go at it it was fine. We got greedy and wanted to make more points instead of trying to rush the endgame a bit more so it lasted for 33 rounds which was probably 10 too many - especially since my girlfriend thought the end was earlier so she mistimed her engine a bit.

Sunday afternoon we played our first game of:

I bought a month back because the pound was low and because it is by Wallace. Very light for what I usually like and two-player isn't the best count but it might be okay with 4. Let's see how long I'll keep it for...

OK, now THIS is rare. I own Roads and Boats, but I want the one-of-a-kind copy pictured here. Large, individually hand-painted hexagons, hand-crafted transporters, road, bridge, and wire pieces so no overlay is needed, and totally re-sourced art. OK, this is cheating because this is my copy, but whatevs.

Long before a certain heavy, fast-food-themed game was climbing the charts; before Uwe Rosenberg was touting Antiquity as an inspiration for Agricola; even before BGG was created, there was a Splotter game spoken of in hushed, reverent tones amongst euro gamers across the land. I wish I could say that I cut my gamer teeth on Roads & Boats back in the day, but I was 8 years old when the game was released in '99, and I wouldn't go on to start playing hobby games for at least another decade. Anyhow, in a hobby infatuated with the cult of the new, Roads & Boats is old as crap.

The game has been on my radar for the last few years, as for whatever reason, I've always kind of perceived it as the king of euro games--I knew that not many people would be rushing to play it with me, but damn--wouldn't that huge box look great on my shelf? Isn't it so quirky that you have to build up your network on the backs of a few donkeys and a flock of geese? I've never played a true crayon rail game, but the dry erase marker fascinated me--all together, Roads & Boats seemed excessive for the sake of being excessive, a testament to the joy of pushing cubes, a proud inspiration for and celebration of every frowny euro dude that's ever graced the cover of a dull, gray/brown box.

As I fell in love with solo gaming, I fell more in love with Uwe Rosenberg. The resource conversion featured prominently in Le Havre, Ora et Labora, and Fields of Arle really struck a chord with me, and as I read more about the mechanic and his games, I kept coming across comparisons to Roads & Boats. When I learned that the game revolved around resource conversion coupled with pickup and delivery (another one of my favorite mechanisms), my interest was thoroughly piqued. I rarely buy games that don’t allow for solo play, but Roads & Boats comes with a handful of solo scenarios, so I had no choice: I had to have the game in my collection.

The thing about Rosenberg’s games is that if you want goods, you typically take an action to get them. Once the goods are in your possession, they stay in your possession until you use them for something else. If you want to convert them into something else, you often take another action to do so. There can be a lot of steps to the process, and sometimes it takes quite a few actions to get from point A to point B. Roads & Boats takes it to the next level by adding a spatial element and logistics problems to the equation. If you want to build a road, you need stone. If you want stone, you have to build a quarry on a rock hex, but to do that, you have to use one of your transporters (such as a donkey or raft) to haul some boards over to the rock area. Once the quarry produces stone, you have to take it back over to the area where you’d like to construct a road. Hopefully you don’t have to cross any rivers with your land transporters along the way, or else you’ll have to use that stone to build a bridge instead. At the beginning of the game, there are never enough resources, and then once your production ramps up, you probably won’t have enough transporters to carry them all, or the transporters you do have can’t cross more than a few hexes in a single turn. Oh, and by the way, if you leave behind a few resources that won’t fit on your wagon, raft, or donkey, you opponents are free to swoop in and take those resources for themselves--you don’t own anything that you’re not carrying on one of your transporters.

There are only a few goods that are worth wealth points at the end of Roads & Boats. You can also earn wealth points via a “wonder,” which is constructed with goods sacrificed by all players over the course of the game. Gold, coins, and stock are the most valuable goods, and they’re all interrelated: you need gold to produce coins, and you need coins to produce stock. In each solo scenario, there’s very much a right way to play: there is no randomness, so each map has a solution that yields the highest production of wealth. Typically, I’m all for games where you have to be as efficient as you can with a randomized setup, but after playing a two-player session of Roads & Boats, I was dying to check out the solo play. Three solitaire games later, I’m thoroughly obsessed. I’ve played the same scenario three times, and despite the lack of variety, I’m dying to play on this map again. It helps that while my score has increased with every play, I’ve still only managed to score 50% of the highest known score for the map I’m playing on. Once I tire of that map, there are a few more in the base game and a handful of others that have been published online, as well as guidelines for creating your own maps.

Roads & Boats isn’t for everyone. After my first play, I was intrigued, but didn’t find the game to be overwhelmingly fun. Each play is an attempt to solve a long, drawn-out efficiency problem. In games like Agricola or Le Havre, there’s so much to do and not enough time to do it. Roads & Boats is the same way, but on a bigger scale: I have yet to succeed in producing a single stock over the course of a game, despite my best efforts. Every move matters, and I clearly haven’t been making the right ones. But I’m getting better, and I find that very rewarding.

What Roads & Boats lacks in soul, it makes up for with a rock-solid foundation that takes what you’re willing to put into the game and gives back accordingly. My first play was overwhelming, but with a few plays under my belt, I’m finding everything to be much more manageable. As a bonus I can play a solo session in 60-90 minutes, meaning I don’t have to rule out weeknight plays. This is honestly the only game I really want to play at the moment, and I can’t wait to dive back in at the next opportunity.

