Avalon Hill's Football Strategy, 1972 printing for $2 at GW. Complete except for the 10 yard marker which I guess is just a tiny piece of cardboard I could print out myself.

A surprisingly neat looking game. Even comes with a "wife only" dummy guide to football which I will probably read because I know jack all about tackle ball.

$2.99 @ Seneca GW

I think I have left this behind in the past. Recently (2-3 months back) I played this with a friend and we had a great time! So, I decided to pick it up this time. Seems complete other than missing a D6 - I can probably find one of those lying around

Box is worn but solid, and looks like it had some good use over the years, but completely playable. Even has a good number of scoresheets left!

This is the last football sim at this scale on this list that I’d suggest anybody even bother trying. Putting this game this low will be heresy for some who are in love with this old Avalon Hill classic, but it did very little for me. This is pure outguessing your opponent, with virtually no randomness at all. If I pick a draw, and you pick defense B, it’s always going to be a two yard gain. No dice, no cards, no weather, no home field advantage is going to change that. Two yards, every time. The determinism lends the game a purity that means it is THE football game that some gamers swear by. Those gamers love the intricate guess/counterguess that the game provides. It’s a bit dry and repetitive for my tastes, but I respect the game nonetheless, and I’m not going to argue if you claim it as your favorite.

I bought this at a thrift store for only a few bucks. It's a lot of fun, but ultimately it's just an ok game. It's still not what I'm looking for in an NFL style football game experience.

I reviewed it here: [Roger's Reviews] Strategy Football: Old School Gridiron

Well, Tom, it's finally football season!

I know how you feel, Bob! What can be more exciting then a game between highly trained professionals on a field of... wait.. we just got some news in...

What is it, Tom?

Well, Bob, it seems the NFL has decided to finally put their foot down on the massive increases in payroll and expenses.

Oh? Are they putting a lid on these 100 million dollar contracts?

No, Bob, the NFL is cracking down on the.. refs. It seems the officiating crew is tired of paying for parking at the games they work on, so they are demanding that the NFL validate their parking tickets. The NFL refused, and locked them out.

Well, Tom, I'm glad that some fiscal sense has finally shown up. That $12.50 extra a game could really cut into the player's salaries and the owner's profits!

Yes, Bob... err.. well.. anyway, it says here the NFL has hired replacement refs and assured the fans and teams that there will be no change in the level of officiating due to the refs lock out.

Ok, Tom, it looks like we are about to start play! Wait! There is gunfire on the field! Security is wrestling someone to the ground.. Oh, it's one of the replacement refs! I'm getting word... Well, Tom, it seems one of the replacement refs is actually a retired track and field coach and he was just starting the ..err.. race by firing his starting pistol.

It looks like they have it straightened out, Bob, and have disarmed the referee. There is the opening kick off! He's at the 20.. the 30.. and brought down by McGuffin at the 32. Nice run back and...Bob, what is the referee doing?

Tom, it looks like he is yellow carding McGuffin for low hit.

Yellow carding? Isn't that soccer?

When you are right, you are right, Tom. Looks like they are trying to explain it to .. lets see here.. that official is Manual Ortega.. he is a soccer ref from Paraguay.

Bob, it seems Mr. Ortega can't speak English, so they are having some trouble with rules translation. Ok, it looks like to speed things up they are just letting it ride, and McGuffin now has a yellow warning against him.

Ok, play has resumed. The Broncos are lined up in a shotgun formation, Manning drops back. He fires one off.... oh! Just a little long. The receiver had his man beat, but the … wait, there is a whistle on the play.. What is going on, Tom?

Bob, I think one of the officiating crew just called Manning for Icing.

Icing?

Yes, Bob, Icing. Icing is an infraction in the sport of ice hockey. It occurs when a player shoots the puck across at least two red lines, the opposing team's goal line being the last, and the puck remains...

