I have bought some printable business cards that I'll be using. The game requires 100 cards, 10 cards per A4. The cards will be in color but I'm using a design that goes easy on the ink.

I'll be using a program (free for download) that allows me to place images and print on the cards. If it's OK with you I'll send the files for the program (can be used for any paper and cut manually), if not I guess I could put something else together.

Because we play a lot of games these days I'm not sure when the cards will be complete, making the symbols will take a bit of time.

I'll be doing all the components on my PC so it's easy to get them emailed. Thanks :)

Walsfeo wrote:
I would guess that would depend on the publisher, how much we revealed, and how close it is to being completed.
As far as the show is concerned, we could talk about it in vague terms or give a standard review. On the other hand we could just be playtesters if you didn't want us to review it.

I think the best solution would be that you start out as play testers and I can talk to whoever is interested in publishing it (if anyone) whether they would like a review or not, if you want to review the games. It's a bit hard for me to get the game play tested with more then a handful of people so that would be great on its own.

That depends on whether you want the crappy hand drawn prototypes or the still in the making higher quality prototypes :)

Seriously though, if you wanna take a look and don't mind the hand drawn variants I could probably have my current prototypes sent to you next week. I need to fix up the rules a bit and print them out as well as take some photos. I don't need them myself anymore because I'm working on better ones. I rather send them away because making prototypes takes time. I would really appreciate your feedback and maybe some publicity :)

My card game is drawn on the back of my old business cards and are very easy to handle. The gameplay is as far as I know unique, I've never seen a game even closely like it. It takes 15-20 minutes to play and the basic rules are smooth and takes about 5 minutes to learn. The hardest rule seems to be remembering to draw a card every time it's your turn. There are only 5 different cards in the game. It's playable for 3-6 players, I think more will break it but I'm not sure. It usually picks up in speed after a few turns. There are also a handful of optional advanced rules to mix in but the basics allows for some tricky moves to be pulled off.

My abstract game is a bit more flimsy to play with. The board is made out of 2 120g papers glued together side by side and the tokens are folded 120g paper glued together and hand drawn in 4 colors. The game got some similarities with Hey! That's my fish and is about as easy to learn. However, it's a step up in depth and a game takes only a fraction of the time to set up. My biggest problem with "my fish" is the time it takes to build a good "board" to play on. It's for 2-4 players.

BTW, what are the reactions from publishers if I would send you the prototypes? Would it be good for me if you make a review or would they prefer nobody knew of the games?

Yesterday we had another new player attending our game session and he is interested in playing more. We went through Starfarers of Catan, A Game of Thrones and Memoir 44 on 4 players yesterday and played for 6½ hours.

Because I got a deal for teaching out board games we are getting pretty big grants now that we are playing as much as we do. If we keep the speed up throughout August we will have payed all our debts and compensations as well as bought some more games before the month is over. Not only that but we will now start buying in food so we can play many hours straight.

Ah, it feels great now that my plans are coming together :) As we get more games and more serious gamers as well as experience with the game and the rules it's easier to invite new players to try out some games.

Giles:
I don't doubt students drinking a lot all over the world, well most western countries anyway. I don't think people in Sweden study to stand out, there are tons who do, it's almost expected these days. In a way this is a problem for the economy because it shortens the time people actually work with about 4 years.

Yeah, retail is a tricky market. It's hard to get it but when you do you can sell millions, of course you have to have a game that can really appeal to the general market. Wits & Wagers did just that IIRC.

Warhammer seems to be quite popular here in Sweden, also Magic does really well. Fantasy in general is very popular over here. Sci-fi is not as big here as in US.

Have you read the tie breakers paragraph in Starcraft? It's huge! There are two ways to win the game: get 15 points or complete your special victory. If two players complete their special victories at the same time the points decide. And after that:

Most resources
Most areas
Most bases
Most workers

To bad they didn't make a bullet point list in the rules, would have been far easier to read.

Thread: Re: Games and culture

The University culture is probably very different in Sweden, I had Norweigan friends when I was at University who were doing their Masters degrees in order to 'stand out' - as they said most people had a degree of some sort in Norway. It isn't the case in Australia, and not the case in America either from what I have read. I still think that a majority of people attending University are into the style of 'party' scene as you describe it, perhaps not as much, but it is certainly very prevalent. When I was at Uni there were few to no game clubs, although lots and lots of pub-crawls and drinking clubs.

I imagine the faculties would see something of a different clientele as well - with 'geekier' subjects seeing more people with a predisposition to be gamers... :p

I don't think Monopoly would get published today if the 'culture' for it didn't exist. I recall Mike Hirtle from Hasbro commenting that a game today must sell XX million copies *for sure* before they will consider publishing it, so games have to have a 'hook'. It also surprises me how much the retail chains have an influence - sometimes even outlining the ideal box size. A game like Monopoly has some difficult rules if they are not a part of the 'culture' you are familiar with.

The comment you make about wargames is interesting - when looking at the greater hobby of gaming I wonder whether war-games are as popular in some European countries, although in a different form - as Miniatures Table Top Games - the UK and France (from what I understand) have particularly large hobbies centered around these style of games.

Although I do agree that American Gamers tend to be more 'at home' with direct conflict games - and always find it interesting that many games I know that have no rules for tie breakers have quite a few threads on the topic of 'how to decide a winner' by Americans. I find Faidutti's comments about American's needing to have a single 'winner' to be interesting - check out his game [GAMEID=2535] - there are some threads there asking about tie breakers for this game. It doesn't seem to be as much of a problem in France at least, to have multiple winners and keep everyone happy - at least according to Faidutti.

At least we are all united in our obssessive love for this hobby :D

Cheers,

Giles.

My favourite book is The Lord of the Rings - though there are already a few games out there that reflect it... ;)

I also would like to see a *good* adventure game based on Harry Potter.

Failing that, I wouldn't mind a "shoot 'em up" style game based on the movie Hot Fuzz - that would be fun.

I also think there could be some awesome game designs based off The Labyrinth or The Dark Crystal movies by the Jim Henson companies.

A very good question!!

Cheers,

Giles.

Thread: Any license

If you could get a license for any IP, what would you want to make a game of and what kind of game would you make?

I would make a game out of Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy (AKA the assassin books) because those are the best books I've ever read. I would make a strategy focusing on the war with the Outer Islands including the red ship raiders, the forged and the betrayal. It would be cool to add in Fitz (the main character) as well, kinda like what they got going in [GAMEID=9609] where the fellowship tries to destroy the ring during the war.

Hey guys, I was talking to a couple listeners about meeting at WBC, but I don't know who all might have been part of the discussion.

Unfortunately I have to spend the bulk of my time looking for work and need to pinch pennies until I find it. I will still take the time to put out podcasts, but gas is a non trivial expense these days.

It's easier to direct people over to Scott's videos though, people need a bigger interest to listen to your podcast :)

If ever I get paid for one of my game designs (or get a permanent job) I'll promise to make a donation.

BTW, my thoughts on the book will get to you one of these days. I played board games for [url=http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geekplay.php?action=plays&userid=203090&date=2008-07-31]8 hours straight yesterday, I just found another player. (Not possible with some of the classic game designers.)

The thing is - I don't follow any given game designer well enough to talk about a body of works so Scott (or someone) would need to take the lead on those.
