Continuing my Kids' Games theme from the previous thread:

Hoot Owl Hoot! a co-operative game for preschoolers, like a slightly simplified version of Max. I've been wanting to get a copy of this. $1.19 complete

I also picked up a couple train games for the theme, not the gameplay-quality:

Chuggington Let's Ride the Rails. I had left this on the shelf the past two weeks because it has a viewing hole in the front of the box and I assumed a bunch of pieces must have fallen out the hole (and the game-play was just so terribly designed in the last Chuggington game I'd gotten...), but when my little one set up the entire 4 foot board and busily drove the trains around, I was impressed that all the animal chits were there, and had to get it. Turns out its only missing the instructions and one non-essential token (and yes, the gameplay design again doesn't quite do what they want it to.) $3.19

Thomas Making Tracks Game. They put a lot into the components (the board has a hole punched in every space, for the peg on the bottom of the track tiles to fit into), and I really want to make a game out of this. Right now, its spin the spinner and lay track, and when that's done, spin the spinner and move train. Track laying is multiplayer-solitaire as everyone has their own section, so no blocking or sharing tracks (and the tracks don't even branch), so how to come up with a rules-variation with some meaningful choices?? $3.19 complete, track tiles unopened, instructions torn in half.

All Goodwill.

Long Time No See

Dumb and Dumber engages the most puerile and immature corners of my brain, to the point that I almost feel guilty for finding it funny. It revels in all the most infantile humor, including slapstick and bathroom jokes. But I have to admit...I'm laughing the whole time. The story is nonsensical, because I don't even see how two people this stupid could even survive in the world as long as they have, but if you're applying sense and logic as an argument against this movie then you've already lost. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are simply amazing in the movie because they never once break character, and fully invest themselves as if Harry and Lloyd might actually be real people. Lauren Holly is great as the love interest in the film, because she manages to be convincing as someone who might politely smile or laugh at their dumbness and give them the false impression that she likes them. I appreciate that the rest of the world in the movie is serious, and there are dramatic things going on (including a kidnapping) which keep the movie grounded. This helps the whole film from going completely off the rails when Harry and Lloyd are not acting logically. The struggle I have with Dumb and Dumber is just that I'm not in middle school any more, so some of the childish humor just won't make me laugh any more. But if you like really stupid humor, from really stupid guys, then I can't recommend Dumb and Dumber enough.

Hoot Owl Hoot! is a cooperative game where players try to bring "owls" home before the "sun" comes up. It's a board game rather than a card game, and has cardboard player pieces. Although this is a kid's game, it has some nice features, and hopefully it isn't too 'juvenile' for adult tastes. And thinking about kids games, Ravensburger, Haba, GameWright, and eeBoo make great board games; no small, sharp, heavy, or breakable parts. Some examples are Dracken-Stark, Rivers-Roads-Rails, Scrambled States of America, and eeBoo Animal Bingo. Many games are designed for 4 players, but can handle 8 or 12 if you combine two or three sets. Scrambled States requires reading, but comes with fun maps with clues to the answers.

N/A  Hoot Owl Hoot! x2 NEW!

Christmas day spent at friend's house. Benjamin got a new game from his uncle. It's a cute little cooperative game that makes use of the "ladders" mechanic in Cartagena. It's simple, intended as a kid's game, but does actually have decisions to make, so it's an improvement over Candy Land

On my mind: Travel to England.

This is a great introductory strategy game. I feel like it's a kids version of Forbidden Island. She is starting to understand how to best move the owls to maximize their distance. The last game we played was on the hardest setting and one more card would have cost us the game. It was a big win for us and I was very proud of some of the choices she had made during the game.

Dust Level: 1 Year 7 Months

My oldest kid just doesn't like playing board games much... but my middle child does and she's getting old enough to start trying games my oldest abandoned! Hoot Owl Hoot is probably my favorite kid's game as it is a co-op with potential for interesting move chains that becomes quite challenging as you try to compensate and plan for your child's sub-optimal moves. I appreciate a kid's game that isn't entirely luck based that I can still play "full speed" (they are still working on being gracious losers like their father... laugh ). Eliza had a good time getting all the owls home before bedtime so I doubt this will be getting dusty again until she outgrows it.

Hate putting this on here, but this is currently one of my 3 year old's absolute favorite things to do. For the purposes of trying to list out 10 games that I think i'll actually get 10 plays in on, this definitely goes in the "yes" pile.

10 of 10 plays.

Last played: 5/31/15

I'm certain I'll be playing this one at least weekly until I'm blue in the face.

Date Played: 1/10/15

The Game:
A cooperative kids game where you have between 3 and six owls (your choice) that you must return to the nest before sunrise. Every player has three cards, all colors, and choose a card to move an owl to that color. If that color is occupied, the moving owl can fly over it to the next available color. If you draw a sun card, the sun movers closer to sunrise. Get all your owls before sunrise to win.

Opinion:
My wife and I love this game, so do the kids. It is beautifully made, teaches colors, strategy, cooperation, and it's just fun to fly the little cardboard owls.

Play:
We were playing this as a larger story-driven, long-term gaming adventure. There was a special goal that at least 14 suns had to pass in order to move onto the next adventure. We achieved that, and were 1 owl and 1 space away from getting the last sixth owl into the next. We were so close.

I really like the premise of this game. Miss A is understands all of the rules and likes playing when it is her turn. She struggles to see how other players can help each other but this strategy will come in time.

We played this on the same day as 3 roll+move games and I appreciate how much more enjoyment some decision making brings to the game.

Six owls on the board are trying to make it home before the sun rises. Players are dealt 3 cards (a colour or a sun) which are kept face up in front of them. A player must play any sun cards before they use their colours (a sun card moves the sun one location closer to rising). If the player has no sun cards, they select which colour card to play. Then they move any owl to that colour. If the closest location of that colour is already occupied, then they move to the next vacant location of that colour. Then the player picks up a new card and puts it face up to replace the used card. The movement is the same as Cartagena.

I think this is my favourite kids game so far, out of the ones we have played.

My Thoughts:
This is one of Raishi's favorite games. He loves playing Hoot Owl Hoot and has a blast playing it. His favorite part of the game is when we inventively loose when playing on super impossible difficulty. His face filled with unbridled joy when we flip the last sun card is a sight to behold. Stubborn as he is, he simply refuses to play any other way no matter how many times we explain that since we already know we're going to lose before we even start playing, we should play on a less difficult setting. Nope! Six owls or he won't play. For the rest of the sane world, Hoot Owl Hoot is a super cute, simple to play, relaxing family style game. Let me tell you more about it.

In Hoot Owl Hoot! the players want to move all the owls back to their nest before the sun rises and the new days begins. Each player receives three cards; the fifty-card deck includes 36 color cards (six each in six colors) and 14 sun cards. Players keep their cards face up in front of them so that they can work together to strategize how to move. If a player has a sun card, on her turn she must discard the sun and move the sun token one space; if she has all color cards, she discards any one color card, then moves any owl to the next open space of that color. If an owl "flies" over an owl on a space of that color on its way to the next open space, all players make a hooting sound!

Just some kids/family games this weekend.

One game of Hoot Owl Hoot! with my wife and son. We played with 4 owls (the easy setting), and it should have been a cakewalk. Thanks to 4 consecutive Sun cards to start the game, it turned into a nailbiter.

One "game" of The Game of Life: A Jedi's Path with my son. He made up his own rules and incorporated some Star Wars Legos. It was completely nonsensical, but he had fun.

One game of UNO with my wife and son.

One game of Skip-Bo with my son and mother-in-law.