Tom, I know what Icing is! What .. ok, we are getting word... It seems that the back judge is actually a high school hockey coach from Canada. They are looking for a French translator..

Ok, Bob, looks like the head office called down to the field about the delay. To keep the game moving along, they are just resuming play and penalizing Denver 10 yards for .. icing.

The players seem a bit confused, but are trying to make the best of it. Ok, second down. The Broncos line up in the I formation, the running back slashes across the line and is brought down for a gain of 14. That...

Wait Bob, it seems one of the officials is in the end zone and is signaling.. yep, he is saying the field goal is good!

What field goal? It was first down! They ran the ball!

Hey, Bob, don't kill the messenger! I'm just telling you what is going on. It looks they are reviewing the play, because, as you know Bob, all scoring plays must be reviewed.

What scoring play? Tom, the Bronco's running back was tackled at their own 36 yard line!

Well, Bob, here is the announcement... How about that! The play was upheld! Ok, the Broncos are now up by 3, and it's second down and 6. The Chargers are lining up for a kickoff return.. but the Broncos are lined up in the shotgun! There is massive confusion on the field.. but it looks like the refs are letting it play out. Manning drops back.. and his tight end is wide open in the flat!

Of course he's wide open, Tom! The Chargers are expecting a kick return! That's what normally happens after a scoring play!

I know, Bob, but someone forgot to tell the refs that. It looks like the Chargers finally brought down the tight end at the 20. A gain of 46 yards on a short pass play, how about that! Wait, it looks like the Chargers coach has thrown a challenge flag on the field.

And no wonder, Tom! I'm surprised he hasn't.. wait.. what is the line judge doing?!?

It looks like, wait, let me get my binoculars... Yep, the line judge is writing a ticket to the Chargers head coach for .. littering?

Littering?!?!

Yep, it seems the line judge is actually traffic cop from Milwaukee.

Tom, the Charger's coach is livid! He is.. ok, looks like he isn't going to spend the day fighting it in court and is just paying his fine now.

What?!?!

Well, to honest, Tom, it's what I would have done. No sense it losing a day of work, driving in town..

Bob, you idiot! That's not the issue. How can a coach be fined for...

Hold it, Tom, looks like the play clock was never reset! Manning sees that and rushes his team up to the line. A quick hand off, and the running back is stopped after a minimal gain.

The Chargers did a good job stuffing the run there. Their linebacker... oh my word, what is going on now?

Tom, it looks the French referee is giving a penalty to the Bronco's running back for Charging.

Charging?!?

Tom, In Hockey, Charging is when a player violently checks another play, usually into the boards, and...

Bob, for the love of God, I know what Charging is! What I want to know is why it is being accessed against a FOOTBALL player!!

Tom, I'm just calling them like I see them. Ok, it's now second and long, and Broncos have lined up..

Bob, I only count 10 men on the Broncos team.

Well, Tom, the running back is in the penalty box for Charging, remember? So the Chargers have an opportunity for a power play here. Good chance to sack the quarterback, if you ask me.

What?!?!?!

Ok, Manning is audible out of.. and there is a whistle. Looks like, yep, the officials have signaled the end of the first quarter and are directing the players to the other end of the field.

End of the quarter?!?! Bob, we are only one and half minutes into the game!

I know, Tom, time flies when you are having fun.

Fun? FUN?!!

Yep, Fun, that's what I said Tom. Whoops, looks like the Umpire has called Manning out, and that's the end of the second inning. Any thoughts on the game before we go to commercial, Tom?

Yes, Bob, I quit.

You would think with the holidays i would have gotten more gaming in. I even went to a party Saturday night that was supposed to double as a game night, it wasn't.

So I got a half game in of Football Strategy. My brother enjoys football and board games so I bought this and 1st & Goal a while back. But we never seem to play them or have time to play a full game.

Football Strategy is a fun simple game. Maybe too simple. How to you make a sports board game that takes player error into account?

