Place 97
(Revealed 09/15)

Vassili meanwhile made one last attempt at Alhambra, but finished 3rd and failed to advance.

He then played Football Strategy, losing 23-16.

He finished up his tournament slate for the day with a second win in Splendor, securing himself a spot in the quarterfinals.

Eric played a brutal game of Circus Maximus (is there any other kind?), ending with dead horses.

For the last few years, I've played in the Monday afternoon Football Strategy heat. This year I got paired with 11-time champion Bruce Reiff's daughter, Nicole. Nicole is no slouch herself, having won Slapshot and Battle Cry in previous years. But in this game, I got into her hear more than she got into mine, and managed to pull away late in the game for the win.

Normally, I'd advance to play someone else, but since I wanted to ensure that I played in the first heat of one of my must-play events right afterward (learning the lesson of Kremlin last year), so I dropped out. Sorry everyone!

And yes, it's...

More FOOTBALL!

(and no, I may not be done yet- have you looked at my collection???)

Somehow managed to save the best for last- of these three games anyway.

As the name in the corner implies, this has Sports Illustrated all over it. Well, it is missing the swimsuit issue...

So this is what's in the box- the exact same board and plastic football as Paydirt (and I mean EXACT!) some play cards (two sets) and some defense cards (also two sets). A scorepad and die round things out.

And a book. Remember, this is the 1972 version. Remember, this is Sports Illustrated ladies...

The book starts with this:
Quote:
"Women have made great strides against discriminatory practices. With the victory over the Stag Bar, the female has finally encroached upon every living bastion of male retreat - that is, except one: the TV set."

(Remember, don't shoot the messenger! Please?)

As Cthulhu is my witness, this was actually my favorite of the bunch. No teams, no team stats to juggle through. There are actually three sets of plays to call from for the offense, and 10 defensive formations. The defense cards are labelled A-J and the person playing defense picks one. The person on offense calls out a play from one of the sheets. The defender flips the card and the result is read off. Really simple. There's a single die roll for things like kickoffs, extra points, and big plays. So that's really about it. The included rules for solitaire (two paragraphs) were a bit confusing- using different sets of defensive cards depending on where the ball was on the field- so I just shuffled the 10 cards and flipped one for first down, the next one for second down, etc. I shuffled on first downs and changes of possession.

I got in a quarter of play. One side kicked two field goals (that's in the book!) and the other side scored a touchdown. And then I started thinking about how I might make this even more to my liking... by adding more dice, of course!

But not just any dice- a 10 sided die is too obvious and random. So taking a cue from real life, I may end up using 12 sided dice (or 2 six sided- not sure how I want the odds to play out) and having them call the defense. If it's 1st and 10, I'll use one die. If it's 3 and 2, that would be different die. And I'll change up the odds on the die- when it's likely a run would be called, I'll have more run defense faces (letters, actually) on the die. And there will still be that chance that a player falls down, or something odd happens. That's where the 1 or 2 extra faces would come into play.

And then I got sidetracked to post this before Mexico & Chile squared off. I didn't quite make that...

Avalon Hill's Football Strategy, 1972 printing for $2 at GW. Complete except for the 10 yard marker which I guess is just a tiny piece of cardboard I could print out myself.

A surprisingly neat looking game. Even comes with a "wife only" dummy guide to football which I will probably read because I know jack all about tackle ball.

I think I have left this behind in the past. Recently (2-3 months back) I played this with a friend and we had a great time! So, I decided to pick it up this time. Seems complete other than missing a D6 - I can probably find one of those lying around

Box is worn but solid, and looks like it had some good use over the years, but completely playable. Even has a good number of scoresheets left!

This is the last football sim at this scale on this list that I’d suggest anybody even bother trying. Putting this game this low will be heresy for some who are in love with this old Avalon Hill classic, but it did very little for me. This is pure outguessing your opponent, with virtually no randomness at all. If I pick a draw, and you pick defense B, it’s always going to be a two yard gain. No dice, no cards, no weather, no home field advantage is going to change that. Two yards, every time. The determinism lends the game a purity that means it is THE football game that some gamers swear by. Those gamers love the intricate guess/counterguess that the game provides. It’s a bit dry and repetitive for my tastes, but I respect the game nonetheless, and I’m not going to argue if you claim it as your favorite.
