Description Edit | History

If you enjoy tabletop gaming (historical simulation, "euros," sports games, racing games, train games, any type of board or card game), you’ll find over a thousand people at the WBC who share your interests.

Most of the tournaments are open to all, regardless of level of expertise. In fact, a person with no knowledge of any of the over 140-tournament games at the WBC could still fill every day with a full slate of enjoyable games. There is always some friendly person willing to teach games.

This event is in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, now and until at least 2010. Traditionally, it is scheduled around the beginning of August/end of July for about a week.

The World Boardgaming Championships® (WBC) attract about 1200 people from around the world who participate in open gaming, competitive tournaments, and even a few social tournaments. In addition, an auction and vendors are available for purchasing new and used games and starting in 2007, there will be seminars in addition to wall-to-wall gaming. Tournament winners receive plaques and are noted on both the Web site and the following year's program guide. This convention is the cornerstone of the Boardgame Players Association (BPA).

Games offered at the yearly convention are determined based on that game's performance at the previous WBC (the Top 100 games, a.k.a. "the Century"), so only the best of the best are offered from year to year. In addition, BPA members vote to add 25 more games, so that deserving new games can enter the convention and also to allow old favorites that didn't quite make the cut to be revived.

AREA ratings for many of the WBC games
AREA is a system for player ratings for certain games. People who play those games and submit their win/loss information to the AREA administrators accumulate points towards their ultimate score.