One of the oldest games in my collection and I haven't played it for over 15 years (not even sure where it is now). It was a nice idea to create a solitaire system, and although it was basically luck based it was fun.

I think American Football (you know that game that it is not played with the feet nor with a ball) has received better treatments now.

A very wordy entry from me this month. Apologies about that.

Football Strategy? Bear with me on this one....sooooo our house is full of books. For wont of space I store all my games in the loft. The loft isn't heated but it has been insulated, panelled and carpeted so it's absolutely fine for storing all kinds of interesting things. I have a space I've reserved in one of the corners for my games which I keep in semi-accessible piles. As you might imagine my new purchases are placed at the front of this space while the older games lurk at the back, and as I retrieve games for play and return them the piles get a little messy and those at the back become just a little less accessible.

I happened to been scouring the older titles for a game I was looking to lend to a friend when I stumbled across my old Avalon Hill American Football games. A long, long time ago I became interested in the sport when I was about 12 after stumbling across some pictures in a book in the local library. This was around 1980 and back then we only had three channels on the TV and you had to look very long and hard to find magazines for any sport or hobby that didn't have a huge popular following. So I really wasn't able to find much to fuel my nascent interest. At that age I was just starting to get enough Christmas/Birthday money to purchase one or two games a year via the magic of mail order. Ah, the halcyon days of 6-8 weeks delivery! After an Avalon Hill catalogue fell into my lap my young eyes soon found their to the AH sports titles: I could actually play an American Football game. In the absence of anything else, what better way for me to fan the flames of my interest!

I started with Football Strategy, then Paydirt and finally Statis-Pro Football. I probably played Paydirt most because my friends and I loved dice chucking and the colourful team charts were wonderful! But Football Strategy always wins out in the dewy eyed nostalgia contests because it was my first American Football game, and also because there were no team stats so both players had the same change of winning. With the other titles a better team obviously had a better change of beating a weaker team. And I learned much about the sport from the Football Widow's Handbook that came with Football Strategy!

After finding these titles again in the loft I decided to have a little trip down memory lane with Football Strategy. The game is not perfect but is quick and it really is fun. It has the ability to throw up some really exciting games. It's obviously much better against another player because you definitely playing the player in this title, which is part of its appeal, but it plays fine solitaire. Over the weekend I decided to play a short 8 team knock out competition. It light of any decent inspiration I named the teams after some of the solitaire titles in my collection. As one does.

I'll hand you over to our team of expert commentators, all of whom seem to have a very similar writing style....

Welcome sports fans, and anyone who doesn't mind words without pictures, to the Solo Cup! Here is the schedule:

Game #1: Navajo Raiders vs. Thunderbolt Apaches
Game #2: Birkham-Stoke Barricaders vs. Farmingdale Zeds
Game #3: Football Strategists vs. Mage Knights
Game #4: Coin Insurgents vs. Weehawken Heroes

Quarter Final #1: Navajo Raiders vs. Thunderbolt Apaches
What a truly spectacular opening game we saw in the battle for the Solo Cup! The Raiders were leading 14-7 at the end of half, and two more Raider touchdowns to just the one touchdown and a field goal from the Apaches saw the Raiders going into the Fourth Quarter with a commanding 28-17 lead. A fifth touchdown with 8:30 left on the clock left them with a seemingly unassailable 35-17 lead. But the Apaches' QB, Dan "Gator" Vessen, showed his true mettle and rallied the team around him, firing pass after completed pass. The Apaches were able to score two unanswered touchdowns by the two minute warning to reduce the Raiders lead to just 35-31. A desperate on-sides kickoff saw them recover the ball on the 50 yard line while their fans went crazy celebrating! Vessen's form held and the Raiders could do nothing to stop his pin-point passes. A successful pop pass from Vessen saw the Apaches score the winning touchdown with just 15 seconds left on the clock! Amazing! A truly nail biting opening game! Final score: Apaches 38, Raiders 35.