I consider myself a lucky man since I have a girlfriend who doesn't mind learning something like this with me - and actually enjoying it too even though she most often loses. I bought pretty much the last copy of Roads and Boats at Essen last year but until yesterday it had been languishing on our shelves. I tried to get it played before but most people aren't really up for a 5 hour heavy game.

Endgame state playing the recommended two-player setup for beginners. Can you spot Totoro? I would have liked a more interactive map but for a first it worked well and my girlfriend prefers to build up her engine in peace so a very good place to begin. Of course we had to try out some different things without knowing how best to strategise so it took a long time to play. We probably should have tried to place more bricks in the wonder but we got greedy and wanted our civilisations to grow as much as possible so in the end I had 30-40 resources on my home tile that weren't used. Doesn't sound like good optimisation really. Unfortunately my girlfriend had misunderstood the place we needed to reach on the wonder meaning she mistimed her growth completely and couldn't follow my engine in the end. We enjoyed it though and will play again.

Includes the expansion & Cetera.

I am a big Splotter fan, but this heavyweight logistics game leaves me too exhausted. Lots of people love this game, though, and I recognize that there's some innovative and cool stuff going on in this box. Speaking of in the box, you've probably never seen a game with this many bits. This is the Fourth edition. I'm a bit wary of letting this one go, hence the starting bid.

Because of the huge number of bits, I have not inventoried this game. I would be surprised if anything were missing, but I don't guarantee completion for this item.

Starting bid = $70

Condition Notes: I have corrected the misprinted coins using the official patch kit, and they look great.

Shipping Note: Enormous box and quite heavy.

Experience not required -- looks like this is going to get played at least twice! Not sure that I'll be in both, but if no one who's in the second game has played it, I'm happy to teach it. It's actually a fairly simple game to teach; playing well is another story.

I'll be running a R&B game with the expansion (& Cetera). For those that haven't played with it, the expansion is a collection of modules. My game will focus on artwork production and we'll play with whatever modules make sense. Experience isn't necessarily required as I'll likely be teaching at least some of the new bits. I'll try to run this at the same time as Jimmy's game as scheduling allows.

Rules: https://www.boardgamegeek.com/file/download/jtfwuqmtr/RB3Eru...
FAQ: https://www.splottershop.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=...

Reminders and Clarifications
1) Any land tile may be chosen as a starting place, provided there is at least one empty tile between you and your nearest neighbor.
- Rulebook, Page 4, Starting Places And Resources

2) After players produced what they want during the production phase, coal burners and paper mills will use all remaining boards on the tile before starting to process trunks.
- Rulebook, Page 8, Secondary Producers

3) At the end of the production phase, a player may own no more than eight transporters; no more than five of these may be land transporters, and no more than five may be water transporters. As soon as a player owns too many transporters, he has to put excess transporters out of use immediately. Only a transporter that is currently at a transporter factory can be put out of use: the transporter is destroyed by simply taking it off the board.
- Rulebook, Page 9, Transporter Production

4) Livestock (donkeys, geese) will reproduce if left as a pair on an empty pasture tile. A tile is empty if it contains no building, goods or other transporters. In the presence of a building, goods or other transporters, donkeys or geese do not reproduce, not even if they are on the other side of a river. However, roads, walls and a home marker may be present.
- Rulebook, Page 9, Transporter Production

5) A docked boat can only leave the tile by moving to the sea tile it came from.
- Rulebook, Page 11, Boats

6) A goose will follow any transporter moving out of its tile, if the owner of the transporter wants it to. However, geese cannot be left alone at sea: a goose at sea will always follow a transporter moving out of its tile, if no other transporter remains with the goose (but geese can be dropped on an oil-rig, of course).
- Rulebook, Page 12, Geese

7) A boat on sea, which is not docked, pays two extra piles of stone or board to build or demolish a wall.
- Rulebook, Page 14, Walls

8) Goods used to buy bricks in the wonder must be expended from the player's starting tile. This tile must also contain at least one of that player's transporters.
- Rulebook, Page 15, Wonder Phase

9) Research may be produced during the production phase at the cost of two geese and one paper. No building is needed. The geese and the paper must be on the same tile, which must also contain one of the player's transporters. If two geese and a paper are left on a tile, that is, if they are not being carried by a transporter, both geese and paper are used by the game and disappear. This leads to a great increase in metaphysical understanding which has no practical relevance in the game.
- Rulebook, Page 16, Producing Research

Tips
1) It is advisable to select a starting tile close to rock, woods, and pasture.

ROADS & BOATS

Absolutely LOVE this game! My #3 of all time!

A nice 2 player map that was very interesting! Started on a tiny island so shipping was required for EVERYTHING!

Trouble is the first couple of moves were pretty similar, but once we got to the bigger island stuff started changing.

The biggest risk I made was cutting off my geese supply at 6 by putting my paper factory on my breeding area. Stuck with 3 tech so I had to make them count!

Got my mine up first! Hopefully this will work!

Got a wagon factory and a rowboat factory to get the shipping going heavy. Wife built a mint so I started wagoning some bricks down there to get use of it. Sucked a lot of time. Hopefully it will pay off.

Got a second mine built and refilled my old mine with 4 gold each from a specialized mine! Gotta get that GOLD!!!

I was on track to get two stock certificates so my wife had to rush the end of the game with bricks. The race was on!

One turn away from my second stock in the production round!

Wife killed it in the bricks but it wasn't enough for all the coins and gold I had! I beat her in turn order for the last coin we were racing for 294 - 260! Had turn order been different she would have won!

Awesome game!!!