In an interview after the game the Raiders QB, Joel Tippen, laid the blame for the defeat firmly with his team's defence: "They didn't do anything to harass the opposition in the last quarter. For all the impact our Defense had they might as well have been on the pitch planting corn." Harsh words there, Joel!

Quarter Final #2: Birkham-Stoke Barricaders vs. Farmingdale Zeds
After such an exciting opening this game had a lot to live up to! Both teams started slowly and traded field goals. However, a sloppy pass by Zeds QB Hermann Luttmann towards the end of the First Quarter was intercepted on the Zeds 22 yard line and run back for the first touchdown of the game. This seemed to galvinise the Offenses of both teams and they traded touchdowns in the Second Quarter, with another Zeds' field goal gave the Barricaders at slender 17-13 lead at the end of the half. A change of defensive game plan saw a ferocious Barricaders Defense shut down the Zeds in the second half. They forced 4 more turnovers, and the sole Zeds' touchdown of the half, despite being a spectacular 52 yard razzle dazzle, came with only 30 seconds left on the clock. It'll look great on the replays but it was too late to influence the game! Final score: Birkham-Stokes Barricaders 30, Farmingdale Zeds 20.

After the game the victorious Barricaders QB, Dan Hodges, said: "All credit to the Defense for this win. Coach Chaplin, our Defensive Coach, completely sabotaged the Zeds game plan."

Quarter Final #3: Football Strategists vs. Mage Knights
Much was expected of the Knights, a perennial crowd favourite, but they struggled to find their bearings in this game. The Strategists, under the firm guidance of QB Thomas Shaw, were able to monopolise possession in the first half, and while they conceded a touchdown and two field goals to the Knights, their two touchdowns and two field goals made them look favourites for the second half. They were able to capitalise on their 20-13 half time lead by again dominating possession in the second half. They completely shut down the Knights' Offense, only allowing them one touchdown very late in the Fourth Quarter, but by then the Knights' quest for victory seemed doomed. A late Strategists' touchdown with only 15 second left on the clock saw them notch up a convincing win. Final score: Football Strategists 37, Mage Knights 20.

Back in the locker room Knights QB, Vlaada Chvátil nobly took the blame for the team's disappointing offensive performance: "I picked up a wound in my hand during training in the week. I thought I'd be able play through it but it just kept coming back to ruin my play."

Quarter Final #4: Coin Insurgents vs. Weehawken Heroes
It was truly embarrassing watching the Heroes Offense try to get their act together for this game. It seemed as if they had no idea who was in charge and what the game plan was, and the result was a shambolic performance. The game was dominated by the towering Insurgent Defense who allowed only conceded one field goal in the entire game. Their own Offensive, under the stable helm off QB Volko Ruhnke, really didn't have to do anything special to secure a humiliating defeat of the Heroes. Final score: Coin Insurgents 38, Weehawken Heroes 3.

Heroes QB, Robert Leonhard, was shell shocked after the game, saying: "It was impossible! Any time we thought we might be making some progress against the Insurgents' Defense they rallied and seemed to pop up everywhere we were trying to get the ball to. I'm stunned."

Semi Final #1: Birkham-Stoke Barricaders vs. Thunderbolt Apaches
The first semi-final saw a really hard fought game between the Apaches and Barricaders. Both teams were playing slow possession games during the first half and managed a single touchdown and field goal each. However, with the time running out at the end of the second half the Barricaders pulled off a truly stunning razzle dazzle play to score a 51 yard touchdown allowing them to go into the second half with a 17-10 lead. Both defenses upped their game in the second half and had conceded just a field goal apiece by late in the Fourth Quarter. However, a lazy pass from Barricaders QB Dan Hodges was intercepted on the Barricaders 32 yard line and the Apaches were able to take advantage of this to score the only touchdown in the second half. Final score: Thunderbolt Apaches 23, Birkham-Stoke Barricaders, 20.

The disappointed Barricaders QB Dan Hodges commented after the game that: "the Apaches Defense mounted a ferocious assault against us in the second half. We thought they might be fatigued after the tough first half but they managed that extremely well and came out with guns blazing."

Semi Final #2: Coin Insurgents vs. Football Strategists
The second semi-final saw another fine performance from the Insurgents Defense in their second game of the tournament. They forced 4 turnovers, and their special teams managed to block a Strategists punt. The first half was a kicker's game with the Insurgents scoring 3 field goals to the Strategists 1, giving them a 9-3 half time lead. The blocked punt, coming in the Third Quarter gave the Insurgents possession on the Strategists 20 yard line which enabled them to score their only touchdown of the game. Strategists QB, Thomas Shaw, was able to drill a button hook pass for a touchdown but even after another field goal they still remained 3 points behind. When the Insurgents took possession on the two minute warning they were content to run the ball down the pitch to force the Strategists to use their timeouts. With just 15 seconds left on the clock they were in position to convert another field goal to secure a game they never really looked like losing. Final score: Coin Insurgents 19, Football Strategists 13.

In a post game interview Strategists QB, Thomas Shaw, remarked: "We had an excellent strategy on paper but the cards seemed stacked against us. The Insurgents end zone felt like a distant plain to me for most of the game."

Final: Coin Insurgents vs. Thunderbolt Apaches
So here we are for the final! The Thunderbolt Apaches versus the Coin Insurgents. After two excellent defensive showings the Insurgents were favourites to win. And what a truly exciting game this proved to be! The Insurgents had the first opportunity to score but missed the field goal attempt. The Apaches punished them for this by scoring a touchdown on their next possession. When the Insurgents fumbled on their own 36 yard line the Apaches were able to run this in for a second touchdown. An Apache field goal only made the Insurgents task harder as they were now 17-0 down. But QB Volko Ruhnke is never one to give up and under his guidance the Insurgents Offense started to get their bearings. A touchdown and two field goals, the second coming in the dying seconds of the half after an excellent punt return took them to the Apaches 41 yard line, meant they ended half with much more respectable 13 points to the Apaches 17.

Both teams changed tactics to focus more on the running game in the second as both reasoned that possession was going to be key in this game. The Insurgents missed a second field goal attempt in the Third Quarter, although both teams managed another touchdown. The Apaches scored their fourth touchdown with only 3:45 left on the clock, giving them a 31- 27 lead and leaving the Insurgents needing to score a touchdown from what would probably be their final possession which was going to start on their own 20. A spectacular sequence of passes from QB Volko Ruhnke culminated in a screen pass for a touchdown with just 45 seconds left on the clock! The Insurgents were now leading 34-31. An Apache field goal would tie but they began possession deep in their own half. They were able to move the ball but not for any great distance. With just 15 seconds left on the clock a desperate Long Bomb resulted in the Insurgents giving away a 30 yard interference penalty. The Apaches were now on the Insurgents 32 yard line with just one second on the clock! The field goal was....good! A tie! Overtime beckoned...

The Apaches won the overtime coin toss but where unable to make any headway against the determined Insurgents Defense. The Insurgents took possession on their own 31 yard line. They now seemed one step ahead of the Apaches Defense and were doing everything right to keep the ball moving. A superb flair pass from QB Volko Ruhnke saw them into the end zone and into the history books as the first ever winners of the Solo Cup! What an exciting end to an exciting tournament. Final score: Coin Insurgents 40, Thunderbolt Apaches 34.

A beaming Volko Ruhnke, when asked after the match about the key to the Insurgents victory, said: "We had a really good play book. We have some very clever flowcharts that allow us to second guess the opponent's Defense and get the win." Very ingenious, Volko!

1979 AH version. This is a great two player but what about a 4 player? An Offensive and Defensive coordinator for each team?
